Once upon a time there were two monkeys, an animal of unknown kind and a wise old turtle. Now, in our time, these diverse lives have been fast-forwarded to appear in a Jacksonville State University children’s play, and their message is as up-to-date as Twitter.

The play, Two Monkeys, a Porcupine and a VERY Wise Turtle will be presented Aug. 1 and Aug. 8 at 10 a.m. at

the JSU Amphitheater. Audiences will get to meet a new student playwright and gather at a different venue, one only occasionally used on campus. The amphitheater, located at the corner of Alabama 21 and 11th Street in the lower portion of the Stone Center parking lot, is appropriate for this play because it features a small cast and minimum scenery. But there’s maximum fun both for children and adults, and plenty of food for thought.

This marks JSU senior Gatlin Alldredge’s first venture into playwrighting. The drama major is also the play’s director.

“Until five months ago, I was more of a lyricist and poet,” Alldredge said. “But now that I see my tale acted out on stage, I’d like to do more writing.”

Alldredge’s characters are unforgettable because they are symbolic, and entertaining because they are fantasy. “They actually represent the whole human race,” All-dredge explains.

In the story, a brown, stubby animal named Super (Candace Duck) meets two egotistical monkeys in the woods. Big Brother (Trey Peters), the older monkey and self-appointed ruler of the woods, proceeds to jeer at Super, assuming she’s a porcupine without quills, which confuses her. The Turtle (Leonard Malloy) intervenes to help Super, but is chased away by the bantering mon-keys. Super then begins a journey to discover whom she really is, instead of accepting the label given to her by her peers. She learns self-confidence and makes new friends along the way.

The theme is human individuality, Alldredge said. “I thought about children watching so much TV and letting TV tell them what they should be. Their parents should be telling them they can be anything they want to be, and

do anything they want to do, with real effort. Every indi-vidual is special.”

Children ages 14 and under will enjoy the show, All-dredge said. The audience is encouraged to participate in moving the plot along.

Children’s admission is $3 and adult is $2. Bringing along lawn chairs is fine, and in case of rain, the play will be relocated to room 338 inside the Stone Center to the left of the auditorium.

Jude Law to be a father; mother is unknown

LONDON — Jude Law’s spokes-woman says the actor is set to become a father for the fourth time. The identi-ty of the mother has not been revealed.

Publicist Sara Keene says that “fol-lowing a relationship last year, Jude Law has been advised by the birth mother that he is to be the father of a child due in the autumn.”

She says Law is no longer in a rela-tionship with the woman but “intends to be a fully supportive part of the child’s life.”

The Daily Mirror newspaper report-ed Thursday that Law met the woman while filming Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes movie in New York last year.

23 films vie for Venice’s Golden Lion award

ROME — Michael Moore’s exami-nation of the world’s economic crisis and the directorial debut of former Gucci designer Tom Ford are among 23 films vying for the Golden Lion at this year’s Venice Film Festival.

Organizers announced the lineup for the 66th festival on Thursday.

U.S. entries for the Sept. 2-12 show top the list with six, followed by four each for Italy and France.

Moore looks at the economic crisis in the United States with his documen-tary Capitalism: A Love Story. Ford’s movie, The Single Man, stars Colin Firth and Julianne Moore.

East German police feared 1988 Jackson concert

BERLIN — Germany’s Bild news-paper is reporting that a 1988 Michael Jackson concert in West Berlin prompted security concerns for East Germany’s secret police.

The top-selling newspaper pub-lished a message from the files of the former Stasi on Thursday. It said East German officials thought the Jackson concert in front of the Reichstag could be used to test the authorities east of the Berlin Wall.

The Stasi wanted to keep people away from East Berlin areas where they could hear Jackson’s West Berlin concert. To do that, the Stasi proposed broadcasting the show in a stadium with a two-minute time delay so any “political provocation” could be cen-sored.

The plan never took place. Instead, East German authorities staged a crackdown on Jackson fans in their ter-ritory during the concert.

Dubliners decry U2’s noisy stage removalBy SHAWN POGATCHNIK

DUBLIN — Dubliners angry over the around-the-clock dismantling of U2’s monumental concert stage mounted street protests Tuesday, threatening the Irish band’s plans for the next stop on their European tour.

Residents around Croke Park sta-dium said their aim was to embar-rass the Dublin City Council and the Gaelic Athletic Association — which

authorized two straight nights of noise — not hang up Ireland’s most famous musical export.

Several dozen residents near the stadium called off their demonstra-tions after delaying U2’s initial convoy for several hours. More than 50 trucks eventually left with the band’s instru-ments, stage, lighting and sound equipment, and massive banks of television screens, behind schedule for concerts Friday and Saturday in the Swedish city of Goteborg.

The protesters said authorities should never have granted U2 a license to dismantle its stage over a continuous 44-hour period starting at 1 a.m. Tuesday — right after the last of U2’s three Dublin concerts concluded before roaring crowds of 80,000.

Among other equipment, U2 workers were disassembling the “Claw,” a 390-ton, four-legged steel monstrosity that holds more than 150 tons of audiovisual equipment above the stage.

Mick Jones talks about Foreigner’s

NEW YORK — Mick Jones has watched classic rock bands like the Eagles, AC/DC and Journey reach new levels of popularity thanks to Wal-Mart; now he wants to get his band, Foreigner, in on the action.

“To me, the most important thing is that the band regains recognition again and proves in a way that it is a force. It’s been around for 30 years, and there are few other bands that have been around for that long,” said Jones, a founding member of the band. “I’d like to regain our position in that club.”

Foreigner is releasing a three-disc set of new and classic material in Wal-Mart Stores on Sept. 29. Can’t Slow Down will include a CD of new material, another of remixed ver-sions of Foreigner hits and another live DVD of performance footage, all for $12.

Jones says the Wal-Mart exclusive deal is the perfect way for the band — best known for hits like “Hot Blooded,” “I Want to Know What Love Is” and “Urgent” — to re-establish themselves.

“As we’ve been off the album scene for some time, we need a lot of support to get the word out,” Jones said in an interview Wednes-day. “Although we’ve played a tremendous amount of shows, a lot of the public doesn’t realize that we’re back.”

With the decline of traditional record stores and the challenge of veteran acts get-ting onto Top 40 radio stations, exclusive deals with stores like Wal-Mart have given bands such as Foreigner the media splash and advertising support that record labels used to provide.

Foreigner — which these days includes lead singer Kelly Hansen, bassist Jeff Pil-son, guitarist Tom Gimbel, keyboardist Michael Bluestein and drummer Bryan Head — worked with Aerosmith producer Marti Frederiksen as well as Jones’ stepson, Gram-my-winning producer Mark Ronson. Ronson has been a producer for Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen and others.

“We had never worked officially before — obviously when he was growing up we would jam and we would do all kinds of stuff; I knew from an early age that he had a special talent and he had the passion for music,” said Jones.

“This time, it was kind of funny. I kind of sat there and let him do all the work,” he laughed. “It was a lot of fun and he intro-duced a completely different flavor on this one track to the rest of the album”

As for the band’s new sound, Jones said it’s contemporary, but not so modern that people won’t know they are listening to Foreigner.

“We’ve kept the kind of identity I guess but in a way I guess we have brought it up to the present,” he said. “I think it stands up to any-thing that’s out there at the moment.”

NEW YORK — Most teenagers daydream about several career paths in life, but 19-year-old Kris-tinia of the R&B clan the DeBarges says there’s only one thing she ever considered doing.

“I don’t really know anything else besides singing,” said the daughter of James DeBarge, the keyboardist of the 1980s Motown group DeBarge and ex-husband of Janet Jackson.

“I had a pretty normal life, except that my family just sang a lot. So I was always in the house and I was always hearing them on the piano or the drums or the guitar, or they were writing a song. My father always took me in the studio, with him or on tour ... and after a while it just became like sec-ond nature to me,” said DeBarge (whose first name is pronounced kris-teh-NEE’-ah).

The group DeBarge — which featured five of the DeBarge sib-lings, with El as its lead singer — hit it big back in the 1980s with No. 1 hits like “Time Will Reveal”

and “Rhythm of the Night.” Their smooth grooves were given new life over the years thanks to artists like the Notorious B.I.G., 2Pac and Ashanti using the group’s melodies as the main hooks for their songs.

But instead of singing the sultry soul and R&B her family members delivered years back, DeBarge is ready to take over the pop world with her debut CD, Exposed, released this week. She’s open-ing up for the Britney Spears tour next month and her first single “Goodbye,” which samples Steam’s 1969 hit “Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye),” is a Top 40 hit on the Billboard pop chart.

The song has even drawn com-parisons to Rihanna, but DeBarge says she doesn’t mind since she is a fan of the singer.

“I love Rihanna — I think she has a lot of great music that she’s come out with,” she said.

Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, the Grammy-winning singer, songwriter and producer, signed DeBarge to his new label and over-saw the direction of her album. He also produced “Goodbye.”

Edmonds said the comely sing-

er is more than a pretty face: “She actually has a voice. She can really sing,” he said in a phone interview.

“I think when you have a fam-ily history that’s in music and that runs in their blood, sometimes what comes with that is a natural instinct in terms of performing,” he said.

Exposed finds DeBarge working as a songwriter too; she co-wrote the track “Cried Me a River” and “It’s Gotta Be Love,” which samples LL Cool J’s 1996 song, “I Need Love.”

“Of course I’m not going to be able to write all the songs on the album this time,” she said. But she added she has faith that she “can really write maybe my whole album one day.”

While DeBarge tries to carve out her own space in the musical uni-verse — like her family did almost three decades ago — she says she’s never worried that her family’s famous name will overshadow her.

“I’m more excited about it because I do have this last name and it is in my favor and I can use it to a great degree,” she said. “So I look at it more as a blessing.”

The Fiery Furnaces, I’m Going Away

The Fiery Furnaces’ I’m Going Away, for all of its quirky ballads, remains slightly hamstrung by the hipster chic. The experimental approach is fun for a while, but it gets poured on a little thick at times.

What burdens the New York-based brother-and-sister fronted act is their smarty pants deconstruction of rock ‘n’ roll. That’s fine, in theory, but quickly turns tiresome when the reconstruction goes awry.

We start out in good shape here. There’s the Delta blues influenced lyrics on I’m Going Away, with its fine jangle crusty electric guitar and quick shuffle of percussion.

Where Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger get in trouble is on the slow ballads. “The End is Near” moves from moody piano to soaring and dated guitar strains in the blink of an eye. The musicianship is there, but it’s an idea that should have been

absent here is honesty. The Fried-bergers deliver everything with the wink and the caveat that the emotions may not be real. This all may just be an experimental homage to sounds heard elsewhere. Their songs about strained relationships might have played better with fewer lo-fi smoke and mirrors and a bit more revealing of the true soul.

CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: “Star-ing At The Steeple” is an unsettling song full of cymbal crashes and devil-ish guitar work. There’s a nervous-ness conveyed by the tempo and the lyrics, but it all melds well in the end.

Brooke Hogan may know best on her reality show, but she should have known better than churn-ing out the lackluster album The Redemption. It’s all tricks, and few treats.

On most songs it’s hard to tell where the vocoder and production tricks end and Hogan’s own voice begins. This is bad, since Hogan has a perfectly fine pop music voice. But she lets the folks behind the mixing board overpower her to a fault.

Hogan comes out swinging on “Dear Mom.” “I love you. But you gotta change,” Brooke says in heart-felt fashion before launching into a talk-rap-sing tirade. It might have been a poignant touching track, and obviously self-referential given her own battles with mother Linda, but there’s so much dirty south “crunk” production going on it quickly dis-

solves into a mess of Nin-tendo-esque tones and synthesizer stabs.

The best songs here are the dance club-paced “Handcuffed” and “Strip.” The faster tempo takes Hogan away from the hackneyed hip-hop realm and into a space where her voice can soar and pro-duction tricks don’t sound so out of place.

CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: Miami rapper Stack$ helps out Hogan on “Falling,” a smooth songs track with a nice hook. Stack$ is the best of the featured artists on The Redemption, which includes cameos from Urban Mystic and Flo Rida.

Kristinia DeBarge really couldn’t have had a better head start.

The 19-year-old daughter of James DeBarge, of ’80s R&B group DeBarge, she grew up around the business and teamed up with hit-maker Babyface five years ago to start planning her debut.

Exposed is the result of all that work, featuring her light, effortless vocals tackling a lot of sweet, pretty pop — much of which was written and/or produced by Babyface. No wonder it all seems pretty inevitable.

DeBarge comes across as a streetwise Jordin Sparks with the stomping smash “Goodbye” and the new, more dance-oriented Rihanna-esque single “Sabotage.” But what really sets her apart are the first-rate ballads that she flutters across, from the lovelorn “Disconnect,” which anyone from Miley Cyrus to Whit-ney Houston would have fought to get on their albums, to the simple, quirky piano ballad “Doesn’t Every-body Want to Fall in Love” that is also destined to be a smash. She even makes the tender, almost sappy “Died in Your Eyes” work for her.

Exposed really does unveil DeBarge, who’s set to open for Brit-ney Spears this fall, as a complete

package and a music marketer’s dream — a teen-ager who can sing grown-up songs and make them feel young, and feel comfortable with everything from hip-hop to Celine Dion ballads. Her wait to break into the public eye is about to be so totally worth it.

FabolousLoso’s Way

Fabolous has always churned out hits. But Loso’s Way marks the first time the Brooklyn rapper has delivered a broader idea of who he is as an artist and a person. He’s still got the singles — both the poppy, AutoTuned “My Time” with Jeremih and the playful “Throw It in the Bag” with The-Dream are bounding up the charts — but he goes deeper when he talks of fatherhood, espe-cially “Stay,” where he raps, “I give a — — about hip-hop’s new beef, I was more excited when my son grew teeth.”

Kristinia DeBarge’s debut sets her apart

At age 24, Ashley Tisdale is the elder of the High School Musical tribe that includes Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens. On her second album, Guilty Pleasure, the now-brunet wants to forge her adulthood, but what she’s crafted is a glob of uninspired pop-rock that aspires to be Pink but is really something paler.

The problem might lie with Tis-dale’s chosen path of independence; the showbiz prodigy now fancies her-self a bad girl. That takes more for-titude than can be mustered by this wan batch of songs co-produced and written (with Tisdale’s contributions) with an all-star team that includes Kara DioGuardi and Toby Gad.

On “Hot Mess,” which begins with some promising Andy Sum-mers-style guitar, Tisdale claims to have no inhibitions, but the song’s self-conscious attempts to whip up

a frenzy of naughtiness prove other-wise. “I’m getting speed tickets; I’m acting just like a misfit; I’m letting my mail pile up to the ceiling.”

At another point, she sings, “you wake up in your bra and makeup” as if it’s a scandal that’ll blow apart her locked diary. Hey, maybe the same thing has happened to Condoleezza Rice after a hard day’s night of nail-ing a Rachmaninoff sonata.

“How Do You Love Someone” could have been an affecting portrait of broken marriage from a child’s perspective, but it takes the easy way out with cringe-inducing stereotypes.

There are a few glimmers of hope; Tisdale has said her heroes are Pat Benatar and Kelly Clarkson. But to succeed in the crowded hallways of teen pop, she’ll have to be as fear-less a misfit as those two bad girls — and not feel guilty about it in the morning.

Tisdale’s album is uninspired

Neither funny nor about actual people, Funny People finds writer-director-producer Judd Apatow (The Forty Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up) descending so far into his navel that he’s going to need a search party to dig him out.

This shapeless, interminable movie purports to explore life among the stand-up comedian set, both the hyper-competitive strivers who yearn to be the next Jerry Seinfeld, and the ones who have found international fame. But Apatow can’t decide if he’s trying to celebrate these characters or vilify them, and he allows the movie to dribble from one shapeless scene into the next. By the time he serves up a home video of his real-life daughter singing “Memory” from Cats, nearly two hours in into a 2 1/2-hour film, you want to crawl beneath your chair and hide.

George Simmons (Adam Sandler) is a former stand-up turned wildly popu-lar movie star, who at the start of the film is diagnosed with a form of leuke-mia. Too late for chemo, the doctor’s suggest an aggressive experimental

treatment that only works for eight percent of the patients. Meanwhile, Ira Wright (Seth Rogen) is a struggling young comedian, increasingly frustrat-ed by the success of his roommates, a rising sitcom star (Jason Schwartz-man) and a fellow stand-up (Jonah Hill). When the lonely George spies Ira’s act at a comedy club, he decides to offer him a job as his assistant.

Based on the glimpses we see of his movies — idiotic man-child com-

edies that are exaggerated parodies of Sandler’s own work — Apatow doesn’t seem to have a very high opinion of George’s talents. Nor is the portrait of Ira and his friends especially gener-ous: Each of them betrays the other in an attempt to gain either some pro-fessional or personal advantage. Yet Apatow doesn’t have the backbone for vicious satire, either. He clearly wants us to like these characters and root for them.

So instead of a corrosive portrait of modern celebrity and the posers who yearn for it, we get a confusingly bitter cocktail — a cross between a James L. Brooks dramedy and The Aristocrats. This being a Judd Apatow production, we also endure long stretches dur-ing which the characters talk like no known human beings, tossing off end-less one-liners and insults about the size of each other’s genitalia.

More than halfway along, the movie takes an aggressive, if not especially interesting turn: Desperate to recon-nect with his former girlfriend Laura (Leslie Mann, Apatow’s real-life wife), George and Ira travel to her home in Marin County, where she has two daughters (played by Apatow’s own daughters, Iris and Maude) and is mar-ried to a philandering Australian-born businessman (Eric Bana).

George is an intriguing creation, a comic who obviously thrives on his self-hatred, but Sandler doesn’t have the dramatic chops to bring him alive. Rogen never gets a handle on his char-acter, who at times seems incredibly intelligent and at others just comes off as a pre-adolescent jerk. The rest of the cast pretty much goes wasted in a movie that ultimately seems to be about Apatow’s own anxieties about the dark side of becoming wildly suc-cessful — and, I presume, having to sacrifice his family for work. (Or at least that’s the only explanation I could come up with for the presence of that Cats home video.)

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Director Marc Webb knew the only way his non-love story (500) Days of Summer would work would be if he found the perfect pair of actors for the complicated boy-meets-girl tale.

First, he needed an actress to play the film’s “manic pixie dream girl” — someone vul-nerable enough for the audi-ence to love, but strong enough to endure the consequences of her honest approach to life. He cast Zooey Deschanel.

Then, he needed the right guy. He turned to Joseph Gor-

don-Levitt to play Tom, an ide-alist who falls insanely in love with Summer (Deschanel). Tom has trouble dealing with Summer’s honesty that their relationship is never going to be serious.

“In a movie like this, you have to cast a dynamic. You have to cast a chemistry. You can’t cast them individually,” Webb says.

Webb met with a lot of actors before finding just the right sparks with Deschanel and Gordon-Levitt.

The chemistry between Gordon-Levitt and Deschanel is obvious when they meet for an interview about the movie. They go from finishing each other’s sentences to picking

on each other like a couple who have been together long enough to find great comfort together.

Even something as simple as Deschanel talking about how she is either dressed in blue or near a blue wall in almost every scene of the film triggers a slightly loving, slight-ly sarcastic comment from Gordon-Levitt.

“The color palette was designed around the blue eyes of Zooey,” Gordon-Levitt says with a smile.

Deschanel flashes a smile back at him and, with the same slight amount of sarcasm, says, “He makes me blush.”

If (500) Days of Summer had been a standard romantic

comedy, Weber could have cast any of dozens of young Hollywood actors. Because the movie is a more complicated coming-of-age story, masquer-ading as a romantic comedy, he needed actors who could handle both the light and dark material in the script.

Gordon-Levitt might be best known for the TV com-edy 3rd Rock from the Sun, but he earned raves for his dramatic performance in the film The Lookout. Deschanel’s no stranger to smart material, having built a solid career with independent movies such as Gigantic, Raving and Winter Passing.

Those jobs came to Descha-nel; she never goes after a part.

To the actress, a role never works if you try to force the connection. She just knows what feels right.

When she was sent the script for (500) Days of Sum-mer she initially passed until the script was rewritten to flesh out Summer. Once cast, Deschanel discovered she could relate to both characters.

“They sort of represent two sides of our generation’s ambivalence toward love and romance and its place in our society and in our everyday lives ...,” Deschanel says before Gordon-Levitt jumps in to add, “... because everyone has been a Tom as some point and everybody has been a Summer at one point.”

LOS ANGELES — Bryce Dallas Howard is taking over as the villainous vampire Victoria in the third Twilight movie, and the actress who’s

played the part in the first two films says she was “stunned” and “hurt deeply” by the switch.

Rachelle Lefevre says she was unaware that Sum-mit Entertainment, which is releasing the vampire saga, had chosen someone else to play her part in Eclipse. Sum-mit announced Howard as her replacement late Tuesday, saying Lefevre had scheduling conflicts that would make her

unable to participate in the production.But Lefevre said Wednesday that she was “fully

committed” to returning as Victoria. She says her involvement in the drama Barney’s Version, star-ring Paul Giamatti and Dustin Hoffman, would only last 10 days.

“I turned down several other film opportu-nities and, in accordance with my contractual rights, accepted only roles that would involve very short shooting schedules,” she said in a lengthy statement.

“Although the production schedule for Eclipse is over three months long, Summit said they had a conflict during those 10 days and would not accommodate me. Given the length of filming for Eclipse, never did I fathom I would lose the role

over a 10-day overlap.”Summit says Lefevre didn’t inform the studio

she would be shooting Barney’s Version — which will require her to be in Europe during rehearsal and at least 10 days of principal photography on Eclipse — until July 20, even though she reported-ly signed onto the project in early June. The stu-dio says it made her representatives aware several days ago that taking part in Barney’s Version could place her Eclipse job status in jeopardy.

“Contrary to Ms. Lefevre’s statement, it is simply untrue that the studio dismissed her over a 10-day overlap,” Summit said in its own state-ment Wednesday night. “It is not about a 10-day overlap, but instead about the fact that The Twi-light Saga: Eclipse is an ensemble production that has to accommodate the schedules of numerous actors while respecting the established creative vision of the filmmaker and most importantly the story.”

The news shook up the fervent fans of the Twi-light series: Several are circulating online peti-tions urging that she return, and the top-trending topic on Twitter for a while Wednesday afternoon was “Bring Back Rachelle.”

Eclipse, based on the third book in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight saga, is scheduled to begin shooting in Vancouver in August. Part two, New Moon, comes out Nov. 20.

Howard, while a newcomer to the Twilight franchise, is no stranger to blockbusters, having co-starred in Spider-Man 3 and Terminator Salva-tion. She also appeared in The Village and Lady in the Water.

When Kim Dobbs left Anniston, she never had a mind to return anytime soon. She had things to do, places to go, people to see. She explored theater, which she’d grown to love with great passion. Theater meant everything to her, and she’d travel up to New York City, back down to Atlanta and to wherever it took her just so long as she could walk out on that stage and enter-tain folks in front of her.

Shortly after Dobbs left, Anniston developed the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. Her hometown saw a cultural boom almost as soon as she hit the road. When she returned home years later to see about some family matters, that festival was gone, and in order to bolster the theater community once again, she and other enthusiasts would start from the ground up.

Now she’s Community Actors Stu-dio Theater’s full-time artistic direc-tor and puts on several intricately designed, cast and choreographed shows per year in a town she’s more than happy to entertain. She talked to

The Star about CAST’s Kool Kids, what she learned on her journeys to big-ger cities and what advice she’d give a teenager with big artistic ambitions.

What did your travels to New York and Atlanta teach you about theater?

It taught me that it’s a universal art form. It’s a way to communicate with all kinds of people in all kinds of ways. Theater can communicate in different ways. You’ve got your musical format, you’ve got your kinetic format and you’ve got your tragic format. Basical-ly, what you have is live people reach-ing out to live people, which is a differ-ent kind of format from film and TV.

What’s next for CAST?We’re currently casting Annie Get

Your Gun, which runs in September. After that, we’re doing Moon Over Buf-falo, which is a raucous comedy. After that, we’re doing Southern Hospitality, which is a Southern comedy. And we’ll see how we’re doing after that before we determine what we’re doing for our fourth show. Finances are an issue.

When did you make the decision

to stay in Anniston?I moved back here to help my dad

out after my mom died. After my dad died, I was looking into San Diego and Fort Lauderdale, and then I thought, “Well, why would I be moving,” and I said, “To find a theater and an audi-ence.” Then I realized I have that here already, so I bought a house and decided to stay and capitalize on what I’d already built. I’m hoping that was the right decision. I guess we’ll find out soon enough. (laughs)

What kind of a difference has CAST made in your life as an artist and an educator?

It has taken me back to my roots. I never thought I would ever go back to my roots, so it was a surprise to me that I’m here. A big surprise to me and everybody who knew me. The difference that it’s made is that it’s con-nected me to the people who treasure my art. Before, I was not connected to my audience because I would arrive at noon, set up, do the show, load out and off to the next city. While I was connected to my audience at the little soiree after the show, people I had just

met. It’s not the same as here where I

know the people and after the show I’ll walk down the street and my audience comes up and says, “That was a great show I saw on Saturday night.” I’m in my public’s eye now where I wasn’t before. I used to enjoy the anonym-ity of it all. But now there is no more anonymity. It’s a different connec-tion when I see the people who see my work. People are very gracious in their praise. I used to get reviews in the paper. Now I get reviews in the grocery store. It’s a little different.

What does a program like Kool Kids represent in terms of spreading awareness of the importance of per-forming arts?

These kids probably would not see theater. I’m not saying definitely would not, but probably would not. It’s probably not a part of what their lives would have encompassed. The fact that they not only see it now, but they participate in it, and then they talk about it to other folks that they’re con-nected with that I’m not necessarily connected with. So it expands not only

to the Kool Kids, but to their connections, which I hope will be huge. I hope these kids get inspired to spread the word of how wonderful the art of theater can be and how that art can continue to connect to their aunt, their cousin, their preacher, their teacher and their neighbor. I look at it as a ripple that spreads in the sea of theater.

How do you feel about Calhoun County’s thirst for the arts?

I feel like there is an audience out there that loves it, and there’s an audience out there that needs to experi-ence it. I feel that once an audience comes in and expe-riences it, I’d say about 90 percent of people that come in want to come back, or maybe even 95 percent. I’m feeling that I just need to continue spreading the word because it sells itself. I hope that will continue because that is my life as well as my livelihood. I need my audi-ence, and I need my audience to be glad to be there.

Why do you think young artists have the itch to leave their small hometowns and embark on journeys to larger cities with bigger audiences?

I think that’s a normal human condition to want to explore what’s out there beyond your own area, your own boundaries that are set up geographically in our lives. I think it’s a normal thing for folks to want to go beyond what they’ve experienced. I think that young artists, or I as a young artist, just want to see what’s out there. When you experience your world that contributes to the art that you’re exploring, you have more to draw from. The more experiences you have, the more you expand your horizons, the more you have to draw from in order to express your art.

What would you tell an 18-year-old who was con-templating leaving this area because of his or her dis-satisfaction with the cultural arts scene?

I would encourage them to follow their heart. That’s what I always encourage artists to do. You don’t know what your particular journey is intended to be, so you have to follow your own heart to find out where you’re supposed to go and gather your experience that you can draw from in order to express your art to your audience. So yes, I do encourage people to leave. But I encourage them to come back, too, if that is where their heart is sending them. That’s what I did, and that’s what worked for me.

How had the arts scene changed from before you left Anniston to when you returned?

I left just before the Alabama Shakespeare Festival got started, so there was a big art explosion in essence going on in my hometown while I was gone. But then when I came back, what I found was the festival was gone.

What can Calhoun County do to improve as a cul-tural center in the state of Alabama and in the South-east?

They can support it. That’s my mantra. That’s what I put on everything to say every time I’m on stage is, “Thank you for supporting live theater in our commu-nity.” They can go see a show, they can sign a nephew up to learn how to sing or dance or be a member of Young Artists for a Better World. They can get involved. Come to the Randy awards. Join the board of directors. They can give money. That’s a big thing. Keeping the arts going requires money. People are astounded that we’re surviving here with as little money as we have coming in. I like to say I do beauty on a budget. It does require some money. I think that right now is a crucial time for us, and I imagine all arts groups. Will we survive next season? That’s the question we’re asking. In order to survive, we have to have folks come buy tickets and buy ads and give donations. All of that is crucial for us to do what we do. I can do a lot on nothing, but I can’t do everything on nothing.

NEW YORK — Goodbye, Dolly.9 to 5: The Musical, the Broadway

show that features a score by country superstar Dolly Parton, will close Labor Day weekend after a disappointing four-month run, its producers announced Wednesday.

The musical will have played 148 performances when it closes Sept. 6 at the Marquis Theatre.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better experience on my first Broadway show,” Parton said. “I’ve had the privilege of working with an amazing group of peo-ple who have become like family to me.”

A national tour is expected to start in September 2010 at the Tennessee Per-forming Arts Center in Nashville.

9 to 5 is based on the 1980 film and stars Allison Janney, Stephanie J. Block and Megan Hilty as three female office workers who plot against their sexist boss, played by Marc Kudisch. Parton, Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda and Dabney Coleman were featured in the movie.

The show’s weekly grosses have drift-ed downward during the prime summer tourist season, usually a good time for musicals. Last week, for example, 9 to 5 grossed $694,650, less than 50 percent of the gross potential at the Marquis.

9 to 5 most likely will lose most of its production costs, which have not been disclosed by its producers.

Yet Parton was optimistic about the future of 9 to 5.

“I can’t wait for this show to hit the road so people across the country can see why I’m so proud of everyone involved,” she said. “And I’m so pleased that we’ll be opening the tour in Nash-ville. Great things happen in Nashville.”

New ‘Futurama’ will alienate fans if deal isn’t done

Imagine if all the voices of The Simpsons were recast with different actors. If you’re a fan, you’d be pretty ticked off, right? What is the show without all of those talented voices

behind them?Well, buckle

your seat belts, kids. It looks like the next voyage of the Planet Express Ship will leave the voice actors of Futurama behind. Comedy Central plans to air new episodes of the sci-fi inspired

cartoon series, but, according to published reports, the studio is balking at the salary demands of the actors. Variety.com reports they want around $75,000 an episode. The budget for the show is smaller, and producer 20th Century Fox has announced it is seeking new voice actors.

Consider the impact: Billy West voices Phillip J. Fry, Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth, Dr. John A. Zoidberg (one of the best) and Zapp Bran-nigan (my personal favorite.) That’s the equivalent of removing Dan Castellaneta from The Simpsons. In addition to Homer, he voices count-less other characters. If that were to happen, there’d be really no point in watching the show.

Times are tough, but is there any-

one who thinks 20th Century Fox is hurting for money? The company has other high-profile deals with actors. The principle actors on The Simpsons make $400,000 an episode, according to BBC News.

No, Futurama is not The Simp-sons, but they do have the same cre-ator, Matt Groening. It’s just hard to imagine the show without the actors that made it so endearing.

I cannot think of a more profound display of disrespect to the fans of Futurama. I, for one, won’t waste my time with such foolishness.

Word to the wise: Either pay these performers what they’re worth (which is in my opinion far more than $75,000 an episode) or get busy cranking out the next Family Guy spin-off. All fans of this show should boycott any Futurama episode aired without these great actors.

‘NCAA Football 10’By this time of year, college foot-

ball fans are so desperate they’re liable to hook the next “NCAA Foot-ball” directly into their veins. EA Sports is the supplier and, like clock-work, they crank out these games in the dead of summer. The PlayStation 3 version of “NCAA Football 10” car-ries a real sting for Alabama fans; the cover features the quarterback for the University of Utah. Ahh, the pain! The suffering!

Anywho, this game has become

an annual event with a fading stay-ing power. The price is jacked up, the rewards are fleeting and the game play doesn’t differ much from previ-ous versions.

The Season Showdown mode allows players from different schools to compete online for prestige. The game also adds sideline reporter Erin Andrews. The graphics on the game aren’t a drastic improvement over prior versions, though anything on the newer systems look nice.

I find my team, Alabama, can’t overcome the dumb-luck factor even though it has a highly rated offense and defense. Army returned my missed field goal for a touchdown? Really? Mississippi State ran my kick-off back for a touchdown twice in a row? Are you kidding me? Try as I may, I can’t seem to get any offense going. When you’re playing online against USC and they’re up by four touchdowns at the half, you know it’s time to bow out.

The nice thing about that is the network looks for other players to replace you so the bloodbath can continue without you. This game will surely please college football addicts, who can’t get enough (me). I just can’t escape the feeling that EA puts a minimal amount of effort into these games because they know most of us will pay for it, regardless. “NCAA Football 10” gets three-and-one-half buttons out of five.

TOKYO — Japanese video game and console maker Nintendo Co. reports fiscal first quarter earnings on Thursday. The following is a summary of key develop-ments and analyst opinion related to the period.

OVERVIEW: Nintendo has weathered the global recession in relatively good shape, and as President Satoru Iwata often says, his company is more resilient than most during economic downturns.

Still, the Kyoto-based maker of Pokemon and Super Mario games is feeling the squeeze from slumping con-sumer demand and intensifying competition from rivals Sony Corp. and Microsoft Corp. Sales of the Wii game console and DS handheld device are down sharply from last year.

In June sales of game hardware, software and accesso-ries plunged 31 percent from the same month last year to $1.17 billion, according to market researcher NPD Group. It was the largest year-over-year decline the industry has seen in nearly nine years.

Nintendo also faces concerns about competition after

last month’s Electronic Entertainment Expo, where both Sony and Microsoft unveiled prototype motion-control devices for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Nintendo’s Wii was the first console to employ a motion-detecting con-troller when it debuted in 2006.

Nintendo showcased the Wii MotionPlus, an attach-ment that uses sensors to more precisely mimic gamers’ hand movements on screen. The only new apparatus it debuted this year was the Wii Vitality Sensor, which can check a player’s pulse. That prompted some to wonder if Nintendo had run out of ideas.

BY THE NUMBERS: Nintendo continues to be bullish about the future, forecasting a 7.5 percent rise in net profit to 300 billion yen for the fiscal year through March 2010. But it expects sales to edge down 2.1 percent to 1.8 trillion yen, and operating profit to drop 11.8 percent to 490 bil-lion yen.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters, on average, expect fiscal year profit of 317.9 billion yen.

Nintendo expects to sell 26 million more Wii machines in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2010, and 30 million more DS machines, including some of the revamped DSi handsets.

In the old days people would scrape together their nickels and dimes to visit the circus or carnival when it blew into town. Boasting a dizzying array of won-ders, one of the prime attractions of this rural Baby-lon was the side show.

The side show featured all kinds of what P.T. Bar-num called “human curiosities” — the freaks and geeks of the 19th century — the Fat Lady, the Strong Man, the Dog-faced boy, the diminutive Dwarf.

Well, step right up, ladies and gentlemen, all that grandeur is still here in the form of TV’s reality shows, and it doesn’t cost one thin dime.

The fat lady has been remastered as Ruby, The Biggest Loser, Dance Your Ass Off. The strong man is alive and well on Raw, SmackDown, Wipeout, Ameri-can Gladiators.

Of course, when P.T. Barnum turned tiny Charles Sherwood Stratton into Tom Thumb, the most famous little person in the world, he had no idea that 21st century America would follow his lead with The Little Couple and Little People, Big World.

The Tattooed Man had yokels gasping at the intri-cate designs on his body. Now we elicit the same fas-cination with Tattoo Highway, LA Ink and Miami Ink.

Hucksters were exploiting children a long time before we got into the act. At the 1915 World’s Fair live babies were on display to demonstrate a new-fangled contraption called the incubator.

But we’ve taken child exploitation to a whole new level with reality shows like Table for 12, 18 Kids and Counting, Raising Sextuplets, Supernanny and the sovereign leaders of grasping parents, Jon & Kate Plus 8. For some reason viewers seem entranced with screaming rug rats vying for attention — which is hard to get when you have enough siblings to make up a basketball team.

The champion of multiple births, Nadya Suleman (“Octomom”), recently signed on the dotted line for a couple of documentaries on her ill-gotten brood, declaring she doesn’t want to profit from her kids.

We’ve learned recently how “real” these reality shows are, as the marriage of Jon and Kate Gosselin collapsed, they both insisted they intend to continue the family show (and those juicy paychecks).

Two years ago when CBS boosted Kid Nation on an unsuspecting public — where kids were left unsu-pervised for 40 days in an abandoned town to form a “society” — wasn’t anyone thinking Lord of the Flies?

A series like Toddlers & Tiaras offers an interesting perspective on child exploitation. It’s a show about hysterically zealous mothers pushing and primp-ing their young daughters into strutting their stuff like burlesque queens in hot pursuit of trophies or prizes. It’s a reality show exploiting children ABOUT the most egregious exploitation of children you can imagine.

The Snake-Oil Salesman, who set up his wagon at the circus and sold elixirs that cured everything that ails you, is still with us. Chillblains, the ague, nose-bleeds, women’s complaints, sore muscles, weak livers, shingles and constipation — all were eased by this tiny bottle of perfection.

We have our snake-oil salesmen of today, only they concentrate on mental health instead of the physical. One tart scolding from Dr. Phil and you will no longer cheat on your wife. A short stay at Dr.

Drew’s plush Pasadena rehab center will stop your alcohol dependency and one tear-stained “Interven-tion” (and 28 days away from the family) will cure your meth addiction.

Still, we treasure shows today that never would have occurred to P.T. Barnum. We watch a whole cat-egory of wealthy, superficial, egocentric women from The Real Housewives of New York, Orange County, New Jersey, Atlanta ... wherever. There’s the spiritu-ally challenged Kimora from Life in the Fast Lane, and the Kardashian clan, who think, somehow, we all want to keep up with them.

Rock stars Ozzie Osbourne and Gene Simmons capitalize on their fame to propel their own reality shows about their families. Though Ozzie is barely coherent, his wife, Sharon, never misses an opportu-nity to seize the limelight.

We follow the uncouth Dog the Bounty Hunter, who dresses like an S&M master and hunts down weak-willed folk who’ve skipped bail. We watch men who repossess cars, cranky hucksters who flip hous-es, teams who clean messy houses, pudgy match-makers who hook up millionaires, plastic surgeons who implant double Ds and meter maids who pass out parking tickets. Barnum never had it so good.

eight clothing designers from Project Runway for a designer face-off on Aug. 20. Designers from past shows will meet to compete in a two-hour special on Project Runway’s new home, Lifetime. Returning will be Chris March, Daniel Vosovic, Santino Rice, Sweet P, Korto Momolu, Uli Herzner, Jeffrey Sebelia and Mychael Knight. Of those, only Sebelia actually won first place on the show. This is a good thing, because the best designers never win on Project Runway. It’s always the designer who creates the most outlandish outfits, couture that even Bette Midler wouldn’t be caught dead in. Maybe these will do better.

Joely Richardson, the younger sister of the late Natasha Richardson, will be starring as Catherine Parr, Henry VIII’s last wife, in the final season of The Tudors, premiering next year on Showtime. Richard-son, who comes from a long line of actors and direc-tors, says she and her sister were very different.

“My sister was a real homebody and she liked cooking and watching television and I was more a tomboy. I liked climbing trees and that sort of thing. We were so different that we weren’t competitive with each other at all. When we both went into act-ing our lives were so different I think we had different strengths and weaknesses so I wouldn’t say we were competitive.”

imagine all the wonders that word conjures up in your mind’s eye. In your soul. In your imagination. In fact, why don’t you Imagine greater?

(And, please, keep a lid on the backward-looking, grammar-fetishist part of your mind that might object: “Imagine greater what?”)

This is the sort of nonsense being sold by corporate suits at the Sci-Fi Channel, which on July 7 changed its name to Syfy.

First, let’s get something straight: I love Sci-Fi’s (or Syfy’s) shows. The cabler is one of the few places that value creative programming.

But after two weeks, I still can’t stand the meaningless name, and I cringe whenever I hear “Imagine greater.” (And, yes, I can’t help but ask each time: “Greater what?”)

It’s all straight out of a Monty Python skit: The change (in name) hides the fact that there’s been no change in content.

As Syfy president Dave Howe tells the latest issue of Channel Guide magazine, “There isn’t going to be much of a major programming over-haul at all.”

Um ... OK! Right! Sorry to ask, but, why rebrand at all?

“What the new brand does is make more sense of what we’ve already been doing,” says Howe, who clearly belongs to the Stop Making Sense school of linguistics.

If Howe worries that people who see the old label will expect “space-based ... traditional ... kind of sci-fi,” then why change it to a word pronounced exactly the same? (I say tomahto, you say ... tymyty?)

Syfy “gives us a point of view on the genre,” Howe says — as in the view from no-where, no-thing, and no-sense. “It gives us an attitude, it gives us a personality.” (I’ve always thought chimeras had great personalities, too.)

So how does Howe

describe Syfy’s fare? “We’re going to occupy the broad landscape of sci-fi fantasy.” Yep, he said sci-fi.

For the record, Sci-Fi always has offered a broad range of shows.

Howe contends that the change will attract more con-sumers.

It’s a simple logic: The new name and slogan are mean-ingless and empty, and so they’re malleable enough to fit any product, including, say, presidential candidates.

Syfy’s move is another tiny step in an ongoing revolution to remake our entire world in the name of consumerism.

When every possible product, including art, must appeal to every possible per-son, and every idea must be understood by everyone, then anything that is different is mashed down into the same bland porridge.

Unlike new terms from the worlds of science, rock and hip-hop music, or street cul-ture, which expand language, rebranding impoverishes culture.

It also reveals the empti-

ness of what passes for inno-vation in today’s corporate world. It seems that unless CEOs fiddle with their prod-ucts on a regular basis, they’ll be accused of ineffectiveness.

And what better way to look busy than change labels? It’s a sylly shell game. A trick to pacyfy stockholders and vyewers. And it amounts to little more than stringing together a bunch of buzz-words: rebranding, reposi-tioning, forward-looking, and that recent standby, synergy. (Now, that’s an idea! How’s the Synergy Channel? Sci-Fi-Ergy? SyFynergy?)

You don’t need a semioti-cian or a synergistic Bard to tell you this all amounts to “a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.”
