exchangeNational Student Exchange provides accessible, affordable collegiate study away opportunities within a premier network of colleges and universities throughout United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

As college students search for rich domestic experiences to add to their education portfolio, collegiate study away becomes the solution. Many students seek travel for a semester of cultural immersion throughout other parts of the country; NSE enhances this process.

NSE fits into university initiatives for global engagement by promoting the diversity of the North America. Our member campuses report domestic study away as a high impact practice supporting student satisfaction and persistence. Membership options and tuition reciprocity provide opportunities for campuses to expand their institutional resources and develop flexible academic partnerships.

The NSE consortium is funded through institutional membership and student application fees. It is facilitated by an administrative office and governed by a Council elected from within the membership. The values that guide us are found in our mission. National Student Exchange inspires academic enrichment, personal exploration, and student development by facilitating collegiate study away.

MISSIONNational Student Exchange inspires academic enrichment, personal exploration, and student development by facilitating accessible collegiate study away among member colleges and universities throughout the United States, Canada, and U.S Territories.

VISIONNational Student Exchange strives to be the leading resource and premier provider for intercollegiate study away exchanges in the United States, Canada, and U.S. Territories.

VALUESWe value diversity, open-mindedness, and cross-cultural engagement fostering learning, understanding, respect, and a sense of community among all people. We believe that adding a collegiate study away experience enhances education and enriches student growth.

National Student Exchange hosted its Annual Placement Conference March 5-9, 2019 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The conference was attended by 164 coordinators and assistant coordinators representing 147 NSE colleges and universities. Two prospective campuses were represented at the conference.

The annual conference provides the primary professional development opportunity for the NSE organization in areas of student exchange practice, student engagement, and study away initiatives. Thirty-six coordinators, assistant coordinators, and prospective members attended the NSE Professional Institute (NPI) for those new to coordinator responsibilities. The session offered opportunities for instruction, coordinator interaction. and best practice sharing. Council members and other veteran coordinators facilitated round-table discussions and exchange case studies.

A conference welcome and plenary were presented by President Debra Sanborn and Vice President David Holliday focused on shifts in enrollment and challenges facing higher education in the U.S. and Canada.

Priority placements resulted in 1280 students (85%) accepted to their first-choice college or university for all or part of the 2019-2020 academic year and 97% of all applicants receiving a placement.

NSE held their conference banquet on Thursday evening. Guest speaker John Fitzmorris, instructor at University of New Orleans, shared a historical perspective of the Crescent City. Additional UNO dignitaries in attendance included John Nicklow, president; Elaine Brooks, academic director of interdisciplinary studies; Tina Chang, associate vice president for professional and continuing education; and Ray Wang, dean of University Libraries. A second line brass band led conference attendees on a parade of the French Quarter to celebrate the evening.

Six concurrent professional practice sessions were presented by NSE coordinators on Friday morning. The annual business meeting addressed marketing campaigns, web site changes, regional discussion reports, and budget forecasts. Coordinator years of service and encouragement team members were recognized. Dan Harper, University of New Orleans was honored with the Terry Arnold Encouragement Team Award for his pre-conference communications and conference hosting. James Luyirika-Sewagudde, Jr., California State University Chico, was honored as retiring after 43 years of service to NSE. An NSE application fee scholarship in his name was established at Cal State Chico.

Following the business meeting, coordinators visited the University of New Orleans. On Saturday, participants traveled to Baton Rouge and toured Louisiana State University and Southern University to conclude the conference.

NSE Application Fee AwardThe NSE Application Fee Award was created in honor of the NSE 50th Anniversary in 2018. Funds were generated for the award with the introduction of a Silent Auction during the NSE Placement Conference. The application fee award is designed to support exchange-bound students in meeting the cost of the NSE application fee.

The award provides financial support equivalent to the NSE student application fee (currently $150.00). It is intended to enhance the possibility of exchange for students who are unable to meet the expense of the application fee when applying for exchange. NSE encourages institutions to waive their portion of the application fee for students receiving this award.

The criteria for eligibility to receive the NSE Application Fee Award:• Students must demonstrate Pell Grant eligible financial need as determined by filing the

FAFSA and submitting verification from their campus financial aid office.• Students must be designated as a potential applicant for National Student Exchange.• Students must be eligible for exchange as designated by the home coordinator.• Students must possess the potential to succeed and benefit from an NSE exchange.

This award is available to NSE applicants seeking priority exchange at the March NSE Placement Conference. Students may study any major offered at a participating NSE institution. Ten application fee awards were offered for 2019-2020.

Learning OutcomesThe NSE Assessment committee developed student learning outcomes to enable future assessment projects. As a result of participating in the National Student Exchange, students will:

1. Demonstrate confidence in their independence, goal accomplishment, and sense of self.2. Express intercultural understanding regarding the historical and cultural composition of the

home and host campus.3. Differentiate contrasting viewpoints of the home and host campus culture.4. Organize, construct, and deliver concepts and ideas that effectively communicate the value of

student exchange.5. Establish relationships of respect and empathy with faculty, staff, students, and

community of the home and host campus.6. Evaluate and integrate experience and skills gained from the

student exchange experience for application in academic and professional practice.

Governance and AdministrationThe National Student Exchange governing board (Council) is composed of the president, vice president, and five NSE Coordinators representing each of the NSE geographic regions. Council members are elected for a three-year term. The Council met in October 2018 in Chicago, Illinois and during the conference in March 2019 in New Orleans, with additional business conducted during monthly conference calls.

Throughout the year, Council reviewed the status of campus programs, Conference planning, web priorities, and long-range budget projections.
