The cost of education shouldn’t be a barrier to future success. Choosing a career in nursing means you’ll be entering a meaningful field that has a positive outlook for job growth as well as increasing opportunities for advancement. However, it can take years of costly education to qualify as a nursing professional and figuring out how you’ll pay for school can be an overwhelming task. Erma Rosen loved and respected the nursing profession. She is the reason FCH Foundation has such a substantial nursing scholarship opportunity. Erma had dreams of becoming a nurse. However, with financial setbacks, Erma had to give up on the idea of college. Living on a farm, life was tough for her parents and siblings. Since 2009, the Erma Rosen Nursing Scholarship has helped students with financial assistance so they can achieve their dream. Congrats 2019 Erma Rosen Nursing Scholarship Recipients! • LipiFlow - helping with chronic dry eyes

RuthAnne Langford likes to sew and read, and for years she had struggled with sustaining those hobbies for long periods of time.

“I had very, very dry eyes. It made it hard to see, and it would burn,” says Langford of Blue Earth, Minnesota. “I would need breaks. I couldn’t read or sew for very long.”

Langford had been treating the symptoms of her chronic condition in a variety of ways, including warm compresses and prescription dry

eye medications. Artificial tears would help, but they constantly needed to be reapplied.

Then in the summer of 2019, Langford became one of the first patients at Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont’s Eye Clinic to receive one of the new specialized dry eye treatments, called LipiFlow. Langford said the LipiFlow treatment was “very pleasant.”

Through heat and pressure, LipiFlow improves the function of the Meibomian glands, which produce oil. During the treatment, small devices that are warm and pulsate are placed for a few minutes on the eyelids.

A couple of weeks after the treatment, Langford said she noticed a marked difference in her symptoms. “It just kept getting better and better,” Langford said. “I’m now producing the oil that mixes with the tear film.”

Langford said she now has an easier time reading and sewing for long periods, and she has significantly cut down on how often she administers artificial tear drops. She said she recommends the treatment to anyone who suffers from dry eye disease. “I’m very glad I did it,” says Langford.

Robert Friese, O.D., optometrist at Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont, estimate that about 80% of Americans will be affected by dry eyes in their lifetimes. Yet some of the dry eye technology they now use isn’t available anywhere else between Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and the Twin Cities. “We are very grateful to the Fairmont Community Hospital Foundation for purchasing the equipment,” says Friese.

The entire staff at MCHS-Fairmont is greatly appreciated and this is just one way we could show our gratitude and support the community as well.

Special thanks to Tami’s On The Ave, The Ranch Restaurant & Green Mill for making the meals and to Hy-Vee for shopping for the snacks and drinks and bringing the large order out to our car!

    Talk about a wonderful heart!

Dr. Singh presented FCH Foundation with a generous donation to help cover the cost of cooling

caps for patients going through chemo treatment at MCHS-Fairmont.

Carol was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2019. She caught it early thanks to regular mammograms and Dr. Kamlitz performed a lumpectomy a week before Christmas in Fairmont and the Monday before Christmas she was told it looked like they got it all.

At that time the Pierce family did not think that Chemotherapy would be necessary.

A short time later it was discovered that Chemo would be needed because the growth was fast in that short time and left Carol and her family in shock.

Two things that lifted Carol’s spirits was the fact she can have her Chemother-apy treatment in Fairmont and the Cooling Caps that would assist in keeping her hair and the regrowth.

The Pierce family would like to extend a grateful thank you to the foundation and it’s donors for making this possible. The last few months for them has been quite a roller-coaster and they are so thankful for the kindness of the Foundation.
