•Wecelebratedour45thyearasaculturalnon-profitorganizationwithourfundraisinggala“HatsOfftoMudflat.”Manythankstoalloftheartistswhodonatedceramicworkforoursuccessfulauction,toourmanysponsors,andtoeveryonewhoattended!

• EnrollmentinMudflatclasses,workshops,andoutreachprogramscontinuedtobestrongerthaneverwithrecordnumbersofparticipantsforall3semesters.

•WeunveiledanewwebsiteforMudflatin2016toupdateourlookandprovidemoreup-to-the-minuteinformationtousers.

•Wewelcomed3newstudioartiststoMudflat:MaryBlack,EmilyLoberandMartinMcDermott.Weworkedwith3ceramictechnicalinterns:LillyHartman,MayaMoen,andJuneSass.

• EightMudflatartistswereselectedtoexhibitworkinthe2016“StateofClay”show,heldevery2

yearsatLexingtonArtsandCrafts.HollyCurcioreceivedanawardfor“BestSculpture.”

•Wehosted4exhibitions,includingournew“MudflatChallenge,”featuringworkcreatedbystudentsandstudioartiststhataddressesadifferentthemeeachsemester,andourannualAIRexhibit,thisyearshowcasingMikeRoche’ssculpturalwork.

•Weagainpartneredwithlocalnon-profitstosupportourcommunity.Wehostedthe3rdannualEmptyBowlsbenefitforFoodForFree,andparticipatedintwoEastSomervilleMainStreetsevents:CarnavalandtheFoodieCrawl.Mudflatplayedhosttotheband“TheLegendaryVuduCrewe”onourbalconyatPorchFest,sponsoredbytheSomervilleArtsCouncil.

•Mudflatuppedourgamewithalargersocialmediapresence,with“MugshotMonday”and“CommunityWednesday”featuresonFacebookandtechnicalvideosonYouTube.

•WecommissionedJoshBeckmantofabricateabenchframeforourlobby,incorporatingarescuedsectionofterrazzofloorfromtheentryofourtheatrebuildingasthebenchseat.

•MudflatcontractedwithEversourcetoreplaceallofourfluorescentbulbsandballastswithmoreefficientLEDbulbsthroughitsSmallBusinessProgram.

OurvisionforMudflat’sgrowthincludesofferingabreadthanddepthofhighqualityprogramsthatdevelopthecreativeandtechnicalskillsofpottersandsculptorsofallagesandabilities.Wecontinuetoseekoutopportunitiesforexpandedprogrammingandcommunityoutreach,andtoofferstudioarrangementsthatencourageinteractionandcollaborationsamongprofessionalceramicartists.AllofthesesupportMudflat’smissiontopromoteexcellenceandparticipationintheceramicarts.WeareespeciallyproudofthecommunityofpeoplethatmakeupMudflat—theiractivitiesandcontributionscreateavibrantandwelcomingenvironmentforthecreativepursuitofclay.

MISSION

MudflathasofferedthemetropolitanBostoncommunityauniqueopportunityforclayworkandplaysince1971.Ourmissionistopromoteandexpandappreciationofandparticipationintheceramicartsthroughclasses,workshops,outreachprogrammingandeventsforstudentsofallages,abilities,andsocioeconomicbackgrounds.Mudflatalsoprovidesamixofstudiorentals,whichattractandsupport38accomplishedclayartists.Together,theschoolandstudioformadynamiccommunitycenteredonasinglemediumandasharedcreativeprocess.

VISION

Foundedmorethan45yearsago,Mudflatwillgrowintothefutureby:

• Offeringabreadthanddepthofhighqualityprogramsthatimprovethetechnicalandcreativeskillsofpottersofallagesandabilitiesandpromoteexcellenceintheceramicarts.

MudflatStudioisanon-profitorganizationinSomerville,Massachusetts,offeringclasses,workshops,outreachprogramming,andeventsfocusingontheceramicarts.Wefosteranenvironmentwherestudentsandartistscanbecreative,receivearichandvariededucationalexperience,andparticipateinalargeartisticcommunity.Ourgoalsaretoshareourpassionforworkingwithclayandtoencourageourstudentstodiscoverwaystoexpressthemselveswiththisresponsivematerial,whilecreatingfunctional,sculptural,anddecorativework.Ourstrengthsarethatwefocusonasinglemedium,weofferlearningopportunitiestoallages,andourstudentsworkincloseproximitytoprofessionalstudioartists.Mudflatiscommittedtomaintaininganorganizationalcultureandasetofcorevaluesinallinteractionsamongitsstudents,faculty,studioartists,board,staff,funders,andneighbors.Theseinteractionsarewelcoming,collaborative,collegial,supportive,andalsofun!

ABRIEFHISTORYOFEARLYCHARLESTOWNCLAY

Duringthe18thCentury,therewasmuchearthenwarebeingproducedintheareanorthoftheCharlesRiver.Millenniaoferosionfromthehighlandssouthoftheriverhadwashedclaytowardthenorth,depositingitintheareawhichnowincludesCambridge,Charlestown,andSomerville.ThesedepositsofgoodclaycombinedwitheaseofwatertransportalongboththeMysticandCharlesRiversresultedinCharlestown,MassachusettsbecomingoneofthemajorpotteryproducingareasintheEnglishColonies.Functional,leadglazedearthenwarewasproduced,someofitdecoratedwithsliptrailing.ThiswarewasshippedfromdocksalongtheMysticandCharlesRiverstomanyofthecolonies.Beingearthenware,ithadlimitationsandsotherewasstillahugeamountofstonewarebeingimportedintothecolonies,andtherewasconsiderablecompetitiontoachievestonewareproductionhere.

Around1740,IsaacParkerandhiswifeGraceHallParkerdecidedtodevelopstonewareattheirCharlestownpottery.Isaacpetitionedthecolony’sGeneralCourtforexclusiverightstostoneware

production,whichhewasgranted.HetravelledasfarsouthasPennsylvaniatolearnthesecretofmakingstoneware,andhiredJamesDuchefromPhiladelphiatoteachhim.WecanassumethatGracewasathomerunningthepotterywhilehewasengagedinthisjourney.SuccessdidnotcomeeasyandIsaacdiedin1742.Gracecontinuedwiththeprojectanddidsucceedinproducingstonewarehere,thoughshewasneverabletoachievelargescaleproduction.ThethrivingceramicindustryintheareabetweentheCharlesandMysticRiverscametoanabrupthaltduringtheRevolutionaryWar.Thepotterieswereburntdownandthepottersfledduringthe“BattleofBunkerHill.”

AtthattimethetownofCharlestowncomprisedwhatwenowknowasCharlestown,aswellasSomerville,Melrose,Malden,Medford;alonglistofcurrentlyindependentmunicipalities.TheMishawumpeninsulaseparatestheMysticandCharlesRivers,connectedbyaneckatwhatisnowSullivanSquare.ThecenterofCharlestownwasonthepeninsula,atwhatisnowCitySquare.In1629anEnglishsurveyor

namedThomasGravesledascoutingpartyacrossthenecktoprepareasiteforthe“GreatMigration”ofPuritansfromEngland.YoucanfindthedetailofthisifyoulookupthehistoryofSomervilleonWikipedia.Broadwaywaslaidoutin1639toconnectthecenteroftowntoMenotomy(Arlington.)BroadwaywastheroutePaulReveretookonhisfamousride,whichisre-enactedeachyear,ridingpastourfrontdoor!

OnNovember22,1841,atProspectHillschoolhouse,apetitionwasdrawnuprequestingthattheareabeseparatedfromCharlestown,andthenewtownofSomervillewasincorporatedin1842,andbecameacityin1872.Thisseparationcamelate,longafterceramicproductionintheareaofCharlestown,alongtheMysticRiverhadpeaked.Mudflat,despiteitsaddressnowbeingSomerville,sharesalocationwithaproudtraditionofceramicproductionandespeciallythewomanwhowasthefirsttoproducestonewareinthenortherncolonies

STUDIO LIFE

Mudflatoffersanexceptionalrangeofcoursesatalllevels,includingwheel-throwing,handbuilding,sculptureandtechnicaltopics,during3semesterseachyear,aswellasamonth-longintensiveAugustsession.Introductorycoursesareavailableeverysemester,alongwithavarietyofspecialclassesandworkshopstaughtbyresidentandvisitingfacultyandguestartists.Ourexperiencedfacultyhasabroadrangeofpracticalexperienceaswellasformaltrainingandeducationfromceramicartsprogramsatmajoruniversities.

In2016,ourcoreeducationprogramoffered28adultclasses,8children'sclasses,and27-35workshopsduringeach14-weeksemester.Classescoveredallaspectsofceramics,includingbeginningthroughadvancedlevelsofwheel-throwingandhandbuildingaswellassurfacedecoration,skillbuilding,andtechnicalstudies.Asacomplementtothecoreclasses,seminarclasses,privatelessons,and

independentstudyoptionsaswellasKidsSummerClayprogramsandanadultsummersemesterwerealsoavailable.

Inadditiontoclasstime,ourstudentshavefreeaccesstoourfacilityduringopenlabtimeswhichamounttomorethan60hoursperweek.Suchextensiveaccessisnottypicallyincludedatotherpotteryschoolsandisonereasonwhymorethan60%ofourstudentsreturneachsemester.

Workshopsexposestudentstoabroadrangeofartists,styles,andtechniques.Theserangefromone-dayintroductorywheelsessionsand“datenight”workshopstoweekend-longseminarswithnationallyknownceramicartists.

Ourstudentscomefrom38communitieswithintheGreaterBostonarea.Whilethemajorityofourstudentsareadultsages24to60,allagesarerepresented,fromchildrenasyoungas4yearsthroughretirees.

His introduction to clay in Japanover25yearsagolaidthefoundationforhiscraftandart.Hiseducationalbackgroundindesign,hisstudiesofJapaneseteaceremony,andhisloveofJapanesefoodalladdtohisfunctionalceramics—potterythatcanbeusedeverydayandcherishedasatreasure.Sculpturally,Stevecreatesincenseburners inspired by 15th century Japanese lions,withahintofmonsterandgargoyle.

Steve has been an active part of thewood-firingcommunityinNewEnglandforover14yearsandateacherofclayforalmost20.Steveteacheswithhumor and a thorough knowledge of his craft —challenging students while making them laugh.Steve'sworkcanbeviewedatbostonpottery.com.

AnimportantgoalforMudflatistokeepourtuitionaffordable.Weprovidefinancialsupporttoourstudentsthroughfourscholarshipfunds,whicharesupportedbygenerouscontributionsfromindividualsandbyrevenuesfromourOpenStudiopotteryraffles.OnehundredpercentofcontributionstoanyofourscholarshipfundsprovidedirectfinancialsupporttostudentsenrolledinMudflatclassesandworkshops.

JOHN McCOOEY SCHOLARSHIP FUNDPartialscholarshipsforadultclassesareavailableeachsemestertoadultstudentsneedingfinancialassistancethroughtheJohnMcCooeyFund,establishedin1998inmemoryofthislong-timeMudflatstudent.

ELEE KOPLOW SCHOLARSHIP FUNDIn2004Mudflatestablishedascholarshipfundtobenefitchildrenandtheirfamilies.TheEleeKoplowScholarshipFund,inmemoryofthislong-timeMudflatartistandteacher,providessupportforchildren,teen,andparent&childclasses.

ELLEN SCHORR SCHOLARSHIP FUNDWithinitialdonationsfromherfamilyandfriends, anewscholarshipfundwasestablishedin 2014inmemoryofMudflatfounder EllenSchorr.Scholarshipswillbe awardedtoadultstudentswhoare seriouslypursuingeducationinthe ceramicarts.

JUDITH FUCHEL-MAHLER SCHOLARSHIP FUNDOurnewestscholarshipfundwasestablished in2016byfamilymemberstohonorJudithFuchel-Mahler.Scholarshipswillbeawardedtoadultstudentswhoarestudyinghandbuildingandsculptureintheceramicarts.

“EXCELLENCE IN CERAMICS” AWARDMudflatwaspleasedtopresentthesecondannual“ExcellenceinCeramics”certificateand$500cashawardtograduatingSomervilleHighSchoolstudentBelalSohel,inapublicceremonyinMay2016.

Thirty-eightceramicartistsworkinprivateorsemi-privatestudiosatMudflat,producingawidevarietyoffunctionalandsculpturalwork.Somestudioartistsareformerstudents,othersaregraduatesofuniversitydegreeprogramsspecializinginceramicarts.Onethirdofthemarefull-timeceramicartistswhoexhibitandselltheirworklocallyandnationally.Manyhavebeenawardedfellowshipsandresidenciesatrenownedcraftcenters–includingfellowshipawardsfromtheSomervilleArtsCouncilandtheMassachusettsCulturalCouncil.Theinteractionsbetweenourartistsandourstudentsareanimportantassetandtheyoffersourcesofartisticandtechnicalinformation,inspirationandcommunity.

Mudflat’sstudioartistprogramoffersarangeofstudiospacesatavarietyofprices.Wehave2typesofartistcategories:ResidentArtistsandAssociateArtists.

ResidentArtistsareprofessionalclayartistswhohavethetechnicalskillandexperiencetofiretheirownworkinthestudiokilns.StudiosforResidentArtistsareprivateindividualspacesorsharedstudioswith1otherartist,orwith2otherartists.Monthlyrentis$245-$372perartist.

AssociateArtistsareseriousclaystudentslookingformoreaccess,privacy,andshelfspace.Thereare2largegroupstudiosofapproximately300squarefeet,eachsharedbysixartists.Thesestudiosareequippedwithashelvingunitforeachartistplusacentralsharedworktableandsharedpotterywheelineachstudioroom.AssociateArtists’workisfiredbyMudflattechnicians.Monthlyrentis$239perartist.

AftergrowingupinTucson,Arizona,EmilyattendedtheUniversityofArizonaandreceivedaBFAinSculpturein2001.SheservedastintattheNativeAmericanEducationProgramthroughAmeriCorpsandhasmadetheteachingofarttochildrenpartofherlifeformanyyearssince.AftersubmittingherceramicworkfromasuccessfulsoloshowinScottsdale,Arizona,EmilywasacceptedtoanMFAprogramattheUniversityofMassachusetts,Dartmouth.Herthesisconsistedoflargeunfired,paperslipinstallations.Immediatelyaftergraduation,EmilymovedtoNewYorkCityasaResearchAssistantatTheWillemdeKooningFoundation.In2011,EmilymovedbacktoArizonawhereshecontinuedmakingherartandledarteducationprograms. ChancebroughtEmilybacktoNewEnglandin2015andfromherfirstvisittoMudflat,sheknewshewantedtobeapartofthisrare,thrivingceramicscommunity.Everythingfromtheeducationalprogrammingtoherconnectionwiththestudioartists,cementedherdesiretojoinandcontribute.Emilysays,"WhileIhavehadachancetoexperiencecreatinginmanystudioenvironments,Mudflat,asaspaceandcommunity,rivalsanystudioI'veknown.Itisanimpressivelywell-oiled,efficientlyrunstudio.Ilovebeingpartofamotivatedclaycommunity,withsomanydifferentfacetsincludingtheseparateMudflatGallery,thewellknowncommunityoutreachprogramsandclassesforallartistlevels.FindingmynewhomeinSomervillehaschallengedmetofurthermypracticeandbecomeapartofagreatartcommunity."

OpenStudioeventsarealsofundraisingopportunitiesforMudflat.Manyoftheartistsdonateone-of-a-kindpotsandchampagnecupstosupporttheMudflatBuildingFund.Thisyear’sbuildingfundpotsfrombothsalesraisedatotalof$9,117!ArtistsalsodonatedtheirpotteryfortworafflesbenefittingMudflat'sScholarshipFunds,yielding$5,311total.

This350-square-footspaceisinaglassarcadeinthebusyPorterSquareshoppingcenter,andisadjacenttoanotherlocalcraftco-op,SignoftheDove.In2016,47MudflatartistswererepresentedatMudflatGallery,withannualsalesofover$85,000.

Beginningwintersemester2016,weorganizedthe"MudflatChallenge,"anopportunityformembersofourcommunitytocometogetheraroundathemetocreateartworkinclay.During3semesters,students,studioartists,faculty,andstaffcreatedpiecesthataddressedaparticulartheme:"Attachment"(winter2016),“Illusion/Allusion”(spring2016)and“Play”(fall2016).

Eachsemester,about50piecesweresubmitted;artistswereaskedtoincludeatwo-to-threesentencedescriptionofhowtheirworkrelatedtothetheme.Bothbeginningstudentsaswellasprofessionalceramicartistsparticipated.Theirworkswerehandbuiltandwheelthrown,functionalandsculptural.Theartists'descriptionshavebeenhumorous,poignantandpersonal;manyemphasizedtheriskstheytooktomakeandpresentmeaningfulwork.Mudflatisproudtohavecreatedasafeandwelcomingspaceformakerstopresenttheirartisticexpressions.

2016/17AIRPROFILE: MARTIN MCDERMOTT

Martin McDermott recently received his MFA inCeramicsfromRhodeIslandSchoolofDesign.HealsohasanMAinTeachingfromColoradoCollegeandaBAinVisualArtandArtHistoryfromEmoryUniversity. Martin taught high school art for 6years,designingandteachingcoursesinceramics,sculpture, photography, and introductory art. HisworkwasexhibitedinTheStateofClay2016andintheRISDGraduateCeramicsBiennial.

“My artistic practice is rooted in the creation ofabstractsculpturalformsinspiredbyobjectsfoundinnature.Iinvestigatetheborderswherecontrastingformallanguagesconverge:geometricandsensual,rawandrefined,emotionalandanalytical.Ilooktocanyons, caves, and cliffs in the rocky landscapeoftheAmericanWest,whereIgrewup,assourcematerialformuchofmywork.Mycurrentinterestsinclude thehistoryof landuse,development,andpreservation.

"My objective is to create dynamic forms thatfacilitate dialogue between the viewer and theobject. I am interested in defining and containinga certain experience of landscape in which themarks,forms,andtexturesoftheclayspeakofthemakerandofthecreationprocess.Ultimately,Iamexploring and illustrating the edges of interactionbetweenhumansandtheirenvironments.”
