Learning objectives

At the end of this topic, you will be able to:

Define the meaning of modifiers. List down 10 common types of modifiers. Apply some common types of modifiers to modify object

shapes.

Modifiers

Modifiers are tools or function available in 3ds Studio Max, that provides us with a way to sculpt and edit objects.

It can change the geometry of an object, and its properties.

Generally, it can be classes into 2 types that is Geometry modifiers and Shape modifiers.

However, in todays 3ds Studio Max, both of it have combined in together in one list.

What is modifiers?

The 10 common types of modifiers that usually used are:

1. Bend

2. Bevel

3. Twist

4. Taper

5. Skew

6. Wave

7. Ripple

8. Noise

9. Extrude

10. Lathe

Common types of Modifiers

Page 5: Animation Slide 8

Common types of Modifiers1- Bend

• Provide a uniform bend in a selected object.

• The bend angle, direction and axis can be changed.

2- Bevel

• Extrudes shapes into 3D objects and applies a flat or round bevel to the edges.

• Creating text and logos.

Page 6: Animation Slide 8

Common types of Modifiers3- Bend

• Produce a twirling effect in an object’s geometry.

4- Taper

• Produces a tapered contour by scaling both ends of an object’s geometry.

• One end is scaled up, and the other is scaled down.

Page 7: Animation Slide 8

Common types of Modifiers5- Skew

• Produce a uniform offset in an object’s geometry.

• Direction of the skew can be control on any of 3 axes.

6- Wave

• Applies a wave effect to an object.

• There are two amplitudes which work to control the vertical heights of the wave.

Common types of Modifiers7- Ripple

• Produce a ripple effect over the surface on the object.

8- Noise

• Modulates the position of an object’s vertices along any combination of the three axes.

Page 9: Animation Slide 8

Common types of Modifiers9- Extrude

• Creates a 3D object from a selected shape by setting the amount (thickness) value.

10- Lathe

• Creates a 3D object from a selected shape by revolving the shape around a selected direction axis.
