As I write this letter to accompany the annual update of The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit’s programs and services, I can’t help but feel the disconnect between the grace we are called to extend to those we help each and every day and the divisive rhetoric that is pervading our national conversation. No matter where each of us stands on any number of social issues, the relentless finger pointing and dismissiveness chips away at the compassion and consideration that are vital to realizing our full potential – as individuals and as a community. As we collectively work to swing society’s pendulum back toward greater acceptance and civility, The Salvation Army remains steadfast in our mission to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. This past year. . . We did that through providing more than 2.7 million meals and more than 652,000 nights of shelter between all of our assistance programs combined. We did that by traveling a total of 47,450 miles with our Bed & Bread trucks to deliver food and encouragement to those who flocked daily to our 51 stops along Detroit streets. We did that by strengthening our Pathway of Hope Initiative and Harbor Light substance abuse program that, though they don’t serve the masses, deliver massive potential for those seeking true change. We did that by welcoming hundreds of volunteers to ring bells, make sandwiches, mentor children and much more… in the process helping them foster within themselves the kind of giving heart it takes to soften society. Last April, The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit officially dedicated

the new Detroit Conner Creek Corps Community Center.

Dozens of Salvation Army officers, church and community members came together for the ceremony, featuring music from The Salvation Army Band and a worship dance by children of the Conner Creek Corps congregation. The official dedication message was given by Lieutenant Colonel Ralph Bukiewicz, Territorial Secretary for Personnel for The Salvation Army Central Territory. Formerly known as The Salvation Army Detroit Harding Corps Community Center, Conner Creek currently provides food and utility assistance, afterschool programming and youth activities, as well as other critical social services and programs. The shift from the Harding Corps location to a larger, more modern facility will allow for growth of Conner Creek programs and community outreach. Expansion plans call for the construction of a gymnasium and classrooms to

enhance the services available to the neighborhoods on Detroit’s east side. The Corps is currently developing a feasibility study to ensure that all of its services align with the needs of the community, as well as a capital campaign to raise the funds for construction and programs. “For nearly 130 years, The Salvation Army has been established and rooted on Detroit’s east side serving those in need,” said Captain Javier Moreno. “This new location will allow us to continue providing critical social services and extend our reach throughout the east side of Detroit.”

Generosity Rings Out:Red Kettle Season.

Some of the events surroundingthe campaign included:

The Salvation Army 2015 Red Kettle Campaign raised impressive contributions of nearly $ 8.1 million. Metro Detroiters’ generous support at hundreds of storefront red kettles was integral to the campaign’s success, with Detroit area Kroger stores alone collecting more than $ 1.5 million and corporate contributions generating $338,000 in cash donations and an additional $657,000 in-kind.

Its lobby decked with a festively decorated giant gingerbread lighthouse, the Royal Park Hotel in Rochester raised donations by selling “mittens” from a Christmas tree next to the sweet structure. All donations from mitten purchases were matched by The David W. Elliott Charitable Trust. The newly opened PARK 600 bar + kitchen also offered patrons delicious opportunities to donate by indulging in the decadent desserts on the hotel restaurant’s new menu. Proceeds from each dessert purchase also supported the 2015 Red Kettle Campaign.

The first-ever Metro Detroit Celebrity Bell Ringer Day in 2013 began as a unique and fun way to leverage the fan base of local broadcast personalities to raise awareness for the Red Kettle Campaign. The event grew last year to more than 50 well-known TV, radio, print and music personalities serving as volunteer bell ringers on an early December Saturday morning. The annual event generates tremendous broadcast and social media exposure for the campaign and perhaps more importantly encourages each celebrity’s audience to volunteer as red kettle bell ringers during the holiday season.

Detroit Red Wings Executive Vice President and General Manager Ken Holland and Head Coach Jeff Blashill earned a victory in the team’s 10th annual bell ringing competition as four groups of Red Wings players, personnel and alumni brought in a grand total of $13,699 during two hours of bell ringing for The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign. Hundreds of fans showed up at several Detroit area Kroger stores, as well as Hockeytown Authentics in Troy, to meet Holland and Blashill, as well as Luke Glendening, Dylan Larkin and Riley Sheahan, Justin Abdelkader and Darren Helm and Larry Murphy. The initiative has raised more than $100,000 since 2005.

Along with its generous corporate contribution, Quicken Loans and its family of companies sponsored the annual noontime “Metal in the Kettle” bell-ringing competition in downtown Detroit’s Campus Martius Park. An additional invaluable contribution by Quicken Loans CEO Bill Emerson, who voiced matching gift radio and television appeals that aired during the final days of kettles at storefronts, provided a significant boost in donations across southeast Michigan.

Bank of America supported The Salvation Army’s “Bountiful Boxes” program both through generous funding and assigning dozens of employees to pack nearly 8,000 boxes with holiday meal ingredients for individuals and families across Metro Detroit. Two Men and a Truck also stepped up with 10 employees and five trucks to deliver the Bountiful Boxes to nine Salvation Army Metro Detroit Corps Community Centers for client distribution.

Once again, 104.3 WOMC’s Bobby Mitchell and Stacey DuFord guaranteed a very Merry Christmas for hundreds of children served by The Salvation Army. The popular morning personalities hosted a two-day Santa’s Toy Castle event at a northern Macomb County Kroger Marketplace, broadcasting live from the store’s toy aisle. The dynamic duo’s appeal to listeners generated nearly 10,000 toys that parents selected from Salvation Army toy shops to brighten their children’s Christmas mornings.

Christmas carols filled the early-December air during the annual London Chop House Sing-a-Long Luncheon benefitting The Salvation Army, which raised over $60,000 in 2015. More than 100 guests dined on a delectable lunch by Chef RJ Scherer as they joined in singing holiday favorites such as “Silver Bells,” “Let it Snow,” and “Joy to the World” led by the musical styling’s of jazz vocalist Nicole New. London Chop House owners and event organizers Ellena, Nico and Maria Gatzaros welcomed prominent civic and business leaders, including longtime Salvation Army supporters Tom and Diane Schoenith, who helped reintroduce the fundraiser in 2012.

Radiothon: Dials Up Donations.

Among the individuals and companies’ pledging the day’s most significant contributions: Jack and Annette Aronson’s Artichoke Garlic Foundation, Garden Fresh Gourmet, Toyota Motor North America, The Salvation Army Metro Detroit Advisory Board, Dick and Gail Purtan, Edsel and Cynthia Ford, Dick Genthe Chevrolet, Ford Motor Company Fund, Tim Allen, Ally Financial, Pat Moran Chevrolet, Big Boy, NAI Farbman/The Farbman Group and Pat Milliken Ford. Without the Radiothon funding the Bed & Bread Club®, thousands of Detroiters would go without food as it daily serves more than 4,000 meals from the trucks in Detroit, as well as corps community centers throughout Metro Detroit. That’s nearly 1.5 million meals annually.

Metro Detroit’s Bed & Bread Club® Radiothon remains the largest single-market, single-day radio fundraiser in the country.

Fast Facts.The 2016 Bed & Bread Club® Radiothon raised more than $1 million thanks to a day-long interview schedule of Detroit area movers and shakers, as well as call-ins from such national guests as J.K. Simmons, Michael Bolton, Nicole Curtis, Paul Feig, Tim Allen and more. The 2016 fundraiser’s support pushed the radiothon over $32 million in total donations over its 29-year history. For the sixth year in a row, The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit partnered with News/Talk 760 WJR for 16-hours of stories and appeals led by its on-air hosts Paul W. Smith, Frank Beckmann and Mitch Albom, joined by Ken Rogulski with regular reports and interviews from Bed & Bread stops. The live event at Emagine Theatre in Royal Oak also featured an on-air shift by Bed & Bread Club® supporter Big Al Muskavito and a return to the air waves by Detroit radio Hall of Famer Dick Purtan and Purtan’s People to close out the event.

Leaving her friends and family in Arizona behind, Christine moved with her emotionally abusive husband and six children to Michigan. After 15 years of a troubled marriage, she finally found the courage to leave and begin a new chapter in her life. On a blustery December day, Christine met with her social worker to discuss her goals. Before they could discuss Christine’s enrollment in the Pathway of Hope program, she was told that she would be able to provide a Christmas for her children through The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program. As Christine wiped tears away from her eyes, her social worker handed her an envelope and said, “Merry Christmas.” In it was the exact amount to cover December’s rent. From that point on, Christine was on a journey to self-sufficiency and there was no looking back.

She established a monthly budget, registered for utility-aid programs and enrolled in community college. With the help of her social worker and partnering agencies, Christine worked hard on reaching her goals. After four months in the Pathway of Hope program, Christine can proudly say that she is the sole provider for her children. She’s able to keep up with her monthly bills and plans to enroll in her community college’s medical sonography program in the fall. “The Salvation Army is our home,” said Christine. “We have family here and I don’t feel alone anymore. I know that no matter how hard life gets, God will provide for us.”

After 19 years of marriage, Cynthia husband packed up his things and left. She had depended on him financially to provide for her and her adolescent sons. Cynthia had nothing left to lose and sought help through The Salvation Army. Through the Pathway of Hope program, Cynthia was able to work with a Salvation Army social worker to receive a wide variety of referrals to assist her and her family. She was able to get her electricity turned back on and then resolve the pending water and gas shutoffs. Once those issues were fixed, the social worker was able

to focus on Cynthia’s other needs. She signed up for DHS benefits and received housing assistance, as well as began a child support case against her estranged husband. “I don’t know how I would have got my life back together again without the help of The Salvation Army,” Cynthia said. “My sons and I would have ended up in a shelter and that’s something that I never thought would ever happen to my family.”

Families are empowered to overcome barriers by developing a network of support,

enrolling in healthy family programs and accessing resources based on the action

plan they develop with the help of their Salvation Army case worker. As families

begin to move toward sufficiency, raising hope is an integral part of the process.

The Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Division services 32 counties. Just in Metro

Detroit, 13 corps community centers provide assistance and referrals to clients,

four of which serve all zip codes in the city of Detroit. Having these centers enables

The Salvation Army to identify and assess Pathway of Hope-appropriate families.

Pathway of Hope employs an individualized approach to setting goals based on the

specific needs and progress of an individual family, with the entire process running

from six to nine months on average. Throughout the process, a case worker meets

with a family to monitor their progress, talk about any barriers to overcome, next

steps to take and celebrate families’ victories.

Once a family and case worker feel that the goals have been achieved, a

family is considered to be graduated. The biggest benefit of this

process for families is to learn to take charge, set goals and

stick to them.

With this project, The Salvation Army aims to develop a higher impact, resource-sensitive approach to direct

emergency assistance that moves away from simply serving needs. Through the use of strength-based case

management, the goal is to help solve root causes of those needs, enabling families to break the cycle of

poverty—moving from crisis and vulnerability to increasing stability and even sufficiency—from

dependence and despair to independence and hope. Over time, helping families achieve

stability reduces the dependence of future generations on Salvation Army services.

Since 1939, The Salvation Army Harbor Light System has been a place of new

beginnings for individuals throughout Metro Detroit looking to maximize their

potential for recovery, self-sufficiency and re-entry into society after battling

alcohol and drug abuse. As one of Michigan’s largest providers of detox and

residential substance abuse treatment programs, the Harbor Light System provides

an average of 35 days of service to 12,663 individuals from Macomb, Monroe and

Wayne Counties each year.

Harbor Light is in the process of implementing an important new program into the Acres of Hope campus - medical respite care. The program will provide an important safety net for homeless individuals recuperating from hospital stays while introducing a critical new revenue stream into Harbor Light operations. Medical respite care can reduce lengths of hospital stays, lower the number of emergency room visits and readmissions while improving the long-term health of homeless individuals. Research shows that homeless patients require an average of four days of additional care when hospitalized than

patients discharged to a home. The associated cost is staggering.

By introducing a medical respite program at Acres of Hope, The Salvation Army can assist individuals with nowhere to turn and help coordinate their post-hospital care. This includes providing clinical support for behavioral health and substance abuse, as well as case management, oral health, legal assistance and other supportive services. Once fully operational, Acres of Hope will have 45 medical respite beds and will potentially serve 500 people annually.

Another Salvation Army offering located within Harbor Light is the William Booth Legal Aid Clinic (WBLAC) which has operated from the Acres of Hope campus since 1994, providing legal counsel to participants of Harbor Light, as well as individuals within the community at or below the poverty level. WBLAC also serves Oakland County residents through a satellite office in Pontiac WBLAC has resolved over 20,000 legal issues affecting low income families, individuals and U.S. military veterans. The clinic provides quality legal guidance and advocacy in a wide variety of

areas including family matters, housing, credit and disability issues.

Much of the WBLAC’s funding is generated through its annual fundraiser, Walk for Justice at the Detroit Zoo. This past year’s event in April raised over $40,000. Hundreds of guests took part in the walk, including Robin Murdoch and her Fox 2 Detroit crew who broadcast live from the event. Guests were also able to enjoy a peek at the new Penguin exhibit, which had just opened to the public a few days prior.

Harbor Light regularly partners with VSP® Vision Care to give the gift of sight to the men, women, children and seniors served at Acres of Hope. In one recent visit, more than 150 pre-qualified people received free eye exams and glasses on board a fully-appointed, 45-foot, state-of-the-art VSP Mobile Eyes® clinic. As always, the three-day event was a success, especially for Salvation Army client Llesh Arapaj. Llesh was an avid reader and often escaped everyday life through the written word. When

he began having difficulty reading his favorite authors, he was concerned that something was seriously wrong with his eyesight. A patient at The Salvation Army Macomb Harbor Light in Clinton Township, Llesh traveled to Detroit for the VSP Mobile Eyes® clinic. For the first time in his life, he received a comprehensive eye exam and discovered he only needed reading glasses. Thanks to The Salvation Army, Llesh can breathe a sigh of relief and, once again, return to his favorite leisure activity – reading.

Harbor Light’s substance abuse treatment program provides:

• a detox unit offering 3 to 5 days of medication assisted treatment that includes Suboxone

• residential treatment for 30 to 90 days including individual, group and family therapy, as well as peer support

• outpatient treatment with flexible schedules featuring daytime, evening and weekend sessions

• day treatment, residential aftercare and veteran’s transitional housing

• care for individuals with specialized needs, including clients who are hard of hearing or deaf

In addition to substance abuse treatment, The Salvation Army Harbor Light Acres of Hope campus on Detroit’s west side is also home to a women’s and children’s shelter, The Salvation Army’s Bed & Bread program and a continuum of care for Detroiters in need that includes:

• Mental health services• Peer counseling• Women’s specialty program• Pastoral care• Case management• Grief counseling• Emergency social services• AA and NA support groups• William Booth Legal Aid Clinic• Pioneer Access Center

In addition to the Acres of Hope campus, there are Harbor Light facilities in Monroe and Macomb that serve clients across southeast Michigan.

This past April, The Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Division

launched an Echelon chapter here in Metro Detroit.

Echelon is an organization for adults ages 22 to 40. It’s mission is to mobilize the next generation for The Salvation Army by providing opportunities for young adults to engage in meaningful social networking, donations and fundraising, and service and volunteering. The first Echelon chapter was launched in Dallas in 2010 and has since paved the way for more chapters. This chapter has been years in the making thanks to the tireless efforts of Metro Detroit Advisory Board Chair John Latella and fellow Advisory Board member, John Below. When Latella began serving on the National Salvation Army Advisory Board, he saw the incredible impact Echelon was having on divisions throughout the country. Since that time he has worked with Salvation Army officers and community members alike to bring the same volunteer opportunities to young professionals across Metro Detroit. “I am so proud that this program is finally going to be part of the Eastern Michigan Division,” Latella said. “Young adults throughout Metro Detroit have so much to offer

this community and I cannot wait to see how our Echelon chapter will aid our neighbors in need.” Echelon members learn about programs and services by participating in social networking events and volunteer opportunities with The Salvation Army and are encouraged to raise in-kind or monetary donations toward Salvation Army initiatives. Anil Kapoor, vice president and market sales manager at Bank of America/Merrill Lynch, began his duties as chapter president in June, and is excited to begin the Echelon work. Echelon Detroit is in the process of recruiting young professionals who are interested in raising awareness for The Salvation Army, who are passionate about the city of Detroit, and who can help change communities and neighborhoods for the better. The chapter will continue its development over the coming year by creating an Echelon Executive Board and hosting an official launch.

A bread drive, in conjunction with Detroit area Kroger stores, was the focus of The Salvation Army’s 2016 Doing the Most Good Week (DTMGW) observation that brought the community, business and local celebrities together in support of the Bed & Bread program. From May 7 through May 14, Kroger hosted its 11th annual bread drive for The Salvation Army, donating one loaf for every loaf of Kroger brand bread customers purchased throughout the week. With strong support from 100.3 WNIC FM that featured podcast interviews with popular host Jay Towers and Major Jan Sjögren, the drive generated more than 50,000 loaves by week’s end, enough to serve sandwiches to Bed & Bread clients for an entire year. Doing the Most Good Week also found a number of local

media personalities joining Salvation Army Bed & Bread staff and volunteers in sharing meals with neighbors in need along Detroit’s city streets. Experiencing the plight and the appreciation of those visiting the trucks first hand were Renee Vitale from NASH 93.1 FM, Tati Amare and Chuck Gaidica from WDIV-TV/Live in the D, Rio Scafone of Rio and the Rockabilly Revival, Karen Carter from CBS62-TV Detroit and Marie Osborn from News/Talk 760 WJR. As the celebrities greeted clients with food and a smile, many responded with “God bless you” or “thank you so much.” “I love volunteer work,” Scafone said. “I believe in us all being one and this is my community and these are my brothers and sisters.”

Ford:Expands Divison’s Fleet by Two.

The Salvation Army has welcomed two new vehicles to its Eastern

Michigan Division fleet - Harrison, the Jr. Bed & Bread truck and a

new Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) canteen truck.

To officially launch the real-life Harrison, the newest addition to the Bed & Bread truck fleet, The Salvation Army took a trip to Mark Twain School for Scholars in Detroit for an assembly featuring a live reading of Harrison’s First Day, the animated tale of an obstinate truck who learns philanthropy is his true calling.

Marathon Petroleum Corp. donated one year’s worth of gas for The Salvation Army’s Bed & Bread trucks, as well as Harrison.

Patterned after the Jr. Bed & Bread Club’s animated character, the real Harrison began his life as a Ford Transit Connect and was generously customized for the student program through support of the Ford Motor Company Fund. The van was donated by Pat Milliken Ford in Redford.

Technosports, an automotive customization service based in Livonia, led the process of bringing Harrison out of the storybooks and onto the road. Harrison is serving as a philanthropic ambassador throughout the Metro Detroit area and is being used for a variety of roles; in one he offers snacks and educates children and families in need about support available through The Salvation Army’s Bed & Bread program. Simultaneously, he visits schools and organizations to promote philanthropy, volunteerism and donations to the Bed & Bread program.

The animated Harrison was first created by Salvation Army supporter and Detroit radio legend,

Dick Purtan and his daughter, comedian Jackie Purtan.

The Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Division now has a total of 13 vehicles in its emergency response fleet. The streamlined design of the newest EDS canteen enables it to fit in more confined areas to better serve the community, no matter where the need may be. The EDS volunteer team responds to calls for help from local authorities during natural disasters, as well as fire, auto accidents and other emergencies. The team provides food and beverages, blankets, clothing, temporary shelter and spiritual guidance and comfort to victims and families, as well as police, firefighters and other first response personnel at emergency scenes. Both vehicles will be instrumental in continuing to deliver mobile services throughout the community thanks to the generous support of The Salvation Army’s corporate and foundation partners.

I am proud to serve The Salvation Army on two fronts, as chair of the Metro Detroit Advisory Board, as well as a member of the National Advisory Board. I’m proud to represent our community on the national scale as Metro Detroit is viewed as innovative and successful among all the divisions. And I believe that the insight I gain in my involvement with the National Advisory Board only strengthens the good work we’re already doing in this area. I believe a seat at the National Advisory Board table helps keep our Metro Detroit board aligned with The Army’s key initiatives to benefit the people we serve. While The Salvation Army worldwide has close to 100% recognition for helping people in need, the vast majority only know us for feeding and sheltering and don’t have any idea about our extensive programs and services that make a real, lasting impact on those we assist. It’s been my goal to change that here in this community this past year, and will continue to be my priority next year. Our continued success and growth calls us to engage the entire community with The Salvation Army mission, with a particular focus on the millennial generation. We need to create an affinity among this younger age group today to ensure we have the donor base to continue Doing the Most Good® tomorrow.

In my role with The Salvation Army National Advisory Board, I am the liaison to the Young Adult Task Force Sub-Committee. Our goal is to establish Echelon chapters throughout the United States in order to drive millennial involvement, including right here in Metro Detroit. I am pleased to be joined by so many corporate leaders across southeast Michigan in brainstorming plans to inform and engage this next generation of donors and supporters.

In addition to establishing an active Echelon group, I have been challenging myself and the entire advisory board to think outside the box on several existing programs to make an even greater impact in our community. Much of our conversations have revolved around enhancements to Pathway of Hope, the Bed & Bread Club® and afterschool programs. I am proud to be part of such a giving organization. It’s a blessing to be associated with wonderful people with wonderful visions. The Salvation Army Southeast Michigan Adult Rehabilitation Center (A.R.C.) is an integral part of The Salvation Army's mission. The facility offers substance abusing men and women the opportunity to rebuild their lives through a voluntary, 180-day residential self-help program designed to establish a sense of dignity, self-esteem and personal strength that allows them to resist the desire to abuse a substance and regain their rightful place as contributing members of society. The A.R.C. has two campuses making up the Southeast Michigan Center: the Men's Rehabilitation Center located in Detroit and the Women's Rehabilitation Campus in Romulus. Completely self-funded, the A.R.C. draws its entire operating budget from the revenue of the 36 Salvation Army Thrift Stores located in Southeast Michigan.
