FALL 2014 OUR MISSION e purpose of the APF is to address pet overpopulation and animal suffering through education and appropriate action, to enhance human/animal relationships, and to provide care to animals in need. 53 Maple Avenue, Scotia, NY 12302 518.374.3944 www.animalprotective.org Volume 32 No. 3 Day 178 Bear Goes Home Bear arrived at the APF on March 8, 2014. We were told by the owner that she was not good around other dogs or cats. However, our behavior assessment told a different story. Bear exhibited very friendly behaviors toward people and did not appear overly reactive around other dogs. Never- theless, our team felt it would be better to err on the side of caution. So Bear was put up for adop- tion with the caveat that she could not go into a home with other pets. As time went by, potential adopters would inquire about Bear, only to be turned off by the restric- tions placed upon her. For six months this sweet dog tried to keep up hope that there was a forever home waiting for her. Hope finally arrived on September 2, 2014 in the form of Rose. Her dog had just passed away and she was looking for “a dog to spoil”. Our adoption counselor began to ask Rose about her lifestyle in order to assist her in selecting the most appropriate pet. All of Rose’s answers – no other pets, home all day – pointed to one dog as the best fit – Bear. Bear, aka “Baby Bear” is now Rose’s shadow. She follows her everywhere. Bear traded the kennel she lived in at the shelter for 178 days for a large fenced-in yard for doggy playtime and lots of comfortable patio furniture to relax on when she is finished playing. Inside the comfort of her new home is a couch where Bear curls up for naps. She even allows Rose to share the bed at night and wakes Rose in the morning when she is ready to start her day. We always love to hear updates on how our former shelter pets are doing. Send us photos and stories at [email protected] or just stop by the shelter. And the most amazing thing of all is that Rose takes Bear to PetSmart where she meets other dogs and gets along fine with them. Bear has learned to trust Rose and letting her guard down revealed an amaz- ingly affectionate dog. We never gave up hope that Bear would one day find this kind of happiness. Rose made happily ever after possible for this loving dog. ank you Rose for giving Bear the forever home she so deserves! Bear and Rose have been back to the APF for some wonderful visits. Everyone is always thrilled to see them and Bear is always glad to see the staff. In October Bear came in to show us her Halloween costume! She was smiling and showing off but she let her mom know when she was ready to go home by standing near the door and looking at Rose ... but not before she got hugs from the staff.

Day 178 Bear Goes HomeBear arrived at the APF on March 8, 2014. We were told by the owner that she was not good around other dogs or cats. However, our behavior assessment told a different story. Bear exhibited very friendly behaviors toward people and did not appear overly reactive around other dogs. Never-theless, our team felt it would be better to err on the side of caution. So Bear was put up for adop-tion with the caveat that she could not go into a home with other pets.

As time went by, potential adopters would inquire about Bear, only to be turned off by the restric-tions placed upon her.

Bear has learned to trust Rose and letting her guard down revealed an amaz-ingly affectionate dog.

We never gave up hope that Bear would one day find this kind of happiness. Rose made happily ever after possible for this loving dog. Thank you Rose for giving Bear the forever home she so deserves!

Meet Our New Executive DirectorOn October 27 the APF welcomed Deb Balliet as its new executive director. Ms. Balliet is a long-time resident of the Capital Region and brings more than 25 years of combined professional leadership and volunteer roles in animal welfare, program and budget management, community engagement, and fundraising. Most recently she was the CEO at the Equine Land Conservation Resource in Kentucky.

“Deb exemplified what we were looking for,” said Lisa McCarthy, board president, “someone with a passion for our mission, with connections in the community, and experience in program development, management and fundraising. We welcome her to the APF with great excitement.”

For more information about the APF or to contact Deb Balliet, please email [email protected], or call (518) 374-3944, ext. 110.

>Donate pet toys, food, or treats. And, our rabbits would love some fresh dandelion greens!

>Join one of APF’s benefit event committees, or plan a fundraiser with your workplace, school group, or club.

>Become a foster parent.

>Include the APF in your estate plans.

>Adopt – many wonderful animals are here waiting for you and their forever home!

Thank you for your generous and continued support. With every hour that you volunteer and dollar that you contribute, you en-able us provide compassionate care to animals in need. Because of you, we are able to reduce pet overpopulation through low cost spay and neuter services, and find wonderful forever homes for thousands of companion animals each year.

From my home –- including Allie the Boxer and Taz, the thoroughbred-Quarter horse cross—to yours, I wish you happy holidays and look forward to working with you.

Sincerely,

Deb BallietExecutive Director

PS: Please Save the Date and join us for some great fun at the Gala on May 21, 2015.

We are pleased to announce that Theresa Tommell, DVM has joined the staff at the APF as Director of Shelter Veterinary Services. Dr. Tommell will be responsible for all health related aspects of care for our shelter animals including diagnosis and treatment, surgical procedures, and sanitation and disease control. Dr. Tommell began her career in 1997 as a veterinary assistant. From there she went on to become a licensed veterinary technician and ultimately received her DVM from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. She was most recently employed at Just Cats Veterinary Hospital in Guilderland and prior to that at Rotterdam Veterinary Hospital. Her professional interests lie in the areas of small animal and equine medicine and surgery, cardiology, and dentistry.

THE APF COMMUNITY SPAY/NEUTER CLINIC - ONE YEAR LATERIt has been just over one year since our new community spay/neuter clinic opened. We are extremely grateful for the generous support of the ASPCA which allowed us to open this state-of-the-art clinic.

What an exciting time we’ve had expanding our spay/neuter program in a brand-new facility. We are very pleased with our progress. Since we opened our doors, over 3,000 animals have been spayed and neutered!

The services provided through our low-cost clinic are intended for those who cannot otherwise afford to have their pets spayed and neutered. And once again, through the generosity of the ASPCA, The Animal Protective Foundation was able to offer a subsidy to nearly 1,000 pet owners who could not afford the standard low-cost fees.

We are very proud of our spay/neuter team and how well they work together in orchestrating all the tasks involved in scheduling appoint-ments, keeping records, intake, surgery preparation, surgery, aftercare, and discharge.

High-quality, low-cost spaying and neuteringfor dogs and cats.

APF Community Spay/Neuter Clinic

As an organization and for our spay/neuter team, we have had a year of growth and change and we look forward to continuing our efforts and increasing the number of surgeries performed as well as expanding our outreach to the community.

Dear Friends,

Recently, we heard from Elayne who shared the latest news of Rosie, the tuxedo cat she adopted from the APF not long ago. According to Elayne, Rosie “hid under the bed the first night, but now runs around like she owns the place! She is very laid back, loving and loyal. It is a match made in heaven!”

It is because of stories such as Rosie’s that I am so pleased to have been named as APF’s Executive Director. After 7 years away from Schenectady County, it is immensely rewarding to be working in support of the animals in my home town. Together, with your support and that of our wonderful staff, volunteers, donors and partners, my goal is to increase the positive impact of the APF on the animals and our community as a whole.

Our ability to do that is enhanced by the hiring of our new Director of Veterinary Services, Theresa Tommell, DVM of Berne, NY. Dr. Tommell has 12 years of professional animal care experience and comes to us highly recommended. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Tommell.

If you are wondering how you might join in the effort, please consider these opportunities:

>Volunteer in the shelter by walking dogs, visiting with the cats or rabbits, as an animal transporter, or at our Adoption Center in the Niskayuna PetSmart.

>Make a cash donation.

“Shares the Love”The APF has been selected by Capitaland Motors of Glenville again this year as their charity of choice in the Subaru Share the Love Sales Event. Subaru will donate $250 for each lease or purchase at Capitaland between November 20, 2014 and January 2, 2015. Last year’s campaign resulted in a donation of $13,749 for the APF!

Several years ago when Capitaland Subaru hosted an adoption clinic for the APF, there were two cats that didn’t get adopted. Owners Al Rullo and Regina Grego decided to adopt them and make the dealership their home. On any given day you will find Elise and Yager lounging in an office chair or on a desk.

We thank Al and Regina for selecting the APF and for their ongoing support of our work on behalf of animals.

Glenn has always been available whenever we needed help. And, of course he has also adopted from the APF.
