OverviewThe Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation was established in 1956 by a group of industry leaders who were dedicated towards expanding a small local program into something that would have a nationwide scope and be able to impact students and schools across the entire country for the benefit of the entire industry. Started as the National Scholarship Trust Fund, it began with an endowment of only a few tens of thousands of dollars and the ability to grant a handful (or less) of scholarships. A few printers and a few key suppliers were the first ones to fund the Foundation and gave it the base on which to grow.

Throughout its sixty-year history, it found support from a myriad of associations, manufacturers, individuals and operating companies to move its mission forward. During that time, the fund has grown to over $8 million under management. And over 7,000 students have received scholarships from the organization. In 1999 the name was changed to The Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation (PGSF) in order to more closely identify what we do and to help move the organization into the 21st century with a renewed purpose.

PGSF is a not-for-profit, private, industry directed organization that dispenses technical school and undergraduate college scholarship assistance to talented men and women interested in careers in graphic communications. The mission of PGSF is to promote career interest and strengthen the industry by providing support and encouraging young people to enter the field.

Individuals, companies and associations provide both annual and endowed funds to PGSF, which administers the scholarship and fellowship programs for the industry. The purpose of the Foundation is to connect interested students, past and present recipients, donors, educators and industry professionals with PGSF. In addition, it serves to promote interest in the graphic communications industry and encourage young people to consider making it their career choice.

Quick Facts• In the most recent year, over 800 applications were received and 220

scholarships were awarded.• Total awarded scholarship funds were in excess of $410,000.• Students who received scholarships attend 83 schools across the United States.• The average scholarship awarded was over $2000.• High school seniors and students who attend technical school, two year, under

graduate and graduate college programs are all eligible to apply for scholarshipawards.

Dear Friends-These are exciting times for PGSF! Not only are we celebrating our sixty-year anniversary, we are also marking a strong resurgence of activity in our organization. In this, our diamond year, we are looking forward to continuing the great progress that was started in 2015 with our improved marketing, public relations and social media campaigns. Our board is working hard to support these efforts to make us more effective and build toward the future.

In 2015 we completely updated and reprinted all of the literature that we use to promote our scholarships and careers in the industry. This includes the very important Career Guide and a totally new Career Poster. And, in addition to being reprinted, the Directory of Schools is now available on-line for the first time. Did I mention that our website has been completely revised and modernized as well? I encourage you to visit it at www.pgsf.org if you haven’t already done so.

We are committed to three main goals as we move forward: Continuing to provide scholarships to as many students as possible; Increasing awareness of the vibrancy and relevance of our industry to schools, students and their parents; and attracting young people into the field. Going hand in hand with this is supporting the institutions across the country that offer graphics programs as they are continually challenged for their existence. And finally, we are focused on expanding our donor base in order to meet the challenges of these objectives.

If you and/or your organization can be a part of supporting the future of the graphic arts industry, I urge you to contact us. Your involvement is critical. Thank you for your consideration and support.

Dear Friends-After a two-year decline in contributions we had a signifi cant increase in donations in 2015. Our invested funds now stand at more than $8 million and we have had a positive return for several years in a row. Our investments are well managed and are made with a goal to protect the principal while achieving a return that can be used for the awarding of scholarships each year. Our long term goal is to reach the $10 million mark for our total endowment.

Currently the Foundation has 122 fully funded endowed scholarships in its portfolio. Of those, 22 are at the $100,000 Gutenberg level. The minimum for a fully funded endowed scholarship is $25,000. For the past few years we have been able to average an annual level of $400,000 in scholarship grants each year.

PGSF is fortunate that Printing Industries of America provides operational support for the organization. As a result, the Foundation is able to keep its operating costs at a relatively low level, allowing it to award more scholarships and to grow investments. This relationship is expected to continue.

Communication with students and with the industry is an important function of the Foundation and we have increased our efforts to be more effective in this endeavor. The feedback that we have received from students, donors and schools has been positive. As we move forward with our mission to attract and support qualifi ed employees for the graphics industry, we need your support. Please consider backing this important effort.

Michael Makin, PGSF President

StudentsHigh school seniors and students who attend technical school, two year, under graduate and graduate college programs are all eligible to apply for scholarship awards. The open enrollment application period begins on November 1 and closes on April 1 of the following year. Applications are evaluated in May and applicants are notified during June and July of the results. Scholarship checks are distributed in August and are sent directly to the school on behalf of the student.

Each recipient is eligible to renew their scholarship for the remainder of their undergraduate study, providing they maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and continue in the field of graphic communications. All recipients are required to keep their donor informed concerning grades, employment, activities, etc. Transcripts will be provided to PGSF.

The PGSF board has approved $430,000 for awards in the 2015-16 academic year. In the current year, approximately 200 students attending 83 schools are receiving financial assistance from the Foundation. A list of recipients is available on the PGSF website.

DonorsThe Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation is dedicated to helping individuals, companies and organizations support scholarships to educate future workers in the graphic arts industry. Without the support of forward thinking industry leaders, we would not be able to achieve this important goal. There are several ways that this can be achieved.

Memorial or honorary gifts- A donation to PGSF is a thoughtful way to express your sympathy for the loss of a loved one or to honor someone special in your life or in the industry.

Estate and planned giving- Explore your options and the many ways that estate gifts to a charitable organization, like PGSF, can reduce your tax liability and retain more assets for your loved ones.

Corporate and foundation giving- PGSF welcomes the opportunity to work with organizations to identify area of mutual interest that can benefit the future of our industry.

Existing endowments- Contribute additional funds to one of the 122 established endowed funds for a person, organization, or local area that already exists. Refer to our website, or the center spread, for the complete listing.

Donate now- Donate online or by mail through a one time or an ongoing contribution. Go to our website at www.pgsf.org or the center spread for the complete listing or contact us for a donation form. For your convenience, contributions can be made by check or credit card as a one-time donation or they can be set up to recur on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis.

PGSF is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Your contribution is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

“I really appreciate and value the opportunities that the Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation has given me. I believe the power of education is a responsibility, a call to act and to be a good example of leadership. I want to express my gratitude and appreciation for your generosity. Thank you.”

-Abel Marquez, Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo.

“I cannot express the gratitude that I feel as I look back over my time at Georgia Southern University. Without your support none of it would have been possible. Thank you again for your generosity. I have come away with so many new skills and ambitions, and it is because of your generous patronage that I am equipped with the tools I need to succeed in life.”

-Anneliese McClain, four-time PGSF scholarship recipient and graduate of Georgia Southern University

“As I visited student interns at their workplaces this summer it became increasingly clear that business and industry clearly recognizes the need to support young people joining the workforce. Contrary to popular belief, jobs are available for young people who want to work hard and make a difference in their industries. Many of our student interns this summer were offered full-time positions upon graduation.”

-Dr. Mark Snyder, Millersville University
