Re: Fourth Annual Campaign to End Homelessness

Dear Friends:

I am writing to urge you to join me in supporting the Fourth Annual Campaign to End

Homelessness, benefitting the Homeless Persons Representation Project (HPRP).

Homelessness is continuing to increase in Maryland. In Baltimore City alone, homelessness

increased 19.6% between 2009 and 2011. The number of homeless children and youth has also

increased and in 2011, 640 youth unaccompanied by a parent or guardian were identified.

Over twenty years ago, I was inspired by Stan Herr to get involved and I quickly recognized tha

lawyers could make a difference in ending homelessness. I believe that even more today.

HPRP is a non- profit free legal services provider harnessing our community’s legal talent to end

homelessness. With a volunteer corps of over 450 volunteer lawyers, paralegals, and law studeand HPRP’s able Staff, HPRP targets the legal reasons that people cannot obtain or maintain sta

housing. The organization handles over 700 individual cases to help its clients obtain or mainta

public benefits, including veterans’ benefits, shelter and housing, eliminate barriers to

employment, and access other critical resources to stabilize their lives. HPRP’s individual case

work informs advocacy to address systemic causes of homelessness.

The program is effective. In HPRP’s project designed to eliminate barriers to employment, 95%

of eligible clients have a positive legal outcome. Within 6 months, almost 50% obtain

employment even in this poor economy. HPRP recovers substantial back public benefit awards

clients each year, returning critical resources to its clients to enable them to pay for housing and

other resources.

In its housing practice, HPRP keeps people like Mr. H in their homes. Mr. H is 58 years old an

dying of kidney failure. When he approached HPRP, his only caretaker had passed away and h

was facing the loss of his federal housing subsidy for allegedly allowing her to live with him.

Homelessness would have meant certain death for Mr. H. HPRP successfully represented Mr. H

and he remains in his home today, having been given the opportunity to live out his remaining

days with dignity.

I have already made my contribution, as has my firm. Please join us in supporting this importan

organization through the Fourth Annual Campaign to End Homelessness.

Please contribute as much as you can and consider using the enclosed donation form to send in

your contribution or donate online at www.hprplaw.org. HPRP will publicly thank donors thro

publication in The Daily Record throughout the Campaign.

Your contribution will make an enormous d ifference for people, like Mr. H, who need HPRP’s

services to obtain and maintain one of our most basic human needs  – a home.

Sincerely,

Sanford V. Teplitzky, Esq.
