ANNOUNCEMENTS JEANNE SPURLOCK FELLOWSHIPS FOR MINORITY MEDICAL STUDENTS. These fellowships, supported by CMHS and NIDA, provide $2,500 for 12 weeks of summer work under a child and adolescent psychiatrist mentor. Recipients of the fellowships will also have their expenses paid to attend 5 days at the 2005 AACAP Annual Meeting where they will present their research. The availability of these awards is contingent on the receipt of adequate funding. PILOT RESEARCH AWARDS. These awards, funded through Eli Lilly and Company, are designed to provide support to child and adolescent psychiatry junior faculty, residents or fellows for pilot research. Recipients of these awards receive $9,000 each to conduct their pilot research, plus paid travel and lodging expenses to the Academy’s 53rd Annual Meeting in San Diego, California, October 24–29, 2006. Applicants must have either a faculty appointment at an accredited medical school, or be in a fully accredited child and adolescent psychiatry clinical or research program, have not more than 2 years’ experience following graduation from residency/fellowship training, and not have any previous significant, individual research funding in the field of child and adolescent mental health. The award pays expenses up to $2,500 for travel and lodging for 1 week’s tutorial with a senior child and adolescent psychiatrist Academy leader and participation in the Academy’s 2005 Annual Meeting, October 18–23, 2005, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Each winner agrees to make a formal presentation to the other residents in his or her program about the Annual Meeting and tutorial experience. Application deadline is March 15, 2005. The lecture and award was created in honor of Jeanne Spurlock, M.D., a legendary advocate for children and adolescents and their families from all cultures. Nominations must come from AACAP members. The award includes an invitation to present a lecture at the AACAP Annual Meeting, an honorarium of $2,500, and a plaque. Nominations are due by May 1. JEANNE SPURLOCK, M.D. CONGRESSIONAL FELLOWSHIP. The American Psychiatric Association and Ameri-can Psychiatric Foundation in collaboration with the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry invitenominations for the Jeanne Spurlock Congressional Fellowship. The Jeanne Spurlock Congressional Fellowshipprovides general psychiatry and child psychiatry residents an opportunity to work in a congressional office orcommittee, on federal health policy, particularly policy related to child and minority issues. This fellowship wasestablished in honor of the late Jeanne Spurlock, M.D., who was Deputy Medical Director of APA’s Office ofMinority/National Affairs and an advocate for child and minority issues. The recipient will serve a 6-month fellowshipstarting January 1 and ending June 30. The fellow will be introduced to the structure and development of federal andcongressional health policy, with a focus on mental health issues affecting children and minorities. Fellows tradi-tionally help develop legislative proposals, track and analyze legislative initiatives, arrange hearings, brief Congressmenor Congresswomen and staff, and interact with constituents. SIDNEY BERMAN AWARD. This award recognizes a child and adolescent psychiatrist who has shown outstandingleadership in the public education and treatment of learning disabilities. Dr. Sidney Berman was a founding memberof the AACAP and President 1969–71. A cash prize of $4,500 is awarded and a plaque is presented at the AnnualMeeting. The nomination deadline is May 1, 2005. The award recipient must be an AACAP member by the timeof the Annual Meeting in order to receive the award. NORBERT AND CHARLOTTE RIEGER SERVICE AWARD. The Rieger Service Program Award for Excellencerecognizes innovative programs that address prevention, diagnosis, or treatment of mental illnesses in children andadolescents, and serve as model programs to the community. This award of $3,500 is shared among the awardee andhis or her service program. Nomination letters must be accompanied by a CV and any support materials for theindividual or organization nominated. The award winner will be recognized at a Distinguished Awards Luncheon andmake an Honors Presentation about his or her work during the AACAP 2005 Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.The nomination deadline is May 1, 2005. The award recipient must be an AACAP member by the time of the AnnualMeeting in order to receive the award. GEORGE TARJAN AWARD. This award recognizes a child and adolescent psychiatrist and Academy member whohas made significant contributions in a lifetime career or a single seminal work to the understanding or care of thosewith mental retardation and developmental disabilities. These contributions must have national and/or internationalstature and clearly demonstrate lasting effects. The contributions may be in the areas of teaching, research, programdevelopment, direct clinical service, advocacy, or administrative commitment. A cash prize of up to $1,000 will beawarded. George Tarjan, M.D., served as the Academy’s President from 1977–79 and was renowned for his pio-neering work in the field of mental retardation. The award recipient must be an AACAP member by the time of theAnnual Meeting in order to receive the award. The nomination deadline is May 1, 2005.
