Animal Kingdom –With Young Kids– One Day Standard

This easyPlan is designed for families with young children who plan to spend a full day at Animal Kingdom. It skips Animal Kingdom’s three most intense attractions – Expedition Everest (44” minimum height), DINOSAUR (40” minimum height), and Primeval Whirl (48” minimum height). It does visit Kali River Rapids (38” minimum height), but this is a gentle flume ride. If you prefer not to get wet or the kids aren’t tall enough to ride, simply skip it. If members of your group are interested in these attractions, see the Family Hybrid easyPlan or simply have those that plan to visit the thrills rides do so in the morning during Festival of the Lion King or with FASTPASS throughout the day when other attractions aren’t of interest. The “Skipped Attractions” section at the end of the easyPlan offers more advice on fitting these and other attractions into the day. Finally, keep in mind that It’s Tough To Be A Bug may scare some children. See the ride review for more information.

Variable Show Times and Deviation From the Plan

More so than Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom’s shows run on a variable schedule with different show times throughout the year. For example, the late morning Finding Nemo the Musical may begin at 11:30am or 11:45am. An afternoon Flights of Wonder show could begin at 1:00pm or 1:30pm. We have a bit of variability in the morning with the Festival of the Lion King show that may begin at 10am or 10:30am. If it begins at 10am, we’ll head straight there after Kilimanjaro Safaris to see it and then visit characters afterward. If it begins at 10:30am, we’ll have time to visit the characters before the show begins.

Variable Closing Time and Extending the Day

Animal Kingdom’s operating hours may run anywhere from 9am – 5pm to 8am – 9pm. The most common operating hours are 9am – 5pm or 9am – 6pm in Value/Regular Seasons and 9am – 7pm or 9am – 8pm during Peak and Holiday Seasons. During extremely busy times, we may see 8am – 8pm or 8am – 9pm operating hours, but this is only during about 20 dates throughout the year. This easyPlan runs from 9am – 5pm or so. If Animal Kingdom is open later, you can extend the day by adding a return visit to attractions you particularly enjoyed or visit attractions that were previously skipped. Crowds at Animal Kingdom dissipate shortly after the 3:45pm Parade. The last 60 to 90 minutes of operation is usually a great time to return to the major attractions with short waits. Hold off on returning to Expedition Everest and Kilimanjaro Safaris until the very end of the day. If you’re planning to return to Kilimanjaro Safaris near Park close, make sure you check your Times Guide to see when the last Safari leaves – it may be about 30 minutes before Park close.

Kali River Rapids in Winter and Summer

Kali River Rapids, Animal Kingdom’s principal flume ride, has wait times that fluctuate enormously based on weather. When it’s hot, FASTPASSes may run out before Expedition

Everest and Kilimanjaro Safaris and standby waits may be longer than either headliner. This is due to a lower capacity and slower loading/unloading times. If you’re visiting in summer, you’ll want to collect FASTPASSes for it as early as possible and ideally before 11am. Keep in mind that you will likely get soaking wet without a poncho or other protection. In winter, Kali River Rapids has much shorter waits because fewer people want to get wet. You may want to skip the attraction altogether if the temperature is below 70 degrees or you don’t want to get wet.

The Attractions in Order:

Arrival: Arrive at Animal Kingdom’s turnstiles at least 15 minutes prior to opening. Have one person from your party collect all theme park tickets and move to the front of the pack on the left side of the rope drop area (this person is known as the FASTPASS runner). A brief preshow should begin about ten minutes prior to Park opening and then you will be let into the Park to line up for the ride of your choice.

1. Have the FASTPASS runner head straight to Kilimanjaro Safaris to collect FASTPASSes. Most of the people in line will be headed in the same direction. Continue up to the Tree of Life, where there will be one path to the left and one path to the right. Take the left path up into Africa. The Kilimanjaro Safaris FASTPASS machines are located directly to the right of the standby entrance underneath a hut-like area. Collect FASTPASSes for everyone in the group. Alternatively, everyone can stick together and collect their own FASTPASSes.

2. Everyone else in the group should follow the same path, continuing up toward the Tree of Life and taking the left path into Africa. As you’re walking, look to your left for Pizzafari and the walkway to Camp Minnie-Mickey – we’re headed back here in Step 3. Meet the FASTPASS runner outside of the Kilimanjaro Safaris standby line and get in line as quickly as possible.

3. Head back the way you came through Africa and back across the bridge to Discovery Island. Look to your right for Pizzafari Quick Service. The path to Camp Minnie-Mickey is located on the right, just past it. We want to head to the first Festival of the Lion King show, which may begin at 10:00am or 10:30am. If it begins at 10:00am, we won’t have a lot of time for the Meet and Greets until after the show. If it begins at 10:30am, we should have about 30 minutes to meet the characters. Visit whichever characters you miss after the show. The Camp Minnie-Mickey characters may not begin appearing until 10am. If this is the case, visit the characters in Africa along the path that connects Africa with Asia if you have extra time before 10am.

4. See Festival of the Lion King. The theater is located in the back of Camp Minnie-Mickey.

5. Head over to DinoLand USA to ride TriceraTop Spin. Exit Camp Minnie-Mickey and take a right through Discovery Island. Continue walking around the Tree of Life until you get to the

walkway over to DinoLand. TriceraTop Spin is located in the middle of DinoLand USA. Ride multiple times if the wait is short and you have interest.

6. Let the kids run around the Boneyard playground, which is located in DinoLand USA near the walkway that connects it with Discovery Island. There isn’t a whole lot for older kids or adults to do here, so it’s a good time to use FASTPASS at Expedition Everest or ride Primeval Whirl or DINOSAUR if you have members in your group that are interested.

7. Ideally, have one person collect everyone’s tickets and head over to Kali River Rapids to collect FASTPASSes. The easiest way to get here is to walk up through DinoLand, past the Finding Nemo Theater and Expedition Everest, and over to Kali River Rapids. The path to Kali River Rapids is located right before Yak & Yeti Quick Service’s seating section (or right after it if you’re coming from Discovery Island). Kali River Rapids FASTPASS machines are located directly in front of you and the ride entrance is on the right, just before the machines.

8. It’s time for lunch. As written, we’re headed to Flame Tree Barbecue, which serves some of the best barbecue in Disney World. You’re also free to visit one of the other quick services if you so choose. Restaurantosaurus has plenty of indoor seating and offers a lot of your standard Disney burger/nugget/salad fare. Pizzafari also offers a lot of air-conditioned seating and serves Disney pizza, salad, and a Hot Italian Sandwich. Yak & Yeti Quick Service, also known as Anandupar Local Food Cafes, serves Asian-inspired dishes, salads, and sandwiches.

9. See It’s Tough to be a Bug. The theater is located inside the Tree of Life and the entrance to the attraction is in Discovery Island, right across from Flame Tree Barbecue and the pathway into/out of DinoLand USA.

10. Head up through Africa to board the Wildlife Express train to Rafiki’s Planet Watch, if it holds interest with your group. There are Meet and Greets, a play area, a petting zoo, a nicely air-conditioned exhibit area with veterinary services, and more. The Wildlife Express is a large, very slow moving train and it’s the only way to get to Rafiki’s Planet Watch. The train station is located in the back of Africa to the right of Harambe Fruit Market.

11. Explore Rafiki’s Planet Watch. We have about an hour budgeted here. When you’re done, ride the Wildlife Express back to Africa.

12. Ride Kilimanjaro Safaris with the FASTPASSes collected earlier in the day. The FASTPASS return line is located about 50 feet to the right of the standby entrance. You should see it as you disembark the Wildlife Express train in Step 11.

13. Walk the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail in Africa. You should see the entrance as you disembark Kilimanjaro Safaris. Most visitors spend about 20 minutes here, but it’s an “on your own” zoological exhibit where you can set your own pace.

14. Walk back to Asia using the walkway that connects it to Africa. Ride Kali River Rapids with the FASTPASSes collected earlier in the day. The FASTPASS entrance is right next to the standby entrance, which is to the right of the FASTPASS machines. Note that you will likely get soaked.

15. Walk the Maharajah Jungle Trek in Asia. The entrance is across from Kali River Rapids, past the FASTPASS machines on the left. It’s similar to the Pangani Trail.

16. See the 3:45pm Parade. The least crowded spots are along the path that connects Africa to Asia, which is right where we are. It takes about 15 minutes for the Parade to get here, so you may have some time to grab snacks, use the restroom, etc.

17. You should have some time before the next Finding Nemo the Musical show, which typically begins around 4:45pm. Unless Animal Kingdom isn’t crowded at all, you’ll want to arrive at least 15 minutes early. The theater is located on the path that connects DinoLand USA to Asia. From Asia, walk past Expedition Everest and you’ll see it on the left. See Finding Nemo the Musical.

18. It should be about 5:20pm. If Animal Kingdom is open until 6pm or later, feel free to return to any attractions you enjoyed or previously skipped. Crowds generally dissipate after the 3:45pm Parade and lines only get shorter as it gets later in the evening. The last hour of operation is usually a good time to return to any of the major or minor attractions.

19. Exit Animal Kingdom.

Skipped Attractions and How to Fit Them In

DINOSAUR – Overall, this is probably the scariest ride at Disney World. If members of your group want to ride, do so before 10:30am or with FASTPASS. FASTPASSes are plentiful and the return time is almost always 40 minutes in the future, unless Animal Kingdom is slammed. When crowds are low, DINOSAUR generally has waits of 20 minutes or less.

Expedition Everest – If members of your group would like to ride Expedition Everest, you’ll want to do so before 10am or with FASTPASS. It should be your second FASTPASS priority, behind Kilimanjaro Safaris. With FASTPASS, the total wait/ride time should be under ten minutes, so it’s a quick attraction that can be accomplished while the rest of the group grabs a snack, uses the restroom, or takes a short break.

Flights of Wonder – This show is generally scheduled five times throughout the morning and early afternoon. If you do want to see it, you’ll need to substitute it for other attractions. You may want to skip one of the other stage shows, the trip to Rafiki’s Planet Watch, or one of the Jungle walks.

Primeval Whirl – While not particularly scary, Primeval Whirl does have a 48” minimum height. If members of your group would like to ride, do so before 10:30am or with FASTPASS.
