PAGE 6 JAZZ RAMBLER

As a long-time San Diego AdultJazz Camp attendee/student, I, JayRice, was asked to write a few wordsabout my adult jazz camp experiencesover the years for the AFCDJS. Thisrequest got me to thinking about allthat has transpired throughout thetime since the very first camp wasorganized by George Harbaugh, AlAdams, Hal Smith, Mary Solsback andothers in 1996.

AFCDJS’s first venture was theonly camp that I did not attend as Iwas gainful ly employed by theCal i forn ia Highway Pa t ro l andcouldn’t get the necessary time off.As an aspiring cornet player, I didhave the opportunity to speak withBob Schulz, the cornet instructor, atthe 1996 AFCDJS Thanksgiving JazzFestival. I asked him what the minimumcriteria for a student cornet playermight be in order to successfullycomplete the camp. Bob told me that,in his opinion, one must primarily havea good tone and; secondarily, be ableto play a strong lead for the othermembers of the combo to follow. Idecided that I could meet those demandsand signed up for the 1997 camp.

I really had no idea what to expectat the camp and figured I wouldprobably be the worst “wannabemusician” in the class. Because of mylaw enforcement career, I had taken a37-year “lay-off” from playing musicand was uncertain of my enduranceand abilities to perform. Playing musicfor pay was generally considered an“ incons i s ten t and incompat ib leactivity” by the department becauseof the atmosphere and environmentwhere such mus ic might beperformed... taverns, bars, cabarets, clubs, etc. where liquor would beserved.

Before the long lay-off, my previousmusical experience included playingtrumpet in junior high school, highschool and four years in the FirstMarine Division Band at CampPendleton, Ca.

As a “comeback” player and“newbie” at the camp, I was cautiouslylurking, watching and listening to what

was being played, who was playing it,and how it was being played. Beforelong, I realized that I was pretty muchin the same league... about average(talent-wise) with the other players. Igathered some confidence, jumped inand persevered until I got over the continued on page 10

jitters.I realized that we students were all

pretty much of the same frame of mindand we sett led down to seriousbusiness after the first few hours. Wewent from bleating/quivering —quaking/blatting noises to recog-nizable musical notes & tones. By thesecond day, things had musicallyimproved and the classes as a wholebegan to make significant progress.

Each year since 1997, I have

witnessed the same scenario play outwith each of the new campers. I amcontinually amazed as the confidencelevel increases and the performanceoutput improves with each passinghour. I am further amazed at how theinstructors are able to maintain“straight” faces when giving adviceand counsel to the flock of fledglingand nervous “wannabes!”

My motives for returning each yearare not only to learn from newins t ruc tors and s tudy d i f fe ren t

theories, but to reunite also with mydozens of faithful old camper friends(instructors, too!) in the highlyrewarding after-hours “jam” sessions. There is no greater comfort than takingpleasure in making music after a hardday of camp with old friends who havetravelled great distances, sometimesat great expense.

I suspect this is not unlike what thebig band chart-playing professionalmusicians did in the ’20s, ’30s and’40s after playing four or five hours ofthe same repetitive popular music inthe ballrooms of America. When theyfinished with the big band gigs, theywent to “after-hours joints” and playedmusic in a di f ferent s ty le wi thins t rumental is ts they wanted tointeract with musically.

We s tudents s t r ive to l ea rn ,discuss and perfect our musicalpresentations while we dine, drink and“jam” together after class hours. Wenot only learn from the demonstrationsof the instructors, but we pick up muchknowledge f rom those s tudentmusicians interacting with us. We notonly learn what to do from theinstructors, we also learn what not todo from the other students throughoutthe course of instruction.

The Adult Jazz Camp format hasnecessarily evolved and refined itselfto the benefit of the campers over theyears. Changes have been noted inthe instructors, the students, the typesof ins t ruments and the mus icselections chosen for study. What hasnot changed over the years are thestrong bonds of camaraderie formedamong (and between) the returningmusicians and instructors. We havecome together from as far away as

Music in San Diego City Schools isin great danger because of a recentflood of layoff notices to musicinstructors at every level throughoutSan Diego City Schools. For many years, music has beeniden t i f i ed as par t o f the corecurriculum. This is an edict from theState Department of Education. It’sobvious that the State of California isnot living up to its own standards bya l lowing these cu t s to t akep lace . Amer ica’s F ines t Ci tyDixieland Jazz Society supports musiceduca t ion a t every leve l f romelementary to the many adult programsin Greater San Diego.

The district’s visual and per-forming arts curriculum faces a $2.8million cut from its $3 million budgetthis year as officials try to fill the holein the district’s operating budget.

In addition to many secondaryposi t ions , 40 e lementary musicpositions are slated for termination.

If trustees sign off on the budgetproposal, it will mean the end of allelementary music education except forthe program at Crown Point Junior

Additional Options toHelp Keep Jazz Alive

The director of the Mission Bay High School music program, JP Balmat, hasbeen reinstated. However, other outstanding programs are still in jeopardy.

Cancellations at Fest #32Cancellations at Fest #32Cancellations at Fest #32Cancellations at Fest #32Cancellations at Fest #32 Due to extenuating circumstances, itwas necessary for AFCDJS to cancelthe appearances by the Jim Cullum JazzBand and the Black Swan Classic JazzBand at this year’s Festival. This difficultdecision was made after the Jazz Societywas notified that funding from a majorsponsor would not be available in 2012. AFCDJS regrets the necessity ofcutting these two outstanding bandsfrom the lineup, but we hope that theymay perform at our jazz Festival in thefuture.

Jazz Roots is hosted by LouCurtiss, proprietor of Folk Arts RareRecords and founder of the SanDiego Folk Festival and the AdamsAvenue Roots Festival.

Music Academy, which does not relyon visual and performing arts funding.

Under the proposed budget, 10 artteaching jobs would be cut and morethan 45 music teachers — some ofwhom are part-time — wouldn’t returnnext year to the district’s nationally-recognized music education program.

“Cut t ing e lementary mus iceducation could also have the same“trickle-up” effect it did in the ’80s,when the music programs at severalhigh schools dried up because therewere no students feeding into them,”said Ann Marie Haney, co-chair ofSan Diego’s Community Council forMusic in the Schools. “It’s likeanything that has to grow,” Haneysaid. “If you don’t plant seeds in theground and you cut off the roots, you’re not going to have a survivingplant.”

AFCDJS members in the City of SDSchool District need to contact theBoard of Education and emphasizethe need to continue our musicprograms. Share your concerns withRichard Barrera, the Board [email protected].

Continued from page 10Camper . . .Switzerland (and all corners of theUSA) to study trad jazz music stylestaught by the finest instructors.

Part of the beauty of the jazz campis that there are activities planned forthe spouses and “significant others”who accompany the performingstudents. Activities include outingsto many of the local attractions for the“Tag-a-longs.” My wife, Carole, hasenjoyed visits to the Coronado Hotel,Old Town San Diego, Balboa Parkexhibits & museums, Scripps Institutein La Jolla, the Gaslamp District,Seaport Village, a casino, floralgardens, shopping malls, theaters, dining, etc. This is a full-service campfor the performer and the partner as well.

In between the annual Adult TradJazz Camps, I have tried to takeadvantage of the monthly AFCDJSsponsored Trad Jazz workshopsoffered at the San Diego Musician’sUnion Local on the second Thursdayof each month . I t a f fords anopportunity to work with musicians ofall ages and abilities. It is especiallyrewarding as there are many local highschool students who freely participatein this vintage music program.

I have attended all Adult Trad JazzCamps, the Adult Swing Camp, theAdult Intermediate Trad Jazz Campand the Adult Trad Jazz Camp II since1997 — 17 in all. AFCDJS justcompleted the 2011 Adult Trad JazzCamp which was the 18th consecutivecamp offered by the AFCDJS. I havealready made room reservations forthe 2012 camp at the Lafayette Hoteland I’m looking forward to savoringa l l o f the wonder fu l recur r ingexperiences previously described forthe 19th time.

I encourage all musicians whoappreciate and enjoy the trad style ofmusic to sign up for the next camp andget busy with your instrument. You’vegot a year to prepare and get up tospeed. I assure you that you will bemade to feel welcome and you will bepersonally rewarded for your effortsand by the musical exposure andexperience. Take that first step — getyour horn out, sign up, come on downand sit in — you’ll never forget it andfor sure you won’t be sorry. I’ll seethere!

Joseph “King” Oliver was oncebilled as the “world’s greatest jazzcornetist.” He was also a leader ofwhat many termed the world’s greatestjazz band — the Creole Jazz Band. Hewas called the New Orleans marchking — the first man to improvisemarch tempos in jazz. He was acomposer and an innovator whosemuted corne t s ty l ings se t thestandards for future jazz trumpeters. So it was natural for him to assume the“crown” after “Kings” Buddy Boldenand Freddie Keppard.

Joe Oliver was born in 1885 on aplantation up the river from NewOrleans where his mother was a cook.Although in early childhood anaccident left him sightless in one eye,he began to study the trombone withthe leader of a children’s brass bandin New Orleans.

Later, switching to the cornet, heeventually became skillful enough toplay in regular brass and dance bands,in parades, funerals and picnics. From1908 to 1917 he played, at varioustimes, with the Olympia, Melrose,Eagle, Onward and Magnolia bands incompany with such jazz luminaries asHonoré Dutry, Frankie Dusen, LorenzoTio, Sr., George Baquet, Sidney

Bechet, Kid Ory, “Big Eye” LouisNelson and Johnny St. Cyr.

Storyville ClosedAfter the closure of Storyville in

1917, he migrated to Chicago to joinBill Johnson’s band at the RoyalGardens Café. After a time, he doubledwith another group at the DreamlandCafé, led by Lawrence Duhé and in1919 he took over the Duhé bandrenaming it the Creole Jazz Band.

In 1922, Oliver sent for his youngprotégé in New Orleans, LouisArmstrong, and with the two-cornetlead, the band was considered thefinest jazz band of its day. Thefollowing year it became the firstNegro band playing the New Orleansstyle to record. His 37 sides withGennet t , Columbia , Okey andParamount are among the mostcelebrated recordings in jazz history.

In 1924, the band began to breakup after constant touring. Johnny

and Baby Dodds left, then HonoréDutry and finally Lil Hardin and LouisArmstrong.

Oliver asked Luis Russell to reformthe band and in the meantime took atemporary job with Dave Peyton atthe Plantation Club in Chicago.Gradually he brought the New Orleansplayers into the group — AlbertNicholas, Barney Bigard and TommyLadnier — and the band becameknown as the Dixie Syncopators.Oliver’s style was changing and hisband began evolving into a big band, though using the Creole Band’scharts. The Syncopators made manyrecordings but their style was unevenand Oliver’s star began to fade.

When the Plantation Club closed in1927, the band played engagements inMilwaukee, Detroit and St. Louis andeventually came to New York but wastoo late. Other bands playing his stylepreceded him and he never achieved thepopularity he enjoyed in Chicago.

Continues to RecordHe continued to appear on records

into the ’30s but the bands billed asOliver’s were actually others — ElmerSnowden or Luis Russell.

For a few years, Oliver, sufferingfrom serious dental troubles, beganto assign trumpet solos to othermusicians. Finally after a series ofcatastrophic Southern tours , hestopped playing and destitute, hesettled in Savannah where he foundwork in a pool hall. He died inSavannah of a cerebral hemorrhage in1938, a broken man and alone — a sadfate for the man who was, at one time, the “King” of New Orleans jazz.
