It is a haunting debut novel that Han-nah Pittard has written. It is about adoles-cence and about growing older. It’s about small towns. It’s about being surprised by those we think we know. It’s also about “seeing someone for the last time but not knowing it’s the last time.”

The Fates Will Find Their Way is told from the collective point of view of a group of boys obsessed with the disap-pearance of 16-year-old classmate Nora Lindell. Her vanishing possesses the boys, individually and jointly, for three decades. Being trapped by who they are to become in their small town, the boys spend more time imagining Nora’s escape than effecting their own. They poignantly admit, “Our imaginations seemed to grow, to outdo what we’d ever believed possible. We outran our wildest fantasies.”

Was Nora the victim of a kidnapper?

Or did she become a waitress for a while, ultimately marry-ing an older Mexican out west and raising three girls with him? Was she the one spot-ted in an airport? Or was that really her spotted in Mumbai during the bomb-ings? Did she simply dis-appear at 16? Or has she been dead all that time?

While the boys spend 30 years imagining Nora’s fate, they are rarely in tune with who they are becoming. There’s a kind of rest-lessness about all the young men, but they’d rather be restless in the security of the lives they have inherited than completely content in the lives they could have made for themselves.

Yet there is a tender acceptance, rather than scorn, that Hannah Pittard feels toward her characters. Her book is a novel about what it’s like to be an adolescent

and what it’s like to remem-ber — for far too long — who we’ve been. It’s also about our not

being able to find the courage to see who we

Their Way is also about another truth.

After witnessing the horrors of the trench-es of the Great War, 18-year-old Alex White faces a different kind of terror in the country-side of Northern England: faeries.

It’s the wee people living deep in the forest, not the Boche with their bullets and bayonets, who threaten the young American. Protecting him is an unlikely ally, Magda, a witch old enough to be his mother.

Then there’s the lithe Rutha-na, with her cream-colored skin and golden hair, only 3 feet tall but big enough to kiss Alex’s lips and steal his heart. Too bad that her brother Gilly has despised human beings ever since a hunter shot and killed his shape-shifting father. And Magda, it turns out, has a dark side herself.

Author Richard Matheson makes it all seem believable as well as compelling, at least enough so that readers of his new novel, Other Kingdoms, can identify with Alex’s fears, hopes and regrets.

The fantastical has long been Matheson’s kingdom. He has found his widest audience with memorable teleplays for television’s The Twilight Zone and with movies adapted from his novels I Am Legend, What Dreams May Come and Somewhere in Time. In this new tale, he wraps the fantastic around themes that recur in his work: the joy of love, the pain of loss and the longing for a chance to make

from the perspective of a writer — a typical Matheson protago-

nist — looking back on events that he still doesn’t quite under-

stand. At 82, roughly Matheson’s own age, the elderly Alex is an annoying storyteller at times (too

many asides), but so wonderfully eccentric that it’s difficult to want

to tell him to stop.Faerie lore suggests that differ-

ent types have different abilities — human beings would call them

tricks. Matheson himself is a literary faerie of sorts, his trick being his ability to coax us off a story’s familiar pathway to take us deep and deeper into his world until we accept what we instinctively reject. Those open to imagining such things couldn’t ask for a better guide.

‘Kingdoms’ a new type of faerie tale

NEW YORK — Bill Clin-ton has entered the spying game.

The former president, whose memoir sold mil-lions of copies, has written a preface for his friend Thomas Caplan’s The Spy Who Jumped Off the Screen. The book is a thriller about movie star and former intelligence officer Ty Hunter and his race to keep nuclear warheads out of the wrong hands.

Clinton, who roomed with Caplan when both were at Georgetown Uni-versity, praises the novel as a “stylish, involving, utterly contemporary puzzle.” Viking, an imprint of Penguin Group (USA), announced Tuesday that the book comes out in early 2012.

In season one of Glee, I told a friend that the show will be defined by how it advances past the popular-ity problem that plagues the Glee Club kids.

It seemed that through the entire first season the kids

were entering and leaving Glee club based on how they felt that day, but there was a plot that made sense, and the characters did things that were consistent with the type of character they were. There was even some character growth, even if it was just

with Quinn and Kurt’s father, Burt. Those moments of growth were

some of the most rewarding aspects of the show. Watching these kids grow up a little bit over a season, mixed with some fun and absurdly fantastical dance numbers, made Glee worth watching. It wasn’t great TV, but it was pretty good and it was fun, and at times very heart warm-ing. And at the end of the first season when Sue votes for the Glee Club at regionals, you would think we had turned a corner or at least defined her character a little bit.

However season two comes along and what these characters are and their potential for growth has broken down considerably. Now it seems like every episode has a “very special episode” theme where they deal with — but never actually deal with — a hot topic, controversial subject. That would be forgivable because they will eventually run out of con-troversial subjects, but the real prob-lems are in how sloppy they install these plots into the main storyline and character arcs by completely destroying all past continuity each week.

For instance, Tuesday’s episode focused all on sex and sex education, so the show starts off with Rachel and Quinn in the Celibacy Club led by guidance counselor Emma. Now comes the development that Emma — despite having been married for four months now — is still a virgin. Now, yes, she is an OCD germa-phobe, but last we really saw her and

her issues as a plot point, her fiancé was helping her overcome those issues with remarkable success. But now she has transformed into a 30-year-old woman who doesn’t have sex because the show needs her to not have sex for their overly convo-luted plot-of-the-week. Not to men-tion that I don’t think very many hus-bands are going to be that patient, and would at least seek some kind of counseling or therapy before the four-month mark. Also, this marks the second time that Emma has been married and all signs point to her getting out of this marriage as well.

When the show does keep con-sistency with its now very shaky

continuity, it works great. Again in Tuesday’s episode, Kurt’s father and Blaine have a nice moment where Blaine tells Burt that despite him being uncomfortable about his son’s sexuality, he needs to give him “the talk.” And when Burt and Kurt finally do have “the talk,” it’s a really touch-ing, nice moment that highlights the steady, consistent growth both characters have had over the course of two seasons.

It will be interesting see how Glee progresses. Because I really do like it, and I want it to be good and not just a show consistently conforming to the whims of what the writers want each week — like writing their own songs.

If you think U.S. politics has got-ten ugly, wait until you’ve spent some time in the city of Kirkwall. The Templars want to subjugate the mages. The priests of the Chantry don’t trust the brutish Qunari. The Dalish elves want to avoid humans altogether.

Take this stew of suspicion and corruption and stir in hundreds of desperate Fereldan refugees, on the run from the demonic Darkspawn that have overrun their homeland. Even without the dragons, ogres and giant spiders lurking in the wilder-ness, Kirkwall isn’t exactly the Emer-ald City.

It is the setting for “Dragon Age II” (Electronic Arts, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, $59.99), the lat-est role-playing adventure from the masters at BioWare. And it’s radically different from the bucolic land-scapes associated with epic fantasy since The Lord of the Rings. Some RPG fans will find Kirkwall claustro-phobic, but you can sense mysteri-ous, often nefarious doings behind

every door — a feeling any urban dweller will recognize.

The protagonist — also referred to as “the Champion” — is Hawke, and you can play as either a man or a woman. (Since I chose female, I’ll refer to Hawke as “her.”) You can start as a warrior, a mage or a rogue, and as you gain experience, you can evolve into a berserker, a healer, an assassin or one of six other job classes.

Hawke’s initial goals are to find a new home for her mother and to protect her sister, a mage, from the Templars. As Hawke’s power and influence grow, she attracts an entourage of lively characters, with their own problems and ambi-tions. Anders (who returns from last year’s “Awakening”) is a mage who’s struggling to control the vengeance demon inside his head. Isabela is a saucy pirate who yearns to return to the high seas. Merrill is a wistful elf who’s alienated from her clan. There are about 800 more stories in this naked city, and almost all of them are intriguing.

Most of the story is told through dialogue, and the way Hawke

responds to friends, rivals and other Kirkwall denizens influences the course of the game. You usually have three ways to respond — polite, sarcastic or stern — but the choices don’t always break down that sim-ply. And you cannot approach every conversation the same way; Isabela may enjoy your sense of humor, but that doesn’t make it appropriate at a funeral.

Of course, there are thousands of enemies, human and otherwise, to battle, and BioWare has tweaked combat to make it feel smoother and more immediate. You control one fighter while the computer controls your three companions, but you can switch between bodies at any time. Get your mages, rogues and warriors synched and you can really dole out the damage.

“Dragon Age II” is somewhat of a creative gamble for BioWare; shifting the typically sprawling role-play-ing genre into a relatively confined urban milieu is bound to leave some fans grumbling. But while it’s grit-tier and less grandiose, it’s still an epic drama, and the journey is very rewarding. Four stars out of four.

NEW YORK — Dido doesn’t know the sex of her baby, but she’s not going wait until her due date to find out.

“I’m too curious,” the British singer-songwriter said in a recent interview. “It’s enough of a surprise on the day.”

Dido is due to have her first child this summer. It’s already been a big year: She was nominated for an Academy Award for best song for co-writing “If I Rise” from the movie 127 Hours, and is finishing up a new album.

“I’m nearly done,” she said last month about her upcoming album. “Music will just start coming out as this year goes on.”

Dido, perhaps best known stateside for the song “Thank You,” which was sampled by Eminem for “Stan,” said her new record brings her back to her electronic roots. She’s once again working with her brother, Rollo Armstrong, as well as other produc-ers.

“It’s been a thoroughly enjoyable record,” she said. “It’s a real mix and in a funny sort of way, it’s a mix of everything, some sort of big electronic extravaganza. It’s much more electronic than the last record.”

Safe Trip Home, which was released in 2008, was Dido’s last studio album. She’s more eager to perform in front of fans with her new album.

“... I didn’t want to tour that record for a really long time, partly because it was a really dark record and stuff, whereas this record, apart from anything, there’s a lot of really fun stuff on this record,” the 39-year-old said.

Of course, before Dido goes on the road, she’ll be dealing with her first priority: her new baby. She didn’t perform at the Oscars because of her pregnancy, and after the baby is born, she plans to take time off. But for the moment, she’s enjoying the “very exciting” time in her life.

“There’s a real calmness about it which I think is really nice. Your decisions are sort of made for you,” she said, laughing. “You just have this priority that is unchangeable and I think that’s a great calmness that comes from that.”

TOKYO — Yoshiki has sold more than 30 million records. Concerts by his heavy metal band X Japan pack stadi-ums. Everywhere he goes, he is trailed by screaming fans. But that’s just being big in Japan.

Yoshiki has his eyes on bigger hori-zons: fame in the global music industry.

It’s not enough he has his share of followers in neighboring China, Taiwan and South Korea. What he wants is star-dom in the U.S., the home of rock ‘n’ roll.

“I want to be a household name,” Yoshiki told The Associated Press in a recent interview. “If you’re going to do something, there is nothing but reaching the very top.”

A Los Angeles resident for more than a decade, Yoshiki, 45, has carefully planned his international debut, study-ing not only the Western music scene but also the English language.

A new album of X Japan hits — tailor-made for American listeners, with lyrics translated into English and the tracks heavier on the bass — is set for release this year, complete with a U.S. tour.

Last year, X Japan made its American performance debut at the Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago, alongside established artists including Lady Gaga and Green Day.

Still, Yoshiki, whose surname is Hayashi but goes by one name, knows he is aiming for a success that has long eluded Japanese pop artists.

The only exception has been Kyu Sakamoto, whose hit song “Sukiyaki” topped the 1963 Billboard charts. No one has come close since. Acts such as Puffy and Shonen Knife drew some attention, but mostly for their quirkiness.

Yoshiki believes X Japan’s chances for international glory have never been so good, given the foreign interest in frilly “costume-play” fashions, “manga” comic books and animation — all key parts of so-called “cool Japan” cultural exports.

So, can X Japan join sushi, video games and Hello Kitty as a Japanese gift to the world? Are Americans ready for X Japan?

“I’m not sure,” said Yoshiki, who is soft-spoken and polite offstage, hiding behind dark glasses, in contrast to his fierce, trancelike stage persona. “In the U.S., anything can happen. I think we have a chance.”

X Japan was founded in 1982, when

Yoshiki was still in high school. The band went on to pioneer an entire genre in Japan called “visual rock,” characterized by doll-like makeup, flashy costuming and spiky, colorful hair. X Japan dis-banded in 1997, but has periodic come-back concerts.

Yoshiki, who started studying piano when he was 5 and drumming at 10, writes the X Japan scores, which juxta-pose pensive balladic moments with the frantically throbbing beat and energy of rock.

American musician Marilyn Manson compares Yoshiki with rock icons like Mick Jagger, Iggy Pop and David Bowie.

“They can make it wherever they want,” Mason told the AP when asked of X Japan’s chances for success outside Japan. “His music is very, very strong. It is important. It is very American.”

Izumi Narita, an 18-year-old high school student from suburban Tokyo, is another believer.

“There is no other band like X Japan,” she said. “It’s fantastic how Yoshiki stoi-cally pursues what he believes in, with-out ever compromising.”

Less optimistic is pop music critic Steve McClure, the former Tokyo bureau chief for Billboard magazine, who doubts X Japan’s appeal can extend beyond a niche audience.

“Good luck to Yoshiki. But don’t hold your breath,” he said.

To duplicate the kind of fame Yoshiki has achieved in Japan would be a chal-lenge for anyone.

He has glossed the covers of dozens

of magazines. He has his own line of jew-elry, his own video game, his own wine. At a recent fashion show, he showed “Yoshikimono,” a punk-inspired kimo-no. Former Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi is among his fans.

When X Japan guitarist Hideto Mat-sumoto, 33, nicknamed Hide, was found dead in his apartment from an apparent suicide in 1998, the nation went into mourning. A teenager died in one of several copycat suicide attempts that followed.

Over the years, Yoshiki has expanded into producing bands for his label Extasy Records, and writing movie scores such as Saw IV. In 1999, he wrote and per-formed a classical piano composition for Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko.

Yoshiki acknowledges that if he becomes famous in the West, he might miss the anonymity he now enjoys in the U.S. to go grocery shopping without get-ting mobbed by fans.

“I’ll deal with it when I get there,” he said.

Fame is important because music saved him, Yoshiki says. The root of his creative drive is a hidden rage inside, the anger and loneliness he felt growing up, not understanding why his father committed suicide when Yoshiki was 10, leaving him, his mother and his brother.

“I had nowhere to turn” except for music, Yoshiki said. “Then, I realized there was no need to suppress my feel-ings in music. Music is wonderful. I want to help others, too, and give back to music.”

As celebrity-gossip follow-ers know, she dealt with dras-tic life changes over those years. In 2007, she divorced her first husband, politician Craig Schelske, amid alle-gations of cheating on both sides; she quit the TV series “Dancing with the Stars” mid-season to deal with the revelations. She then married a for-mer star college quarterback, Jay Barker, uniting their seven kids under one roof after moving from Nashville to Alabama.

So, predictably, Evans’ new song

trumpets renewal and strength. How-ever, the anthemic songs fall flat: On the fist-pumping “A Little Bit Stronger” and the spiritually inclined “Desperately,” Evans sounds oddly detached and the arrangements sound overly dramatic.

But once she gets past the front-loaded survivor songs, she settles into

layered tunes that better reveal her strengths. The multi-dimen-sional “My Heart Can’t Tell You No,” about a woman who

doesn’t fully break from the man who hurt her, and the

breezy “Anywhere” bring out a verve in Evans’ husky voice

that is absent from the big showcase tunes.

CHECK OUT THIS TRACK: On “Alone,” the album’s most powerful ballad, Evans conveys the knotty emo-tions of telling a lover she loves his atten-tiveness and devotion—but she needs him to understand that, on occasion, she needs time to herself, too.

Vol. 2 from The Baseball Project is much like Vol. 1: hit and miss.

The lineup of Steve Wynn, Scott McCaughey, Peter Buck and Linda Pitmon again rocks out to original tunes about the national pastime. The lyrics sometimes read like clunky prose written by baseball geeks, and a few musical choices are odd (a klezmer-style lament about Tony Conigli-aro?).

Still, the band bats better than .500, thanks to considerable help off the bench. One especially lusty cut is a witty tribute to the Twins sung by the Hold Steady’s Craig Finn and titled “Don’t Call Them Twinkies.” Also pitching in are Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie, Ira Kaplan of Yo La Tengo and Steve Berlin of Los Lobos.

As with the band’s debut release in 2008, the subject matter is eclectic. The Bird is the word on “1976,” which remembers the late Mark “The Bird” Fidrych, and “Ichiro Goes to the Moon” is a rollicking piece of bubblegum that suggests the Mariners’ right fielder can do

anything he wants. Several songs sympathize with much-maligned players from the past, among them Pete Rose, Roger Clemens and Bill

Catherine Hardwicke tries to transfer her panting pretty young things Twi-light style to Red Riding Hood, a were-wolf WITHOUT the vampires fantasy aimed at that magical PG-13 audience.

And for all the heaving bosoms, the big-eyed flirtation and the cool fairytale hair products, it doesn’t work.

Amanda Seyfried has the title role. She is Valerie, who wears the scarlet hood Grandma (Julie Christie) made for her, dodging in and out of the almost-enchanted forest around her village of Daggerhorn. For generations, a were-wolf has been taking livestock offered as sacrifice by the frightened townsfolk. “We’ve kept the peace,” the locals say as they tie up another pig on another full moon.

But Valerie’s sister is killed and all bets are off. The men, including two competing for Valerie’s affection, set out to kill the wolf. The weak-kneed

local priest (Lukas Haas) sends for a specialist — Father Solomon (Gary Oldman). Solomon arrives with a team of medieval commandos, riding in an armored coach, followed by a hollow bronze elephant-shaped torture cooker. Hunting for a werewolf in the woods is a waste of time, Father Solomon intones. The wolf is in their ranks.

“There’s a big bad wolf, and some-one has to stop it,” he tells his children, to calm them. He’s not worried about calming the villagers: “You have no idea what you’re dealing with.”

Solomon preaches paranoia and Valerie looks into every face with grow-ing suspicion, if not terror. Terror would have been good, but Seyfried plays this Red Riding as a somewhat fearless tomboy. Girlfriend keeps a knife in her knickers.

That’s handy, because the wolf might be Peter (Shiloh Fernandez), her child-hood beau. Or maybe it’s Henry (Max Irons, son of Jeremy), the “rich” black-smith’s son her mother (Virginia Mad-sen) wants her to marry. Then again, there’s the moment when she tells her granny, “What big TEETH you have.” And Red Riding’s dad is also Bella’s dad from Twilight (Billy Burke). Try to pre-tend that’s not eyebrow-raising.

Johnson incorporates a few “big bad wolf” gags that fall utterly flat here. The dialog is cut-and-paste “Promise me you’ll be careful” pabulum and the like. Hardwicke bathes her characters in the comfy backlit glow of a glamor photo, but none of the performances pop off the screen. Young Irons stands out as almost amateurish, never knowing quite how to convey what’s on the page onto his face. Even the reliably hammy Oldman seems lost without having bet-ter lines to say or scenes to play.

But Seyfried and Fernandez click as a couple and Hardwicke showcases them to good effect. The woodsy, real-istic fantasy setting is striking, as is the resemblance between Madsen, Christie and Seyfried, who really could be from one big beautiful blonde family. And the fights, though predictably struc-tured and shot, pay off.

Remembering her earlier films thir-teen, Lords of Dogtown and The Nativity Story, and hearing of how Hardwicke was shown the door from the super-lucrative Twilight film franchise she launched, makes one wish better things for one of the few successful female filmmakers in Hollywood. But her Red Riding Hood is far more grim than Grimm, and not nearly as much fun as it should have been.

LOS ANGELES — Director Catherine Hardwicke made Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner household names when she cast the trio of young actors in Twilight in 2008. Now she hopes to work her same star-making magic with Red Riding Hood.

Amanda Seyfried plays Valerie, a young woman betrothed to one man but in love with another. Newcomers Shiloh Fernandez and Max Irons play her two would-be lovers in the fantasy tale set in a medieval village that’s haunted by a werewolf.

Though Seyfried has appeared in more than a dozen films, Irons and Fernandez have just a handful of acting credits each. The 25-year-old actress says Hardwicke has “an eye for casting and she has an eye for chemistry.”

“When she sees two people connect, she becomes your biggest fan she wants to take that and make that into something beauti-ful,” Seyfried says. “I think she saw that with Rob (Pattinson) and Kristen (Stewart) and she has been very vocal about that. When she first saw Shiloh (Fernandez) and me do our chemistry read, she saw something and I saw something.”

Hardwicke, 55, also launched careers for Nikki Reed, who co-wrote and starred in Thirteen and went on to appear in the Twi-light series, and Emile Hirsch, a star of Lords of Dogtown whose credits now include star-ring roles in Into the Wild and Milk.

“It’s very fun for me,” Hardwicke says. “If people have this talent or this goal, things that they are working toward that if you can give them a chance or give them a voice ... I love the idea of helping them get there.”

Hardwicke also works with young writers.“A 22-year-old friend of Nikki’s and mine

wrote the (Red Riding Hood) novel, which got on the New York Times best seller list ... so whatever the person’s talent is, I love the idea of helping them get there.”

“She’s got a knack for it,” says Gary Old-man, who plays a veteran werewolf hunter in Red Riding Hood.

“She kind of understands this coming-of-age and teenage-angle angst,” he says. “And she is very good at casting.”

Fernandez, one of the main love interests in the film, was almost cast in Robert Pattin-son’s role in Twilight.

“Thank God he wasn’t,” Seyfried says, “so he could be in our movie.”

The romantic com-edy from director Roger Michell faces a huge hurdle: Can the perky, likable and energetic performance by McAd-ams negate the grumpy, cantankerous and life-less work by Harrison Ford? In this case, yes.

The Walking Dead: The Complete First Sea-son, Grade A: The AMC series is a brilliant blend of horror elements with human stories, that has done for the horror genre what Mad Men did for TV dramas. Both show that familiar formats can become very original through great writing, acting and cinematog-raphy.

The series is based on the popular Robert Kirkman Image Comics

series that launched in 2003.

Inside Job, Grade C-plus: Director Charles Ferguson does his best to provide a broad look at the factors that created the financial crisis in his Oscar-winning docu-mentary.

The film charts the miscues that started dur-ing the Reagan admin-istration and continue today with President Obama that have cost more than $20 trillion and resulted in millions losing their jobs.

It’s well-made, infor-mative and detailed. It will thrill those who actually know the differ-ence between a PPO and a CDO.

The Next Three Days, Grade C-plus: Russell Crowe plays a man who hatches a plan to break his wife (Elizabeth Banks) out of jail.

If you can make it to the jail break, that part’s exciting. The problem is getting through the lack of chemistry between Crowe and Banks and the absurd notion a college professor can

You’ll want to stay through the closing credits of the new motion capture animated adventure Mars Needs Moms, a film from the people who gave us The Polar Express. There are four minutes of clips of the real-live cast of the film, Seth Green, Joan Cusack and Dan Fogler among them, wearing the mo-cap suits, dots covering their faces so that the sensors can digitally mimic their movements, actions and facial reactions as they act out what’s going to be animated.

It’s fascinating and also the lightest and funniest part of this film, based on a novel by Bloom County creator Berkeley Breathed. Though light enough in tone,

packed with good messages and delivering a couple of lovely, touching moments, Mars still has that plastic look that made you wish you were seeing the REAL Tom Hanks in Polar Express or the REAL Jim Carrey in A Christmas Carol.

Cute characters and a Star Wars derived plot — rescuing a damsel from a heavily garrisoned

“citadel” — drive this tale, a movie more interested in action beats than in big laughs. It’s not bad, and is considerably more kid-friendly than the trippy and more adult-oriented Rango. It’s just not as much fun as a live-action version of the same story might have been.

Milo hates taking out the trash and won’t eat his broccoli. And when Mom (Joan Cusack) lays

down the law — “No broccoli, no TV,” he revolts.

Milo, who looks to be about 11, learns a big life lesson with that. Words can wound. He makes his mom cry.

Imagine his guilt when, a few hours later, she’s abducted by aliens. He scrambles after her and learns an awful secret — Mars Needs Moms. And not just any moms, GOOD moms. Ones who lay down the law, teach their chil-dren respect, discipline, manners and values, maybe teach their kids not to kick the seat in front of them at the movie theater.

Martians spy on us, pick out a mom doing a good job, and grab her so that they can use her brain to encode their nanny robots, which they use to raise baby Mar-tians miles below the surface of the planet, far from the probing eye of the Mars Rover.

Milo is at a loss about how to rescue Mom until he himself is saved by Gribble, a portly subter-ranean nerd played by Dan Fogler. Gribble stowed away to Mars just like Milo and has survived, built

robots and filled his own junk-yard lair with hi-tech gear. He is surrounded by hordes of goofy, dreadlocked outcasts from Mars society whom he can understand (he’s built a translator) but can’t communicate with.

Milo has mere hours to con-vince Gribble to help rescue his mother before her brain is cooked, hours to find and meet a Martian graffiti artist (Elisabeth Harnois) in revolt against the regimented, colorless matriarchy of Mars.

Director Simon Wells worked on Prince of Egypt and The Time Machine and is right at home with the endless digital chases, shoot-outs and such. He and his anima-tors also deliver a couple of those big emotional moments that gave Up and Toy Story 3 their pathos. But laughs? He doesn’t do well with the ones the script sets up.

It all makes for an intricate if slow and somewhat humor-starved early Mother’s Day pres-ent in which a boy learns just how much his mom means to him on the Red Planet. Mars Needs Moms, but Milo needs Mom even more.

Disaster films will really get interesting when they start running out of iconic sky-lines to destroy. How about Battle: Wichita or Deep Impact: Albany?

Battle: Los Angeles doesn’t rely as much as its genre brethren on the gleeful horror of seeing familiar landmarks burn. (We don’t even get a shot of the “Hollywood” sign in flames.) Instead, this West Coast version of alien invasion distinguishes itself as an urban warfare film and a patri-otic advert for the Marines.

Like so many of these films, Battle: Los Angeles opens on urgent news reports announcing that “the world is at war.” CNN snippets are laced throughout the movie, and it’s easy to see their function in relay-ing exposition. But it’s rather terrifying to think that even extra-terrestrials can’t stop the 24/7 stream of cable news.

The date is Aug. 12, 2011. Alien ships, first appearing like a cluster of meteors, “breach” the Earth and quickly make their violent intentions clear, shooting gun-like weapons and discharging flying mechani-cal droids. One of the 12 ships lands just off the shore of L.A.’s laid-back Santa Monica.

The film flashes back 24 hours to introduce the handful of Marines whom we will follow into battle. Staff Sergeant Nantz (Aaron Eckhart) is retiring after a particularly rough mission only vaguely referred to. Though it’s his last day, the weary veteran is dispatched to assist a platoon of young Marines (Ne-Yo, Cory Hardrict among them) expecting to head to Afghanistan.

We get brief visions of their soon-to-change lives, all in various stages of het-erosexual development: one is a virgin, another engaged, another with a pregnant wife.

It’s the first hint that director Jonathan Liebesman (The Texas Chainsaw Massa-cre: The Beginning) and screenwriter Chris Bertolini are most interested in a conven-tional war film. All the hallmarks are here, with handheld cameras and rousing, “ooh-

rah” solidarity — just with the notable exception of enemy species.

Once the aliens have landed, the unit is sent into Santa Monica with the seemingly inconsequential task of rescuing a handful of civilians (Bridget Moynahan, Michael Pena) trapped at a police station. They’re told to “kill anything that’s not human,” which can be a challenging distinction even on Santa Monica’s best days.

Masked in a haze or jumping from rooftops, the aliens aren’t seen straight on for some time. When we eventually do get a good look at them, they aren’t any-thing special. Above all else, the audience demands unique extra-terrestrials in such a movie: a radical set of fangs, at least, or some new, ravishing variation of antennae.

As the marines make their way through

the wreckage and various skirmishes with the aliens, great care is taken to portray military hierarchy. In command is Lieu-tenant William Martinez (Ramon Rodri-guez), whom Nantz guides as a subordi-nate advisor.

There’s great trepidation among the platoon for Nantz, who’s rumored to have led several of his men into death. But Nantz keeps the group focused and grounded, much as the talented Eckhart (The Dark Knight, Thank You For Smoking) does for the film.

With a square jaw and reluctant eyes, Eckhart fits the part well, and does a great deal to keep Battle: Los Angeles engaging. He and Liebesman manage to pull off the ultra-seriousness for much of the film, before a laughable speech of teary-eyed

inspiration finally does them in.In times of great terrorist concerns,

there’s obvious comfort in depicting a war with such a clear-cut enemy: If we can’t straighten out Afghanistan, at least we can kick some alien behind.

The spectacle of disaster is oddly lack-ing throughout. At one point, our jaws are supposed to drop for an obliterated free-way onramp. There’s also little sense of Los Angeles: No terrified actors running from set, no jokes that a sophisticated subway system would have really come in handy with aliens buzzing overhead.

Instead, the movie stays surprisingly close to the ground, bogged down in block-by-block combat. Los Angeles traffic tri-umphs again. (In reality, 90 percent of the film was shot in low-tax Louisiana.)

These are the songs we know by heart.

Songs that are forever on our minds — constantly breaking through without rhyme or reason — drifting through our memories like the images of distant loved ones. Songs we sing in the shower, or alone in our car. They are what we hum while walking through the mall or just as we teeter on the brink of sleep.

If to hear good music is to be home-sick for a place we’ve never known, then for those who love Broadway, these are the songs that lead us there.

And on March 18, that path leads straight to the Oxford Civic Center, where renowned producer Neil Berg will bring his 100 Years of Broadway show.

Hosted by the Oxford Arts Council, this musical revival brings to the stage Broadway’s most beloved songs per-formed by five of the stars who helped make them famous — all while being backed by a New York City band with

Berg playing piano and adding accom-panying vocals.

From Cats and Mamma Mia! to Les Misérables and Man of La Mancha and even a Grease medley, 100 Years of Broadway promises to strike a chord, explains Theresa Haynes, treasurer for

the Oxford Arts Council. “These are the songs that everyone

can relate to and remember,” she says. “Everybody — no matter what their ages — has heard most of them, and they don’t need to have even seen a musical to appreciate just how good

they really are.”But for as much as the songs will

take center stage, it will also be the Broadway stars themselves who are sure to inspire endless rounds of applause.

Joining Berg on stage during the March 18 performance will be:

Carter Calvert, who sang “Fever” eight times a week in the Tony-nomi-nated musical It Ain’t Nothin’ But the Blues, first at the Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theatre and then at the Ambassador Theatre on Broad-way; Robert DuSold, who’s performed in Jekyll & Hyde and Les Misérables; Andrea Rivette, who appeared in Miss Saigon and Jekyll & Hyde; performer and Tony Award-nominated chorog-rapher Ted Levy; and Danny Zolli, who has toured the world portraying Jesus, Judas and Annas in more than 19 pro-ductions of Jesus Christ Superstar.

With such a set list, 100 Years of Broadway could serve as the perfect introduction to musicals for the young-er generation, especially those familiar with a TV show that’s helped revive show tunes, Haynes says.

“With Glee being so popular and how young people love that show, this is absolutely perfect,” she says. “And they might discover they know a lot of these songs from the show and not know where they really came from.”

For all the excitement this show promises to fans of Broadway, it’s something a bit more practical that makes Haynes particularly proud.

“We try really hard to keep the cost down,” she says. “Not everyone can afford a trip to Birmingham or Atlanta to see this kind of show, but this way it’s something that absolutely everyone can enjoy.”

LOS ANGELES — Comedy Central might be the first TV net-work to make money from the Internet.

The cable television network’s newest hit, Tosh.0, attracts 4 mil-lion viewers an episode, even more than who watch Comedy Central’s signature programs The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report.

Tosh.0’s premise is simple: Stand-up comedian Daniel Tosh and a small team that works out of a Culver City, Calif., studio cull the Internet for amateur video clips. Then, each week, Tosh offers up caustic commentary before a live audience about the hapless victims caught on camera. The show’s cornerstone is a novel segment called “Web Redemption” in which the sub-jects of clips made infamous on the Web relive their embarrassing moment — but this time with a happy ending.

Now in its third season, Tosh.0 has become the first television show to turn raw material from the Internet into successful tele-vision programming. It appeals to young male viewers — an elusive audience for advertisers — making Tosh.0 and its website a must-buy for video game makers, movie studios and auto compa-nies.

Mindful that so many of the 20-somethings who relish Tosh’s brand of hijinks spend as much, if not more, time glued to com-puters and mobile devices than watching TV, the show’s produc-ers have made it a priority to have a robust presence online. Even the show’s name — Tosh.0 — invokes the language of the Web.

Before the show launched in 2009, executives did something unusual for a TV production. Web producers, adept at writing code and uploading videos, were hired to work alongside show produc-ers and writers. The geeks were even allowed into the hallowed “writers room,” where they could join the back-and-forth wise-cracking that goes into preparing Tosh’s on-air jokes.

“The show had to live online. It’s a blog at its core,” said Erik Flannigan, executive vice presi-dent of digital media for MTV Networks Entertainment, which includes Comedy Central. “This is a show about the Web. And we had to make sure that whatever we posted had instant credibility on the Web.”

Producers update the show’s website and blog throughout the day, even when the series is on hiatus. Traffic to the site, which is averaging 3.2 million monthly visitors this season, is on track to more than double from last season. The show’s ratings are up nearly 50 percent since last sea-son. During each Tuesday night broadcast, Tosh and producers

crowd into a conference room and tweet up a storm along with fans. The show’s Facebook page is continually updated. The result: more than 4 million users have given it a thumbs-up.

Tosh’s snarky comments and willingness to perform Jackass-like stunts endear him to young males, who make up two-thirds of Tosh.0’s audience. He recently caught a bowling ball speeding down a water slide between his legs, leaving a cantaloupe-sized bruise.

“There are a million videos where someone gets kicked in the groin; this is the type of comedy that resonates well with young men,” said Brent Poer, manag-ing director of ad-buying agency

MediaVest. Tosh’s tone and sketches, he said, “stay true to the format of the Internet.”

In fact, it was the Web that tipped off Comedy Central execu-tives to the show’s future ratings success. Early in its first season, traffic on Tosh.0’s website and references in the blogosphere were disproportionately high compared to the show’s ratings, Flannigan said. Producers quickly noticed a correlation: Viewership spiked following weeks of the intense, online buzz.

“It all came together kind of by accident,” said Charlie Siskel, the show’s executive producer. “The show’s success was not ordained nor devised through some corpo-rate goal setting. People liked the show and they would chime in about the videos, and we started looking for more ways to connect them back to the show.”

Ever since YouTube exploded onto the scene in 2005, with its gusher of amateur clips of sneez-ing pandas and cats playing the piano, TV network executives have searched for ways to make material from the Internet work on TV. NBC bombed trying to bring a Web series about young artists called Quarterlife to televi-sion. The CW and VH1 misfired with video clip shows Online Nation and Web Junk. The CBS sit-com $*! My Dad Says, based on a blog and starring William Shatner, has left advertisers curs-ing.

“Most people have been try-ing to tame the Web,” Poer said. Instead of watering down the content, he said, Comedy Central took the approach: “Here it is; we are going to embrace the content and tone, and curate it in a way that’s topical.”

Tosh.0 has done so well that it has been attracting more men in the coveted 18- to 34-year-old demographic as the most suc-cessful comedy on NBC, The Office. Still, all young male audi-ences do not appeal to advertis-ers equally. Despite its success, Comedy Central has been unable to charge the same premium ad rates as NBC does because, despite the show’s popularity, it lacks prestige and is frequently

full of bathroom humor.But that’s what fans like.“After the first episode, I was

hooked,” said Ed Gunther, a 17-year-old high school senior from North Carolina. His favorite Tosh segment is “I’m Better Than You, Na-Na-Na Boo, Stick Your Head in Doo Doo.”

“Nearly everything that Daniel Tosh says or does makes me and my family laugh,” Gunther said.

Comedy Central, owned by Viacom Inc., is smiling too. The show costs less than $400,000 per episode to produce, about one-fifth the cost of a network sitcom.

Tosh, 35, who shuns most media interviews and declined to comment for this story, is becom-ing one of Comedy Central’s “franchise players” along with Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker.

Sunday, the network ran an hour-long special of his stand-up act called Daniel Tosh: Happy Thoughts and plans to pick up the show for additional seasons. The special attracted 3.2 million view-ers, making it the network’s high-est-rated premiere for a stand-up act among young men.

Neal Tiles, president of rival network G4, which has a video clip show called Web Soup, acknowledged the format is not original. Amateurs caught in embarrassing circumstances have been fodder for TV shows including America’s Funniest Home Videos, Real People and People Do the Craziest Things, to name a few.

To make the concept resonate with the Facebook and Twitter crowd, including video game players, producers lubricated Tosh.0 with the oil of the Internet: sarcasm and ridicule.

“Today’s gamers are a slightly cynical, seen-it-all-before gen-eration,” Tiles said. Unlike their parents, TV is not their medium of choice. “We really have to go out of our way to get these guys to come to the TV set. We are doing more than asking them to simply change the channel. We are asking them to change their behavior.”

A: The leading lady in Hang ‘Em High, a 1968 Eastwood Western, was Inger Stevens, a movie and TV actress best known as the star of the TV version of The Farmer’s Daughter. She was not in 1967’s The Dirty Dozen. Stevens died in 1970.

NBC drama, which starred Boris Kodjoe and Gugu Mbatha-Rawas as married spies, was not successful enough for the network. TV Squad noted that it started with a little more than 8.5 million viewers, and had dropped to 5.45 million viewers by the time it was canceled. Production ended after 13 episodes.

I leave it to you to decide whether the mass audi-ence just did not accept a show starring an attractive, sophisticated African-American couple. It may just be that the show wasn’t that good. I tried it more than once and never got hooked.
