• Anna-Lou Leibovitz was born on October 2 1949 in Waterbury, Conneticut

• She had six siblings • During her childhood her family moved often because

her father’s military career• She said that “Looking at the world through a car

window, as she points out, is not unlike looking at it through the frame of a camera”

• She took her first photographs while living in the Philippines with her family

• Through a surrogate mother she has 3 daughters Sarah (b.2001), and twins Susan and Sammuelle (b.2005)

• She has claimed that Susan Sontag and her were “lovers,” and they had a decade long relationship This

was after Sontag died in 2004 and there has never been any comments from her estate to confirm or deny Annie’s

claim• She currently lives in New York City

• In recent years she has had financial problems and has had to take out loans and put the rights of her pictures in

jeopardy to repay them she has recently sorted out her finances and has reclaimed her rights to the photos

• In the 1970’s she was the chief photographer for Rolling Stone

magazine• Thanks to this she had made friendships with most of the artists

that she photographed• She also made many notable

connections that would be useful for the rest of her career

• By 1983 she had taken 143 magazine covers

• Eventually she began making album covers including Cyndi Lauper’s

• On December 8 1980 John Lennon and Yoko Ono were

photographed for an upcoming Rolling Stone cover story about their new album Double Fantasy

• At least 4 well known photos were taken during the shoot

• These were some of the last pictures taken of John Lennon, he was shot that night when he

arrived home• The pictures were published in

Rolling Stone within the month for a tribute issue

• Annie became a photographer for Vanity Fair in 1983 and is still

working there today• During her time at Vanity

fair she has taken numerous controversial

pictures• She usually photographs

the “Hollywood class” pictures for Vanity Fair which usually features many up and coming

young celebrities

• In 1991 Demi Moore was photographed for a cover

story in Vanity Fair magazine

• She was months 7 pregnant with her daughter Scout

• Picture was controversial and has been copied and parodied since then many

2008 MILEY CYRUS

• In 2008 Annie Leibovitz photographed Miley Cyrus for a Vanity Fair cover story

• This picture caused a commotion because Cyrus was only 16 years old at the time and also was the first time that she did anything against her “Disney” image

• Leibovitz and Vanity Fair both were accused of “exploiting a minor for

magazine sales” by Cyrus’ parents and Disney

• Leibovitz later stated that Miley helped create the ideas for the pictures and her parents and/or handlers were there and they saw and approved of the finished

pictures

• Other than magazine covers she has taken

pictures of models and clothing for many

different companies such as Gap

• She has created ad’s for American Express and the

Dairy Farmer’s Association’s Got Milk?

Campaign• She has also taken numerous cover photos

for Vogue magazine• In 2007 to celebrate the

Queen’s visit to the US she was chosen to take pictures of the Queen

• She was one of the first famous female photographers

• Along with making herself famous she has helped

create media and fame for other women

• With some of her more contriversal pictures (Demi Moore, Miley

Cyrus, Cyndi Lauper) she has changed and

challenged what society finds acceptable

• Most of her well known pictures have been of

women
