FOR the LOve OF ARt And COmmunity

As I reflect on McColl Center for Visual Art’s first decade, the first things that jump to mind are not attendance or budget numbers, though they were healthy this year in spite of the shaky economy. I don’t think about our amazing building, a stately, historic Gothic Revival church that more and more people are coming to love. Artists, usually first in my thoughts because we have had hundreds of amazing, creative professionals, don’t intrude on my reflections.

I see faces in my mind’s eye. Thousands and thousands of faces that bring memories of all the individuals we touched and transformed in this last year and during the last decade.

I see teens crowded around Joyce Scott, hanging on her every word, as she talks about her mother’s quilts and her own majestic bead creations. I see a program officer from a national foundation face-to-face with environmental artist, Daniel McCormick, in the middle of a Freedom Park forest, locked in deep conversation about water- cleansing sculptures. I see a hundred glowing smiles at St. Patrick’s Catholic School during a butterfly release celebrating a garden sculpture they made with former resident artist, Tom Thoune. I see a klatch of business executives wrestling with the seed of an idea in our Innovation Institute, wondering if they can make it grow.

This year and for many years I have witnessed these and many other happy human events springing forth from encounters with contempo-rary art and artists. It strikes me that our successful artist-in-residence program is the catalyst for joy, sorrow, contemplation, investigation and camaraderie. Those and other transformations happen when artists are included in community conversations. That’s the reason we exist, for the love of art and community, and for all of the intrigue that unfolds when they combine.

This annual report includes descriptions of many magical moments. If you haven’t already, please come to the Center to be inspired by what we have to offer. I believe you will gain a whole new insight into human expression and its meaning in making this a wonderful place to live.

LORi mCgeeBoard Chair

Congratulations, McColl Center for Visual Art! The 2009-2010 year marked the 10th Anniversary for the Center. It’s hard to imagine that in a mere decade, a burned-out church has been transformed into one of the top three artist-in-residence programs in the country. The Center has been an inspirational stop for artists from South Africa and New Zealand to Korea and the United States. We were pleased to welcome back several “early” alumni like Nick Cave and Franco Mondini-Ruiz for our festivities.

The Center continued to grow its community outreach efforts -- projects like Daniel McCormick’s Freedom Park environmental art only prove that the public yearns for more collaboration. Our education programs move forward with ongoing Art Teachers-In- Residence as well as expanded partneships with schools like St. Patrick that encourage and promote students. And, the Innovation Institute graduated its tenth successful core class for business leaders and conducted custom programs for many more!

In an economic year where there is much uncertainty, the Center remains financially solid and well-positioned for the next 10 years. We proudly salute our artists who have spent time at the Center and those who are yet to come - artists are at the core of everything we do.

Kudos to Suzanne and the incredibly energetic Center staff for their leadership, innovation and perseverance. It has been an amazing journey, and we excitedly look forward to the future!

Kym mOtLey And AShLey LAtheCo-Chairs, Contemporaries Board Members

Fiscal year 2010 was an important year for the Contemporaries. Not only did we host another successful Palate to Palette art and wine pairing event in October 2009, with growth to 155 guests, but we also improved the membership structure and strengthened the Contemporaries events. Members now have the option of joining as an individual or as a couple with a discounted price. Each membership includes a donation to the Center and provides support for the Contemporaries activities and events. In order to encourage more participation by and interaction with the Center’s artists, all current and past artists-in-residence are eligible for free membership with the Contemporaries. We hope that they will take full advantage of this great benefit. In the past year, the Contemporaries established three series to engage prospective and current members by focusing events around common themes. The themes include Through the Lens: The Art of Photography, Behind the Scenes, and Collector Tours. We kicked off the Through the Lens: The Art of Photography series in June with a visit to DOMA Fine Art Photography Gallery in South End which featured intriguing conversations with the gallery owner, Gabrielle Larew, and former Center Affiliate Artist, Raymond Grubb.

One of the great things about the Contemporaries is the diversity of the membership base. True to its mission, the Contemporaries group offers creative opportunities for individuals with an intellectual curiosity about contemporary art while expanding and cultivating this interest through interactions with resident, local and regional artists, collectors, curators, and gallery owners. It is truly a group for people interested in contemporary art, regardless of their age, profession, or level of knowledge. During the last few months of fiscal year 2010, the group heightened its focus on social media, which provided a new way to raise community awareness and increase membership numbers and activity. The Contemporaries now have our own Facebook page (facebook.com/contemporariesNC) and twitter feed (twitter.com/contemporaries) where you can find all the latest news and upcoming events.

Having assumed the responsibilities of co-chairs of the Contemporaries Board of Directors in January 2010, we are both excited about the year ahead and look forward to getting to know our fellow members at Center events and out and about in the community.

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS

With the help of our marketing partners at Wray Ward, the Center’s brand, graphic identity, website and digital media strategy were transformed for the launch of our ten year anniversary celebrations.

Numerous celebrations were held for supporters of all stripes to commemorate our ten year anniversary including Community Day and an opening reception for Decade + Collected, which was attended by over 1,300 people and offered a retrospective of our first ten years and included works of alumni artists from private collections.

In addition, receptions were held at the beautiful homes of Zach and Emily Smith and Wesley Mancini and Bob Sheer, and a reception for Joyce Scott was hosted by our Board and the Board of the Founders Circle of the Mint Museum of Craft + Design. The year’s signature event, Bank of America Night of Nights, featured a dinner in artists’ studios for 325 guests and honored our founders, Hugh McColl Jr., Ed Shelton and Stuart Dickson. Studios displayed passion and a love for creativity and the arts, each transformed by the creative vision of each artist. Night of Nights was a night to remember, a fitting finale to our first decade and flying launch into our next ten years.

A formal relationship was forged with the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts+Culture that will enhance collaboration, education and outreach efforts at both institutions. McColl Center for Visual Art will host a Gantt Center Artist-In-Residence every residency session, and joint education and outreach programs will bring together the constituents of both institutions, mixing up audiences and community members. Long-time Center Director of Residencies and Exhibitions, Ce Scott, will now serve as the Creative Director of both McColl Center for Visual Art and the Gantt Center for African American Arts+Culture.

The NC Secretaries of Cultural Resources and Commerce were welcomed at the Center for their announcement of the creative industries impact study – the creative industry fuels 300,000 jobs and $40 billion in revenue (more than banking and transportation.)

THE GABI AWARD

Thanks to a grant from the Reemprise Fund of Foundation for the Carolinas, the Center created and announced The Gabi Award, named for the late Gabi Nikosi, an African artist who through her art helped people in her country confront the ravages of poverty and AIDS. Gabi was an artist-in-residence at the Center in 2003. The first Gabi Award went to New York artist and alumna, Joan Bankemper, who during her residency in 2001, created a community garden in Fourth Ward that united elderly public housing residents with their affluent neighborhood through gardening. The relationships created by Bankemper’s project are emblematic of creativity’s power to transform a neighborhood and society.

CONTEMPORARIES

We invigorated the Center’s affiliate group, the Contemporaries, by working with them to create new bylaws and elect a slate of officers. The Contemporaries annual signature event, Palate to Palette, drew more than 155 people who enjoyed sampling pairings of wine and contemporary art. Thanks to efforts of the new Board and enhanced digital media strategies, the following for their events continues to grow.

EDUCATION AND OUTREACH

The Center engaged in hundreds of community partnerships including work with four hundred students at Smith Language Academy facilitated by artist Shaun Leonardo. Photographer Lisa Holder worked with United Family Services on domestic violence issues. Abdi Obsman engaged the Charlotte Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual and Transgender community on a public awareness project focused on gay identity issues in Charlotte with funding support from the Charlotte Lesbian and Gay Fund of Foundation for the Carolinas. Sculptor Rebecca Aloisio created a mural for Habitat for Humanity at the group’s East Charlotte headquarters. Painter Darren Goins collaborated with Charlotte Area Transit System to help create a community-inspired public art project at a local transit maintenance facility. Charlotte Nature Museum, Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation, Catawba Lands Conservancy, the Carolina Thread Trail and Queens University worked with environmental artist Daniel McCormick to construct a beneficial environmental art installation that addresses run-off, soil erosion and purifies water before it enters a creek system at a local public park. Sculptor Tom Thoune worked with St. Patrick’s Catholic School to help students create a permanent mosaic sculpture for their garden. The Hearst Foundations in New York invested $50,000 to support these programs.

EXHIBITIONS

The Center presented four major gallery exhibitions: Decade, a retrospective of our first ten years; Collected, featuring 30 diverse works of alumni artists from private collections; Recall, the first Charlotte solo show for renowned craft artist, Joyce Scott; and Fried, the return of former artist-in-residence, San Antonio artist, Franco Mondini-Ruiz, in all of his inventive glory. These exhibitions were complimented by the constantly updated and evolving displays of our resident artists in the second and third floor galleries. 3,625 people attended the Center’s opening receptions.

ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE AND AFFILIATE ARTISTS

The Center continued to expand and develop our circles of influence though exclusive artist-in-residence partnerships with Carolinas HealthCare, University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Charlotte -Mecklenburg Schools. These relationships served as models to allow us to create the new Environmental Artist-In-Residence and Gantt Center Artist-In-Residence efforts. In June, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation in Miami awarded the Center $80,000 to add celebrated artists to our residency program to augment the Center’s local, national and international profile.

19 artists held residencies from as near to us as Charlotte and from as far away as Cairo, Egypt. Artists-in-Residence worked in a variety of materials: painting, film, fiber, installation, photography, drawing, sculpture and environmental materials.
