Box 2675, Acton, MA 01720-6675 Tel. 617-731-7267 www.animalumbrella.org ounded in 1985, Animal Umbrella is a statewide, volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, spay/neuter and adoption and overall welfare of even the most unadoptable abandoned cats and kittens. Over the years we have evolved from a small rescue group to one of the largest no kill organizations in New England. We have rescued spayed/neutered and found homes for thousands of homeless cats, many from desperate situations. We have also educated people on animal welfare issues, networked with other humane organizations and consulted with animal lovers on cat-related health and behavioral problems. We have placed many animals in foster homes to save them from certain death. We have socialized many feral cats and placed cats considered totally unadoptable by other humane organizations. Our shelter is also a sanctuary for unwanted cats, which have not yet found a home. They are free and live comfortably. We are strictly a no kill organization. We would like to share with you a few of the rescue/adoption stories which have occurred during the last several years. It was very hard to choose among so many compelling life saving stories. Our commitment and compassion towards abandoned animals remains strong. Please continue to support our work and THANK YOU FOR YOUR LOYALTY AND GENEROSITY! Come to Celebrate Animal Umbrellas 20th Anniversary on Saturday, October 1st from 2:00pm to 5:00pm at our shelter located at 320B Charger Street, Revere. The shelter will be open for visitors, cat adoption and sale of handcrafted gifts for people and pets. Refreshments will be served! See you there! SPENCER - Saved by JuneJacoby is now living a great life

In Memory of June JacobyAbandoned cats and kittens of Massachusetts have lost another very dear and caring friend. June Jacoby, an animal lover andsupporter of Animal Umbrella died recently. Terminally ill, June tried to cling to life as long as possible to remain with her lovedones. She fought till the end.

We are terribly saddened by this loss because June was such a caring and kind person towards animals. For years, she fed starving stray catsand saved many of them from death. She often fought her neighbors in Stoneham who wanted her to stop feeding. June ignoredthem and continued to save animals and take care of abandoned cats without fear.

She took in several feral cats from her yard and was able to socialize them and adopted them herself. They lived a wonderful life withher as they were loved and cared for. To help other strays, she placed many cat houses throughout her yard so they could be repairedfrom the elements and remain warm during the cold months. She would get up early every morning and feed the cats inside herhouse and those outside waiting patiently for food so that they could survive.

Our volunteer Justine helped June over the years with severalrescues and adopted herself a few of June’s strays. The cats sheadopted are still with her and doing well. We are grateful to Justinefor her help.

We will remember June fondly and have decided to find a homefor her cats both inside and the few left outside. We would like toexpress our sincere condolences to her son Blake and daughterLanise for their loss. We would like to thank them for theirgenerous donations and for requesting that additional donations besent to Animal Umbrella in lieu of flowers. Thank you for helping uscontinue to save abandoned animals.

We are sharing below a story of one the many cats June rescued.

It was an early hot summer morning. June called me and asked ifI would help a poor stray laying in her yard. He was very sick andnot eating. He could not stand up. I recommended she wouldtake him to a vet I knew in the area as soon as possible. She didnot have a car and took a taxi. In the meantime, I called thehospital and since they did not have an account with AnimalUmbrella, I gave them my personal credit card number andoffered to pay for the cat’s care. Some time later they called meand told me the cat had arrived and was extremely dehydrated and emaciated but that they had managed tostabilize him. The following day, we took the cat in our care and took turns to feed him and hydrate him. He wasso weak he would eat laying down in his bed just barely lifting his head to get into the bowl. Spencer was a verysweet cat and after months of intense care, he came back and became healthy. Our volunteer and board memberMarilyn fell in love with him and adopted him. He is now a chubby and very content cat as shown in this photoshe gave us. Thanks to June one little life was spared that hot day. God knows how many stories she would tell us ifshe were still alive . . . Rest in peace. — Annamarie Taylor

Checkers and Sweet Pea -two of June’s cats.

Chelsea is an extremely friendly tuxedo male. He wasrescued from a Malden household whose landlord hadthreatened eviction if he and four other cats had notbeen removed immediately. They were spared byAnimal Umbrella before the cats were surrendered to alarge kill shelter.

Chelsea

This calico lost her home as her Lynn owner wasforced into low cost housing because of financialproblems. She had to give up four of her five cats asshe was only allowed to keep one. We took Amberand found her a new home.

These two remarkable cats survived a housefire but unfortunately, their owners moved inwith relatives who did not want them so theyremained outside. We heard the story and tookthem. They have now been adopted by acaring woman and they are no longerhomeless.
