Making the most of limited water supplies in rural locations is often difficult

because of the pressure loss problems we get with standard hose.

New regulations mean we need to make provision for additional water

supplies for use in fire fighting following an aircraft accident.

Having bought large capacity monitors to protect our open top floating

roof tanks we found that ordinary fire hose was insufficient to feed these

    water hungry cannons.

    Pressure Loss Reduction

    When fluids are pumped down

any kind of pipe pressure energy

is lost through friction with the

    pipe wall and via turbulence

    caused by fittings and other

factors that may disrupt the flow.

    Increasing the diameter of the

waterway can dramaticallyreduce this pressure loss a 1%

    increase in diameter produces a

    5% reduction in pressure loss.

Duraline Hi-Vol Systems bring the benefits of a larger diameter

    waterway plus additional advantages.

Duraline Hi-Vol moves huge quantities of water very quickly over long

distances with minimal friction losses. A single length of 125 mm (5

inch) Duraline Hi-Vol can move the same amount of water as eight

lengths of 64 mm (2.5 inch) fire hose.

To assist in understanding the relationship between pressure, flow

and hose diameter in hose layout planning Angus has produced a

simple-to-use computer software package called HoseCalc to give

a theoretical solution to the fluid dynamics of large diameter hoses.

The theoretical results obtained using HoseCalc have been verified

in practical demonstrations witnessed by independent inspectors.

HoseCalc is available on floppy disc from Angus Fire or as a download

    from the internet at :

    http://www.angusfire.co.uk\htm\wnpres49.htm.

The following table of results from HoseCalc shows how pressurelosses can be dramatically reduced by using Duraline Hi-Vol.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING

    DURALINE HI-VOL LARGE DIAMETER HOSE?

    Uses fewer pumps in relay

    than traditional fire hose.

    Relay pumping ties up valuable

    resources like pumping

    appliances, fire-fighters, and

    many lengths of standard

diameter fire hose. It is also

highly vulnerable to vehiclefailure. With its much simpler

    logistics Duraline Hi-Vol releases

all these resources so they can

    be better employed elsewhere

and also reduces the overall cost

    of the fire fighting operation.

Eliminates the logistical nightmare of spaghetti on the fire

    ground.

Many lengths of standard fire hose on the fire ground can pose a

serious safety hazard to fire crews. Replacing them with a few lengths

of Duraline Hi-Vol makes the fire ground much safer.

This was the experience of fire crews in Lancashire Fire & Rescue

Service when they used FETCH recently at this massive blaze at a

    rubber factory.

Duraline Hi-Vol is the big brother

    of the world famous Angus

    Duraline fire hose. It features

    specially formulated high grade

    synthetic rubber extruded

    through an all synthetic woven

    jacket to give Duraline quality

    performance.

    Duraline Hi-Vol is designed for

    long storage life and

    maintenance-free service in

    even the harshest

    environments. This is essential

since it will spend more time in

storage than in use - it is no

good if you take it out and

    it leaks.

If any kind of water supply hose kinks then it may be badly damagedwhen dragged. With heavier large diameter hose this is even more

important. Duraline Hi-Vol is tough and durable with exceptional

    resistance to kinking.

Duraline Hi-Vol exceeds the requirements of the most demanding

international standard BS 6391 Type 3 for resistance to abrasion,

heat, chemicals, oil, weathering, ultra-violet light and ozone, including

    100% pressure testing.

It is manufactured in compliance with BS EN ISO 9001:1994 quality

management systems. Raw materials, components, and finished

products are rigorously tested and inspected to ensure excellent

    product reliability.

    HOW DO YOU TRANSPORT, DEPLOY

AND RETRIEVE DURALINE HI-VOL ON ROAD SURFACES?

    The most common way of

    transporting and deploying

    Duraline Hi-Vol is in flaking

boxes. These can carry up to

around 2 km of Duraline Hi-Vol

and offer a low cost and simple

    deployment technique. The hose

is simply drawn out of the boxes

and lowered on to the ground.

    The Angus FETCHSystem (Fast

    and Easy Techniques for

    Collecting Hi-Vol) enables fire

    crews to bring Duraline Hi-Vol

    back into storage after an

    incident with the minimum of

physical effort (a single coil of

5 inch Duraline Hi-Vol can weigh

50 kg). It avoids the risk of injuries

and fatigue during emergenciesand training exercises and so

    complies with Manual Handling

    Regulations.

    FETCH comprises a simple but

    cleverly designed twin-drum

    friction system with very few

    moving parts for maximum cost-

    effectiveness and reliability in an

    emergency. The mechanism is

driven by an independenthydraulic power pack. As an

option it can be PTO driven.

    HOW DO YOU TRANSPORT, DEPLOY

AND RETRIEVE DURALINE HI-VOL ON ROAD SURFACES?

The Angus FETCH System is supplied as an

assembled skid enabling fire services to custom

engineer it into their own vehicle preferences

and budgets. This approach has proven

    extremely popular.

Vehicle layouts may be sub-contracted to a third

party, built on a modified chassis by fire service

engineers or designed and built by a vehiclemanufacturer.

    HOW DO YOU TRANSPORT, DEPLOY

AND RETRIEVE DURALINE HI-VOL OVER ROUGH TERRAIN?

    FireKat

The Angus FireKat Series 3 is a large-diameter

hose deployment and retrieval system specially

designed for rough terrain. It is highly

    manoeuvrable with excellent off-road handling

capabilities, making it ideal for applications

where speed of deployment is critical. Its key

design feature is simplicity - there is little that

can go wrong. And of course with this simplicitycomes affordability!

Fully self-contained four wheel drive all terrain vehicle

based on a Unimog type chassis carries 1 km of 5 inch

(125 mm) Duraline Hi-Vol with additional storage space

    for fire fighting equipment.

Deploys one kilometre of Duraline Hi-Vol in only2-3 minutes depending on the terrain.

Hydraulic reeler collects the Duraline Hi-Vol - the only

manual effort required is to guide the hose from side to

side! The Duraline Hi-Vol is then unwound into the hosestorage area ready for action.

Duraline Hi-Vol takes the pressure from the pumper and puts

it at the business end where its really needed with negligiblepressure loss.

HOW DO YOU CONNECT LINES OF DURALINE HI-VOL TOGETHER?

In the past some fire services were reluctant to standardise on large-diameter hose because of concerns

about how best to connect the lines together. This is no longer the case because globally the Storz

coupling has become established as the standard coupling for large-diameter hose.

    Angus Fire offers a comprehensive

    range of lightweight field-replaceable

    Corru-Grip Storz couplings for use

    with Duraline Hi-Vol.

The Angus Jumbo Wye is designed

    for those high water demand

    situations where supply and/or

    distribution requires multiple high

    volume lines.

    The Angus Five-Way Gated

    Distribution Manifold or Phantom

    Pumper is a multipurpose distribution

    device available with special fittings

on request, and as with all Angus

    Duraline Hi-Vol system components,

you can rely on the lowest possible

pressure loss across a broad rangeof flows.

    The Angus 4-way in-line collecting

head. Available in other outlets andconfigurations.

    Incoming Gated Relief Valve. Allows

full control of water pressure (9revolutions to open). Rotatable

    offering varying discharge options.

Pressure relief operates with valve in

    open or closed position.

The Duraline Hi-Vol Relief Elbow is

designed for use where gate valvesare not desired. Features include

    directional discharge port, air bleed

    and carrying handle.

Angus offers a range of customised reelers designed to individual

requirements. Hose deployment from a reeler system is considerably

slower than FETCH or FireKat. In addition, it is not possible to deploy

continuous lengths greater than 200m without the need to couple

    up to the adjacent reel.

Consideration should also be given to the overall weight of the trailer

and whether it will conform to statutory towing regulations. Also the

correct towing vehicle needs to be established in relation to theweight of the fully laden trailer.

Finally, a decision needs to be made on powering the reeler. The

choice is to either use hydraulics from the prime mover or include a

hydraulic power pack on the reeler trailer.

Angus Fire offers a full range of hose ramps and techniques for

managing traffic logistics around incidents where Duraline Hi-Vol is

    used.

The picture shows an all steel solution for 5 (125mm) hose although

ramps in other materials such as rubber and PVC are available.
