ACCREDITATION COUNCIL

Karen McCargar – Chair

Mandate: In 1979 the Canadian Association for Co-operative Education (CAFCE) established the Accreditation Council. Council members from across Canada articulate and review accreditation criteria for effective Co-operative Education programs as the needs of students, employers and institutions evolve. The council met in October 2011 and February 2012 in Toronto, and again in Whistler in July 2012. Accreditation was approved for programs from Dalhousie University, Ecole de technolgie superieure (ETS), Mount Saint Vincent, University of Manitoba, University of Ottawa, University of Prince Edward Island, Saint Francis Xavier University, Simon Fraser University, University of British Columbia, University Victoria, University of Lethbridge, University of Regina, University of Windsor and University of British Columbia After participating in discussions about changes to the current criterion, council members decided not to recommend changes to reduce the work experience minimum to less than 30% of the time spent in academic study. The council recommended that the Board consider how CAFCE can serve members who do not meet the current definition of co-op and accreditation criteria (such as those with one or two-year programs and only one work term). Jenny Reilly developed an online application template and a PowerPoint application tool with the assistance of Jeela Jones. During the CAFCE conference in Whistler, Karen Reimer, Mary Murphy and Rocco Fondacaro made a presentation to promote accreditation using a further enhancement to the application guide developed earlier in the year by Jones and Reilly. The new guide links specific application questions to appropriate part of the Standards and Rationale document. It is planned to put the new guide on-line to assist those in preparing accreditation applications. and Rocco lead a session on emerging trends with Jenny Reilly and Jeela Jones. Jeela Jones provided a submission on formative and summative assessments for our Best Practices communication to CAFCE members. Rocco Fondacaro took over as chair of the council at the July meeting, with Sonya Horsburgh as chair elect, Lisa Barty as secretary and Karen McCargar becoming past chair. Thanks to Jenny Reilly for her valuable contribution and leadership as an executive member of the council during the past four years. CO-OP DEFINITION COMMITTEE Norah McRae – Chair

The Definition Committee presented the following amendment to the Board for approval at the September, 2011 Board meeting. CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATION WEEK COMMITTEE (March 19-23, 2012)

Kirk Patterson – Chair

Mandate: To coordinate the National Co-operative Education Week during the month of March. Co-operative Education Week in Canada is a CAFCE and a National celebration of Co-operative Education that the Universities and Colleges are asked to recognize within their institutions and community for a day or the entire week. It is that time where co-op institutions honor the best of Co-operative Education. The institutions can celebrate by recognizing their “outstanding” co-op student; their “outstanding” co-op employer; and or their own “outstanding” co-op staff member. It is a time in Canada when co-op practitioners wave the flag of Co-operative Education in Canada and in the world. Co-op practitioners and institutions should be proud of their accomplishments and give recognition to all the employers and students that are a key to the success of Co-operative Education and what it gives to our nation. Canada wins with this mode of education that the universities and colleges offer to their students – upon graduation, the country gains a select group of individuals that have been trained in a “work-integrated” environment who will enter the Canadian work force with key employment skills. Canadian employers value these graduates and are able to utilize them upon hiring into permanent positions. Co-op practitioners and institutions should be proud of themselves and their colleagues that are committed and give of their time and energy to ensure there are job opportunities for students seeking co-op work terms, but more so, we have to thank those employers that provide “work-integrated” experiences for the students in partnership with the educational institutions. Without employers, students and co-op staff, Canada would not have the strong Co-operative Education system that is recognize near and afar throughout the world. Please start to think of a plan for your institution for National Co-op Week activities the week of March 18th to 22rd, 2013 and join the Celebration of co-op in Canada! Thanks to the initiative of Stuart Billings and Adam Brayford at Simon Fraser University, a special website was created for a CAFCE Co-op Week (2012) Social Media Contest (http://www.coopweek.com/) that drew post-secondary co-op students from across Canada to the site. Sinan Leylek from the University of Manitoba was the grand prize winner ($200 Future Shop Gift Certificate). At CAFCE 2012, I advised Adam that I will once again sponsor the prize for the media contest or whatever he decides to run with. I will increase my sponsorship to $500.00. On March 16, 2012, Ed Holder, the Member of the Parliament announced National Co-operative Education Week (2012) on the floor of the House of Commons. On March 22, 2012, Glen R. Murray, the Ontario Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities announced National Co-operative Education Week (2012) to the Ontario Legislative Assembly. I recently met with Mr. Ed Holder about doing the same for 2013 and he has asked if we can have more information available for him before the end of this year. I have advised him I would like to schedule a meeting in Ottawa to discuss. We encourage member to keep visiting http://www.cafce.ca/en/co-op-week for more information on the March 18-22, 2013 plans to start your campus celebration. If anyone has ideas or would like to be part of this committee, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] Co-op Week Committee Members: Kirk Patterson, University of Waterloo Lisa Whalen, Georgian College Stuart Billings, Simon Fraser University Adam Brayford, Simon Fraser University

INTERNATIONAL CO-OP COMMITTEE Marc-André Daoust and Laurie Lahn, Co-Chairs

Created in late 2010, the International Committee functions as a working committee to coordinate international CAFCE initiatives that support the mobility of Co-operative Education students abroad and in the U.S. To support this initiative, the committee focuses on three (3) main areas:

Resources – the development of a central depository of international resources and guidelines

Student Engagement – to share co-op experiences and encourage co-op students to expand their professional growth through work terms abroad

Partnerships – to research, develop, and engage in mutually beneficial relationships to support a collaboration of international practices and exchanges

The committee had three full group meetings (January, March and August 2012). Certain members of the committee also met several times to coordinate and organize two Webinars that were offered to CAFCE members and even to international partner associations. In 2011-2012, the International committee:

1. Gathered more than 20 student testimonials (co-op students that worked abroad) and posted them on the CAFCE Website.

2. Gathered and organized various international resources that were posted on the CAFCE Website to help CAFCE members.

3. Organized and hosted the Webinar entitled: "Everything you need to know to help students with an International job search" – offered to CAFCE Members in January 2012. a. Webinar was then offered to our peer organizations in Australia and the U.K. in May of 2012.

4. Established a partnership with Cultural Vistas in which they become CAFCE’s preferred J1-Visa provider and CAFCE members get a preferential rate. It’s a two-year partnership.

5. Organized and hosted a free Webinar to help CAFCE members understand the partnership with Cultural Vistas.
