You will have the opportunity to get involved in practical work experience when supporting the running of Kirkley Hall Zoological Gardens and Equestrian Centre.

Work experience and volunteeringYou’ll have the chance to get involved in various projects:• Animal Care students will gain work

experience within Kirkley Hall Zoological Gardens where you will become a trainee zoo keeper, taking part in all aspects of a zoo keeper role.

• Student's also have the opportunity to access our Zoo Cadet Keeper programme during their studies.

• Animal Care students have the opportunity to take additional qualifications, such as, dog walking, pet sitting, animal health and husbandry and safe use of veterinary medicines

• Access to online recourses including ZIMS and Vet logic systems.

• Equine students will gain work experience in our fully functioning livery.

• Equine students also have the chance to get involved in our British Eventing horse horse trials held at the campus in June each year as well as BHS dressage, show jumping, competitions and demonstrations.

Trips and visits You may have the opportunity go on a variety of different trips – recent destinations have included Holland, South Africa and Costa Rica.

Business and enterprise projects• Students developed employability and

business enterprise skills by organising live events, conferences and demonstrations.

• Students have hosted visiting speakers, raising money for animal and horse related charities. Students work closely with Squirrel Conservation, National Parks and Wildlife Trust.

• Students take part in the Kirkley Hall countryside fair with various demonstrations and assisting in elements of event organisation.

Guest lecturesTutors are active in engaging outside speakers and industry representatives. Recent speakers have included local police dog handlers, RSPCA, RSPB, medical research representatives, marine conservation representatives, Olympic riders and many more highlighting the wide variety of jobs available in the industry.

Employers ForumEmployers are a key driver on our courses – we regularly meet with businesses through our Employers Forum to develop employer led curriculum and training.

The college, one of only three colleges in the UK to achieve full membership of BIAZA, recently received two Blue Cross Animals in Education awards. The Kirkley Hall Zoo was awarded the Blue Cross Best Mammal award for their primates and the Best Bird Welfare award for their Wetland Aviary.

Our fully equipped veterinary centre has everything you would expect to find in a veterinary surgery including consultation room, operating theatre, X-ray room, scrub sinks and canine and animal housing.We are an approved centre for both the pre-veterinary nursing and the full veterinary nursing qualification and work with many veterinary practices throughout the North East Region.

Daniel Hakin, of Cramlington, completed his Apprenticeship in Dog Grooming in the same year that he bathed and groomed St Bernard Henry for the prestigious and world famous Cruft’s competition. Henry came fourth in class. Now working as a self-employed dog groomer, Daniel is continuing his studies at Level 3. He works from Cramlington's Little Buddies Dog Grooming, Spa and Retreat.

Level 2 Dog Grooming

Veterinary Nursing To study one of our Veterinary Nursing courses you will need to secure a placement in a veterinary practice before you enrol on your course. Level 2 Diploma for Veterinary Care Assistants

You will be required to obtain a 4 day per week placement for the year. This can be paid/unpaid in a veterinary practice that handles small animals.

Equine Academy If you wish to follow a professional career in the horse industry, the quality of facilities and high calibre of staff at our Kirkley Hall Campus will give you an excellent start.

Equine AcademyThe fantastic facilities at our equestrian centre include a 25 horse stable yard, eight horse DIY livery yard for student horses, two 60m x 30m outdoor all weather arenas and a 50m x 25m indoor riding arena. Other facilities include a horse walker, weighbridge, solarium, gait analysis facilities and indoor demonstrating barns and a cross country course.

Our equestrian centre runs a British Eventing affiliated one day event each year, which attracts hundreds of entries. In addition monthly affiliated dressage competitions as well as regular unaffiliated competitions will all give you experience in organising, planning and competing in prestigious equine events.

You would normally spend three days in college with the remainder of your time available for work experience.

You will study units including:• Health and wellbeing of animals• Movement, handling and accommodation

Entry requirementsYou should have studied a GCSE or an Entry Level course to ensure that you have the best chance of successfully completing the programme. However, students without the above qualifications should still apply as suitability will be assessed at interview.

You will take part in routine duties on the stable yard at the college, to give you a taste of what it is like working with horses on a full-time basis. What will I study on this course?This course is for those who want to work in a position of responsibility in the equine industry. The course will develop your technical knowledge and practical equestrian skills through lectures, duties, demonstrations and visits. You will be expected to take a supervisory role during your second year, with responsibility of fellow students, as well as the horses. This course also includes a longer period of work experience before progressing to the second year (usually taken during the summer break).
