Pastor’s Message

2011, The Year of Mission

Christmas and New Year Greetings,

It can be said emphatically that Tuskawilla is most truly a

missional congregation. With the dark clouds of global recession

and gloomy economy lingering over us, we inaugurated this year preparing and praying to bring

the Gospel of Christ into the nooks and crannies of our culture and community. This was our

hope, but we had no idea just how grand God’s vision was going to be. During The 40 Days of

Community God surprised us by raising up 110 people to engage our community with the Mes-

sage of Hope, through local projects and ongoing service.

Many of you then plunged in to deeper waters, taking part in the follow up study, Just Walk

Across the Room, learning to articulate and share your faith in a way that was authentic and

actually felt effective. By the month of June some of you were so moved by those experiences

that 22 of you organized a mission trip to Fort Blackmore, Virginia, where you passionately

went to work, helping those living in rural Appalachia.

All the while here at home during the summer months, our ongoing acts of compassion

continued. Many of you volunteered with the Sharing Center, partnered with HOPE, partici-

pated in Meals on Wheels, visited our shut-ins, tutored at the Edgewood Children’s Ranch,

just to name a few.

By the autumn, the missional momentum we were experiencing guided us to incorporate our

younger children into some of these great endeavors. All the children who took part in our

Wondrous Wednesday program during the fall, shared in a variety of important mission projects

week-to-week, writing letters to soldiers and shut-ins.

With the overwhelming news that homelessness among children in Seminole County continued

to skyrocket through 2011, in September we began a joint partnership with Families in Transi-

tion and Tuskawilla Middle School as a primary outreach of our church. This is a partnership

that will provide numerous opportunities to care for local families who are struggling.

If that new venture wasn’t exciting enough, then came the announcement by Tom and Lisa

Hullinger that they were establishing Christ the King Charities as a 501(c)(3) not for profit

organization, to bring humanitarian relief and Christian hope to Little Saints Orphanage of

Lagos, Nigeria, eventually to Casa Emanuel in Romania, as well as to local group homes here

in Central Florida.

With the year winding down, I would presume folks might have decided to take a deep breath

and choose to rest from all the life changing Gospel work they’ve tirelessly engaged. And yet,

in October over 50 TPC volunteers served at this year’s Community Hoe Down where we

witnessed the greatest community participation we’ve ever experienced.

The grand finale for 2011, Christmas in the City, was held on December 17. Each year we part-

ner with over 20 churches, in a coalition called One Body, to offer a celebration in downtown

Oviedo which carries the spirit of Christmas into the homes of over 300 needy families.

Friends, it can honestly be said, that countless families have been touched and transformed by

Christ, through the ongoing love, service, and sacrifice of the saints at Tuskawilla Presbyterian

Church.

A few years ago, I asked the question, “Would anyone notice if TPC were no longer here?”

We can certainly respond in a cacophony of praise, the answer to that question is resoundingly,

“YES!”

I wait in grand anticipation to see what God’s plans are for us in 2012.

Board of Deacons

According to the Book of Order, ”The ministry of deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of compassion,

witness, and service, sharing in the redeeming love of Jesus Christ for the poor, the hungry, the sick, the

lost, the friendless, the oppressed, those burdened by unjust policies or structures, or anyone in distress.”

Providing Transportation: Transportation services for doctor’s appointments, therapy needs and

church services are coordinated by the Deacons with assistance from the congregation. In 2011, the

Deacons provided 24 rides.

Providing Meals: The Deacons continue to work with members of the congregation to provide meals.

In 2011, 7 were delivered to members as needed.

Memorial Services: In cooperation with the Church Circles and other volunteers from the

congregation, the Deacons assisted with 3 memorial services and receptions in 2011.

Cards, and Phone calls: In 2011, the Deacons mailed 373 cards to members. This included birthday,

anniversary, and get-well cards. In addition, 132 phone calls were made to our homebound and other

members.

Visitations: The Deacons continue to visit our sick and homebound members. In 2011, the deacons

made 62 visits.

Flower Delivery: A very appreciated ministry provided by the Deacons is the delivery of flower

arrangements, each Sunday and on special occasions to the sick, the homebound, and to local nursing

homes. In 2011, 29 flower deliveries were made.

Coordinating Resources: The Deacons continue to provide contacts for special resources. The

resources become helpful for the congregation and outside requests for assistance. Many phone calls

requesting food, rent assistance, etc. are received by the church office and followed up by the Deacons.

Deacons are involved with Oviedo’s Hope Organization as well as with Families in Transition, an

organization that provides family necessities for Seminole County’s homeless families.

Special Programs: In 2011, the Deacons participated in the Mission Fair the church had in March.

Our display board explained what the duties of the Deacons are, and provided a sign up sheet for people

who wanted to volunteer to help with meals, transportation and memorial services. In November, the

Deacons along with the finance and Service and Mission committees gave Publix Gift cards to 4

families who needed assistance with their Thanksgiving dinner. In December, the Deacons provided

lunch to choir members and Youth who participated in the annual Christmas Caroling program by

visiting 8 homebound members. The Deacons also baked cookies for each homebound person. In

December, the Deacons together with the Finance and Service and Mission teams gave Am Ex and Tar-

get Gift Cards to 8 families in need of assistance at Christmas.

2011 board of Deacons: New Deacons for 2011 were Jerry Harned and Bob Gray. The Deacon leaving

the board in 2011 is Jeff Meyer. New Deacons are Steve Allison, Helen Daly, Carol Farlow,

Pam O’Toole, Carol Perry, and Janet Schwartz.

Church Planning Retreat (CPR) Task Force

“I will confirm my covenant with you and your children after you, from generation to

generation. This is the everlasting covenant: I will always be your God, the God of all

generations.” Gen 17:7

I. Background Preparation of the Session and Planning Team --Vision Statement

During the past few years, the Session has read and discussed several books and viewed several

DVDs relating to church planning, including, Transitioning – Southerland; The Barbarian Way

– Erwin McManus, Purpose Driven Church – Rick Warren; DVDs based on the book

The Present Future – Reggie McNeal; videos by Michael Frost based on the book

The Shape of Things to Come, and books relating to the missional church.

In addition, the Session has held retreats focused on church planning, church growth and the

missional church; including a retreat in Spring 2009 with Pastor Tom Christian from Haines

City Presbyterian Church serving as facilitator and a retreat in Fall 2010 with Pastor Case Thorp

from First Presbyterian Church of Orlando as speaker/facilitator. Also several Session members

have visited local churches which have had successful growth programs in recent years

including Trinity Presbyterian Church in Satellite Beach.

At this point in the planning process, the session established the Planning Team made up of

active elders and congregation members and charged this committee with a two-part task. The

first past was forming a Vision Statement for TPC and the second part was developing

strategies for moving TPC towards its vision. The Vision Statement provides a picture

of where TPC wants and needs to be.

In developing the Vision Statement, the Planning Team viewed several of the DVDs reviewed

by Session and several members of the Planning Team visited Haines City Presbyterian Church.

They toured the campus and attended all three of their Sunday services. The Planning Team

worked for over eight months developing the Vision Statement and it was presented and

approved by Session in Fall 2010. In late 2010, it was presented to the congregation.

In Fall of 2010, the Planning Team was informed that the Marshall Marketing Company, which

had recently done a survey concerning church planning for Haines City Presbyterian Church

was willing to do a similar survey for TPC at no charge. The Planning Team presented this to

Session which approved TPC conducting such a survey.

Next, the Planning Team approached Session for its help in forming the Strategies for which

would assist TPC in reaching its Vision.

II. Gathering Input - Church Planning Retreat, Survey, etc.

In an effort to gather data which could guide the Session in developing a plan for the near and

distant future of TPC and help the Session develop strategies to move TPC towards its Vision

Statement, several opportunities for input from leaders and the congregation were provided.

This included several Monday Night Leaders Meetings where leaders and Team members were

invited to meet with Pastor Chris, view a DVD study and discuss TPC’s future. At the first

meeting, more than 35 attended.

In the Spring of 2011, a Church Planning Retreat was held in the Fellowship Hall; more than 50

TPC members attended. This retreat was facilitated by Pastor Tom Christian from Haines City

Presbyterian Church. A very active discussion took place and several ideas relating to the future

of TPC surfaced.

The survey of the congregation conducted by Marshall Marketing took place in June 2011. The

results of the survey are presently being reviewed and correspondence with Marshall Marketing

is planned to help the Session obtain a deeper understanding of some of the results. This input

from the congregation will be used to help develop future plans for TPC.

III. Responding to Input Gathered

Formation of Church Planning Retreat (CPR) Task Force

An Ad Hoc committee of the Session developed a plan for review and implementation of the

ideas received from the Church Planning Retreat and from other sources. The Committee rec-

ommended that three sub-teams be formed: 1. Ministry Team - responsible for drafting a Master

Ministry Plan at TPC, 2. Facility and Property Team - responsible for drafting a Master

Property Plan for Facility and Property Development and 3. Financial Team - responsible for

drafting a Financial Plan for TPC in terms of upgrading existing property and funding new

program and needs which are associated with plans for the future at TPC.

The Committee also emphasized the desire for implementation of the goals. To this end, a

Church Planning Retreat (CPR) Task Force was established with the responsibility of

shepherding the timely implementation of the ideas and plans which surfaced during the

gathering of input.

The ideas which were received at the Church Planning Retreat and other sources have been

assigned to appropriate teams where they are being reviewed for implementation. For example,

“taking Children’s Ministry to the next step” has been referred to the Discipleship Team.

There were 26 such items which have been assigned to various teams.

IV. CPR Task Force and Sub-teams

In early summer 2011, the CPR Task Force and the three sub-teams were formed and began

work. Monthly reports which updated the status of each Team’s responsibilities with respect to

planning and implementation were submitted to the Task Force. The CPR Ministry Team met

over the summer and fall of 2011. Each member of the CPR Ministry Team was assigned as a

liaison to existing church ministry teams which were assigned Goals from the Church Planning

Retreat. The responsibility of each liaison was to gather information from these teams on : the

status of assigned CPR Goal(s) , immediate needs, expansion of existing programs, new

programs needed, and "dreams" for team in distant future. In each of these areas, space needs

and personnel needs were requested .

The CPR Ministry Team submitted a summary report to the CPR Task Force in

mid-December. Presently, CPR Task Force is reviewing this report. The space needs included

in the report will be forwarded to the CPR Facility and Property Team for exploration and

study. The personnel needs included in the report will be forwarded to the Personnel Team.

After the CPR Facility and Property Team makes its recommendations the CPR Financial team

will draft its financial plan.

V. Prayer

It should be mentioned that from the very beginning this process of forming plans and strategies

for the Near and Distant Future of TPC has been bathed in Prayer. The Vision Statement of

TPC has been kept in the forefront of our minds at each step of the way. Indeed, we are

continuously praying that the plans which come forth from this process are part of God’s

plans for TPC.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9 (The Message)

“Love GOD, your God, with your whole heart: love him with all that’s in you, love him with all

you’ve got! Write these commandments that I’ve given you today on your hearts. Get them in-

side of you and then get them inside your children. Talk about them wherever you are, sitting at

home or walking in the street; talk about them from the time you get up in the morning to when

you fall into bed at night. Tie them on your hands and foreheads as a reminder; inscribe them

on the doorposts of your homes and on your city gates.”

2011 Annual Report

Operating Fund

We began 2011 with much optimism after a very successful pledge season. Pledges for 2011 amounted to close to

$450,000, and we budgeted contributions from members at $445,000.

Total receipts budgeted were $489,000, including loose offerings, the preschool's contribution, and facility contri-

butions.

Total collections of pledges during 2011 (this excludes designated and special gifts) were $452,293.

The congregation has responded in a wonderful way in a difficult economic environment, resulting in the very

good report below:

As of December 31, 2011, TPC owes approximately $728,000 to Wachovia Bank on its mortgage, a reduction of

$44,000 in principal over the year.

Designated Funds

Designated funds include the preschool, reserves, mission related items and other unbudgeted church-related ac-

tivities such as flowers, Presbyterian Women, Youth Funds, Shirley Lee Garden, church repairs, etc.

During 2011, Mission giving outside the budgeted amounts was about $16,000. Other church activities generated

gifts and proceeds of about $20,000.

The Preschool has an annual budget of about $400,000.

Endowment Funds

In 2002, a gift to TPC was partially used to set up a permanent endowment for the church. Generally, only the

investment earnings from the endowment may be spent. During 2005, Session designated $73,000 from another

special gift for investment in the Fund. After withdrawals in 2010 ($35,000) and an up-and-down stock market,

the value of the fund on December 31, 2011 was $262,648.

Thanks to Midge Black who has contributed her time to aid in counting and recording the weekly receipts.

Many thanks are also due to Daun Cooper who serves as our very competent bookkeeper. Much appreciation is

due to Tammy Neel for her service for the past three years as Co-Treasurer of TPC.

TPC School

The Preschool Program of Tuskawilla Presbyterian Church celebrates its 29th year of operation! We

closely follow Seminole County’s school calendar. The program is licensed with DCF, and complies

with all applicable DCF, Seminole County, and State of Florida regulations. We are also participants in

the state Voluntary PreKindergarten Program. We are a staff of 24 dedicated professionals. We are

blessed to be at capacity with 166 preschool children. We work conscientiously to achieve the overall

goal and focus of our mission statement while introducing each child to Christian principles in a safe,

nurturing, and supportive environment. We encompass a planned academic curriculum that fosters

independence, encourages respect for others, values creative play and promotes a positive approach to

learning. Under the guidelines from the state that all VPK providers have an approved curriculum, we

use The Creative Curriculum. Weekly Chapel (with Pastor Stacy) continues to be a special time, as

does Music, Literacy, and PE.

The School continues under the direction of the School Advisory Board. The Board reports to the

Christian Education Committee, which has responsibility of the school to the Session. By directive of

the Session, the school program is totally self-sufficient and makes a yearly contribution of to the

Church.

We wish to thank the congregation, Pastor Chris for the continued support, prayers, and encouragement

of the program.
