The Programs of Literacy Services

2 11

The Need

Literacy Services of Wisconsin was founded in 1965 when a group of concerned citizens organized the first volunteer based literacy program in the state. The Wisconsin Laubach Literacy Coordinating Committee recruited volunteer tutors and sponsoring organizations thatprovided the space, materials and training for new tutors who would conduct individualized instruction of students. Over the years, this grassroots effort grew steadily and has become the multi-faceted organization it is today.

The need for quality, no-cost, individualized literacy tutoring is more important to our city than ever before. The 2003 National Assessment of Adult Literacy reports that Milwaukee has a rate of 27% illiteracy among adult residents. This alarming level of illiteracy is related to other problems such as unemployment, poverty and crime. Literacy Services provides a solution to adults who seek education as a means to improve their circumstances in life.

Program Descriptions

Adult students at Literacy Services of Wisconsin enroll in one of three core programs:

Adult Basic Education (ABE):Improvement in reading, writing, spelling or mathematics is the goal of our ABE curriculum. Students work with tutors in a one-to-one situation tailored to the individual need of the student. The materials, pace and length of instruction are adjustable based on the student’s goals and learning profile.

High School Equivalency Preparation(GED and HSED):Adults prepare to take the examinations which will lead to a GED or HSED diploma. Areas of study include reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, science, health and civics. Studentsreceive individualized coaching and pre-test until they are confident in their ability to successfully pass the examinations at a GED or HSED testing site.

English as a Second Language (ESL):Non-native English speakers with a range of ability enroll in this program to receive individualized instruction. The goal is to achieve fluency and competence in English, initially in speaking, then in writing.

Additional Programs at the Laubach Center

In this past fiscal year, instruction was also provided in these additional areas:

Reading Skills Program:Adult students with a known or suspected learning disability such as dyslexia receive tutoring in this program. Methods are multi-sensory, increasing receptivity, interpretation and retention of reading material. Adults who have struggled and had minimal success in traditional educational settings are achieving reading gains in this program.

Family Literacy Program:Children of adult students participate in this program. While parents are working with a tutor, the children receive nurturing care and educational support. Emphasis is placed on building and strengthening reading skills, and preparing children for academic achievement.

Computer Learning Center:Adult students utilize the Computer Learning Center to supplement their instruction and study. Students are encouraged to develop computer skills, and to practice and reinforce their core curriculum program with additional study. Educational software matches the ABE, GED and ESL curriculum.

Dear Friends of Literacy Services,

We are pleased to report to you on the activities and outcomes of the 2005-2006 fiscal year. This year marked Literacy Services’ 40th year of teaching adults to read, speak and writein English, and prepare for a high school or GED diploma. It has been a joy to celebratethis birthday year and the achievements of so many who have gained literacy skills in our programs since 1965.

Within this annual report you will find information about our programs, our financial status, and our events. We are pleased to include photos of events commemorating the foundingof Literacy Services 40 years ago. Most importantly, you will learn in this report about the courageous adults who seek literacy education in our programs. Their motivation, persistence and accomplishments provide all the incentive any of us need to continue inthis vital work.

This 40th anniversary year has been a time for celebrating, and a time for planning. Welook back with pride and pleasure at the thousands who have achieved literacy skills andimproved their lives at Literacy Services. We look forward with hope and determinationto fulfill the mission of literacy for all.

On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, staff and students of Literacy Services, wethank you wholeheartedly for your past and future support.

Sincerely,

Leif NesheimPresident
