This course allows you to look for work as an Animal Technician in a medical research facility. You will learn routine animal husbandry including animal breeding, procedures to prevent microbial pathogens, animal injection techniques, monitoring animal health and basic anaesthesia and tissue collection techniques.

Learning Outcomes As part of your studies you will discover how to identify and respond to animal behaviour and provide enrichment for animals. You will gain essential understanding of basic nutrition requirements, enrichment and follow Workplace Health and Safety procedures in an animal care environment. If majoring in the behavioural stream you will come to understand animal body language and positive training methods that can be used to train ALL animals. If majoring in the grooming stream you will be taught to groom a dog to a reasonable standard and learn to deal with clients. The Certificate III in Captive Animals is designed for people currently working as volunteers or in paid employment as animal keepers within the captive animal industry for at least 8 hours per week. This intensive course has a large online component. There is an element of customer service, as well as providing information on products and services.

Learning outcomesInstruction on daily duties and care will include feeding, maintaining hygiene and housing, grooming, observation and ensuring animal safety and well-being. Practical work will involve working hands-on with a variety of animals including dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, sheep, guinea pigs, rats, goats, horses, cows and even a goose.
