CLINICAL NUTRITION (1986) 5: 213 Correspondence Section Sir, Since March 1985, Geistlich have been investigating the source of chromium in Aminoplex 12” and GluCoplex”. The concentrations varied to such an extent that we reached the same conclusion as Dr Shenkin, and colleagues (Clinical Nutrition vol. 5, 91-97, 1986) viz that ‘it is probable chromium is being supplied in most of the patients as contaminants’. Studies on both chromium and aluminium showed that their concentrations increased with the age of the solution, and further analysis of closures and glass sug- gested that the stopper was the most likely source of both metals. A new stopper was introduced in December 1985 and at monthly intervals since then we have analysed solu- tions from the same batch manufactured in December. Bottles fitted with the old stopper had an initial chro- mium concentration of 96 nmol/l, and by May this had increased to 172.8nmol,‘l. Bottles fitted with the new stopper had an initial chromium concentration of 76.8 nmol? and the concentration in May remained at exactly the same level. We would agree with Dr Shenkin that manufacturers should provide information on the chromium content of their products. Until we have completed monthly analyses for the full shelf life of our solutions it would be unwise to publish them; however, we are prepared to provide figures from the latest analysis for any clinician who requests them. We are confident that such infor- mation will support our initial data indicating that we have eliminated the major source of chromium con- tamination in our solutions. P. J. Correspondence Section

Sir, Since March 1985, Geistlich have been investigating the source of chromium in Aminoplex 12” and GluCoplex”. The concentrations varied to such an

extent that we reached the same conclusion as Dr Shenkin, and colleagues (Clinical Nutrition vol. 5,

91-97, 1986) viz that ‘it is probable chromium is being

supplied in most of the patients as contaminants’. Studies on both chromium and aluminium showed

that their concentrations increased with the age of the solution, and further analysis of closures and glass sug- gested that the stopper was the most likely source of

both metals. A new stopper was introduced in December 1985 and

at monthly intervals since then we have analysed solu-

tions from the same batch manufactured in December. Bottles fitted with the old stopper had an initial chro-

mium concentration of 96 nmol/l, and by May this had increased to 172.8nmol,‘l. Bottles fitted with the new

stopper had an initial chromium concentration of 76.8 nmol? and the concentration in May remained at exactly the same level.

We would agree with Dr Shenkin that manufacturers should provide information on the chromium content

of their products. Until we have completed monthly analyses for the full shelf life of our solutions it would be unwise to publish them; however, we are prepared to provide figures from the latest analysis for any clinician

who requests them. We are confident that such infor-

mation will support our initial data indicating that we

have eliminated the major source of chromium con-

tamination in our solutions. P. J. BRYANT Geistlich Sons Ltd Newton Bank

This letter was sent to Dr Shenkin and his colleagues

who felt that no reply was necessary.
