3Annual Report 2014

I am happy to know that Radio Madhuban 90.4 has completed four successful years of broadcasting as a community radio station.

Run by the service-oriented Brahma Kumaris, from its headquarters in Mt.Abu, Rajasthan, your radio station has been striving hard to realize its potential as a medium to articulate the needs and aspirations of the communities that live in that area. The station’s programming over the years has not only emphasized community development, but also reflected local identities and cultures.

It is laudable that the spirit of voluntarism that underpins community radio globally is so conspicuously visible in the operations of Radio Madhuban. As the country is witnessing the emergence of a new generation of community radio stations, I hope Radio Madhuban and its dynamic staff and volunteers will serve as peer mentors and take the sector to new heights.

I wish Radio Madhuban renewed energy and commitment for continuing the good job that it has been doing.”

Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia wishes the entire team of Radio Madhuban 90.4 FM on the completion of four years of operations in the region. In these years, Radio Madhuban has not only undertaken several impactful projects but has also established a strong connection with the local community.

It gives me pleasure to know that their team is actively participating in regional and national workshops and conferences to enhance their skills and create interesting solutions for the community. What strikes me most about the programs is the fact that they all impart some value-based message with good entertainment.

On behalf of CEMCA, I wish the team of Radio Madhuban a glorious future and hope that they continue to serve the community with the same joy and love.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The past four years have been very eventful and Radio Madhuban has been constantly trying to strengthen and channelize its efforts to help in holistic development of the community. In this regard, the entire Radio Madhuban team of volunteers have been focusing their energies to truly help the local people in more than one way, to understand their problems and involve them in the solutions. The team has been growing ever since the year of inception and a lot of young and talented volunteers have worked with Radio Madhuban on different projects and programs to bring out appreciable results. We currently have a team of 18 Radio Jockeys and a support team of over 17

volunteers who assist in different capacities in various projects and related tasks. 5 new members joined our team this year, to put us one step closer to fulfilling our vision of making Radio Madhuban a complete community driven initiative. The team started 2 new shows to cater to the demand of time and community. We now broadcast 26 shows in a week and 18 hours of fresh content. The establishment of Radio Madhuban Community Society (RMCS) was a great milestone in the year-long journey. Several community development projects that were carried on by Radio Madhuban have now been undertaken by the Society and have been running in a more organized and regular manner. The creation of RMCS also rises opportunities for acquiring the requisite support and sponsorship for these community building and village-outreach projects and events. This year, Radio Madhuban also organised a mega community event, titled “Sakhi Swasthya - mini marathon, run for health”. Over 500 women participated and we received lots of appreciation. We are in the middle of another mega Talent Hunt that is aimed at increasing community participation.

The team has also been very actively participating in various conferences and seminars in order to promote our efforts and also learn from other’s experiences. Our team participated in 7 different regional, national and international conferences organized by governmental and independent bodies in different parts of the country.

Radio Madhuban 90.4 FM has been striving hard to set the developmental process in swift motion in Abu Road. We have completed 4 years in serving the community, building partnerships and forging bonds that shall hopefully last for a long time. It is only with everyone’s support that we have come so far.

Radio Madhuban organized an inter-school painting competition on the theme for students of classes 5th to 12th on 13th February 2014. The topics for the competition were “I love Radio”, “Community and Radio” and “How has Radio Madhuban changed my life”. We received over 300 entries for the event and gave away prizes to top three winners in both the categories. The idea behind the competition was to spread awareness about Radio Madhuban in the local community and engage local people in the activities of Radio Madhuban Community Society. Social development and community upliftment are dynamic concepts and need rigorous efforts.

Every community has evolved and sustained in a unique manner, different from any other community, and therefore development of a community requires wide-ranging and complete understanding of not only its culture and tradition, but also of its problems and people’s perspective towards a social change.

Not every community accepts change very easily. Moreover, while it is easy to bring about some changes, certain modifications take time. Through active and constant community involvement, Radio Madhuban realised that to bring about a phenomenal change in the social, economic and psychological lives of people in Abu Road, the team will have to reach out to the local community.

Radio Madhuban has organized and participated in several village outreach programs this year.

To stop child marriages and to bring about awareness in the community about its consequences

Child marriage is a serious human rights violation affecting an individual’s rights to health, education, equality, non-discrimination and to live free from violence and exploitation. To protect these rights, Radio Madhuban diligently carried out its Awareness Campaign to arrest the endemic child marriages that run rife during this time of the year.

A 15 days long Radio Awareness Campaign was launched by Radio Madhuban on 21stApril 2014 in which opinions and views of local people and personal experiences of women who got married at a very early age were shared with our listeners for 3 hours daily. Village outreach programs were also organized with the help of Asha Sahyogni from various Aanganvadi, Abu Road.

The families of these children were very reluctant to understand the gravity of the problem and were steadfast at first. Later, they could realise the severe outcomes of child marriage.

Our team was successful in directly stopping 2 marriages and also reported many others to save lives and preserve the future of children. The local government officials were really thankful for the help given by our team in this regard and Radio Madhuban created awareness about the negative effects of child marriage.

To preserve the local cultural heritage and help in documentation of community traditions

Abu Road is a tribal area with a highly diverse population. There is no documented account of its ethnic and cultural diversity. This way, a lot of traditions and social variety are getting lost with time.

Team Radio Madhuban organized a comprehensive survey of the local community and documented details of eight local ethnic groups, namely Garasiya, Bheel, Kohli, Gawariya, Meghwal, Muslim, Maali, Prajapati communities to preserve their cultures and also identify their unique traditional heritage and bring it in front of the world.

The communities were happy to share their experiences and information about their traditions. It gave them an opportunity to know each other better and also to share their stories and folk tales. People from communities other than these also came forward to share about their cultures.

This created awareness and spread information about the different ethnic groups and enhanced the level of knowledge of people about these communities. It helped in the preservation of local cultures and conservation of their heritage and tradition.

To stop child labour and provide a chance for a better future to children involved in waste picking

Close to about two per cent of India’s urban population is involved in recycling work. Children, some of them as young as four, comprise about 20% of the total number of waste pickers in an average Indian city. Our team was moved to see some of these children at the Abu Road Railway station. This has severe consequences on their health and growth.

Our team initiated teaching 19 such kids. Faced with reluctance and opposition from their families, it was a difficult journey that lasted for about 10 months after which, we could successfully admit them into local schools in Abu Road.

The children were extremely grateful for the opportunity and wanted to learn. However, the families posed lot of issues initially, but later they agreed to let their children go to school.

These children have comfortably adjusted in their new schools and have been performing well. This has also encouraged other children involved in waste picking to learn. The perspective of parent’s towards education has had a change.

An essay competition was organized for students, faculty and staff of schools in Abu Road on the topic “Vision India 2025”. Participants were encouraged to come up with an image of India of their dreams and motivated to include their innovative ideas about their motherland.

We received 350 entries and we selected top three winners in each of the three categories.

This event has a tremendous impact on the academic community of Abu Road. It not only created awareness about the India’s national features but it also encouraged the use of Hindi and English among them.

To help in skill development and improve the employability of youth. The project is focused on promoting the radio operations as a profession among students.

Drug De-addiction

To bring awareness about the detrimental consequences of drug-abuse and protecting the community, especially the young population from its reach

Abu Road has a very high level of drug abuse. It is almost customary to offer cigarettes and other drugs to guests at home and people gather in groups to involve in such activities. Radio Madhuban has been actively fighting against this menace since the past 3 years and felt it to be necessary to continue with this project.

Rallies and de-addiction campaigns were organized in schools in 14 villages in Abu Road for 2 weeks from 18th July to 2nd August 2014. School students were encouraged to participate in the rallies that went around the villages to spread the message of drug de-addiction.

Many people came forward to share their ideas about the theme and its bad effects in life through personal experiences. Children were very enthusiastic during the campaigns and reached out to the entire village with sign-boards and posters in hand.

It not only created awareness among the 700 students involved in the campaigns but also encouraged the families and other adults to not involve in drug-abuse. It was a mass movement for Abu Road and it has supplemented our struggle against drug addiction.

Radio Madhuban Listenership Survey and Research 2014

Background

Radio Madhuban 90.4 FM will be completing four years of its operation in January 2015. At this juncture, we felt the importance of knowing our growing listener community and also scaling our progress.

The team at Radio Madhuban conducted a survey of selected 10 Panchayats in the region for this listenership survey. The primary focus behind selecting these villages was to conduct a wide ranging research of our community and understand the needs of all sections of people living in the Abu Road society.

The team carried out an in-depth Listenership Survey and Research to ascertain the reach, exposure, composition, and community environment in the context of Abu Road, Rajasthan.

Radio Madhuban has always ensured dynamic content that appeal to the local public and aims to reach out to each individual in the region. To do so, a need was felt to understand our target group and take a feedback of our initiatives from our audience so as to help in planning, policy formulation and qualitative improvements for our operations.

We have assumed a responsibility to ensure best value of time for our listeners and strive to stay true to the public purpose set out in our principles and also in the Code of Conduct set out in the CR National Policy (2006) chalked out by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting.

While planning and designing the audience research program, a variety of information about the audience were taken into consideration and thus the questionnaire was drafted accordingly. The questionnaire contained 8 multiple choice answer type questions for our audience. It was designed carefully, keeping in mind the local community and the information required. Any personal information gathered during the survey has been kept confidential and shall be shared with other parties only in special cases.

Methodology

One of the most familiar research methods for undertaking such a task; Sample survey method was used to conduct this listenership research. The villages were selected and the team of Radio Madhuban was divided into groups. Each team was assigned 2 Panchayats and maximum effort was put in to select a representative sample from the intended population. The findings of the data was then applied and generalized to the whole population of the region. The teams took about 5 days’ time each to complete the survey for assigned region. Later, data entry was done and interpretations were made.

Villages selected for the survey research :

Kiwarli, Panduri, Santpur, Bahadurpura, Deldar, Ore, Kui, Derna, Khadat, Morthala, Tartoli, ChandravatiMawal, Redva Kalan, Talwar Naka, Umarni, GankaDanvav, Amthala, Kyara, Mordu, Mudarla, Siyava, Girvar, Nichlagarh, Aval, Mungthala, Jambudi, Bosa, Abu Road, Mata Devi.

We noticed that only 22% of the listeners have a radio set in the region and about 75% of the listeners use mobile phones for listening to radio shows. Only about 5% of them listen to radio shows in their car while driving.

In Short : Most of the people listen to radio either during the evening from 7 to 10 pm or during the early day time from 8 to 1 pm. This primarily has two reasons. During this time, the men are usually at home and therefore the entire family can listen to radio on mobile phones. The second, duing these timings, the shows that are broadcast focus on culture, tradition, music and value based enternainment.

The lack of radio sets prohibits peole from listenting to our shows and deriving benefit from them. About 65% of the people who do not listen to radio, which is 25% of the entire sample surveyed, point of the unavailability of radio sets for not being able to listen to Radio Madhuban.

Due to low level of literacy in the region, it is difficult to gather large audience for shows that focus on science, education, technology, sustainability, environment and matters that strictly concern development and health.

65% of the people who do not listen to Radio Madhuban cannot do so because they do not have access to either a radio set or a mobile phone.
