Dear Sterling alumni and friends,

The mission of Sterling College—developing creative and thoughtful leaders who understand a maturing Christian faith—is an ambitious task. In my inaugural address, I stated: “The students that come to Sterling are filled with tremendous potential… Our message is that God loves them and wants great things for them…We want our graduates to grasp the understanding that they have an eternal purpose to pursue and fulfill.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson identified the spirit of education that we seek to engender in students when he said, “Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire.” Education is developing a lifelong passion to learn, to understand God’s universe and his purposes. When this understanding is integrated in a life, God’s work and purpose are realized.

This mission cannot be accomplished by a single group, be it faculty, alumni, friends, or individual churches. Just as our mission is grand, so is our God. He calls and invites us to a partnership, so that the mission is accomplished together. We are so grateful for our financial partners—without them, students’ lives would not be transformed by Christ.

Our mission is grand, and it requires constant attention. To that end, we have affirmed Christ-centeredness as the foundation of our identity. We have continued to grow our enrollment, and our board of trustees has expanded with new members who are committed to the College’s mission. They, like you, share a vision: for Sterling College to be recognized as the finest Christ-centered college in the Great Plains and for Sterling to be used mightily for God’s kingdom. This provides the context for Sterling College’s Annual Report. The reasons people give to Sterling are as numerous and diverse as the donors themselves. Whether it’s one inspired moment or many culminating in the desire to give back to the College, one thing is certain: your generosity is a measure of our success.

MISSION TRIPS:Sterling sent out seven mission trips during the 2008-2009 year, including trips to India, Peru, Thailand, Ghana, China and two trips to Egypt. Nearly 10% of the student body went on these cross-cultural experiences.

DEBATE & FORENSICS:For the third time in school history, Sterling College can proudly claim one of its own as a national champion in forensics. Senior Jana Miller

captured first place and the national championship in Prose during the National Tournament. The Sterling College Debate Team regained the title of State Champions at the State Parliamentary Debate Tournament at Bethel College in North Newton, Kansas.

ATHLETICS:Sterling College Head Women’s Basketball Coach Lonnie Kruse reached the 600th win of his career during the 2008-2009 season. Under his leadership, the Lady Warriors were not only declared KCAC Conference Co-Champions but also advanced to the NAIA Sweet Sixteen.

ENROLLMENT: It was a record-breaking year for Sterling College. In the fall of 2008, a total of 654

students enrolled, the largest enrollment in the College’s 121-year history. This marked the third straight year that Sterling’s enrollment topped 600.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP: The Sterling College Business Department opened a Quiznos franchise restaurant on March 30 as a hands-on learning experience for business majors.

It is about mission - “developing creative and thoughtful leaders who understand a maturing Christian faith!” That’s the overriding reason why alumni, friends, trustees, faculty, staff, churches, and others give to and serve at Sterling College. We are grateful for the 2,635 alumni, friends, trustees, churches and church organizations, businesses, faculty and staff members, and granting agencies who gave during our fiscal year beginning July 1, 2008 and ending June 30, 2009. During this time-frame, giving to the 2008-2009 Sterling Fund reached $853,821 while total giving to Sterling College exceeded $1,690,151. Members of the Cooper Society (230) gave $1,171,336 or almost 69% of total giving. Total donations also included $371,674 coming from estates. Some also demonstrated their commitment through project giving, including the Stadium Renovation and Teachers Endowment (matched by the U.S. Department of Education) campaigns. Project giving amounted to $412,061, with $374,250 going to the Stadium Renovation and $19,000 to the Teachers Endowment (totaling $38,939 with the matching USDE funds). The Stadium Renovation has enhanced the campus significantly, while the Teachers Endowment will provide scholarships for education students in perpetuity. Memorial gifts honoring the legacy of nine loved ones, totaled $31,838. DeBoer Family Foundation of Wichita, KS gave an extraordinary gift of $249,999 to establish the new Quiznos restaurant. These funds were given with the understanding that students manage and staff the restaurant. Total private foundation gifts in fiscal year 2008-2009 totaled $430,781. Between 2004 and 2009, Sterling College was the recipient of a U.S. Department of Education Title III “Strengthening Institutions” program grant of more than $1.75 million that directly funded or contributed to improvements, including:• Integration of technological innovation into all curricula, instructional equipment and faculty/instructor expertise• Creation of a $250,000 endowment, with half of the funds raised by Sterling, for Education students• Infusion of Servant Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship principles into all College programs• Achievement of nationally recognized and accredited curricula, including curriculum revisions in nearly a dozen

departments• Professional enrichment for faculty/administration • Building of positive relationships with K-12 school systems and community colleges As a result of this USDE grant, Sterling College is better poised to grow and to meet the expanding needs of our increasingly diverse student population well into the future.

In fall 2008, Sterling College endowments were negatively affected by the economic recession just as were other colleges and university endowments. By June 30, 2009 these investments declined by 9% over June 2008. Non-liquid endowment holdings provided a 2% investment return for this period. In 2008-2009, Sterling College received income from the following sources and used this income in the following ways to accomplish our mission.

Stadium & Track Renovation CampaignInspired by the vision to revitalize the track and football complex that the College shares with Sterling High School, donors responded with a remarkable level of generosity. Gifts to the Stadium & Track Renovation Campaign generated over $1.1 million in financial support towards a total project cost of $1.5 million. Enhancements include a new track surface, the addition of new field event venues, the athletic parking lot has been paved, and many improvements of safety and function within the complex. Upgrading the facility beautifies a highly visible area, making a powerful statement for SC and the Sterling community. We gratefully acknowledge those who donated to this campaign during the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2008 and ending June 30, 2009.

Title III GrantThose listed in this category responded to a matching challenge from a Grant of the Federal Department of Education to create an endowed fund for continuous scholarships for students in Teacher Education at Sterling. A total of $25,000 was given by these alumni & friends, an amount that was matched from the Title III Grant, thus providing $50,000 to Sterling’s endowment fund for students in our Education Department.
