Message from the Director

Dear Friends,

Your commitment to the health of our communities continues to amaze and inspire all of us at PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center. On behalf of the Foundation’s Board of Directors, I thank you for your generous and giving spirit. It is because of you that your medical center continues to provide care close to home.

During the past year, the Foundation, with your help, has funded many projects and programs. In January, PeaceHealth St. John opened the Kearney Breast Center after a successful $2.4 million dollar campaign. You also funded a new coastal van service, which allows us to being patients in for services when they might not have the transportation they need. Another needed purchase was for eight Vital Sign Monitors to gather timely and accurate patient data while in our care. These are just a few examples. It is with your support that we are able to fulfill these and other needs to help the medical center serve our patients.

Our Foundation Board is a special group of individuals. These volunteers give generously of their time, guidance and treasure so that our Foundation can help provide for the needs of our hospital in order to improve the health of our communities. We are truly grateful for each and every one of them.

As you look through this report, I hope you will share my pride in the work we have done together. Thank you for believing in our mission and for standing beside us as we continue to strive for excellence in care for all who walk through our doors.

A SURVIVOR’S TALE

Jodi’s Journey

With the support of her PeaceHealth Medical Group Oncologist Dr. Prakash Thapaliya, Jodi knows she will be a survivor.

“I’m 46.”

Jodi Hanson’s grandmother was only 46 years old at the time she was diagnosed with breast cancer. When Jodi went to the PeaceHealth St. John Kearney Breast Center on December 20, 2013, this quiet thought plagued her mind.

In the midst of the center’s construction, Jodi was one of the first patients able to use the new 3D mammography machines. “I didn’t think much about the 3D at the time; but afterwards, the doctors let me know if it weren’t for the 3D technology, they would not have found the cancer for another year,” Jodi said. “It would have been another story.”

It was on New Year’s Eve that Jodi received the news that there was an abnormality with her test; a biopsy was scheduled. It was carcinoma and testing showed that both chemotherapy and radiation were needed.

Jodi’s husband, Joel, became her biggest champion. There were moments when Jodi would come home from a treatment, exhausted emotionally and physically, feeling unable to do another. “He would say to me, you’ve got this. You can do one more,’” Jodi said. “And then the next time, it would be one less.” Joel, however, is reluctant to accept the credit. “She’s a hero, she’s my hero.”

With the support of her PeaceHealth Medical Group Oncologist Dr. Prakash Thapaliya, Jodi knows she will be a survivor. “I’m very thankful for the care that I’ve been given; it has been the best care from the very beginning,” Jodi said. “I feel super blessed.” Your gifts made this technology possible. PeaceHealth has embarked on a new journey to change health care, focusing not only on treating illness, but also seeking to prevent disease and improve the health of our community, starting with our children.

To support this journey, the St. John Foundation is launching a three-phase, multi-year pediatric campaign that will focus on emergent needs, chronic conditions and wellness from conception to adolescence. Funds raised for the campaign will ensure children receive family-centered compassionate care each time they enter the doors of PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center.

Phase one of the campaign will

• give our children and their families kid-friendly emergency reception areas

• create our first Pediatric Clinic

• purchase the equipment needed to track and reduce radiation and ensure healthy fetal growth

Last year alone, more than 8,500 pediatric patients were seen in our Emergency Department. Nearly 18,600 children were seen in our adult clinics and more than 17,000 obstetric patients received care. In 2013, we had 439 pediatric CT scans in our Imaging Department.

December’s gala, A Star Affaire’s ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, kicks off the pediatric campaign, led by co-chairs, Dr. Kim Stoneking and his wife Lillian Stoneking, PA-C. It is sure to be a magnificent night and a wonderful start toward our goals.
