WHAT IS AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY?

• A list of reference material, such as books and articles, in which you provide author, title, and publication details for each item (as in a bibliography) and a short review of that item• Listed in alphabetical order (by author’s surname)• Typically around 150 words long

PURPOSE

• Provides commentary on books and articles available in a field of study• Summarises the content, relevance and

quality of the articles• For readers to gain familiarity with a particular

body of work or field of study • For writers to prepare for doing a literature

review or research by gathering together resources and gaining an overview of the field of study

INFORMATION PROVIDED

• Citation: author and year (APA format)• Reference: full bibliographical details (APA format) • Summary: a clear indication of the content (and

argument) of the piece. May include: • subject or topic • author’s aim in writing the piece and authority• intended audience• essential contents of the piece• main ideas, or claims • key arguments and evidence

CRITIQUE

• Critical comment on the merits and weaknesses of the publication or on its contribution to the field of study. Some of the things you might consider evaluating are• Appropriateness of the article to its intended audience• Whether it is up to date• Its engagement with other import literature in the field• Personal responses to the article• Also see the CRAAP test (see Moodle)
