Dear Mid-Towners,

In this last written message for this year, I wish each one of you and your families good health and joy for 2014. I thank you most sincerely for your efforts in 2013. This was quite an eventful year for me and for Mid-Town. With the deeply regretted loss of some members and the fresh engagement of new members, I hope that 2013 will be seen as the year of renewal. We’ve had some terrific speakers, great events and continued success with our projects. There’s no doubt that we are well-positioned for a roaring start in January 2014.

Recently, my thoughts have turned to the past by reading a book written in 1961, a couple of years after my birth and a few years before Mid-Town’s Charter. The author, Pier Paolo Pasolini, is an Italian journalist, writer, and film-maker who records his observations about his first visit to India. He stays at the Taj in Mumbai on his arrival, and then visits many cities. One of his observations is on the prevalence of Rotary in the cities he visits, including Aurangabad where he attends a Rotary dinner! Sadly, many of his insights are about the poverty and illness he encounters wherever he journeys. This is at a time when Pandit Nehru was the Prime Minister, John F Kennedy was in the White House, the Soviet Union was a superpower, and China was not yet one. Pasolini speaks of India’s ‘enormous population’ of 400 million. Today, it is almost three times larger.

In light of today’s pressing challenges, it is easy to forget how much progress India has made since that book was written, that is in my lifetime. The Green Revolution has dramatically reduced hunger. The availability of basic health care is much better. Pasolini speaks of an illiteracy rate of 80% — this surely has been reduced significantly. He also speaks of the negligible size and influence of India’s middle class. One need only look at the modern consumer society that India has become to recognize the growth and scope of its present middle class. Most of its members are younger than me and have expectations that their children and grandchildren will be even better off than they are now.

While reflecting on these changes, I realised our tendency to glorify the past and perhaps discount the progress that has been made since ‘the good old days’. It is in this spirit that I take the encouraging recommendations of Hari Sankaran (our recent, excellent speaker on the challenges to India’s infrastructure growth). Our recent past is replete with examples of how we, as individuals and as Mid-Towners, can create positive change in our community, despite daunting challenges which sometimes seem insurmountable.

In this vein, I’m very proud to share with you that my company, State Street Corporation, through its charitable trust, has approved a donation of $25,000 for NASEOH and the Midday Meal Programme. State Street uses the organisation Give2Asia (Delhi) to vet its recipients. Now that NASEOH and the Midday Meal Programme have been vetted by Give2Asia, both are on Give2Asia’s list of approved charities. This list is provided to any company seeking to make charitable donations in India. I hope this opens the door to wider support for these worthy programmes. I’d like to thank Naren Mohatta and Gaurav Kapadia for all they’ve done for NASEOH and the Midday Meal Programme, without which these donations from State Street would have been impossible.

Once again, thank you Mid-Towners and your families for all you’ve done in 2013. Here’s to 2014!

ANIL AMBO: A passionate Rotarian

Anil Ambo is a versatile personality, ever ready to enter unchartered

territory with faith that something good will emerge. The son of a UN diplomat, Anil is a diehard optimist, humorous and a great motivator. A slogan observed in his father’s room during early childhood — This can be done — made an indelible mark on him and serves as a guiding principle.

An honours graduate in Maths, Anil began his career in marketing before his 19th birthday. Instead of going for higher studies to the US on a UN sponsorship, he chose to work with the Tata Group in Naxal-hit Kolkata. Anil completed his Masters in Marketing Management from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management, standing first class first. Always a multi-tasker, Anil served as a visiting professor at KC College of Management Studies while also completing his degree in law.

An accomplished marketing professional, Anil collaborated with a consultant from South Africa to pioneer organised direct marketing in India. At a time when a leading research company forecasted sale of 409 vacuum cleaners per year, Anil and his team turned all established marketing strategies upside down and introduced door-to-door marketing of Euroclean and Aquaguard for Eureka Forbes. This revolutionary concept has given birth to several thousand entrepreneurs over the years. Besides, Anil has several new marketing ideas to his credit, like the first ‘Walk-in Ad’ on the last page of The Times of India Mumbai in September 1981. This elicited 2,453 aspirants walking-in and creating a record of sorts. This has been an effective recruitment tool ever since.

Currently engaged as a freelance marketing and management consultant, Anil guides family-run businesses

to professionalise and compete with MNCs. Anil greatly enjoys mentoring young adults and conducting executive training workshops. Varied InterestsAnil is an avid cricketer and reader of non-fiction literature. He also spends time understanding the philosophy of the Bhagwad Geeta. He is an active trustee with an international NGO. At one of its multi-dimensional facilities near Jodhpur, Anil heads the school project which aims to build better citizens. The student strength of this school has grown from 100 to 600 over the years.

Family ConnectAnil’s father was the first foreigner to be knighted by the Malaysian Government, with the highest title of Tansri while Anil’s mother held the title of Puansri. Tansri Ambo m a s t e r m i n d e d national health schemes in India, Malaysia and Africa. Anil’s mother Swarin has written several c o m m e n t a r i e s on the Bhagwad Geeta. With her strong belief in Indian culture and values, she heads our traditional family

where four generations live together in love and harmony. Our elder son Arvind is a CEO with a leading logistics company while his wife Priya is Chief Manager at Kotak Mahindra. Our younger son Abhay is a dynamic marketing professional with the Mahindra Group. Possibly, I am the sobering influence in Anil’s life, whose greatest joy is spending free time with our granddaughter Arshiya.

The Rotary ExperienceAnil is passionate and conscientious about whatever he does. His engagement with Rotary exudes the same seriousness as any official assignment. Anil entered Rotary in 1989 with membership at another club. He became President in 1995–96. Adding a professional touch, the club did some major projects like adopting the Colaba Municipal School for 10 years, mass marriage of 100 girls in a tribal hinterland and a matching grant project at Umerkhadi remand home. For personal reasons, Anil took a short break from Rotary, but re-entered when Mid-Town welcomed him into their fold. As an active Rotarian, he has been on the board for most of his Rotary life, including holding the position of Honorary Secretary for seven years. His message to all is Enjoy Rotary.

Fellowship Bridge Tournament

The first proagramme of the Sports Committee which is Fellowship Bridge Tournament was

held on December 8, 2013, at Willingdon Sports Club. A total of 22 Rotarians/Anns participated in this event. Two tables consisting of four pairs of bridge players participated in the duplicate bridge event. The tournament was conducted professionally.

We thank R/Ann Taru Sheth for arranging the professional tournament director and her efforts in making the event possible at Willingdon Club. We also thank all the participants. After approximately 20 boards were played, the ranking was:

As decided before, prizes were given to the first three rankings. Some of the other participants also enjoyed a good game of rummy.

After the card game, we all joined together to have lunch at the Club. The event concluded at approximately 2.30 pm. All the participants thoroughly enjoyed themselves. They also requested similar events to be held again and will work hard to get more participation by the other Rotarians of our Club.

Adventure in ESSEL WORLD This was a big project undertaken by RC Lala on December 9, 2013. There were nine teams from different clubs such as HR, Mumbai Uptown, Shivaji Park, etc. In all there were 35 persons, including 18 participants, 15 OC members and 1 alumnus. A treasure hunt was organised with various tasks such as thunder twice, commando bridge, air obstacle and rock climbing. Finally, the treasure was hidden in the Mirror Maze.

In this entire event, the teams were judged for completing the tasks in record time. It was a great success and the winners were RC Mumbai Uptown. Each one of them was given a cash prize of R1500 plus a merit certificate and RC Lala stood second with a cash prize of R600. The feedback section showed that this tremendous event created many memories for all participants which will be cherished lifelong.

UNITY WorkshopThis was organised by the Professional Development team. The session was conducted by Ms Nilofer who is a talented and amazing speaker. First she asked each Rotaractor to introduce themselves. During the introduction she gave each member a word which is mostly seen in a negative way. The member had to say a good thing about the word.

This was followed by an activity where members were teamed up. Each team had to express the word ‘love’ in thier own manner via dumb charades. Ms Nilofer also made the members do an

activity using a piece of thread and asking each member to hold a part of it to make a connection or a link between them. Then the members did simple things like walking and sitting while being linked to each other. Then she made them do the same actions without the thread. It was a two hour session with feedback taken at the end. The aim of these sessions was to build confidence in the members and make them aware that they must be thankful for the things in their life.

LAGORI tere pyaar meinThe main aim of this project was to popularise traditional Indian sports which have been ignored by the current generation. Another aim of this project was to bring coordination among Rotaractors. The project took place at Shivaji Park, Dadar. The arrangement for the project was done by the events and sports coordinator of RC Lala Rtn Rounak Chikhale. The project began at 2pm in Shivaji Park with all the Rotaractors divided into four teams of six players each. The captains of the four teams were Sandhya, Rajsi, Meghana and Rucha.

After three interesting matches the event came to an end with Sandhya’s team emerging victorious. Rtn Rounak gave a vote of thanks.

This year Children’s Day which was celebrated on November

14, 2013, was unique in many ways. Unlike other schools, Walsingham House School (WHS) did not give a holiday to its students. Instead, they celebrated it in a fruitful yet entertaining manner. Under the guidance of Ms Dharini, the Rotary Club of WHS, organised an entertaining programme on classical Indian dance and presented a talk on heritage and organic living.

The event commenced with the lighting of the auspicious diya by our trustee Dr Rajendraji Mittal, our principal Dr (Mrs) Ananthakrishanan and our junior school coordinator Mrs Pariddhi Somani.

Following this was a pleasing and colourful performance of Bharatnatyam, a classical Indian dance form, by the students of the

junior school, under the guidance of Ms Archita Mehta. The dance was well coordinated and performed. Another classical Indian dance which originated in northern India was the Kathak. This performance was given a by the extremely talented and beautiful Ms Rujuta Soman. Before performing she explained to us the meaning and significance of Kathak — a word derived from katha meaning stories. She also explained to us the meaning and formation of different mudras during her performance. It requires tremendous stamina and years of practice and dedication to master the art of Kathak. Her performance received a thunderous applause by one and all present.

Lastly, talks on heritage and organic living were given by Ms Mira Shiva, Ms Maya Goburdhun and Ms Lata Sharma of Nav Danya

organisation. They spoke at length about the importance of organic food and revealed some unknown truths about biodiversity conservation, organic farming, the rights of farmers and the process of seed saving.

The event ended with a presentation by Ms Neha Raj Singh about the working and functioning of Nav Danya. Truly, the event was an eye-opener. It showcased our ancient Indian culture and the importance of organic living for the overall well-being of the society .

1010 CHARTER NIGHT

In these years that James and I have been part of the Rotary

Mid-Town Club, I’ve learnt that getting together and celebrating the commitment that our community has to its mission and purpose is an important part of our Club’s activities. The warmth, generosity and friendship with which our members and their families participate in these events are a constant source of pleasure.

I remember when I attended my very first dinner — was it a fellowship night or a charter night, I cannot clearly recall — I was a little bewildered. I did not know many people, I didn’t really remember the names of all those whom I had met at the few Wednesday lunches I had attended, and I certainly had not met most of the spouses. But at the end of the evening, most people had welcomed me, many had asked me to join them at their table, I had had so many conversations that even though I still did not really know everybody’s names, I felt the embrace of the community.

A few weeks ago (and over five years later from that first dinner) the Club celebrated its Charter Night. James is the President of the Club now, and I have certainly got to know the names of almost all the members. We have managed to chat about so many things with each other, be it our children, our hobbies, our professions, our musical tastes, our common connections, the different projects that we are involved with… that a sense of family prevails.

This time, Charter Night was by the poolside at the Willingdon Club. It is in bad taste for me to praise the evening myself since it was James

who chose the venue and the evening’s fine entertainment by the lovely Suneeta Rao. But I personally love outdoor parties with twinkling lights and gleaming water and trees lit up — perhaps it is my Bangalore legacy asserting itself (is that why October’s fellowship night at the Breach Candy poolside stands out in my mind?). Nature had certainly gifted us a beautiful evening with the sliver of a moon and hint of breeze. Add to that the magic of a star with a fabulous voice and a magnetic personality — I hope you will forgive me if I say I thought the evening was glamorous. And fun: I enjoyed talking to so many people, some of whom have been part of the club since its early days,

some who are only now learning its ways, visitors from abroad and friends from nearby.

I think we all recognise that it’s been a tough year for the Club. Every few weeks, we’ve faced illness and loss among active and well-loved members. Charter night was a moment we needed to renew the spirit and carry forward the energy and goodwill of the Club. I hope we succeeded — in my opinion we did. So allow me I raise a toast to the Rotary Club of Bombay Mid-Town and may it move forward always with evermore grace and strength.

DISABLED Get Abled

ADAPT is the acronym for ‘Able Disabled People Together.’ This was previously known as ‘Spastic Society of India’.

ADAPT looks after and supports mentally and physically disabled children by helping them to coordinate their movements and learn to speak and express themselves properly. ADAPT is the brainchild of Mithu Alur who conceptualised and founded it in 1972.

RCBMT has been associated with ADAPT since Rotary Year 2009-2010. Recently, President James Brunner led a delegation of Mid-Towners to the NGO’s premises at Bandra. The delegates were welcomed by Asha Kumar (Director of ADAPT Foundation) and Sunita Malcotia (Project Co-ordinator).

The delegates were taken around ADAPT’s large premises, where children with disability are well looked after, provided with different training programmes, including education up to graduate level. The delegates were deeply impressed by the activities of ADAPT, some of which are:

seminars and conferences at the national and international level

disability through dissemination of information via print, electronic media and public events

with disability, their families and allies

ADAPT strongly believes in bringing ‘disabled persons’ closer to ‘able persons’ so that they can work together for a truly inclusive society. The purpose is to integrate disabled children with the society at large. While thanking the authorities for welcoming the Mid-Towners, President James Brunner handed over a donation of R1,50,000. He promised to continue RCBMT’s support in future as well. – Rtn Naren Mohatta

Visit to WATERSHED PROJECT at Kegwa and RAM KRISHNA MISSION at Sakwar

The global Grant Committee visited Kegwa village for a first-hand look at the Watershed

Project Phase II and the R K Mission at Sakwar where we are providing a vocational training facility to Adivasi boys and girls. At Kegwa, we visited the

forestation and fruit orchards planted this monsoon.

We also visited the school where we have provided benches, educational charts and a water filter. At Sakwar we met the Swamiji who took us through the agricultural training centre and hospital. We have provided a generator, training van, machinery and educational books. We will also be providing computers for community health training of the local girls.

Aruna was elected as International National Representative in 1996. She also served as Chairperson of Inner Wheel Public Service Committee. They have brought prestige to our Club. So far we have had 45 Presidents who have contributed to the growth and fellowship of our Club. In the past six months our President Mrs Jyotika Premnarayen has made a commendable contribution by organising projects in the fields of children’s education, health, family life and celebration of festivals.The attendance of members at the monthly meetings has increased and the occasional speakers make our

fellowships extremely enjoyable. At the end, it would be suitable to enumerate the objects of Inner Wheel, lest we deviate:

INNER WHEEL 14

Children Toy Foundation (CTF) is an organisation which

establishes toy/game libraries for children. These toys and games involve creative thinking, decision making and problem solving skills which are important to achieve success in life. CTF mainly helps underprivileged children, but their aim is to set up a toy/game library in every school. CTF also has its own projects such as four mobile vans and two Khelvigyan Centres at Baroda and Matunga and a few municipal schools.

Inner Wheel Club’s PP Asha Bhatia has been supporting this cause since many years. Her initiative prompted IWC members to participate in the annual games arranged by CTF at the Radio Club. This year our Club donated R 25,500 for purchase of new games and toys. On November 12, 2013, our Club project was held at Los Angeles Municipal Schools, Matunga. There were 70 disciplined children of Class III, a few teachers and the school principal along with three members from IWC. Our President Jyotika Premnarayen presented the cheque to the Principal Mrs Nalawade.

It was very satisfying for us to serve snacks, chocolates, cakes and popcorn with cold drinks to all present. Playing the board games was a challenging experience and

we are proud to say that Asha Bhatia was awarded a certificate for winning five mind games at a stretch at their Corporate Contest. Two talented students entertained us by presenting a puppet show based on the story of the hare and tortoise. The project was very timely as it was celebrated on Children’s Day which falls on November 14.

Next, we prepared for the 45th Charter Night of Inner Wheel Club. Here, it would be appropriate to review our history. In 1923, Mrs Margaret Oliver Golding, a trained nurse and wife of a Rotarian, formed an organisation of Rotarians’ wives. In 1924, the wives of Rotarians of Manchester Club adopted the title — Inner Wheel. Since then, 10th January is celebrated as the International Inner Wheel Day all over the world.

Inner Wheel came to India in 1955.Our Club was formed in 1969 and the Late Mrs Nalini Dahanukar was our First President. We have had three Presidents elected as District Chairperson. First Founder President Late Nalini Dahanukar (1973-74), Late Usha Haribhakti (1978-79) and Aruna Sheth (1984-85).
