An additional 51 women received gift certificates of $50 each to purchase a wig. • 310 women participated in our Reach to Recovery program. They each were matched up with a volunteer survivor for support and also received a Reach to Recovery kit. This kit includes a surgical bra and prosthetic, information, comfort pillow, seatbelt cover, and other gifts. • 3,382 local individuals – persons with a cancer diagnosis, family members, friends – looked to your Nassau County American Cancer Society for information about diagnosis, treatment, support services, financial assistance and other available community resources. • 625 cancer patients received on-site patient navigation by a trained ACS volunteer/ staff member. • 469 ladies attended a Look Good…Feel Better sessions to address the cosmetic affects of treatment. They each received a free make-up and skin care kit. • 147 kids attended Camp Adventure, a fun-filled, sleep away camp program for children with cancer and their siblings, ages 6-18. It is a place where kids can just be kids while receiving the medical attention they need from a caring staff. Camp Adventure takes place in August on the beautiful shores of Shelter Island. • 1,700 Patients and Caregivers stayed at Hope Lodge NYC. After Dr. Dwight De Risi completed his studies at Seton Hall Universityand receivedhisDoctorate inMedicine fromGeorgetownUniversity SchoolofMedicine,hebeganhisresidencywithaneyeonbecominganopen-heartsurgeon.Butanewinterestincasesoftumorstranscendedhisearlierdesire. Dr.DeRisibegantoseethatcancerpatients,inparticular,seemedtobeinneedofnotonlythesupportofanexpertdoctortotakecareofthemsurgically,butalso support on an emotional level.

After finishing his surgical training at North Shore University Hospital, he received a graduatefellowshipdegreeinsurgicaloncologyatRoswellParkCancerInstituteinBuffalo.Dr.DeRisibecamethefirst surgically trainedoncologistdoingbreast cancer surgeryonLong Island, and in1999,withover25yearsofexperience,hestartedhissolopractice.In2010hispracticeLongIslandBreastCarepartneredwithProHEALTHCareAssociates.

Heisrecognizedasaleaderinhisfield,introducingandpopularizingimportantnewbreastcancersurgicaltechniques,includingmastectomywithimmediatereconstructionandpartialmastectomywithinternalflapreconstruction,aswellasotheradvancedprocedures.HehelpedintroducebreastMRI,oneofthemostrefinedtechniquesforbreastcancerevaluationwhichhasnowbecomeastandardofcare.

DeRisi’sabilitytodeveloparapportwithhispatientsledhimtopartnerwithseveralloyalpatientsandfoundanon-profitsupportgroupcalledLeanonMeBreastCancerNetworkInc.in2000.“LeanonMe”isaboutkeepingwomeninformed,”saysDeRisi.“Thevolunteers,whoaremostlyinpost-surgicaltreatmentthemselves,helpothersalongonaonetoonebasis,hookintotheirdailyevents,goouttolunchwiththem,andhelpthemthroughdifficulties,mentalandphysical.

DeRisiistheliaisonfortheCommissiononCanceratNorthShoreUniversityHospitalatGlenCove,andisheadofChiefofBreastservicesatProHEALTHCare.HeisafellowoftheAmericanCollegeofSurgeons,memberoftheAmericanMedicalAssociation,SocietyofSurgicalOncology,AmericanSocietyofClinicalOncology,AmericanSocietyofBreastDisease,MedicalSocietyoftheStateofNewYork,andNassauSurgicalSociety.

Through theyears,hehas receivedhonors from,amongothers,TheSassFoundation forMedicalResearch, The Beth C. Tortolani Foundation, New York College of Holistic Health, Lean on Me Breast Cancer Network Inc., NetworkingMagazine’s DavidAward, Hockey Fights Cancer, andThe 1st Long Island Breast Cancer Summit. Ifadoctorcanhaveoneinspirationandconfidant,DonnaDeRisiprovidesthebalancethatassuresherhusband’ssuccess.“Sheismybackbone,”saysDeRisi,whowithDonna,aNorthShoreUniversityHospitalsecretarywhobecamethefirstOperatingRoomtechnician,havefourchildren,Darren,Drew,Dara, and Deirdre, and four grandchildren.

GynecologicOncology,andisaFellowinAmericanCollegeofObstetriciansandGynecologists(ACOG)andofAmericanCollegeofSurgeons(ACS).

Dr.Chalashasheldaleadershiproleinanumberofimportantnationalsocieties.Shehasheldatwo-termpositionasGovernorintheAmericanCollegeofSurgeons,completedasixyeartermas Secretary-Treasurer of the Society ofGynecologicOncology (SGO) and servedon theboardofGynecologicCancer Foundation (GCF), now known as the Foundation forWomen’sCancer. Dr.ChalashasalsobeenamemberofnumerouscommitteesofACOGandcurrentlyservesastheChairofACOGDistrictII.Inthisrole,sherepresentsover3,000NewYorkStateobstetriciansandgynecologistsasamemberoftheExecutiveBoardoftheCollegeofObstetriciansandGynecologists.Shehasalsoservedasanofficeroflocalsocieties.

Dr.Chalashasreceivedmanyawardsforherwork.Sheismostproudofthe“1stAnnualWaveofHopeGala”and the “Something toBelieve In”, awardsgiven toherbygratefulpatientsandtheir familymembers.Shehasbeenconsistentlyselectedto the“TopDoctors” list,hasreceived“LocalLegendfromNewYork”awardfromtheAmericanMedicalWomen’sAssociationandwasgranted the National Leadership award by the National Republican Congressional Committee. Hercommitmenttomedicalstudentandresidentphysicianeducationhasbeenrecognizedbyanumberofexcellenceinteachingawards.

Dr. Chalas is theDirector of Clinical Cancer Services andVice-Chair of theDepartment ofObstetrics and Gynecology at Winthrop University Hospital, where she practices, caring forwomenwithgynecologiccancersorcomplexgynecologicproblems.Sheholdstheacademicrankof Professor,Department ofObstetrics,Gynecology andReproductiveMedicine at StonyBrookUniversity,SchoolofMedicine.

Dr.Chalashasbeenasteadfastsupporterofwomen’shealth.Sheisinvolvedinclinicalresearch,andhaspublishedandlecturedextensively,particularlyonpreventionandtreatmentofgynecologiccancers.Sheandherfamily,alongwithherpartners,patientsandhealthcareteam,havealonghistoryofparticipatingincommunityeventsregionallyandnationally,helpingincreaseawarenessofwomen’s cancers and raising funds to support research aimed at prevention, early detection andeffectivetherapy.
