WELCOME WORDS - PRESIDENT OF MLAVS
“Dear Friends,It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the XXI Mediterranean Congress of Angiology and Vascular Surgery which will be held in Genoa 1-3 December 2011 under the Presidency of Prof C. Campisi. I am sure this Congress will be a successful one and will give the opportunity for scientific dialogue and communication at its highest level.
The Mediterranean League of Angiology and Vascular Surgery has a multidisciplinary character, and provides a unique forum for discussion of all critical issues concerning the management and care of all vascular patients. Furthermore, MLAVS has the mission to foster progress and mutual understanding between all professional groups dealing with vascular diseases in the Mediterranean region, and to promote advance research.
The special field of interest of the President of the XXI MLAVS Congress will ensure more specific and extensive focus on Lymphatic Disorders.
It is beyond any doubt that the economic crisis has also affected the organisation of Medical Congresses. However, I am sure that the efforts of the Organising Committee as well as the beautiful environment of the City of Genoa will ensure a successful Meeting.
On behalf of the Executive Board of the Mediterranean League of Angiology and Vascular Surgery I wish you a very productive and pleasant Meeting.
Welcome in Genoa!”
Nicos Angelides MD, PhD, FRCSPresident of the Mediterranean League of Angiology and Vascular Surgery

GENERAL INFORMATIONCongress VenueGALATA MUSEO DEL MAREAddress: Calata Ansaldo De Mari, 1 - 16126 Genoa (Italy)Phone: +39 010 2345655Open until 7.30 p.m. and closed on Saturdays www.galalatamuseodelmare.itGalata Museo del Mare The old port in Genoa is a very interesting place for those who are fond of exotics of the Medieval Italy. There are a lot of sights there, the Sea Museum is one of them. The Galata Sea Museum (Museo del Mare) was opened in 2004 and became one of the most popular place on the excursion routes round the old Italian city. It is located in the oldest of the buildings of the municipal docks, restored by the Spanish architect Guillermo Vasquez Consuegra, who covered the original early seventeenth century building with steel, glass and wood. Galata Museum is the largest museum of this kind in the Mediterranean region. Besides the Museum in Genoa there are three analogous museums in the world: in London, Stockholm and Barcelona. The total area of the exhibition halls of this sea museum is more than 10000 sq km. The Sea Museum in Genoa is also famous as Galata. This is the name of the old building of the port dock in Genoa. This building was an ammunition depot of traders and seafarers known all over the medieval Europe. The exposition of Galata Museum tells about the development of sea trade routes, about the interaction between the man and the sea. The oldest exhibits of the museum belong to the latest medieval period. The rich collection consists of more than 6000 exhibits and gives a unique opportunity to follow the progress of the sea exploration starting from the galleons of the epoch of Christopher Columbus and finishing with modern gigantic transatlantic liners. Galata Museum is arranged on four floors, starting with the large Galea. Spectacular reconstruction of ships and historic scenes, multimedia stations and spectacular audio-visual effects complete the wealth of nautical instruments, atlases, nautical maps, arms and antique pictures on show. HOW TO REACH THE CONFERENCE & EXHIBITION CENTREBy car Take the “Genova-Ovest “ exit and then go towards the city centre for about 2 km (Via Milano - Via Gramsci). You will find a car park right next to the Galata Museo del Mare.By train Genova Porta Principe railway station (5 minutes on foot) or by bus, numbers 2 or 5 or 9 in “Caricamento” direction.By underground The best station to arrive in is “Darsena”

GENOA AS A CITYThe Urban Area of Genoa has a population of about 900,000; the city covers an area of 243 square kilometres, between the Ligurian Sea and the Apennine Mountains and stretches along the coast for about 30 kilometres. Genoa, the Superb, is the city of Doges and Sixteenth century splendour as well as a place for contemporary culture. It has a wonderful medieval district with beautiful churches and museum also with palaces and towers built between the late XVI and the early XVII centu-ries and owned by noble families, that are still largely intact. Genoa is the city of contrasts: it has Italy’s largest port but nearby there are crowded beaches in Corso Italia; in terms of the light, it is dazzling when looking out to the sea from the hills, dark and slightly threatening in the core of the old town. Genoa surprises people with the height of the buildings and the lack of the space in the warren of tiny alleyways (“caruggi”) and narrow cobbled paths (“creuze”) leading uphill and away from the coast and with the contrasts in terms of colours: the pastel shades of the facade side with grey and black side. The authentic heart of Genoa is its ancient historical port, Porto Antico. From where, the mighty city used to exert its control over the seas, showed its bent for business and trading, started the discovery of many unexplored of lands. To commemorate the great exploit by Christopher Columbus, in 1992 the old peers and docks underwent and important renova-tion. Author of the restyling was Renzo Piano, the world renown Genovese Architect. Today, it is a centre of technological innovation with high added value service industries as well as a place attracting an ever increasing number of visitors. The city’s rich art, music, gastronomy, architecture and history, made it 2004’s EU Capital of culture.
