This report focuses on OP’s member accomplishments and achievements over the past eightmonths.Asyou read through the report youwill be struckbyboth thenumberand typesof initiativespowered by OP members working together. These include OP’s Block Booking program, theOAC’s Ontario Dances and Theatre Connects initiatives, the Municipal Performing Arts Centrepolicy alignment project, the NewNarrative +Metrics Task Force, the Ontario ClassicalMusicNetwork’s Digital Marketing Platform, the Northern Young Audience Presenter Developmentgroup, and theAudienceMapping project – all characterized bymembersworking together todevelopacollectivepractice.
While many of these initiatives have been in place for some time the network gained addedpurposeandenergyayearagowhenitsmembersgatheredinBrockvilleandcraftedThreeBoldIdeastodefinethefutureinwhichwewishtolive.
ThethreeboldideasaretocreateaNewNarrative&MetricsforPerformingArtsPresentation;harnessthepowerofDataAnalytics to build a bigger picture of our audiences; and develop an embedded culture of continuous ProfessionalDevelopmentinoursector.EachinitiativeisspearheadedbyanOPmemberdemonstratingthebountifulleadershipresourcesthatwehaveinourmidst.Aswegather forour28thannual generalmeeting inParrySound, Iwant topauseand thankall ofourmembers for theircollegialwillingnesstoworktogetherandtoourstaffandfundingstakeholdersfortheresourcesthathelpguideandsupportourwork.

OverviewOntario Presents is a province-wide network of performing arts touring and presenting organizations that workcollaboratively to facilitate the distribution of live, performing arts shows – and their engagement with citizens – intocommunitiesacrossOntario.Theorganizationwasincorporatedasanot-for-profitnetworkofperformingartsvenuesin1988andhasgrownover theyears tobeaneffectivechampion for thepracticeofperformingartspresentationandcommunityengagement.Itsmembersincludemunicipalperformingartscentres;not-for-profit,volunteer,communitypresenters;touringartists/artsorganizations,artists’agents,andindustryserviceconsultants.
Ontario Presents operates a number of participatory programs and services that help members build capacity, developleadershipandcreateopportunitiestogrowanddiversifytheiraudiences.

In2015/16,thenetworkundertookanumberofkeyinitiativestoadvanceartspresentationandsupportitspractitionerswithservicesandtools.Thisreportisdesignedtoprovideanoverviewoftheworkwe’vedoneinthepastfiscalyear,withtheyear-endmovedfromJuly31toMarch31,thereforecoveringperiodofeightmonthsonlyfromAugust1,2015untilMarch31,2016.

MemberProgramsTourBlockBooking
Ontario Presents’ block booking services providepresenting members with programming opportunities tobook artists in partnership with other presenters. Blockbooking services also offer assistance with tour co-ordination, contracting, and marketing/promotion. EachseasontheblockbookingprocessstartsinearlySeptemberandconcludesinearlyMarch.
This season 49 tours booked through Ontario Presentstoured acrossOntario resulting in339performanceswithartistfeesofapproximately2.5milliondollars.
The2016/17blockbookingseasonendedwithatotalof48tours confirmed on behalf of 23 presenting organizationsvalued at $2,108,775.00 in artist fees. This will result in329 performances scheduled in Ontario venues for theupcomingseason.
AnnualBlueSkyDay2015
Each year, our network members come together toexchange valuable information on trends, issues, andopportunitiesandtodiscusstheirplansfortheyearaheadattheannualBlueSkyDay.This season the OP’s Blue Sky Day was hosted by theRichmondHillPerformingArtsCentre.OverfortydelegatesfromacrossOntarioattendedtheeventonOctober7,2015.
The daywas divided into two parts: themorning sessionwas dedicated to the first block-booking meeting of theyear. In the afternoonartists, agents andmanagers joinedpresenters for a facilitated conversation on upcomingchallenges and opportunities in the Ontario PresentingField.Thesessionwasanopportunityformemberstosharewiththeircolleagueswhatthey’reworkingonandwhatisimportant for them and their communities.We ended thedaywithadiscussionon futureplansofworking togethertoensurearelevantandsustainableperformingartssector.
PolicyFrameworkforMunicipalPerformingArtsCentres
The Municipal Performing Arts Centre (MPAC) project’sgoal istodevelopanoptimalOperatingFrameworkmodelor a guide for municipal presenters to bridge the gapbetween the municipal operating context and the largerpresenting sector that is well established in Canada andelsewhere.
LedbyBrianMcCurdy,theMPACleadershipgroupismadeupof10-12municipalvenuemanagerswhoworktogetheron developing a policy framework for municipalperformingartscentresthatcaptureshowmunicipalPACsdeliver public benefit, and how their structure andgovernanceeither furthers theirmissionorhampers theiroperations.

Brian prepared a document called The Role of Ontario’sMunicipalPerformingArtsCentresthatwassharedwiththeMPACgroup, othernetworks, and funders. The samedayBrianmadeapresentationtoOntarioRegionalOfficeCAPFofficers to better acquaint them with the role thatmunicipal presenters play in the Ontario presenting andtouringecology.Brianhaspreparedasecondpresentationonthefinancialrealityofmunicipalperformingartscentresto make the argument that CAPF funding is essential tosupportingMPACs’ risk programmingwithoutwhich theywouldnotbeabletotakecuratorialrisks.
NewNarrative+MetricsTheNewNarrative+Metrics initiative isbeingheadedupby Eric Lariviere and SuzanneHaines. The initiative grewoutof lastyear’smembers’retreatasaBoldIdeawhereinthe Ontario presenting and touring field pro-activelyundertakestodefine itspurposeandrole in languagethatis clear and understood by presenters and theircommunities,authorizers,andfunders. AccompanyingtheNewNarrativewill be a set ofmetrics bywhich the fieldwilldefineitsprogressandbywhichitwillbeassessedbyfunders.Erichaspulledtogetherasmallteamofmemberstoworkon theproject andwill convene thegroupat thisyear’sretreat.
Community&AudienceMappingThe Community & Audience Mapping service providespresenters with easy to comprehend analyses of their
community’s demo/psychographics and social values. Itcompares the community profile with the presenter’saudiencesandrevealsopportunitiestobroadenordiversifythe programming appeal or marketing reach of existingprograms.Wewere able to use thismapping program toinvestigate performing arts audiences across theGTA anddiscoverpatterns. InJune2015,OntarioPresentshostedaworkshop to help the marketing staff from a number ofperforming arts centres use this data in their outreachstrategies.
“Because of the research that we have been able to do with Ontario Presents and Environics Analytics, we have an excellent snapshot of the social values, demographics, geography and other characteristics of our patrons. Using that information, we were able to customize our marketing messaging and tactics to grow our database to more than 25,000 email newsletter subscribers, thousands of followers on social media, 100,000 mailing addresses and more than 150,000 unique visitors to our website annually.” - Julie Fossitt, Marketing Manager for Cultural Services at the City of Kingston (Grand Theatre).

LeadershipCoachingProjectOP was successful in obtaining a $10K grant fromCAPACOA’sPresenterCapacityBuildingProgramtolauncha pilot project in leadership coaching. Jane Marsland isheading the project and engaged master coach AndrewSoren, to host a 2-day workshop in Toronto in earlyFebruary for six senior levelmanagerswhowere coachedincoach-likepracticeandreceivedanoverviewofcoachingand its benefits to personal, professional, andorganizationalgrowthanddevelopment. Eachofthesixisnow enrolled in a six-month practicum led by Andrew inlearninghowtopracticetheirskillswithcolleaguesdrawnfromtheOntarioandAtlanticregions.Atotalof19peopleareparticipatinginthepracticumwhoarebeingtrainedinStrengthsFinding,JobCrafting,GoalSetting,Resiliency,andHighQualityConnecting.ThepracticumfinishesupinearlySeptember,resultsofwhichwillbeevaluatedtodeterminenextsteps.
FieldDevelopment
CommunityEngagementLearningPlatformWith the support from the Ontario Trillium Foundation,OntarioPresentsisintheprocessofdevelopinga
CommunityEngagementLearningPlatform.Thepurposeofthis project is to assist presenters in their communityengagementpracticesandtohelpthemstrengthenthetieswiththediversecommunitiesthattheyserve.Withthehelpof the advisory group, the structure of the CommunityEngagement Learning Platform is now fully realized andclearly laid out. OP carefully selected a provider for theweb/graphic components with the goal of creating a sitethat is dynamic, fun and interactive. The online resourcetoolisnearingcompletion.WeplantolaunchthislearningplatforminAugust,2016.TheresourcewillbepromotedbyOPandothernetworksstartinginthefallaheadofaseriesofregionalworkshopstobehostedaroundtheprovince.

This year, Ontario Contact, Ontario Presents’ annualperforming arts conference, had over 250 delegatesattendingshowcases,professionaldevelopmentworkshopsand conducting business during the three-day conference.OverfiftyshowcaseandpitchartistspresentedtheirworkduringOntarioContact inLondon.Abouteightyexhibitingdelegates, including agents and artist managementcompanies and other industry delegates, exhibited in theContactRoom.Professional development workshops providedparticipants with opportunities to improve skills andcompetencies needed to continue to serve theircommunities by providing outstanding performing artsprogramming and engagement. Our keynote speakers,David Hogan and David Rogers of Victoria PlayhousePetrolia, keptus laughingwhile theymadeus thinkabouthowweviewouraudiences.The 2015 Closing Party, organized by ShowplacePerformance Centre, kicked off Ontario Contact 2016edition, which will take place November 3rd – 5th, inPeterborough.

IWantToShowcase
I Want to Showcase is a collaboration between partnerconferencesledbyOntarioContactandContactEastwhosegoalissimple:toofferperformingartistsasitethatiseasytonavigate,understandanduse.Thisnewapproachmakessenseonanumberof levelsasitallowstheartisttoapplyonline to one or more conferences, increases theirknowledgeofopportunities,andhasresulted inabroaderfield of artists to be considered. The partner conferenceshavebeguntogatherdatatosupport the impact that theyhave on developing artist careers - tracking where theartistsoriginateandhowmanyareselectedincomparisonto those that apply. Meeting several times annually theydiscusschallengesandopportunities,collaborateonsharedmarketing strategies and assist in further development ofthemarket.
There are 15 Canadian and US showcase events nowparticipatinginthisinnovativepartnership.Asaresult,wehaveamore robustwebsiteas the costsare sharedbyallinvolved.OntarioContactreceived236applicationsforthe2016 conference. The quality and diversity of artists hasincreased: 137 came from Ontario, 31 from Quebec, 23from BC, 17 from the Prairie provinces, 14 from theMaritimes,11fromtheUSand3fromtheYukon.
Ontarioartistsstilltendtodominatewith15ofthe28selectedbeingfromOntario.

PartnerPrograms
OntarioDances-OntarioArtsCouncilOntario Dances is a program of the Ontario Arts Councilthat is administeredbyOntario Presents. OntarioDancesseeks to have more dance performances in Ontariocommunities and more people engaged, interested, andinvested in dance at a local level in our province. Theprogramaimstoincreasetherangeanddiversityofdanceavailable to communities in Ontario outside of the city ofToronto.Thefundingprogramfor16/17hasbeenrenewedand will provide funding to nine, professional, multi-disciplinary presenters to present Ontario-basedcontemporarydanceontheirseasonsandattendeventsinOntario to seework. TheOntarioDances presentersmeetyearlywithothermulti-disciplinarypresenters fromotherprovinces.
TheatreConnects-OntarioArtsCouncilTheatreConnects isaprogramof theOntarioArtsCouncilthat is administered by Ontario Presents. This two-yearinitiative seeks to have more theatre performances inOntariocommunitiesandmorepeopleengaged,interested,and invested in theatre at a local level. The project alsoaimstoincreasetherangeanddiversityoftheatreavailableto communities in Ontario outside of the City of Toronto.We are awaiting final news on the continuation of thisprogram. OAC is intending to make Theatre Connects apermanent program and open it up for new submissions.Funding amounts will remain within the same, smallenvelope.OPishopefulwecangetthisrenewed.

FRESHSTART–WebinarSeriesforArtsPresenting
Launched in November 2014, theWebinar Series for ArtsPresenting is in its second year. Produced in partnershipbetween Ontario Presents and the Atlantic PresentersAssociation, the webinar series is designed to help smallbudgetandvolunteerpresentingartsorganizationsthatareoftenmanagedonapart-timeorvolunteerbasis,andhavelimited time and resources available for professionaldevelopment.
Inthecurrenteditionoftheseries,itissplitintotwolevels,Introductory and Intermediate. The levels are gearedtoward small budget, volunteer presenters with minimalstaff. By May 2016, we’ll have hosted 22 one-hourwebinars (2-3 presented each month from September toMay).Intotal,wehad641attendances,reachingabout330participants, 95%ofwhich attendedmultiple sessions. Arangeof20-60artsprofessionalsfromacrossthecountryparticipated in each webinar (30 people average). Therecordedwebinarshaveproventobehighlysuccessfulandremain an invaluable resource throughout the years. Therecordedwebinarsfromthisyear'sseriesgeneratednearly700views.
The topics were chosen based on participant’s feedbackfrom a nation-wide survey of the regional presentingnetwork in May 2015. The current series covers variousaspects of presenting, from programming and contractnegotiation to budgeting for shows, sponsorship, andstrategic planning. Participants are also learning how tofindanaudience,attractyouthandimproveengagementbyusingsocialmedia.
Based on the participants’ feedback during this currentyear, it is clear that the topics were appropriate and ofgreat interest toparticipants, butwe feelwe can increaseengagementbyprovidingparticipantswithamorein-depthdiscussionofareasofinterest.Theplanningfor2016-2017isunderway.

FRESH START - Ontario Classical Music NetworkDevelopmentforVolunteerPresenters
With funding provided by the Department of CanadianHeritage, Ontario Presents took on a project to providedigital marketing support to five volunteer presenters,members of Ontario Classical Music Network (OCMN).Participating institutions are: Cornwall Concert Series,Orillia Concert Association, Port Hope Friends of Music,Sarnia Concert Association and Welland Port ColborneConcertAssociation.
The initiativewill ensure thatOCMNmembershaveup todate Digital Marketing platforms powered by the latestonline marketing practices, which will include website,social media, e-marketing and graphic design. Tosuccessfully implement this initiative, Ontario Presentscontracted a part-timeDigitalMarketingCoordinatorwhowill work with each OCMN members on enhancing theirdigitalpresenceanddrivingattendance.PortHopeFriendsof Music are the first organization to launch their 16/17season using the platforms and the other threeorganizationsarelineduptodothesame.
FRESH START- Northern Young Audience PresentingDevelopment
With support from the Department of Canadian Heritage,the group of young audience presenters from NorthernOntariocontinuedtostrengthentheirrelationships,sharinginformation and resources as a network. Through blockbooking facilitated byOntario Presents, theywere able toplan 5 tours and 51 performances as well as one artistworkshop for the 16/17 season. Trips to 4 children’sfestivals across Canada have been planned for summer2016, which will allow the presenters to expand theircuratorial knowledge and programming options for theirseries.

FRESHSTART-NorthernDances
FRESH START- Funding from the Department of HeritageenabledtheNorthernOntarioDancespresenterstoattendtheFall forDanceNorthFestival inTorontoonSeptember29and30,2015.Inadditiontoseeingperformancesatthefestival, they attended national network meetings wherethe following topics were discussed: block booking for17/18,informationsharingwithinthenetwork,sharedwebplatforms, experienced presenters mentoring newpresenters, and, most critically, aligning the regionalprograms tobeginmoving to anational one.Thenationalnetworkmeetings gave the presenters the opportunity toengagewith theCanadiandancesceneandreturn to theircommunitieswithnewideasfordanceprogramming.
IndigenousProtocolsPartnershipProjectCAPACOAhasreceivedapprovalon itsSeedapplicationtothe Ontario Trillium Foundation to undertake a year ofresearch and consultationwithFirstNations communitieson building understanding and connections betweenaboriginalartists,communities,andmainstreampresentersandtheircommunities.OPandtheIndigenousPerformingArts Alliance (IPAA) are partners on the project withCAPACOA taking the lead. Results from the Seed projectwill be used to apply for a 3-yearGrowgrant to launch asystemic change initiative that will connect thesecommunities and build bridges of understanding betweenthemandtheirformsofexpressivearts.

Event Producer, Judy Harquail and Toronto ConferenceChair, Chris Lorway headed a very successful 9-person,Canadian delegation to Utrecht in April 2016 to promotethe IAMA Toronto event, November 10 – 12, 2016. ChrisLorwaymade an excellentpresentation thatwas followedbya4-minutevideoshowingthepeople,thesites,andthecity that will welcome delegates to Toronto. Confirmedfunding by all levels of government includes theDepartment of Canadian Heritage, Canada Council for theArts, Ontario Arts Council, and the Toronto Arts Council.IAMA has opened its registration for the Toronto event.

OurNetworkTheOntarioPerformingArtsPresentingNetwork(OntarioPresents) is a network of peers working together toadvancethepracticeofartspresentationinOntario.Inyear2015/16, the network is comprised of 134 artsorganizations, including presenters (volunteer and paidprofessionals), artist agents and managers, serviceprofessionals,artistsandsupporters.

NewNetworkPortalandFeeStructureIn January 2016, Ontario Presents launched the newNetworkPortalandmembership feestructure.Tomake iteasiertojointhenetworkandrenewmembership,thenewfeesareflat(nomoreformulas!),withtieredPresenterandConsortia fees that are based on an organization’s annualbudget. Moreover, to widen the network and encourageparticipation, Associates from the same organizationmaynow be added at no extra cost. The new portal optimizesaccess to and participation in the network. It includesnetworkdirectorywithparticipantprofiles,auser-friendlysign-up form and network participants’ discussion forumfor members to connect with colleagues and share theirknowledge.
WebsitesOntario Presents continues to operate four websites: themain Ontario Presents website, the Ontario ContactConference and Showcase Application websites, BlockBooking online platform, and OAC’s Ontario Danceswebsite.
JobBoardIndustry Specific Job Board is located on the OntarioPresents website. Members can submit their jobopportunitiestobepostedontheJobBoardfreeofcharge.
BlogAn online Blog space on Ontario Presents’ site allows fornetwork updates and for members to post their stories,share ideas, and learn about their colleagues across theprovince.
DiscussionForumLocated in the Members Area of the Network Portal, theDiscussionForumisdesignedtohelpmemberstoinstantlyreach the network's wealth of knowledge by posingquestion, offer tips and advice, and provide answers tocolleague’s questions. Members are encouraged tosubscribeinordertoparticipateintheforum.
OnlineResourcesTheonlineresourcespage includesusefuldocument, linksdocuments and webinars pertaining to each category ofMembership,fromprofessionalandvolunteerpresentingtoartistsandartistmanagement.
AdSpaceThe ad space, available on both Ontario Presents andOntarioContactwebsites,servesasaspotlighttohighlightimportant initiatives and increase visibility in thepresentingandtouringsectorinOntario.Adsaredisplayedonalmosteverypageofthewebsiteandrotateaswebsitevisitors move from page-to-page. eNewsletterOntario Presents continues to issue its monthly networkeNewsletterwithindustryandmemberupdates,upcomingevents, granting programs deadlines, and announcementsrelatedtotheannualconferenceOntarioContact.Membersare encouraged to submit their industry relevantannouncements for publication in the network eNews. Inthe past year, readership increased to include over 2,300industry professionals. Ontario Presents eNews averageopeningrateis40%.
OnlineMeetingPlatformOntarioPresentscontinuestouseAdobeConnectservices,a communications platform, to facilitate webinars,information sharing, and address urgent communicationsneeds between members, networks, and otherstakeholders. Ontario Presents is ready to respond byoffering to its members an online space to meet, work,shareandnetwork.
OntarioPresents/OntarioContactMobileAppAvailablefordownloadforAndroid,iPhoneandBlackBerrymobile phones, the App includes two apps in one: 1)Ontario Presents Mobile App with industry eventsthroughout the year and 2) Ontario Contact App withOntario Contact conference events. After Ontario Contact2015, thenumberofappusers increasedfrom395to563industryprofessionalswhohavedownloadedtheappto
their mobile devices. The total of app launches has alsoincreasedto3,328(2,448in2014,1,644in2013).
