On behalf of Co-Chairs Jerry Casburn and Roxanne Withers we are pleased to present the Chairperson’s report for the Board of Northern Volunteering SA 2017/18.

This year we farewelled our Executive Officer, Peter Heyworth after 10 years of exceptional service navigating Northern Volunteering through difficult times while identifying and embracing many opportunities for the organisation to thrive. In particular, his hard work in the establishment of Northern Volunteering Education & Training Services (NVETS). The Board sincerely thanks Peter for his passion and contribution to Northern Volunteering.

With the EO resignation and the current challenging economic environment the Board explored what the future might look like for Northern Volunteering and made some strategic decisions about the staffing structure moving forward. This has resulted in the appointment of Donatella Amos to the Executive Officer position and Ned Hanic as the NVETS Manager and we are confident that they will successfully lead the organisation on its next stage of its journey.

Our partnerships remain a strong focus both locally with Volunteering SA & NT; Southern Volunteering and our Volunteer Resource Centre counterparts across Australia. These relationships have strengthened over the past 12 months with the sector united through the release of The Value of Volunteering Support Services (VSS) report commissioned by Volunteering Australia which Northern Volunteering was a contributor. The report provided a socio-economic analysis and evaluation of the value of Commonwealth funded Volunteering Support Services nationwide. Not surprisingly, the findings demonstrated the significant worth with VSS enabling nearly 12.3 million volunteer hours in 2017. At an individual service level saving Volunteer Involving Organisations up to $10,000/year. This information provides valuable evidence to articulate our significant value in the wider community and supporting government priorities.

We thank board members Derek Williamson, Kelly Stewart and Maria Ross for their ongoing commitment to the effective governance of the organisation.

We want to acknowledge that all of this work wouldn’t happen without the Northern Volunteering staff and volunteers and we are sincerely grateful for their passion and dedication.

Lastly, I, Jerry Casburn am resigning from my position as Co-Chair and have enjoyed being a key part of its growth in the past 5 years , over recent times my commitment to other volunteer positions, mainly within Rotary, have taken much time. I have enjoyed the years I have spent on the Board and in particular with the calibre of people doing an extraordinary job with minimal resources. We have weathered many storms over that time. The new management will I am sure be successful in carrying the organisation forward. I wish everyone success in their endeavours and will miss the camaraderie.

Welcome to my first Annual report as Executive Officer of Northern Volunteering! I feel the role is not entirely new to me as I have been with Northern Volunteering for over 7 years as Training and Development Manager – however, have large shoes to fill!! Peter Heyworth was with the organisation for 10 years and brought with him a worth of knowledge and skills to not only the region but the sector as a whole.Thankfully we haven’t lost contact completely as he will remain in the region based in Gawler as a Lead Pastor with Hope Central. We wish him all the very best with his new role and look forward to continuing our working relationship with him. Peter will also continue to work as part of our team in his continuing role as trainer with our RTO NVETS.

Late last year we also farewelled our Treasurer Phil Bunyon from the Board. Phil had been an integral part of the Board for several terms and made a significant contribution to the running of NVSA and the establishment of NVETS.

Ned, Peter and I were fortunate to be able to attend the 2018 National Conference in Sydney in June which provided a great forum for not-for profit leaders, managers of volunteers, researchers and policy contributors to advance and strengthen the volunteering sector through knowledge sharing and discussion. The theme of the conference was Ignite, Invigorate, Inspire and this certainly took place not only during the conference itself but across all the network in-between as well.

I had the honour of being nominated for City of Salisbury’s Living Legends Award – presented to a group or individuals to encourage to help build the community to be a better place to live with pride and Northern Volunteering was runner up in the Salisbury Business Awards for Community Services. More importantly than winning is the opportunity to hear about all the great work being accomplished in our community by our community.

Donatella Amos with her mother and Debra Kulwikowski

One such event we had the pleasure of participating in was the annual BBQ as part of the Salisbury Pageant. This would not have been possible without the donation from the Salisbury Business Association. The team from Northern Volunteering provided the free BBQ to all the participants and the event included everything you could imagine from a Christmas parade – 86 groups participated, 1,800+ participants in total with 50+ event volunteers, 20 market stalls, 45 parade vehicles, and much more! We look forward to more opportunities to partner with our members and the community with catering and food handling training opportunities utilising this great resource we have.

As I sign off on my first report, I’d like to acknowledge all the dedicated, supportive staff who have made my role one to be truly proud of. The day to day operations of NVSA and NVETS just wouldn’t be possible without all of their skills and knowledge as well as their personal support of me and my vision for the future. The past year of funding cuts and looking for ways to diversify our income has been a difficult time and will continue to be so over the coming year. You are only as strong as your team and with the team that I have to work beside me, I’m feel I’m stronger than I’ve ever been.

With this in mind, I commit this Annual Report, hopefully my first of many, to you for review.

The Community Visitor Scheme auspiced by Northern Volunteering received a funding extension to December 2018. In May 2018 Northern Volunteering joined a consortium with Enfield Baptist and Uniting in Care Salisbury to apply for funding commencing January 2019 to June 2021 with Enfield Baptist taking the lead role and to date are still awaiting outcome. During this financial period 35 volunteers have visited 73 residents in 12 Aged Care Homes in the Northern area. A number of volunteers visit more than one resident in several homes. A considerable number of volunteers have left the program in the last 12 months due to various reasons, mostly health issues, or family commitments. Recruiting volunteers, particularly male volunteers, is an ongoing issues, normally males are not interested in this type of volunteering. The recruitment of volunteers has been a common issue with other Community Visitor Scheme Co-ordinators.Residents benefit greatly from the volunteers visiting as they look forward to the visit and the aged care staff know that the resident is actively involved for a period of time on a regular basis. The volunteers also benefit as some of them may suffer from depression, loneliness or other issues which gives them something to focus on. A number of the Aged Care Home Co-ordinators really appreciate and value the volunteer visiting.A Christmas lunch was held in December for the volunteers, this is a great opportunity for new volunteers to meet and discuss issues with experienced volunteers and also to swap stories.A quarterly newsletter is sent out to the volunteers and to the co-ordinators of the Aged Care Homes informing them of current health, social, aged care information, training and other issues of interest for the volunteers. Finally I would like to thank the Board members, staff and volunteers who are actively supporting our work with the Community Visitor Scheme here at Northern Volunteering.

Northern Volunteering focusses on face to face interviewing and while we have a web presence and encourage individuals to go onto the website to search for volunteer roles, our focus remains individual and in person. With a strong weekly representation in Salisbury, Enfield, Port Adelaide, Modbury, Elizabeth and Gawler; we have been able to work with a significant number of individuals. The decline in face to face referrals continues whilst the diversity of the individuals we see increases. There has also been an increase in people presenting with complex issues whether it be mental health, disability, cultural or other and the team’s feedback continues to be what a difference we are making to these people who need extra support when applying for volunteer positions.

Our non accredited training continues to be much sought after with over 40 organisations receiving on site specific training for their volunteers and staff. Some of the organisations we have supported include: City of Playford, City of Salisbury, Twelve 25, City of Prospect, City of Charles Sturt, City of Unley, Town of Gawler, Adelaide Hills, Community Housing Council SA, Holiday Explorer, Lyell McEwin Volunteer Association, NDVS, UCare, BWL, Hills Volunteering, Southern Volunteering SA, Barossa Council, Community Access and Services, North East Community Centre, Multiple Solutions, Elizabeth South Community Centre, Light Regional Council, RAOB, Status, University of Adelaide, Positive Ageing Hills, Volunteer West (Victoria), Lighthouse Disability, BENE, Northern Carers Network, Mid Murray Support Services, Salisbury RSL, Purple Orange, Vietnamese Support Service, Southern Cross Aged Care.

Our partnership in 2017-2018 with Volunteer West (Volunteer Resource Centre based in the Western suburbs of Melbourne) saw us provide Masterclasses for over 25 participants – a third of which contin-ued on to the Accredited CCH44015 Certificate IV Coordination of Volunteer Programs. These students brought with them world of diversity and knowledge – from environment programs, to aged care, to work-ing with their local government. This Masterclass model of introducing Volunteer Management to a team of coordinators/leaders was also adopted by the University of Adelaide where the team of coordinators were able to come together once a month to network and work collectively for the improvement of the overall program. Through our connections with our interstate students we were asked to facilitate volunteer training for an innovative and exciting Greeters program established by the State Library Victoria. This year long program introduced our centre to over 100 volunteers and gave us an opportunity to cross communicate and learn from each other about differences and similarities around volunteering in each state. NVSA’s consultancy crossed over the border where we worked with the City of Greater Bendigo (Victoria) to harmonise their volunteer administrative policies and processes. The year-long project included information gathering and consolidation, policy identification and development, finalisation of processes and polices, induction manuals and the training of staff into the new system. The variety of programs within the shire meant that there was always something interesting to learn about from arts and festivals, to information centres and council specific programs. To date the implementation has been successful and we look forward to continuing our relationship with the City.

We also continue to support all the many other organisations who attend our on-site training sessions and appreciate their ongoing commitment to our flexible and interactive workshops. We welcomed sessional trainers this year in Pauleen Fennel and Beth Baillie who were able to introduce a new range of training opportunities for us (including our First Aid training with photo of Beth in action)

We once again welcomed our guest trainer Rob Jackson to our region (and to our shores) as Rob is a UK based professional and one of the leading authorities on volunteering in the world. The session was facilitated in partnership with Australasian Association of Managers of Volunteers (AAMoV).

In May 2018 we welcomed to our team our NVETS Manager Nedzac Hanic who came to us with years of experience in working in VET, with RTOs and middle and high school sector. We also welcomed over 80 participants have been trained across our qualifications and short courses. NVETS has successfully met all reporting requirements to date with renewal in progress as current registration expires in January 2019. Industry reference group continues to ensure the material we are delivering is aligned to what the sector is wanting which ensures the students completing their courses have the skills and knowledge required to do their effectively. Marketing and advertising has been strengthened with an online presence resulting in our first interstate online Volunteer Management student. This is a growth area for the future and an opportunity we look forward to expanding. We will also look to increase the frequency of our short courses after an ongoing interest from the community continue; to look at further opportunities for increasing our scope to include relevant courses; opportunities for suitable grants and funding and more exposure through more effective use of social media. NVETS was also invited to speak at the Curriculum of giving – student volunteer workshop held on May 31st, 2018 which outlined the benefits of volunteering for students and provided insight into how to run a successful student volunteer program in the school. NVETS showcased how students completed the dual course in CHC22015 Certificate II in Community Services and CHC24105 Certificate II in Active Volunteering and gained experience and confidence and developed pathway into a broad range of industry areas. Students enrolled included from Tyndale Christian College, Mt Barker High School, Adelaide Vocational College and Birdwood High School.
