CPS-CE DEVELOPMENT GRANTS CPS-CE invites CPS faculty and staff to apply for funding that will support the creation and further development of programs and/or courses for graduate and non-traditional audiences. Preference is given to proposals that create partnerships with school districts, agencies, business and industry, and professional groups. The desired outcome is for enrollment in these programs/courses to be the result of partnerships vs. mass marketing. This program has grown significantly since it began in 2004. In 09-10, the CPS Cabinet approved 17 grants totaling $39,000 for the development of partnership programs and online and hybrid courses.

SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATIVE DISORDERS In 09-10 the CPS-CE supported and collaborated with the School of Communicative Disorders to offer 5 professional development graduate courses. SCHOOL OF EDUCATION In 09-10 the CPS-CE office supported and collaborated with the School of Education on the following projects and courses. Highlights include the following:

• CPS Continuing Education has continued to nurture the relationship with the Marshfield Clinic Youth Net Program. CPS-CE has collaborated with Continuing Education from Letters and Science to begin frameworking a one day workshop to address the needs of the Afterschool Network in Central Wisconsin. The Marshfield Clinic Youth Net staff Randy Neve and Jennifer Knecht are still integral in the is process and have identified other key players in afterschool programs that include UW Extension programs as well as the Wisconsin Afterschool Network. CPS CE is working with School of Education Faculty and Staff to identify possible speakers on education specific content the group is asking for. The workshop is planned for August 2010 and is expected to draw roughly 40-60 participants from afterschool programs in central Wisconsin. While credit is not a current option, we are partnering with Letters and Science Continuing Education to put together this non-credit workshop to address the needs of this underserved group. There are tremendous opportunities with this audience and we will continue to nurture the relationship.

• The Teacher Induction Year program was offered in 3 school districts this past year, including Shawano, Wisconsin Rapids, and Adams-Friendship. A total of 40 students enrolled in the course. This was a decrease in 18 students however the Wausau School District which has historically participated, declined as they hired only one new teacher this past academic year. Pat Shaw, Pat Marinac and Cathy Scheder have introduced or discussed the TIY program to school superintendents through their district visits this past year. Several administrators seemed especially interested in participating in this collaborative opportunity with UWSP.

6

• The New Teacher Academy specifically tailored to the Stevens Point Area School District started its second year with 36 teachers participating in the fall term- all brand new teachers, and 44 teachers participating in the second semester, in phase II of the original agreement with UWSP and SPASD.

• CPS-CE continues to coordinate most of the courses for the newly approved Gifted and Talented Add on Certification program (014) and works with Dr. Christine Gould to register students and provide information on the program. In conjunction, Pat Shaw, Chiristine Gould and Cathy Scheder had a conference call with Carol Zabel from CESA 10 regarding how to partner and provide the new GT certification to their audiences. CESA 10 is a brand new partnership initiative.

• CPS-CE continues to participate in PK-18 Council activities in partnership with the School of Education.

SCHOOL OF HEALTH, EXERCISE SCIENCE AND ATHLETICS In 09-10 the CPS-CE office supported and collaborated with the School of Health, Exercise Science and Athletics on the following projects and courses.

• The 2010 cohort for the 910 add on certification program has been slow to grow. At the end of the fiscal year we have 14 enrolled in the program, down only 2 students from the previous cohort. This program has been challenged by students dropping out of the cohort due to changes in their district and job responsibilities.

• The DPI Best Practices in Physical Education and Health Workshop was offered on the UWSP campus in the summer of 2009 and is an excellent example of collaboration between DPI, HESA, UWSP Continuing Education Conference and CPS-CE. DPI provided scholarship dollars specifically to students in the Health Education component for the first time. The conference pulled in 100 attendees at the conference with 53 pre-conference participants and resulted in 34 students taking additional credit which is a 56% increase over the previous summer.

• The 860 add on certification in Adapted Physical Education saw a leap in applicants which is at 16 for the 2010 cohort starting June 2010. .

SCHOOL OF HEALTH PROMOTION AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT In 09-10 the CPS-CE collaborated with Health Promotion and Human Development to offer 39 courses and assist with the following programs:

Master’s in Human and Community Resources (currently 29 students active in the program): Worked closely with the graduate office assistant and met regularly as a member of the executive

graduate committee to improve consistency in protocol/procedures and increase program exposure in the form of open houses, public information sessions, conference displays and new graduate student orientation. Seven new students were accepted into the program. Four students graduated from the program.

• Worked with the department to develop a partnership with the Portage County Business Council Foundation as the Leadership Portage County program was incorporated into one of the courses within the Human and Community Resources Master’s program.

• Offered add-on credit in conjunction with the National Wellness Institute Annual Conference. Master’s in Nutritional Sciences:

• Worked closely with the graduate office assistant and met regularly as a member of the executive graduate committee to improve consistency in protocol/procedures and increase program exposure in the form of open houses, public information sessions, conference displays and new graduate student orientation. Four new students were accepted into the program.

The 210 add on Family and Consumer Science Graduate Certification Program: • Assisted faculty in offering courses with flexibility to meet the needs of the first cohort as they

neared completion of the program. Sixteen students have completed the program. Eight students also need their initial license and are continuing to take the coursework required to meet the requirements for that.

• Marketed and recruited applicants for the 2010 cohort. Fifteen students have been accepted into the 2010 cohort.

Assisted the department in exploring an opportunity to partner with UW-Continuing Education and other UW campuses in order to offer an online Bachelor’s degree in Wellness Management

SCHOOL OF HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONS In 09-10 the CPS-CE again supported and collaborated with the School of Health Sciences in offering the following: • CLS100 “Health Occupations” in partnership with the Stevens Point Area School District: CLS100 is a

2-credit online course offered each semester during the academic year in conjunction with SPASH’s Family & Consumer Sciences “Health Occupations” course. In 09-10 eight SPASH junior & seniors received dual credit while learning about career possibilities in the healthcare field. Since the course began in Fall of 2006, seventy-three students have taken this course. Thirty-one students have gone on to apply and take courses at UWSP. (42%)

• Several independent study bridge courses were offered for students transferring from other institutions so pre-requisite and program requirements could be met.

DIVISION OF INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE In 09-10 the CPS-CE worked with the Division of Architecture to provide the following:

• CPS-CE paid out a grant to provide new instructional materials for the NCIDQ preparation course. Last year, the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) announced changes for the national exam. Because of this, the exam preparation course provided by the Division of Interior Architecture was canceled and plans are in place to redesign the course to address the changes in the exam.
