Mission and Vision:

The Pops Symphony’s mission is threefold:

1) To educate, enrich, and entertain audiences of all ages by providing accessible, affordable, high-quality symphonic music.

2) To encourage youth involvement in music through participation, donations, and scholarships.

3) To provide an opportunity for local musicians to participate, through rehearsals and performances, in a challenging, inspiring, and dynamic musical environment.

The Symphony’s vision is to expand the influence of Pops music throughout Northern Arizona and the State.

Dear Friends of the Prescott Pops Symphony,

As we come to the conclusion of our 25th season, the Prescott Pops has many milestones to celebrate. We put on five incredible performances, two of which were completely sold out. Season ticket holders exponentially increased. Scholarships and school grants strengthened our outreach to student musicians, schools, and youth in the quad-city area. In October, the Board of Directors made the decision to hire the Symphony’s first administrative staff member. The organization embarked upon a Strategic Partnership with the Prescott Chamber Orchestra in an effort to explore shared fundraising and marketing strategies.

Looking to the future, there are many projects in the works that will bring our organization to a new level. The Board of Directors and Staff are diligently working to raise pay for our talented and valued musicians. A new handbook and memorandums of understanding will be distributed for the next season. Grantwriting, corporate sponsorships, and major gift programs have been re-vamped and have amazing potential to increase the overall budget of the organization.

The following pages of this report review the concert season from an artistic, organizational, and financial perspective. We hope this will help to foster new transparency and accessibility for our stakeholders, Board of Directors, donors, audiences, and musicians.

There is more work to be done, but we are proud of what we have built over the past 25 years. We are Prescott’s symphony orchestra, and our dedication to providing high-quality musical experiences to the Northern Arizona region makes us an essential element of our city. We look forward to working with you in the coming season. Thank you for your dedication to the Prescott Pops Symphony.

Our HistoryLocal musicians created the Prescott Pops Symphony in 1992 with a mission to provide opportunities for the performance of light-hearted orchestral music during the summer months. It was first incorporated as a non-profit organization in May of 1996 as the “Prescott Summer Pops Symphony” led by Conductor Emeritus Paul Manz.

Over the years, attendance and ticket sales for Pops concerts tripled. In response to this popular demand, the Pops dropped “Summer” from its name and became the “Prescott Pops Symphony” in 2007. Adding to the summer performances, the Symphony grew to support five major productions throughout the year, including two annual concerts featuring a full chorus and renowned soloists.

During its tenure, the Pops has performed close to 100 concerts for appreciative Yavapai County audiences. The Symphony performers range from 50 to 80 local instrumentalists and 40 to 60 vocalists at various concerts, plus local guest soloists and conductors. Membership always includes from 10-15% youth participants from area intermediate and high schools, engaging with the Symphony’s mission to support young musicians in the area.

In Prescott, the Pops has partnered with other performing and support groups such as the Yavapai Symphony Association, the Yavapai Symphony Guild, the Yavapai College Master Chorale, and the Prescott Chamber Orchestra.

The Pops continues to provide quality performances at low-cost ticket prices for the community. Support for the Symphony, through monetary and in-kind donations, provides ample opportunity for participation by the area’s talented musicians.

Notes

These numbers are based on an estimated average of the season’s five concerts. We typically sell out concerts with full Symphony and Chorus (July and December). Concerts in September and February are generally less well-attended.

The City of Prescott donates the YCPAC Facility Rental line item once per season.

The YCPAC donates the entire venue rental for Music Memory concerts.

A grant from The Acker Trust Fund provided funding to pay student musician stipends this year.

Prescott Unified School District donates the use of Prescott High School’s band room, instruments, and equipment for rehearsals in exchange for program advertising and the continuation of the Symphony’s school grants and scholarship programs. This is listed as the “rehearsal venue” line item in the concert budget.

Music MemoryMusic Memory is an annual cultural enrichment music program for elementary school children designed to enhance understanding and appreciation of classical music. It is targeted primarily for grades 3-5, and is open to all schools in Yavapai County. There is no charge to the schools for this program as both the performance hall and orchestra donate their resources.

Each year, the pieces to be performed are selected by the Prescott Pops Symphony music director in collaboration with the Music Education & Enrichment Board Member. Student booklets are provided to each student for classroom study with their music teacher or home educator. This student booklet includes information concerning the layout of the orchestra, an introduction to each instrument and instrument family, grade-specific information on each composition, composer histories, musical themes, concert manners, listening guides, a concert-oriented word list worksheet, and a word search. Because of these booklets and the hard work of the local instructors, students come well prepared to enjoy not only the music, but the entire performance experience.

This year, the Prescott Pops welcomed 2,206 students to the Yavapai College Performing Arts Center from Prescott Unified School District, Humbolt Unified School District, Yavapai County Schools, local private schools, and three home school groups.

School Grants and Scholarships

One of the Prescott Pops Symphony’s pillars of operation is a dedication to student and youth musicians in the community. Specific donations can be directed to support these initiatives, and the Symphony is granting $11,000 ($2,000 eligibility for each school) to instrumental programs in Yavapai County schools this academic year. As funding for the music and arts in our community becomes sparse, the Prescott Pops strives to make music rentals, instrument repairs, and needed equipment accessible to local students and music educators.

The Symphony also supports student musicians by allowing talented high school students to join the orchestra. With help from a grant by the City of Prescott’s Acker Trust, the Pops supports an endowment for music scholarships valued between $500 and $1500 for graduating seniors who perform with Pops.

The Prescott Pops also has a strong relationship with the Prescott Unified School District (PUSD). The founder of the Symphony, Conductor Emeritus Paul Manz, was a local music educator for over 20 years. Every music educator and school administrator in the District is incredibly supportive of the Prescott Pops. Because of the Symphony’s dedication to student musicians through school grants and scholarships, the Pops is able to rehearse in PUSD spaces, utilize Prescott High School’s percussion instruments and equipment, and promote concerts in the classroom at no charge to the organization.
