4-H CLOVERBUDS FOR AGES 5-8 Just like the 4-H program for older youth, the pur-pose of the 4-H Cloverbuds is to help young children learn life skills to become competent, caring, and contributing citizens. Specifically, Cloverbuds are youth five to eight years old or in Kindergarten through the second grade. Cloverbuds help young people:

Learn more about themselves and the world around them

Develop positive attitudes about learning new things by hands-on involvement

Develop a relationship with a caring adult or old-er youth helper

Learn about the 4-H Youth Development pro-gram

The primary goal of the Cloverbuds program is to promote children's healthy development—mentally, physically, socially, and emotionally. The Clover-buds program provides an excellent opportunity for children to reach their highest potential because early life experiences, even subtle ones, affect fu-ture development. Contact [email protected] for additional details about upcoming club meetings. Erin Cahill is the Cloverbuds club leader and is reachable at [email protected].

*Sign up for the Cloverbuds reminder text for up-

coming meeting reminders and cancellations by tex-

ting the code @bc4hcbuds to the number 81010.

SHARPSHOOTER NEWS February will be the last month Sharpshooters will be accepting new members, because all new members must attend both mandatory safety meetings in February and March. Children must be age 9 as of January 1 and be 4-H members in order to join. Parents of new members must stay with their child at the indoor meetings. Our next meeting is on February 8 from 7:00-8:30 pm at the Exten-sion Office. A reminder to returning members: you must attend the February or March meeting and everyone must turn in all paperwork and dues by April 19 in order to be added to the 2018 roster. If you have any questions, please email us at [email protected].

KEEP CALM AND COOK ON GROUP At our January meeting, we made several different soups, including Italian, Mexican, and curry ones by adding a few more ingredients to a basic vegetable soup recipe. The group learned how to make a reci-pe of their own by adding a few ingredients. It also showed how a cook can improvise with ingredients on hand. It can be a challenge, but also fun — simi-lar to what takes place in the show Chopped Jr. The Chinese New Year is on February 16 this year, so here is an easy, interesting, and amazingly tasty recipe you could use to celebrate!

Spicy Chinese Noodles Adapted from Nancy Clark’s Sports Nutrition Guidebook

Mix: 1/3 cup peanut butter, preferably chunky 3 Tbsp. reduced sodium soy sauce 3 Tbsp. vinegar 1 Tbsp. sugar, as desired 1-2 dashes cayenne (red) pepper or white pepper, as desired

Add: 4-4½ cups cooked pasta Optional: cooked chicken, veggies, sesame seeds

WIGGLES AND WAGS DOG CLUB At our last meeting, we had a Christmas party

that included a fun story and game, and a gift exchange. Our dog visitor was Rachel Schlosser's dog, Nick. We also collected dog toys that will be donated to a local rescue. Our

next meeting is Tuesday, February 20 at 7:00 pm. Please join us!

GUINEA PIG CLUB At our last meeting, we learned about basic guinea pig anatomy and made hideouts for our guinea pigs. Our next meeting will be Tuesday, February 6 at 6:00 pm. We will be learning more about the proper care for guinea pigs. We are also having a Valentine's gift and card exchange for the guinea pigs. New members are always welcome! For questions or more information, please contact Ben or Christie at [email protected].

AEROSPACE CLUB Our next meeting will be on Thursday, February 1 on the upper level of the Enrichment Center from 6:30-8:00 pm. We will be having a special guest speaker, a retired Air Force pilot-turned- commercial pilot for Delta Airlines. We will also be going over the Young Eagles program that gives our

club free sightseeing airplane rides each summer as well. Flight simulators and microdrones will also be available for use. We welcome new members any time of the year. We also want to thank Laura Barfield from CVG Airport for sharing

lots of interesting information about CVG for our January meeting. We will be continuing our three-part series of ham radio technicians license exam study sessions on February 15 in the Lutes Room at the Extension Office, from 6:30-8:00 pm. You do not have to be an Aerospace Club member to attend the ham radio study session. We will start our three-part series on rocketry beginning on our Thursday, March 1 meeting. We will be building lots of model rockets, thanks to the National Association of Rocketry whom we received a grant from last summer. For questions or more information, contact us at [email protected].

EXTREME ENTOMOLOGY

Due to snow and sickness, our first club meeting will now be Tuesday, February 6 at 6:30-8:00 pm at the Extension Office. We will be doing some hands-on learning about alien and invasive insects! There will also be a guest speaker to add to the fun! Join our Club Remind for updates and reminders by texting the code @bc4hbugs to the number 81010. Please contact Fran Martin by [email protected] for questions or more information.

ELECTRONICS CLUB Due to inclement weather, our club was not able to meet on January 16. However, we will be welcoming guest speaker Dr. Gang Sun from Northern Kentucky University on February 20! Dr. Sun, a professor from the NKU electronics engineering department, will be talking about what you need to do in order to further an engineering career, as well as many other related topics. Come listen from 6:30-8:00 pm at the Extension Office! You do not have to be a club member to participate. Refreshments will be provided. Also, we are trying to update our member emails. Please send us an email to [email protected] with your correct contact information. New members ages 12-18 are always welcome to join us!

RABBIT CLUB Our next club meeting will be meeting on Tuesday, February 13 from 6:30-8:00 pm. We will be dis-cussing common diseases and parasites of rabbits and their treatments. We will also be putting togeth-er some health/emergency kits to take home. We hope to see you there!

PAWS AND CLAWS CAT CLUB At our December meeting, our club welcomed Brenda Wilson from Friends of Grant County Animal Shelter, who gave a very informative presentation about the work that they do to help

cats and dogs at their shelter. We had a cat gift exchange game with a left/right story written by Holly Steimer. At our January 10 meeting, we made project boards to help advertise our service projects, and we

talked about our New Year’s resolutions to better care for our cats. Cat blankets and checks were sent to OAR and Friends of Boone County and Grant County Animal Shelters. For our February 14 meeting, members will bring Valentine-themed snacks and Valentines to share, if they wish. We will also work on cat Valentine scrapbook pages. The Boone County Animal Shelter will sponsor orphan kitten bottle feeding training from 1:30-3:30 pm on Saturday, February 24. This will be held at the Boone County Extension Office. Those interested will learn from Nancy Hancock, the Founder of Little Orphan Kittens Rescue (LOKR). She will be coming from Louisville to share her valuable experience and knowledge. For more information or questions, please contact Joan at [email protected].

BREYER HORSE CLUB Hello all! We had a great time at our last meeting. We talked about how colors affect our model horses, and did two activities. The first one was we guessed the colors of some of our models. If you got it right, you got a prize! Then, we colored our favorite color of horse on a Breyer coloring page. This activity prepared us for our next meeting, which will be about assigning real horse breeds to our model horses! We will meet on Wednesday, February 7 from 5:00-6:00 pm. It will be very important, so please try to attend! We hope to see you there! Please contact Krista Bowman at 859-384-0603 if you have any questions.

In Victorian times, it was considered bad luck to sign a Valentine’s Day card.

141 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged annually, making this day the

second most popular card-giving occasion. Instead of Valentine’s Day, Finland celebrates

Ystävänpäivä, which translates into “Friend’s Day.” It’s more about remembering your buddies than loved ones.

Many believe that the ‘X’ symbol in XOXO became synonymous with the kiss in medieval times. People who couldn't write their names signed in front of a witness with an ‘X’.

In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who would be their Valentine. They would wear this name pinned onto their sleeves for one week for everyone to see. This was the origin of the expression “to wear your heart on your sleeve.”
