What is a service animal?• A service animal is a trained animal

that provides a service to a person in need.

• They guide people, alert people, and help people do things like, picking things up or opening doors.

• They come in all breeds, shapes and sizes.

• They are not just pets.

What is a therapy animal?• An animal that has a good

personality

• An animal that likes to visit with people and gets along with other animals

• An animal that can be a pet.

• An animal that is used to help make people feel better and be happy

What types of service or therapy animals are there?

• Dogs• Cats

• Monkeys• Miniature horses

• Ducks• Parrots / Birds

• Pigs• Basically any animal that can be trained and can help

people!

What types of service or therapy dogs are there?

• Guide Dogs• These are known as seeing eye dogs• They help people who are visually impaired• They help a person avoid danger

• Guard Dogs• They are trained to alert people of danger• They keep an area safe

• Therapy Dogs• They are kind and patient dogs• They help children with disabilities

• Police Dogs• They help the police do their jobs• They keep our communities safe

How should we treat animals that we encounter?

• If you do not know an animal…• Do not touch it• Do not pet it• Try to stay away from it

• If the animal is a service animal…• It is a specially trained animal, do not pet it.• Try to be respectful of the space and work the service animal

does.

• If the animal is a therapy animal or a pet of someone you know…• Pet it and show lots of love to it!• Be nice and careful• Do not play too rough with the animal

What can we do to help service or therapy animals?

• You can volunteer in an animal shelter.

• You can collect items that animal shelters need and donate them to a shelter.

• You can raise money to donate to animal shelters.

• With the help of your parents and an animal shelter, you can foster homeless animals in your home until a permanent home is found.

• You can adopt a homeless animal from a shelter.
