February 25th 2018 at 8:25AM I have received a call from one of our sites informing me of the fatal road accident that took the life of a dear Team Member while driving one of our crews to their work location. While the immediate priority was the family of the deceased and ensuring all religious, emotional and material aspects were covered, a parallel path of ensuring a transparent accident investigation was conducted hand in hand with our client and the authorities. While the company and its employees were found not responsible of the root cause of the accident, we all felt and acted as RESPONSIBLE. Systems, trainings, supervision and preventive measures can all protect our team members but it is that moment when a team member takes the wrong turn, deviate from his designated route out of overconfidence, complacency or distraction or any other reason that he may only know of, that fatality strikes. At EMDAD we identified Responsibilities beyond our contractual and professional obligations towards our clients, our team members and the community in which we work. We implemented a program for Vehicle Passengers Responsibilities and Duties

who in most cases can be our last line of defense in Road Safety. We enhanced our Welfare ensuring it provides additional channels of communication for our Team Members for their non-work-related grievances being of family, economical or psychological natures. We recognize that the Mental fitness to work is as important as Physical fitness. We continue working hard towards delivering our commitments while safeguarding the health and safety of our Team Members and the Environment we operate in. We can only achieve that in focusing on the Quality of our service and the Welfare of our Team Members that drives the Safety of our Operations and the Bottom Line of our business.

HSE PERFORMANCE-2018Emdad has preserved a notable HSE performance record in the previous years. However, in 2018, a fatal road accident that lead to the demise of a project driver, Mr. Qader Nawaz has altered our HSE performance.

This was the first Operation related fatal incident in Emdad, in the company’s 12 years of delivering services and producing HSE records. Gaps in the road safety management system were identified during the root cause analysis, which in turn aided in implementing stricter controls to prevent any such incidents in future.

Through this initiative we have:

• reduced 30 % of energy consumption compared to the earlier system installed in the main building.

• This has resulted in reducing the total energy consumption from 59760 W to 53976 W (Main building + Warehouse).

• Significant saving on the electricity bills.

• And significant reduction in EMDAD overall carbon footprint.

• Established an environment-friendly work complex.

This project has been a meaningful environment sustainability achievement for Emdad.

All the lights removed were disposed through Tadweer-approved environment service provider, in an environment-friendly manner.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH Emdad ensures that its employees are fit to work prior to their deployment to site and conducts regular fitness assessment from reputed hospitals. For employees who are exposed to certain occupational health hazards such as noise, dust, high temperature; special health screening tests are conducted on yearly basis. They includes Spirometry, Audiometry etc.

Apart from health screening, work sites are monitored by checking the level of hazardous items. Noise survey, Air Quality monitoring, Lighting, Temperature survey, Potable water monitoring etc. are monitored on

regular basis to ensure the work place is safe & healthy. Reports are maintained for verification. Based on the survey results, required PPEs and operational controls are provided to protect the health of the employees.

To raise the awareness, employees are sent for various health-related trainings - Respiratory Protection Training, Hearing Protection Trainings, etc., arranged by client at various sites. In-house training sessions are also conducted by the HSE team.

INITIATIVE BY EMPLOYEESFew of Emdad’s employees based in Emdad industrial complex came up with a creative initiative to spend their recess at work. The TMs were permitted by the management to utilize a small area in the backyard of Emdad office which was left empty to start their mini farm. The initiative that began with 2 types of plants now has become a mini farm that produces a variety of vegetables & herbs.

Our employees consider this activity as a stress-reliever & wise utilization of break time.

Also, this paved the way to one of the TMs, Ms.Joni to quit smoking during the break time.

ADNOC MARATHONEMDAD’s team members participated in ADNOC marathon. The ADNOC Abu Dhabi Marathon was staged for the first time in AbuDhabi.

HR department of Emdad took the lead and made all required arrangements for Emdad TMs to participate in the big event. Around 40 team members participated in various categories - 10km, 5km, 2.5km.

ROAD SAFETYEmdad lost one of its drivers - Mr. Qader Nawas in a vehicle accident on 25th Feb 2018. This sorrowful incident proved that driving is one of the most critical hazards in our operations. This unfortunate incident was the first of its kind in the history of EMDAD’s operations; where an average of 1.5 million km are driven every year. Three other passengers involved in the accident survived with minor injuries, only because they wore seat belts (The driver also wore the seat belt, however, the fatality resulted due to the impact of collision.) All emergency response activities as per the procedure were initiated at site with the support of the client. Although ill-fated, this incident was then communicated to team members of EMDAD group by the CEO. Safety stand-down was also conducted at all EMDAD’s work sites and offices on the day of the incident to cascade the message to all employees.

This incident showed the in-house gaps in road safety management system and paved way to add more focus more on journey-planning & passengers’

responsibilities as part of road safety. Emdad’s HSE policy was subsequently revised to include the responsibility of passengers while travelling in vehicles. Passengers are encouraged to report road safety related observations, drivers’ behavior as and when they observe any unsafe practice. Various sessions were conducted to raise awareness among TMs.

In 2018 after the incident, Emdad’s work force has driven 936293 Kms (March – December 2018).

Activities ensured regularly at all EMDAD work sites include the following:

• Regular road safety meetings with drivers.

• Yearly medical checkup for all professional drivers.

• Drivers evaluation though behavioural audit.

• All EMDAD vehicles deployed on site are equipped with online IVMS system.

• Driver’s performance is monitored on monthly basis through RAG reports.

While conforming to its established palette of red and green, the improved identity features a stronger brandmark and wordmark in a simple, yet unique composition.

The brandmark kept its link to the chemical structure, while its bi-directional split embodies our Upstream and Downstream sectorial coverage; all integrated in a graphic adaptation of the E in:

• Emdad: Our family

• Energy: Our Industry

• Electrons: Our thirst for partnerships and self-charged status

• Emirates: Our Home

The wordmark, in bold yet fluid style, complements the singular icon under which all EMDAD-managed subsidiaries’ brands are aligned.

CONCLUSION2018 was a year with mixed results, with achievements and misfortunes in HSEMS. Emdad has taken lessons from both the elements (achievements and misfortunes) positively, in-order to enhance its HSE standards and performance in all areas of the Company’s operations. HSE performance dashboard presented in this report is a testament to Emdad’s 100 % transparency & ZERO tolerance in HSE which is helping us to take preventive and corrective action when and where necessary and to ensure that continual improvement is taking place with every bit of experience gained.

100% HSE & employee welfare remains the primary goal to EMDAD & its group. Compliance to National, international & clients’ HSE rules and regulations at all times, support and guidance from our respected clients and managements’ enthusiastic and visible

leadership & guidance in promoting HSE are the key factors which helped Emdad & its group to continually improve its HSEMS.

I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to all who have supported EMDAD & its group for implementing & enhancing its HSEMS through guidance, contribution & participation.
