Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly Vision Statement is “To create a community where elders are not forgotten, an extended family that recognizes the needs of the human spirit: to serve others,

to be loved, to enjoy life.” Through the efforts of the Little Brothers team, the staff, volunteers and donors, we have made significant progress in achieving our vision and goals. We continue to grow our many programs that serve our elderly friends in Houghton, Keweenaw, Ontonagon, Baraga and most recently, Marquette counties. Implementing the newly developed strategic plan will provide additional direction for the Little Brothers team to continue to provide and expand our many programs. Thank you to everyone who has supported our programs and I ask that you continue your support of Little Brothers.

expanding ouR loveWhen I first went to work for Little Brothers back in 1982, in Minneapolis,

I loved the organization and everything about it! I loved that it was grass roots, volunteers and staff providing kindness to elderly people and making lifelong friendship in return.

Today I still love the organization for these same reasons! Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly addresses the needs of the human spirit. It’s a visit to a forever friend, taking someone to the store, swinging by Helen’s after work with an ice cream sundae just because you know she likes them! It’s making sure Martha has an arm to hold on to as she goes to the doctors and a shoulder to lean on afterwards. It’s stacking someone’s firewood and admiring their independence and savoring that homemade cookie they baked for you. It’s celebrating someone’s birthday with them, only to find out they had never had their own birthday party before.

More than 1100 volunteers reach out to our elderly friends and they do it with kindness and respect. The compassion of our volunteers and staff has made our community stronger and safer for our elderly friends.

Little Brothers is looking to the future with excitement as we are expanding into our 5th county – Marquette. We have a vision; to create a community where elders are not forgotten. Be assured we will do this well through caring volunteers and staff. Our motto says it all, where service to the elderly begins by being a friend.

Who speaks for that elderly person alone in the chair

watching life pass her by?

We do.

ouR signatuRe pRogRamTo ease isolation and loneliness among the elderly in a five-county area, we provide friendship to 200 elderly friends who identify themselves as lonely and who are in want and need of in-home visits at least twice a month. We consider them our “forever friends.” Our commitment is long-term: once accepted into our program, we make a commitment to be their friend for the remainder of their life. Visits may also include shopping, going out to lunch, or attending a community event together. We also invite our Forever Friends to attend numerous social activities we host throughout the year.

Thank you all for my wonderful birthday party

and for the wonderful meals.

home and heaRthOur Firewood Program serves elders who can no longer process their own firewood or cannot afford to purchase it for winter home heating. We deliver 140 pickup truckloads of cut and split firewood annually to elders who still use firewood as their main source of home-heating. Over 450 volunteers cut, split, and deliver the firewood throughout the year.

Firewood Program

bRidging geneRationsOur Forever Friends are provided opportunities to socialize with their peers, connect with their community, and learn about new topics. Activities vary with the season and include movie matinees, picnics, historical tours, and theatre. We celebrate birthdays, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Halloween. Intergenerational programs pair international students and 6th grade students with seniors to discuss current events, culture, and participate in oral history interviews.

Social Activities Program

Festivity with FRiendsAnnually, we serve over 3,600 holiday meals to both our elderly friends and volunteers.

This program gives elders age 60 and older, a memorable Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter when they would otherwise be alone. A traditional holiday meal is prepared from scratch at twelve meal sites in the five-county area. Hot meals are delivered to those unable to attend.

5staying saFe with assistanceCommonly needed equipment such as walkers, canes, wheelchairs, shower seats and other assistive devices are available to any area senior to borrow, free of charge, for as long as necessary from Little Brothers.

Medical Transport ProgrampRomoting healthy livingThe Medical Transportation Program provides an average of 1,800 one-way rides annually for our elderly friends to their medical appointments. We provide “door-through-door” transportation from knowledgeable and compassionate drivers who offer reassurance, friendship and assistance. This service enables our elderly friends to live independently in their own homes. We provide transportation to Doctors and Specialists locally or at the regional medical center which is 100 miles away.

nouRishmentOver 100 low-income seniors are supplied with non-perishable food once a month. Each bag of food is personalized and includes easy-to-prepare food. If an elder is unable to pick up their food, it will be delivered to their home by a volunteer. At Christmas, we deliver a special gift of non-perishable food with holiday treats.

As I attend my final week of undergraduate lectures and prepare for Spring Commencement, I find myself reflecting on the sum of my experiences over the last five years at Michigan Tech. While I am incredibly excited to graduate, I can’t help but express my gratitude for all of the people that have guided me, challenged me, and helped me grow as a person during my time here.

One of the most influential people during my journey through undergrad has been my Forever Friend, Janice Peterson. I’ve been visiting with Janice for several years now; we’ve enjoyed lots of lively conversations, lunch dates at Applebee’s, and an incredible friendship. I feel very lucky to have gotten to know Janice during my time at Michigan Tech; she provides the perspective that only nine decades of life can bring. When stresses about classes leave me feeling worried, I often think of the many times that she has looked me right in the eyes—and with the most sincere confidence—reminds me, “it’s all in God’s hands.”

It was no mistake that Janice and I were matched together as Forever Friends; not only do we share in faith but also in an unrelenting desire to live life to the fullest. Sometimes I help Janice cope with not being able to do every single thing she wants to do by gently reminding her that the energy, independence, and mobility she has at the age of 90 are truly an inspiration to us all.

This past fall, we celebrated Janice’s 90th birthday with a special dinner outing with a group of her friends, a homemade chocolate cherry cake (her favorite flavor), and some friendly Scrabble competition (I am no match for her skills!). It was so amazing to celebrate that milestone together.

Getting to know Janice and volunteering at other Little Brothers events has opened my eyes to notice the broader Houghton community beyond those studying and teaching at Michigan Tech. I’ve grown to enjoy serving our elderly community so much that now, as I approach the start of medical school, I am strongly considering a career in geriatric medicine. I’ve seen firsthand the ways that our elderly population has specific needs, and there is a great demand for young physicians to compassionately respond to those needs and advocate for their care especially in rural areas.

I am so thankful for all that Little Brothers does for our community, and words cannot express the gratitude I feel to have been a small part of that mission. I look forward to bringing the same dedication and enthusiasm to serving the elderly wherever I move in the future as well as through my career in medicine.
