Dayton Right to Life has had an outstanding year. We have actively engaged in our mission of protecting life with a vibrant new structure, with finely-tuned enthusiasm, and with increased energy. Yes, you have made it possible! We have chosen to continue speaking that “voice for the voiceless”, we have not stood idly by, but made an impact, made a difference. Whether it’s the mobile baby pantry reaching into the community, the podcast series with post-abortive women

called “Voices”, or a “Pro-Life Moment” on internet radio, or growing significantly the number of baby pantry families served or bringing back a speaker’s series to increase community awareness, we have made a tremendous difference! Yes, you have made it possible! We have spoken, we have embraced new venues of communication, we have communicated through social media and have increased the number of prayerful rallies in Kettering (Women’s Medical Center) and in Dayton (Planned Parenthood). We have begun the implementation of our five year strategic plan and we have focused on

our mission of protecting life. We have zeroed in on life, from conception to natural death. We have embraced the truth. Yes, you have made it possible. Timing is critical. Now, when division over the issue of life is more visible and more vocal than ever in our communities and on a national level, we stand committed to protecting life through law, education and community action. Now is the time. It takes more than identifying ourselves as pro-life. It takes action. Together, we defend LIFE. It begins with you and me. Yes, you make it possible!Thank you and God bless.Paul Coudron

Thank you to our volunteers! In 2016, Dayton Right to Life benefited from over 3,780 volunteer hours, valued at approximately $89,056!* Over 100 volunteers gave so generously of their time and resources. Dayton Right to Life cannot thank these individuals enough for their genuine commitment to the pro-life movement in the Miami Valley! This year we specifically recognize two men who have been committed to the pro-life movement for years, Mike Haynes and Vaughn Johnson.

Mike HaynesSince 1981, Dayton Right to Life has honored some of our most outstanding volunteers with the Melissa Schrader Award. The 2016 winner was past board chair and volunteer, Mike Haynes. He has been a faithful pro-life volunteer in Dayton for over 20 years, especially in the Black community. He has worked tirelessly, and has witnessed for

our cause in front of abortion mills and Planned Parenthood locations across the country.Vaughn JohnsonAnother long-time volunteer recieved a state honor this year. Vaughn Johnson was one of the 5 finalists nominated in the Ohio Association of Non-Profits (OANO) Outstanding Volunteer of the year award. Vaughn has been a steadfast supporter of Dayton Right to Life since 1997. He has anchored our organization through changes in location, personnel, and cultural changes. As Margie Christie noted in his nomination letter, “He understands our mission, can articulate it to others, and then lives it out through his actions. Dayton Right to Life has truly been blessed by the gifts of time and treasure of Mr. Vaughn Johnson over these past two decades.”

Together, our two organizations reflect our dual mission of action and advocacy to protect the rights of the unborn, the elderly, the mentally handicapped, the disabled and the terminally ill. We believe that the unborn child is uniquely human from the moment of conception and therefore, has an unalienable right to life which should be legally protected. We believe that the mother and family who find themselves in an unplanned or crisis pregnancy deserve options that enable them to choose life.

Ohio Induced Abortion ReportIn September of 2016, The Ohio Department of Health released its annual Abortion Report for Ohio. It reports statistics for 2015. According to this report, the number of abortions in Ohio fell 1% as compared to 2014. There were 20,976 induced abortions reported in Ohio, including 19,765 obtained by Ohio residents.Locally, in Montgomery County, we unfortunately continued a 2-year trend of increased abortions performed. Abortion occurrences in Montgomery County increased by 40%, rising from 1,855 in 2014 to 2,599 in 2015. This is an increase of 44% since 2013. Because of these increases, Montgomery County has increased its market share of all abortions in the state from 8% to 12%. It is important to note however, resident

rates showed only a small increase in the county at a rate of 2% over 2014, telling us that women from across the state are coming to our county for abortions. Again, as has been the trend for years, African American women, which make up approx 12% of the population in Montgomery county, have a grossly disproportionate amount of the abortions performed. The 2015 numbers report that African American women in Montgomery county have 49% of all abortions performed, up from 46% in 2014. We have begun to target these high abortion zip codes with educational campaigns and other programs. These initiatives will hopefully lead to decreases in the years to come.

2016 Legislative UpdateElection 2016 was one of the major focal points for Dayton Right to Life Society. Direct mail pieces were sent to over 400 individuals and churches during the election season. Flyers, billboards, direct emails, and radio messages were also utilized to encourage voters to “VOTE PRO-LIFE!”

We are very hopeful that many of the pro-life candidates who were elected will follow through on campaign promises. Locally, we continue to maintain contact with all our elected officials on all pro-life and pro-family issues.

Statewide legislation was not as vigorous as in the past years, due to the election and reduced session times for legislators. Several pieces of legislation worth noting are as follows:

Pain Capable Legislation, which prohibits abortions after 20 weeks (SB 127) passed Ohio legislature, and was signed by Gov. Kasich in December 2016. (Note: Affects approx 1% of Ohio abortions)

Heartbeat Protection Amendment in HB 493, passed in the legislature in December 2016. Governor Kasich used his line-item veto power and struck it from the final law in December 2016. (Note: Amendment would have prohibited over 80% of abortions in Ohio)

House Bill 470, passed in December 2016 as well, makes knowingly assisting in a suicide a third-degree felony in Ohio, punishable by up to five years in prison. This was signed into law by Governor Kasich in late December.

Breakthrough? On December 1, 2016, the Ohio Department of Health revoked the license of Women’s Med Center, owned and operated by notorious late term abortionist, Martin Haskell. The ODH’s decision was appealed immediately and their request to stay open during this appeal process was granted

on December 12, 2016 by Judge Mary Wiseman of the Montgomery County Common Pleas Court. As of this printing, Judge Wiseman has not ruled on Women’s Med Center’s appeal.

2016: A Success!2016 was a big year for Dayton Right to Life! From the new “Pro-Life Speaker Series” events, to the bike rides, to the renaming of our main event, our 2016 events were a success!

Pro-Life Speaker SeriesThe Speaker Series had Henry Flowers as the first guest speaker. Flowers is the Director of Urban Outreach for Life Issues Institute’s Protecting Black Life initiative in Cincinnati. He shared his story on being pro-life and spoke on the crucial role that men and fathers have in the pro-life movement.

Angela Minter was the next speaker in our Speaker Series. From Louisville Kentucky, Minter is the Executive Director of Sisters for Life. Her moving story of her personal experience with abortion inspired everyone in attendance to more fervently advocate for children, women, and families.

Rides for LifeThe T.K. Hausfeld Ride for Life and Festival was held at Austin Landing, a new venue for this event. It was a fun and hot day of biking, festival games, and lots of sunshine! The silent auction of fun items from local businesses and retailers was a big hit!The UD2ND Ride for Life was held for it’s 4th installment. The riders took the original route from the University of Dayton, to Minster, Decatur,

Winona Lake, and ending at the University of Notre Dame. This 240 mile bike ride is a wonderful way for the riders to display their support of life as they travel the roads through the rural countryside.

Jennifer Rose Schaffer Pro-Life EveningThe signature event, formerly titled “Viva la Vita,” was renamed The Jennifer Rose Schaffer Pro-Life Evening, in honor of board member Jennifer Schaffer who passed away in April 2016. The evening was held at the Sinclair Conference Center. Mike and Fran DeWine were awarded the Defender of Life Award for their many years of support for life. Comedian Gordon Douglas was the emcee and shared his comedic humor with the audience throughout the night. Dr. Marc Newman, President of San Diego-based Speaker for Life (a pro-life speaker training firm), was the keynote speaker. Dr. Newman motivated the audience to stand up and get involved with defending our unborn neighbors. In his address, Dr. Newman spoke about the role of men in the abortion debate. Men have historically been told that it is not their concern, but he encouraged them to fight for their women and children. He also spoke about the history of Planned Parenthood, and how in their early years they pushed birth control among those in society they considered unfit, and that today, they are pushing abortion, again among minorities, but under the auspices of “women’s healthcare.” Those in attendance of the event walked away with a renewed sense of focus and urgency in the fight for life.
