PRESIDENTS REPORT

Presidents Report
As my term of office on this board concludes at this AGM, I have the honour of presenting
my first and last President’s report.
This year has been a challenging one for Bowls Tasmania, with the absence of our CEO on
maternity leave for the past six months. It has certainly shown us how much we rely on
Rebecca Van Asch’s knowledge and know-how when she is at work. I am very grateful that
she has continued to make herself available to answer questions when needed. Thank you
Bec.
Before Bec took her maternity leave she had further successes on the green, following her
Commonwealth Games success of the previous season. Bec won the Australian Open
Women’s Singles title and the Australian Indoor Women’s title, before arguably her greatest
success of the year, the birth of the beautiful Alexis May (Lexi). Many congratulations Bec.
Only a few short weeks after Lexi’s birth Bec went on to win a bronze medal at the World
Cup, a remarkable effort. Bec, you have made Tasmania very proud and we are lucky to
have you with us at Bowls Tasmania. We eagerly await your return to work.
There were other successes on the green during the year. Our Juniors won their test match
against Victoria in July and Jorja Maughan and Lauren Banks came home with a gold medal
from the Junior National Championships. Lee Schraner won the men’s Australian Champion
of Champions competition, which was held very successfully at Kingborough Bowls Club,
and Lauren Banks was runner-up in the women’s competition. Lee also won bronze at the
World Champion of Champions event, and he and Lyn Triffit won silver medals in the
Australian Championships Singles. Rick Ormerod and Alan Ryman won gold at the Multi-
Disability Nationals event.
After a somewhat disappointing performance against Victoria in the French Holbrook Test
series in December, though the men’s side put up a valiant effort narrowly losing the final
deciding test, both Open sides bounced back with emphatic victories against ACT in January.
The men won 5-0 and the women 4-1. At the Sides Championships in Ettalong NSW in April,
the men finished fifth on the ladder, while the women finished fourth, a good result for them
which included a victory against Victoria. Three juniors Josh Walker-Davis, who won the
men’s player of the series medal, Lauren Banks and Jorja Maughan, were included in the
Open sides, which bodes well for the future.
There is now 18 months before the next Sides Championships, which will be part of The
Nationals, a new concept from Bowls Australia whereby the Junior Nationals, Open Sides,
Senior Sides, Australian Championships and Champion of Champions event, and possibly
the Multi-Disability Nationals, will all be included in a two-week competition. This will present
challenges for Bowls Tasmania, especially coming right at the start of our season, but work
is already underway to re-vamp our High Performance Calendar to give our sides the best
possible chance of success.

Bowls Tasmania produced its new Strategic Plan this year and looks forward to working to
achieve the KPIs therein. It is very much based on the Bowls Australia Strategic Plan, in
order to achieve a whole of sport approach.
Another attempt was made this year to achieve one set of Conditions of Play to cover
pennant for the whole state. However after discussion between the three regions it was
decided that it would be pointless to disrupt a system that works perfectly well for 18 weeks
of the year, in order to satisfy the demands of the 6% of players who make it through to the
State Pennant finals. Open Gender pennant on Saturday has now been embraced by all
three regions.
We are very grateful to our partners, especially the contribution and support of the Tasmanian
Government and Community Sport and Recreation Tasmania. We also acknowledge and
thank WIN TV, Henselite, Aceit, BCIB, ANZ and City Club.
The new website is up and running and the new database has just been activated. Clubs
need to be reminded to ensure that all information about their members is correct, particularly
contact details. I should like to thank David Genford for his help in posting information on the
website for us during the year and for writing some wonderful articles.
I should like to thank the board for their support this year, particularly Bob Clifton our
Treasurer, who has been the source of much sage advice, as well as continuing to do such
a great job with the finances. Sadly Nick Lee resigned from the board, due to medical
reasons, but we welcomed back Les Harrison, to fill the vacancy created when he previously
resigned. Les will resume his portfolio of Officials and Umpires, as well as taking the Bowlers
with a Disability and Bowlers with a Bowling Arm under his wing.
I also thank Warren Groves, who has helped enormously with the organisation of events,
especially during Rebecca’s absence, and Kim Saunders, who has helped out in the office
and been a great support for our administrative assistant Nadene Graham. Nadene has
been on a very steep learning curve, having no previous knowledge of bowls, but has been
willing to learn and I thank you for your efforts and your cheerful patience Nadene.
I wish my successor every good fortune. There are challenges ahead with the new set-up
of the Nationals and there are KPIs to achieve, as set out in our Strategic Plan, but I am sure
that Rebecca’s return to work will help ease your path.
Thank you
Sue Ross
President
TREASURERS REPORT
Page 8
Treasurers Report
A Surplus of $2,911 was achieved for the year. The result was slightly under our
projected surplus but after achieving our Financial Plan.
Revenue was consistent with last year but fell short of our budgeted amount in
Capitation Fees $8,000 and Sponsorship $6,000 with these shortfalls being
offset by savings in other areas.
The continued support from Sport & Recreation is noted and much appreciated
and I thank Rebecca & Sue for their efforts in once again securing this grant.
This result has been achieved with a lot of effort from CEO Rebecca and Nadene
who has filled in while Rebecca is on maternity leave and thanks go to our
sponsors for their support.
The Board has considered our program for the coming year and factored in rising
costs, particularly with representative teams, and other financial risks and
recommends that the current Capitation Fees be increased for the 2019 /20 year
by $2 for both Adults & Juniors to $52 and $37 respectively.
In closing and on behalf of the Board, I would like to pay tribute to Sue Ross for
her service on the Board and in particular for her efforts as President over the
last 12 months in which she not only performed the usual duties associated with
the role but has been very involved in assisting Nadene run the office during
Rebecca's leave.
