CONVENOR’S REPORT 2016/2017

Page three Page four

It is a great pleasure for me to be able to report another successful year. We have managed to entertain and inform our supporters, but more importantly we have helped record numbers of students through our awards schemes. We have supported the academic institutions of the Campus and have helped to increase public awareness of what is happening at the Crichton. In addition, we have facilitated a truly innovative development by bringing a small part of a world famous collection to Dumfries.

So let me take you through the past year and point out some highlights. In May 2016 the Trustees were delighted to welcome more than a hundred of our supporters to the Founder’s Day lunch. This occasion allows the Foundation to thank the large numbers of people who work for us on committees, are members of our Friends scheme or are representatives of the academic and other institutions on Campus. After lunch there followed the Henry Duncan Memorial, which took the form of a tribute to the life of Henry Duncan presented, in period dress, by Dave Dewar. It was a very different affair from the usual lecture.

The Crichton Conversations continue to be very popular and are the means by which we increase awareness of the Crichton Quarter amongst the general public. The 2016/2017 season was excellent and is reported on elsewhere in this document. Two presentations stand out and deserve special mention. Jeffrey Hoffman, former astronaut, told an enthusiastic audience how he and colleagues repaired the Hubble Space Telescope while in orbit five hundred miles above Earth. Riveting stuff. Later in the year a record number were enthralled by His Grace, the Duke of Buccleuch and land architect and cosmic speculator Charles Jencks telling the story of their creation the Crawick Multiverse.

Sir David Landale left a substantial bequest to the Foundation to provide an annual prize to the University student who has contributed most to the Campus. I am delighted to report that the inaugural winner has been selected by our Awards Committee and the prize will be presented by Lady Landale later in the year.

When it was suggested that Glasgow University’s world famous Hunterian collection should have a presence in Dumfries I felt that it was an opportunity not to be missed. Very generous donations from the Powell family in memory of the late Dr John Powell, Consultant Adolescent Psychiatrist, and other anonymous donors allowed the “Hunterian in the South,” a small part of the main museum, to be brought to the Campus.

Our two main fundraisers continue to be popular and are also reported on later. Both the Women of Dumfries and Galloway Lunch and the St Andrew’s Dinner are very well supported and raise significant sums, every penny of which the Foundation distributes to the students and institutions of the Campus. These functions always run very smoothly but only do so because of the enormous amount of work done by the relevant Committees. I am, as ever, hugely grateful to Vicky Jardine-Paterson and Evelyn Hastings, who chair the Committees and to the enthusiastic members whose hard graft make them events the successes they continue to be.

Elsewhere on the Campus the Crichton Development Company has been subsumed into the Crichton Trust with a new Chairman and Board, many of whom have strong local interests. The Foundation and the Trust have developed a good working relationship. We are independent of each other but are comfortable that we share common interests. I see the future of the Crichton as being bright and am heartened by the Trust’s vision of it which, whilst being ambitious is also realistic.

Everything that we do in the Foundation is facilitated by people who give very generously of their time and to all of them I am truly grateful. The Board and its Executive work hard to scrutinise our activities to ensure that all that we do is conducted properly, ethically and appropriately. To them and our Audit Committee, now chaired by Tom Aitken, I am most appreciative. Without the help of Kirsty Barbour and Pam Stokes in the office we could not function. I am again very happy to record the Foundation’s thanks to them for the wonderful job that they do. To Sue Howes who looks after our accounts we thank you also.

The Crichton Foundation has done great good since its inception. We plan to continue to do so for many years to come.

The Crichton Conversations programme continues to play an important part in maintaining the links between the Crichton and the wider community. These events attract significant audiences with 765 people attending the series, including a growing number of students. Sponsorship helps to keep the costs of attendance to a minimum whilst making sure that overall income from the series covers expenditure. As ever the Conversations are the product of Dame Barbara’s impressively large number of contacts, we continue to be in great debt to her for making the series the great success it is.

The Foundation is very grateful to the sponsors for all of our events: Bonhams, Colledge and Shields, the Crichton Trust, Farries, Kirk and McVean, the Open University in Scotland, Savings Banks Museum, Scotland’s Rural College, the University of Glasgow, the University of the West of Scotland and many other anonymous donors.

FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES & EVENTS 2016/2017

This event is hosted by the Foundation as a means of thanking the many people and businesses that support our charitable purposes through subscription to our Friends scheme, sponsorship, advertising and many other ways. The event took place on Wednesday 25th May 2016 at Easterbrook Hall. This year, instead of a formal Henry Duncan Memorial Lecture, Dave Dewar gave a fascinating account of his life and works. Reverend Duncan was a Dumfriesshire minister who started the world’s first savings bank. He worked in a commercial bank before taking up the ministry in Ruthwell Parish at the turn of the 19th Century. His “penny bank” gave parishioners access to savings and interest for the first time. The model was soon adopted around the globe. The assembled guests were then treated to a visit by Reverend Duncan himself, played splendidly by the actor Colin Little. The play The Banker Who Cared, written and produced by Dave Dewar, enjoyed its premiere at Ruthwell Church on 26th May followed by a performance at the Catstrand on the 27th. Many of the Foundation’s guests attended the performances. The Founder’s Day Lunch helps the Foundation to maintain the links between the Crichton and the wider community. The Foundation is most grateful to the Savings Banks Museum, owned and run by TSB, for their sponsorship of this event.

The 15th annual Women of Dumfries and Galloway Lunch took place on Friday 10th March 2017. Chairman Vicky Jardine-Paterson welcomed over three hundred and eighty guests on the day. Following the drinks reception and two course lunch our guest speakers were welcomed to the stage. Singer, broadcaster, actress and producer Fiona Kennedy Clark regaled the audience with her wonderful stories, humorous anecdotes and beautiful singing, accompanied by Jenn Butterworth. Kirsty Wark, a patron of the Crichton Foundation gave a captivating talk covering everything from her love of the region, the value of female friendship and culminating in her rendition of the tale of Kate O’Shanter. The Foundation is very grateful to both speakers for their fascinating and entertaining talks. Our thanks go to Vicky and the Lunch Committee, the many businesses that took advertising within the programme and those who gave donations. Very grateful thanks must, of course, go to Bonham’s who once again provided generous support as our sponsor. Special thanks also to Colledge and Shields Family Law Practice for kindly donating a gift of chocolates for every guest. The proceeds of the Foundation’s fundraising activities throughout the year are used to support a range of awards made to individual students as well as contributing to the success of various projects carried out by Campus partners.

Carson Reaching Potential Award The Carson Reaching Potential Awards are funded through donations that were generously made to the Foundation for this purpose. The awards are available to students who have completed at least one full year of study at Dumfries and Galloway College and who are enrolled on an undergraduate course at the Crichton University Campus. As well as demonstrating a need for additional funding it is important that applicants describe their aspirations and what they hope to achieve by furthering their education at the Crichton Campus. This year the Foundation received twenty-two applications and issued eighteen Awards totalling £5,350.

Crichton Foundation Academic Excellence AwardThese awards are open to any undergraduate or postgraduate student studying at one of the Universities on the Crichton Campus. They are made to recognise academic excellence and achievements. Applicants must provide evidence that they are consistently achieving very good or excellent grades. Four awards totalling £1,100 were made from five applications received in 2016/2017.

Crichton Foundation Hardship Grant for StudentsOpen to all undergraduate or postgraduate students who can provide evidence of hardship and are able to demonstrate the need for financial help. These grants are available to help students who experience financial hardship as a result of unforeseen or ongoing difficult financial circumstances and who are studying at the Crichton Campus. These grants are assessed by Student Services and monitored by the Awards & Grants Committee. Eighteen hardship grants were awarded to a total value of £5,520.

General Education GrantsGrants may be available to undergraduate or postgraduate students at the Crichton Campus whose case for funding does not meet the criteria for any of the other awards funded by the Foundation. Awards are made from the general education fund to students who present a case that the Committee agree is worthy of support. This year fourteen applications were received and nine awards totalling £2,800 were issued.

Dumfries and Galloway Council - Da Vinci DecathlonThe Dumfries and Galloway da Vinci Decathlon Challenge is organised by the Curriculum and School Improvement Team at Dumfries and Galloway Council. It is both a bi-annual schools based competition and a way of working with schools in the region to develop skills for learning, life and work. The da Vinci Decathlon Challenge concept was developed by Knox Grammar, Sydney, Australia originally a regional and national venture in their home country. Knox Grammar has since broadened the scope of the Decathlon. The winning team from Dalbeattie High School will go on to compete in Milan. The Foundation provided £500 sponsorship towards the Dumfries Challenge.

Dumfries and Galloway Council - Business WeekThe theme for Business Week 2016 was “Going for Growth.” A week-long series of events and workshops took place across the region. The Foundation took part in some of these activities and provided funding of £800 towards the celebration lunch, which was the climax of the week’s events. The guest speaker at the lunch was Hamish McRae, a Patron of the Foundation. The lunch coincided with the 20th anniversary of the Crichton Campus.

Easterbrook Hall - Let’s Get SportyLet’s Get Sporty hosted a Super Sunday Family Day at Easterbrook, Crichton Campus on Sunday 5th of July 2016. AWARDS AND GRANTS 2016/2017

University of Glasgow - The Whithorn Way: 21st Century Pilgrammage Dr Valentina Bold presented her paper on The Whithorn Way at a conference in Prague with help from the Foundation to the value of £350. The Whithorn Way is a new pilgrimage route in development in South West Scotland. It has provenance, going back to the middle ages, some continuities, through the twentieth century and certainly resonances for modern pilgrims. It has potential, too, to contribute to the economic future of an under-resourced, under-appreciated, area.

University of Glasgow - Eco-cultural Tourism ConferenceDr Guillaume Tiberghien has over 10 years of experience in teaching Bachelor and Master Degree Programmes in Tourism Management and Marketing in an international context. His main teaching and research activities focus on the relationships between Cultural Heritage Tourism, Sustainable Tourism Development and Tourism Marketing. Guillaume also conducted and participated in several consulting projects in the fields of Tourism Marketing and Management in Central Asia and New Zealand. The Foundation supported him to present his paper at a conference in Canterbury with an award of £200.

University of Glasgow - Hunterian in the SouthIn October 2016 a permanent showcase of the University of Glasgow’s renowned Hunterian Collections was launched at the Crichton Campus. The Foundation was able to provide funding of £31,250 to install the displays. This was possible through very generous donations made by the family of the late Dr John Powell, who was a former psychiatric consultant at the Crichton Royal Hospital, as well as anonymous donations. The displays, which are open to the public, initially focus on the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and features models commissioned for an earlier exhibition. Photo: University of Glasgow

Mrs Morag Shearer, a great supporter of Foundation events and former member of the Gala Committee, passed away peacefully after illness.

In October 2016 we were greatly saddened by the sudden death of Mrs Gisele Hammond who was a member of the Women of Dumfries and Galloway Lunch Committee.

Rev Logan Kirk who was a regular attendee at Foundation events died peacefully in March 2017.

In April 2017 we learned of the passing of Lady Mary Herries of Terregles who, as well as being a Friend and Member, donated regularly to the Foundation.

In June 2017 we were sad to hear of the death of another Friend of the Foundation, Mrs Margaret Barbour.

Each of them will be greatly missed by all who knew them.
