Chen, P. W. (2010, November 18). Nurses’ role in the future of health care. The New York

Times. Retrieved from http://www.nytimes.com

This newspaper article was written from the perspective of a medical doctor

reflecting on the approaching Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act being

implemented in 2014. The impending ramifications of an overloaded health

system with shortages in both Primary Care Physicians and nurses are discussed.

The collaborative report from the Institute of Medicine and Robert Wood Johnson

Foundation regarding the transforming of the health system is noted and the

author states support of the growing need for advanced practice nurses being

utilized as primary care providers.

This resource is found in a popular newspaper. It is not considered scholarly

information, but is a reflection of the current perception of the changes in

healthcare. This format could be used to highlight the author’s opinion, but since

information is not cited in the newspaper article, it cannot be used as fact based

information.

The perception of the current health care changes is important to consider as a

student attempting to enter the field as an advanced practice nurse. The article

highlighted current perception of medical doctors in relation to accepting FNP as

primary care providers. This article could be used to further increase the

understanding of such perceptions and lead to further research materials.

Dalton, M. A. (2013, January 10). Perceptions of the advanced nurse practitioner role in a

hospital setting. British Journal of Nursing, 22(1), 48-53. Retrieved from

http://www.britishjournalofnursing.com

The article discusses the results of a small scale qualitative study in a hospital in

the United Kingdom to determine the perceived roles of advanced practice nurses.

The study interviewed nurses, junior doctors and advanced practice nurses to

determine if the roles were clearly defined and if there is any disparity in practice

on day shift verses night shift.

The article is scholarly and presents the study in a professional manner. The

method of the study is clearly defined and statics are available. The role

confusion is specific to the hospital setting and specific to processes in place in

the UK. For this reason, the source may not be as pertinent to use in future

resource concerning FNP’s in the US. It does offer a comparison and contrast of

the issues faced for FNP’s on a global perspective.

of role transition. Journal of Nursing Education, 49(9), 416-20. Retrieved from

http://www.healio.com/journals/jne

The article discusses a qualitative study geared towards determining how Family

Nurse Practitioners perceived the transition from practicing as a registered nurse

to the advanced practice role. The purpose of the study was to develop education

models to assist future advanced practice nurses with less perceived difficulty in

the transition of the role. The study developed two phases of transition, first

being educational transition and second being the transition from expert in

practice as nurse to novice in practice in the advance nurse role.

The study is eight years old and therefore is not the best choice for a current

resource. It was one of the first studies of its kind and the research is limited in its

scope due to it only interviewed 9 participants and each FNP participant had been

in practice for a limited time. The benefit of the newly acquired role is that the

transition stresses were still fresh for the participants. The researchers state the

need for a broader study. Even though this research is well beyond the 5 years

recommended for a good resource, the nature of the material would be useful in

furthering research in this area.

Hunter, L. P., Weber, C. E., Wall, J. H., & Morreale, A. P. (2009, October). Patient satisfaction

with retail health clinic care. Journal of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners,

21(10), 565-570. http://dx.doi.org/doi:10.1111/j.1745-7599.2009.00447.x

The article is about a study that surveyed clients utilizing a retail health clinic for

their medical needs. The surveys were voluntary and were available to both

English speaking and Spanish speaking clients. The goal of the study was to

determine if the clients perceived they were getting quality care from the family

nurse practitioners and the physician assistants that provided medical services in

two urban retail clinics. The result of the study would indicate the perception of

level of care was positive and a future role for FNP’s in this format appears

promising.

The article is peer-reviewed and scholarly. The method for the research is clearly

described and statistical analysis presented. This source is usable for further

research in the area of the general population’s perception of care delivered by

FNP’s. Also, this study highlights a fairly new setting that FNP’s could prepare

to offer serviced in order to meet the growing health care challenges. The

information in the article is timely and expected to have even more impact in

health care as policies change.

This is a white paper report submitted by the Nursing Practice Action Committee-

APN Reimbursement work group of The Indiana Action Coalition. The report

first defines the advance practice registered nurse terminology and different

specialties that are recognized in Indiana. The report continues to outline the

historical background, scope of practice, licensing and certification, and

reimbursement for each APNP specialty.

The report culminates with recommendations for the advancement of the APNP

roles in order to meet the oncoming challenges in health care in Indiana.

The report is a professional report from the governing agencies in Indiana. The

information is factual and well organized. The governing agencies do have an

agenda to promote further use of APNP in Indiana and highlights their

recommendation to facilitate this process. This material is timely and factual and

would be an excellent addition to any research that involves Indiana nursing laws.

Nurse practitioner certification and practice settings: Implications for education and

practice. Journal of Nursing Scholarship, 43(2), 195-202. http://dx.doi.org/doi:

10.1111/j.1547-5069.2011.01395.x

The journal article discusses a survey study conducted to determine the different

settings advanced practice nurses across the nation are practicing. The article

notes the lack of a generalist tract for nurse practitioners as is available for

medical doctors. The intention of the study was to determine if APN were

working in settings consistent with the certification of specialty. The purpose of

the study was to determine potential gaps in the education of ANP’s. The

knowledge gained from the study has implications to improve education to APN’s

in the form of post certification continuing education.

The journal article is presented in a scholarly manner with method and statistics

well presented. The article is peer-reviewed and recent. This article would be an

excellent source for future research in the area of how current APN choosing to

use their expertise and if they are well prepared for such settings.

only in the United States, but globally. The discussion further defines potential

issues between the APN and medical staff. Finally, the article discussed the need

to progress the ANP’s role to meet growing healthcare needs.

The article is presented in a scholarly manner with methods well defined. The

information is applicable to the current issues regarding ANP role definition and

would be an asset to any future study.

National Governors Association. (2012). The role of nurse practitioners in meeting increasing

demand for primary care. Retrieved from

http://www.nga.org/files/live/sites/NGA/files/pdf/1212NursePractitionersPaper.pdf

This paper from the National Governors Association (NGA) assesses the growing

need for advanced practice nurses due to the changing horizon of healthcare.

Legislation will soon be in effect that will increase the number of people gaining

health insurance and this will ultimately place a strain on health care services

ability to meet the needs of the population. The NGA has noted a disparity in

requirements for APN’s to practice across the states and provides statistics from

and intensive investigation of each states governing bodies. An extensive

literature review documents the positive relationship APN’s has contributed to the

nation’s health care. Recommendations are made to ease scope of practice

restrictions, allowing APN’s to have more autonomy without direct supervision

from medical doctors. Also, recommendations are made to equalize

reimbursement for the practicing ANP. The overall goal of the paper is to

promote the APN role in order to meet the growing demands each state faces in

the current health care climate.

Role transition during RN-to-FNP education. The Journal of Nursing Education, 47(10),

441-7. Retrieved from http://www.healio.com/journals/jne

The article discusses a study completed to evaluate the relationships of positive

forces and obstacles perceived by registered nurses as they transition to the role of

family nurse practitioner. This is repeated study by the authors. The study was

first completed within a narrow scope in 2004 which assisted the authors in

developing educational frameworks. The researchers determined the study

needed to encompass a broader scope and the study was revised and implemented

via mail surveys across 2 states. The results differed in nature from the original

study. The researchers suggest the educators can use the study to improve

education and preceptor guidance to facilitate RN to FNP transitioning.

This study is presented in a scholarly manner with statistical analysis and methods

well defined. The information in the study lends itself easily to future research in

education need for the APN tracts.

The article explains the new topic in health care reform that is changing the

concepts of who primary care professional is to the patient. The new

developments a more patient centered instead of physician centered. This change

is not in terminology alone. Increasing support from accrediting agencies is

helping to develop models that place the unique needs of each patient in the center

and the patient becomes the one leading the care. The article states the evolution

of provider neutral language is recognition and acceptance of the role NP’s

provide in health care today.

This is not a scholarly article, but is published on a credible nursing website. The

article offers insight into the current political challenges facing APN’s in the US.

This article is useful in future research if only as a means to facilitate further

information to research.

Reflection

The development of an annotated bibliography, although time consuming initially, would

be to assist the researcher in organization of materials. It simplifies the process of returning to

the resources for information. Often the titles of articles are similar and it would be difficulty for

the researcher to remember what the importance was in the internal text of each resource. This is

my first experience with an annotated bibliography. Initially, I felt the process to be too time

consuming and thought the time would be better spent actually writing the paper rather than

summarizing the sources. Once the bibliography was completed and I read through the

summarizations, I realized the benefit of the work. In times past, I would have to basically re-

read an article to help spark my memory of why the resource was originally chosen. With the

summaries following each reference, I could easily return to the article knowing the information

I needed would be in that article.

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY ASSIGNMENT 10

I found it is difficult to find web based information that is usable in research. Even when

using a credible nursing site. Often the information is generalized and written in an opinion

format. When I did follow links on the credible nursing sites I was led to officially published

journal articles. I did not think this would be any different than finding the same published

article on a library search and therefor did not use those sources to represent my website

resource. I find the information in a website to only be useful in helping direct my attention to

certain subject that can then be further researched in the scholarly published works. Some of the

professional websites did offer literature reviews that would be helpful in finding credible

resources about a particular subject.

I found reading through the literature reviews offered on professional sites useful. It

highlighted the most recent studies and gave a good overview of the material. This would be

helpful in finding material or finding a subject worth furthering research. I have not written a

literature review and can see the process would be beneficial to future researchers, but only if he

reviews was then published for use. I imagine writing a review for your own personal library of

researched work would be beneficial to the student on a smaller scale or a group of students

collaborating on the same research material.

I was surprised when researching professional websites that many of the sites only offer

information to members. I was excited to find sites such as Coalition of Advanced Practice

Nurses of Indiana (CAPNI). I had thought finding information that affects advanced practice

nurses in my state of Indiana would be beneficial. Soon I was disappointed to find all the

information is available to members only. This site proved to be less than useful from a student

perspective. Finding credible websites that has useful information is difficult.

Page 11: Annotated Bibliography Assignment-+Annotated... · Web viewThe article offers insight into the current political challenges facing APN’s in the US. This article is useful in future

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY ASSIGNMENT 11

Another issue I found surprising was the number of scholarly published works that did

not include a digital object identifier (DOI). Specifically the Journal of Nursing Education did

not use the DOI as late as 2008 published works. Although the article is found using the library

search engine, it is recommended by the Publication manual of the American Psychological

Association (2010) to search for the journals website and use the site address in place of the DOI.

This was challenging because the web address is not similar to the title of the Journal and I was

skeptical the article could be found using this method. The use of a DOI simplifies the process

and I would think all scholarly journals would desire to use this system in order to have their

material easily usable.

Overall, I found this exercise surprisingly useful. As I stated previously, I thought the

process was too time consuming and the time could be better spent on the actual research paper.

I was surprised that my thoughts on the process once completed had changed so completely. I

now know that the work in developing the annotated bibliography could potentially save time

and frustration later in the writing process. I can only hope that as I become more comfortable

with the process of organizing and writing the annotated bibliography the process itself will

become less time consuming. Then the entire process would clearly be well worth the effort and

time. I also see the benefit of having a saved version of annotated references for each paper

written in order to quickly find reusable sources. This is an advantage that does not exist with a

reference page alone. This writing process was enlightening.
