Dear Parents, Faculty and Staff, Alumni and Friends of ISB,

Each year, we publish a Report on all aspects of our school, looking back on student achievement over the course of a year, planned improvements and campus upgrades, key demographic and enrolment

information, as well as a brief summary of the finances and capital resources that sustain the business. The Annual Report tells the story of our school and helps us determine whether we are truly living up to

our Mission and meeting our Goals.

The year’s Report is a snapshot of the school year 2014-2015, structured around the four building blocks of the school’s Plan.

With healthy enrolment and huge support for the school from donors, volunteers, and partners, both within and outside the community, this was a year in which the school made significant progress on many fronts. Many of the projects and initiatives outlined in the school’s Plan were launched and, in

some cases, completed. I am personally grateful to each one of my fellow Trustees, as well as the hun-dred of people across the ISB community who have worked so hard to make this progress possible.

The 2014-2015 school year was also one in which we recognised the end of fourteen years of out-standing service by the outgoing Director, Kevin Bartlett. I am delighted that the Board of Trustees was able to recognise this contribution to life and learning at ISB by re-naming the new High School building after Kevin, as well as, in partnership with the ISB Foundation, launching the The Kevin Bartlett Leader-ship in Learning Award, which will provide funding for one or more ISB faculty, administrators, or staff to

pursue professional development opportunities in the area of educational and school leadership.

In July 2015, following a successful search process, Lee Fertig joined us, along with his family, as the new Director of ISB. I would like to recognize all those who worked so hard to ensure that this impor-

tant transition in the school’s history went so smoothly. We are delighted to welcome Lee and his family into the ISB community and look forward to many years under his leadership.

Those of us who are fortunate enough to be a part of this community know that a special place it is, particularly for our children. From speaking with alumni around the world, we also know that it is a

place that remains special long after people have moved on to other parts of the world. I trust that, by reading this brief summary of the 2014-2015 school year, we will be reminded of why this is “more than

a school” to so many.

Building LearningThe Common Ground Curriculum at ISB is designed to develop Independent Learners and International Citizens through a coherent,

challenging learning continuum.

Below is a summary of some of the outstanding achievements of our students during the 2014-2015 school year, from external examinations results to success in the theatre, on the sports fields, and in the context of numerous service projects.

International Baccalaurate (IB) Examination ResultsThe International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is a course of study which is taken by students in their final two years of high

school. It is an eclectic and in depth high school experience. Students choose six subjects each taken from a specific subject area such as science, languages and humanities.

The International School of Brussels was among the first fifty schools in the world to offer the programme. The Diploma Programme has been an integral component of the life of ISB and shares much in common with the educational values of ISB’s own Diploma programme

and learner profile.

Building LeadershipISB is a leading international school rooted in a powerful mission of inclusion, challenge, and success for all students.

The role of the Board of Trustees and school’s Leadership Team is to ensure that this mission drives all aspects of life and learning at ISB.

The school also regularly gathers feedback from a variety of sources, including surveys and parent focus groups. During the 2014-2015 school year, feedback was also offered from the school’s Five Year Accreditation Report.

This feedback is regularly used to monitor and adjust the school’s Strategic Plan.

Our Strategic Plan: Building Learning

New Jobs, New Learning

In response to the shifting nature of the world of work we will be offering new learning for new jobs in new technologies.

Update

Courses have been added and upgraded in the Middle School in Engineering Design and Design.Code.Play to coincide with the school’s new design labs. A unit in Coding has been added to all Middle School maths levels. The High School has completed the

introduction of Computer Science and is currently planning the launch of Design Technology in the near future.

Languages for Life

We plan a major transformation of our language programmes based on three connected initiatives: a school-wide shift to a dual language approach, vacation language camps and a comprehensive mother-tongue programme.

Update

At the end of the 2014-2015 school year, summer language camps were once again offered in association with BELL. In partnership with CLL, we launched a pilot after-school Home Language programme for Elementary School students in Spanish, Arabic and Greek. This successful pilot is today providing the basis for a more extended programme for several languages and ages in 2015-2016 and

beyond.

Leading the Learning Business

ISB will continue in its role as an international thought leader through its two global partnership projects, The Next Frontier: Inclusion (NFI) and The Common Ground Collaborative.

Update

NFI is already a global project, working with over 100 schools. During the 2014-2015 school year, the Common Ground Collaborative (CGC) was established as a registered, separate, non-profit organization to be co-led by Kevin Bartlett following his departure from ISB

in June 2015. Our school will, in perpetuity, remain the genesis school for the CGC and will enjoy special privileges within the global Collaborative.


Our Strategic Plan: Building Leadership

A Leader for ISB

We will choose a new ISB Director with the conceptual understanding, competencies and character necessary to lead ISB confidently to the next level in its evolution.

Update

In February 2014, The Board of Trustees announced Mr. Lee Fertig as the new ISB Director. Lee took up the position in August 2015.

Student Leaders of Tomorrow

We will build the future leadership capacity of our students by providing multiple opportunities for them to lead today.

Update

We are creating multiple opportunities for student leadership and innovation, including the recent Big Day Out in Brussels and Think Big events.

Teacher-Leaders Driving Change

We know that schools only improve with the committed energies and skills of multiple leaders throughout the organization. We are offering high-level leadership training for our faculty together with multiple, innovative opportunities for teacher leadership.

Update

Teacher-Leaders are now trained for the role and are increasingly actively engaged in change management throughout the school.


Our Strategic Plan: Building a Community

Community Learning Institutes

We will continue to expand opportunities for students, teachers and parents to learn real world skills at shared events.

Update

Community learning events, such as the Big Day Out in Brussels, Think Big, Student Professional Learning Institutes, as well as the World of Work Careers Day are now a regular feature of learning at ISB. They bring together parents, students, faculty and staff, and

members of the school’s alumni community. In the Zone was the most recent example of such an event, building on the Think Big Day in 2014.

Home Language Programmes

We will better support each language community by providing learning in every student’s ‘home language’.

Update

As mentioned above, our partnership with CLL is proving very productive. During the 2014-2015 school year we added after-school programmes in Spanish, and Arabic and Greek (See above: Languages for Life)

Leaving ISB

We will better support our departing community members as well as we do when they arrive.

Update

The ISB Foundation and the Family Association, together with our own Admissions and Advancement Team, are working on a series of connected strategies around the theme of ‘every departure and arrival’ to make sure that, whenever students and their families leave ISB,

everyone still feels part of the permanent ISB global community.

Completing our Community

We will add a crèche for our youngest community members and expand after school care.

Update

A Day Care service, offered in partnership with Zein Childcare, opened in January 2015 and is already seen as a welcome addition to ISB’s suite of services.


Our Strategic Plan: Building a Campus

Securing our Home

Our lead goal is to do everything we can to buy Kattenberg 19, the land on which ISB stands. This will be a momentous, historic achievement.

Update

The Board has modified this plan for strategic reasons, seeing it as more advantageous to the ISB community to negotiate an extended lease on favourable terms, preserving capital for investment in the quality of learning and facilities for current and future students.

Negotiations for a 99-year lease are ongoing.

During the 2015-2016 school year, the Board of Trustees adjusted this goal to also ensure that the Campus remains a secure environment for all members of the ISB community. A number of upgrades have already been made to the the school’s security strategy

and plans are being draw up to construct a perimeter fence.

Solving the Parking Problem

We will reduce the stresses and strains of mobility by building well-designed underground parking facilities.

Update

Following carefully gathered feedback from parents and other stakeholders, the Board has modified this strategy. Rather than investing capital in parking facilities, the Board has established a multi-stakeholder working party to develop, pilot and implement a series of

smaller, incremental measures designed to steadily manage the parking issues towards a solution without a sudden, difficult impact on any stakeholder group within our community.

Creating the Château Commons

The Château car park will be replaced by a green space enhancing the beauty of the Château de Fougères and providing a new space for the community to come together.

Update

This goal may be affected by the approaches immediately above, so is currently on hold.

Transforming Elementary Facilities

Building on the success of our High School, we will begin to plan for a transformative new Elementary School building.

Update

We are working to a full 10-Year Plan, including (towards the end of this plan) the construction of a new Elementary School. In the meantime, The Board approved the completion of the re-structuring of the Elementary School interior, following the pattern of the

improvements already accomplished, which have had such a positive impact on the Elementary School learning environment.

tradition of strong relationship between the Board of Trustees and the school’s Leadership, as well as a willingness regularly to gather feedback on how well we are doing as a school has ensured continuous progress towards a shared vision and resilience in the face of

The FinancesISB is a non-profit school dedicated to its Mission and vision: an inclusive community where all are challenged and find their own success; a school that develops Independent Learners and International Citizens on a Campus in which all buildings, grounds and

services reflect our beliefs and values. This vision is simple but ambitious. It is also real, and requires realistic financial support.

So how do we achieve it? The answer is through many years of sound governance and careful financial management, steadily building the reserves we need to achieve our long term goals. In recent years, it has become apparent to us that, to complement these reserves

and achieve our goals, we will increasingly reply upon gifts to our Annual Fund and a capital fundraising programme.

Summary of Enrolment 2014-2015

Enrolment remained strong during the 2014-2015 school year. A total of 1563 students passed through the school during the course of the year.


Building A CommunityISB is more than a school.

It is a complete community, serving the needs of students, teachers, staff, parents and alumni, either directly or through successful, collaborative partnerships. For us a positive culture and community are not ‘accidental’. If everyone is to be included, challenged and

successful then it cannot be left to chance.

Our StudentsOne of the most striking features of ISB is the extraordinary sense of community and the welcome it offers to families from countries all

around the globe. We celebrate this diversity and the opportunities for learning that it brings.

Our Family Association

Our Alumni Community

ISB welcomes back graduates, former students, past parents and former faculty almost every day of the year, from all corners of the world. Our alumni community is truly global and we aim to stay in touch via communications and events with as many of our alumni as

possible. We work closely with active alumni and Class Representatives to support alumni gatherings in many locations in Europe, Asia and North America.

You come from an international web of innovators and influencers held together by the bonds of lifelong ISB friendships and alumni gatherings that happen regularly all over the world.

During the 2014-2015 school year, alumni gatherings were held in New York, Washington, DC, Atlanta, Seoul, Korea, and here in Brussels.

The ISB Annual Fund is our yearly giving campaign to all members of the local and global ISB community. Thanks to the ISB Annual Fund, we are enhancing and adding programmes that directly benefit our students, community and school today, making possible:

The ISB Foundation

The mission of the Foundation is to aid, assist, foster and promote the education of American and foreign students, both in the United States and Europe, and to disburse or contribute its income to charitable or educational organizations in accordance with decisions

made by the Board of Directors.

The ISB Foundation, Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation, incorporated in New York in 1964. Over the past years the Foundation has supported a range of projects at the International School of Brussels.

Gifts made to the Foundation are tax deductible to the extent provided by the law. The Foundation is a charitable organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the International Revenue Code.

Our Partners

During the 2014-15 school year, ISB was honored to partner with a number of world-class external organizations to offer a new and exciting range of programmes and services at ISB. These include CLL Language Centres, Zein International Childcare, BELL, and Oxford

Study Courses, Greenlight for Girls, Brussels Sports Association and Special Olympics Belgium.

Via the High School World of Work Programme students, at the end of grade 11, were also given the opportunity to take up two-week internships. We would like to thank each of the partner corporations and non-profit organisations in and around Brussels that kindly

Building A CampusGreat learning demands great learning spaces, designed to match the vision for learning, teaching and assessing expressed in the

Common Ground Curriculum, designed and implemented at ISB.

As implementation proceeds, we are building brilliant learning environments based on the principles of flexibility, visibility and community. Each building is an integral element in a coherent and comprehensive plan to create a ‘common ground campus’, shaped by our vision for

learning and community.

During the school year 2014-2015, the Board of Trustees invested a total of 5.2 Million Euros in campus improvements and upgrades.

Elementary School: Renovated top floor with new classrooms

Middle School: New science labs including a world class maker space

Metairie: New band room and strings room

High School Annex: Extended foyer, community lounge, and new drama rooms

International Community Centre: New dance studio
