ORDER OF WORSHIP

September 9, 2018 10:00 A.M.

Bold indicates congregational participation *Indicates congregation standing, as you are able.

WELCOMING

GATHERING MUSIC “Partita on Dunlap’s Creek” – David Lasky

WELCOME MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS PRELUDE “Diapason Melody” – David Terry

LIGHTING OF THE CHRIST CANDLE Tom Schoffelman *CALL TO WORSHIP………………………………………..Tom Schoffelman Our merciful God, maker of us all, pleads the cause of the poor and afflicted. Open our hearts, O God, to demonstrate your grace through Jesus our Lord. Let us worship God! *PRAYER OF THE DAY……………………………………..Tom Schoffelman Good and generous God, you have blessed us with favor and counted us as your people through our glorious Lord Jesus Christ. Freed by your grace, let us extend your generosity to others, sharing our bread with the poor, pleading the cause of the afflicted, and receiving all who assemble in your name with the warmth of your love and the richness of your hospitality; in the good name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. *HYMN #817……..……………………"We Walk by Faith and Not by Sight"

CALL TO CONFESSION………………………………………Tom Schoffelman PRAYER OF CONFESSION (unison) ………….…………...Tom Schoffelman God of favor, we have not been true to you. You have chosen the poor in the world, but we have dishonored them. You plead the cause of the afflicted, but we crush them. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We have favored the rich and despised the poor. We have dismissed the needy with empty words. Soften our hearts and make straight our ways. Heal our unbelief and turn us back to you. Amen. SILENT PRAYER OF CONFESSION WORDS OF ASSURANCE *RESPONSE IN SONG #71, refrain only Surely, it is God who saves me; I will trust and not be afraid. For the Lord is my strong-hold and my sure defense, and God will be my Savior. *THE PEACE Jesus said: “As the Lord has forgiven us, let us also forgive one another.” The peace of the Lord Jesus be with you. And also with you. We exchange signs of peace. (Children leave for Sunday School)

NOURISHING

CHANCEL CHOIR “I Will Give Jubilant Thanks” Paul Williams / Michael Barrett PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION (unison)………………………Tom Schoffelman Healing God, you do all things well. Illumine our hearts by your Holy Spirit, that we may receive your words and demonstrate your grace. Amen. PSALM 125: A RESPONSORIAL SETTING Refrain Verses 1-2 Refrain Verses 3-5 Refrain OLD TESTAMENT……………………………..Proverbs 22:1-2, 8-9, 22-23 (pg. 604) EPISTLE…………………………………………………….James 2:1-17 (responsive) My brothers and sisters, do you with your acts of favoritism really believe in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ? For if a person with gold rings and in fine clothes comes into your assembly, and if a poor person in dirty clothes also comes in, and if you take notice of the one wearing the fine clothes and say, “Have a seat here, please,” while to the one who is poor you say, “Stand there,” or “Sit at my feet,” have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my beloved brothers and sisters. Has not God chosen the poor in the world to be rich in faith and to be heirs of the kingdom that he has promised to those who love him? But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who oppress you? Is it not they who drag you into court? Is it not they who blaspheme the excellent name that was invoked over you? You do well if you really fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” But if you show partiality, you commit sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it. For the one who said, “You shall not commit adultery,” also said, “You shall not commit murder.” Now if you do not commit adultery but if you murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. So speak and so act as those who are to be judged by the law of liberty. For judgment will be without mercy to anyone who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment. What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill,” and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
