ANGOLA — The forces of good and evil, the balance of “The Force,” will be represented in a big way at the Sixth Annual Angola Balloons Aloft on Friday and Saturday at Tri-State Steuben County Municipal Airport.
And the skies will be lighting up big time with a special laser light show coming to Angola Balloons Aloft (see related story). It’s another big year for Angola Balloons Aloft.
Making an appearance from Belgium will be “Star Wars” special shapes balloons Darth Vader and Master Yoda.
The special balloons will be arriving later this week after appearances out West.
“We are really ecstatic that we have been able to get on their limited schedule,” said Marsha Drewes, who along with husband Walt Drewes direct Angola Balloons Aloft, which draws tens of thousands of people annually.
Darth Vader and Master Yoda only appear at a limited amount of hot air balloon shows and competitions in the United States each year, and Angola was fortunate to get on the schedule, Marsha said. So far, Darth Vader and Master Yoda are scheduled to appear in five
U.S. cities this year.In addition to Darth Vader and Yoda,
there will be 42 other balloons on hand for the growing event. This will include balloons that will be in competition and special shapes balloons that are for crowd amazement and amusement.
The number of balloons is about double the amount on hand when Angola Balloons Aloft first started in 2010.
“Each year we say we aren’t getting any bigger but the temptation is always there,” Marsha said.
Darth Vader was manufactured and first flew in 2007 after its owners
received permission from Lucasfilms to use the likeness. Master Yoda first flew in 2014 at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, which draws some 500 balloons annually.
In addition to being crowd pleasers, the inclusion of Darth and Yoda are expected to bring in legions of Star Wars fans to Angola Balloons Aloft, Drewes said.
“Angola Balloons Aloft touches the lives of many people and we just want to continue that trend. The committee is so proud of our accomplishments and what the event does for the community, so onward and upward,” Drewes said.
We are always updating our calendarof events, so be sure to check our
listings frequently!

ANGOLA — A laser light show by one of show business’ best known companies will light the sky Friday and Saturday nights at Angola Balloons Aloft.
A custom light show for Angola Balloons Aloft is being produced by Lightwave International, a laser show producer that works with the entertain-ment industry.
“Every show we do is unique and one of a kind — and we tailor each show specifically to the artists and audience. Whether it be a concert, festival or civic event, our team always tries to leave a lasting impression on the event and everyone in attendance which will keep them talking and excited for years to come,” said Lightwave’s Brian Bourgeois. “We’re happy to partner with Angola Balloons Aloft this year to introduce something new to their amazing event, and we can’t wait to help illuminate the night sky with these beautiful balloons from around the world and our own added touch of light!”
The laser light show will be staged following the illumination events on Friday and Saturday nights of Angola Balloons Aloft. The illumination starts just before dusk during the event.
“We’ve completed the contract with Lightwave International, who will be performing our Laser Light Show on both Friday and Saturday nights,” said Marsha Drewes, who along with her husband, Walt, organize Angola Ballons Aloft.
The laser show will be a custom
production created specifically for Angola Balloons Aloft. It will be the first of its kind of the company, which is known for first when it comes to laser light shows.
“Lightwave is internationally renowned for creation of the world’s largest full-color entertainment lasers, creation of the Pink Floyd laser prism, world-firsts and records in audience scanning, solid state laser systems and creative mashups of art and technology,” the company’s website says.
Lightwave has accompanied many artists on multi-year world tours including acts such as: Madonna, Rihanna, Roger Waters / Pink Floyd, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Katy Perry, The Killers, Ke$ha, Skrillex, Tom Petty, Korn, Jane’s Addiction and Shakira, to name a few. Lightwave’s work can be seen in recent movies such as Transformers 3, Oblivion, Captain America: Winter Soldier, and Cowboys & Aliens, as well as in hundreds of music videos, commercials and live television events.
“Here at Lightwave International, we pride ourselves on being a full production laser company and manufacturer. We’ve pioneered the technology and pushed the limits of what is possible in live laser show design over the years,” Bourgeois said.
“Since 1985 Lightwave has performed tens of thousands of events for millions of audience members worldwide, reaching hundreds of countries on every continent except Antarctica,” the company says.
Custom light show will join Balloons Aloft

ANGOLA — Organizers of Angola Balloons Aloft are reaching out to the public to become a part of the event beyond being spectators at the host site, Tri-State Steuben County Municipal Airport.
People can welcome balloonists to their properties — typically acreages and farms — and there are some safety pointers for the public to follow.
“If a balloon lands on a property with permission, the pilots always enjoy having the host property owner engage! It’s part of the enjoyment for the pilots and crew to meet rural folks and entertain them with their sport,” said Marsha Drewes, who along with her husband, Walt, chair the committee that organizes Balloons Aloft.
If you live within an 8-mile radius of the Tri-State Steuben County Municipal Airport and would like to become part of the Angola Balloons Aloft event, all you need is a white sheet.
“If you would not mind having a balloon landing or launching from your property, all you have to do is place a white sheet in a visible place in your yard,” Marsha Drewes said.
Affix the sheet to the ground and a
balloonist might just land in your yard on Friday or Saturday. Or they might use your property to launch from.
Balloons Aloft organizers ask partic-ipants to place a white sheet on the spot starting Friday early morning until Sunday morning.
Make sure the sheet can be seen from the air so when a balloon pilot sees it, he or she knows you have given him or her permission to land.
Drewes pointed out that because of the variability of winds and other factors, putting a sheet in your yard does not guarantee a balloonist will land there.
In addition, people who might want to follow a balloon over the countryside are being asked to exercise caution and respect people’s property.
“Actually the biggest effort on the part of the public is to make sure they don’t follow too closely to the chase vehicles and not cause a traffic jam,” Drewes said. “If you are watching or following balloons, make sure you keep your eyes on the highway!”
If people do follow balloons and decided to stop along a road or at a property, they should make sure they are parking in a place where parking is allowed, such as a highway shoulder.
People can participate, engage pilots
People who want to welcome pilots to their properties during Angola Balloons Aloft are asked to affix a white sheet to the ground designating a landing spot. Balloons Aloft runs Friday and Saturday and is headquartered at the Tri-State Steuben County Municipal Airport.

BY TRACE CHRISTENSONBATTLE CREEK, Mich. — Looking
at rain through a motel window at 4 a.m. is sometimes the job of a hot air balloon crew chief.
Just not the best part. For 25 years I have
chased the weather and when it’s good chased the balloon.
Every pilot on the launch field has a crew chief who is like a caddy for a professional golfer. We help carry his stuff and then stand back and hope he wins.
Like the pilots we get up early and stay up late. We lift and carry and pull, putting together an aircraft that some people can’t believe should fly. We sometimes drive hundreds of miles to spend the weekend grounded by conditions that are perfect for most sports. We start the day with wet feet from the dew and finish it drenched in sweat from the heat. I have listened to my pilot vow to quit the sport one minute and joined the applause when he accepts a first place trophy.
And when the balloons fly, like the spectators along the fence line, to us it’s always an amazing site.
I saw my first hot air balloon competi-
tion at the world championships in 1985 in Battle Creek, Michigan. I stood on the launch field as a newspaper reporter and all around me 200 balloons inflated and climbed into the sky in a mass launch.
In the years since, the thrill never leaves even when my pilot, Jim Birk, launches alone from a scrub field in search of a big white X a couple of miles away.
I was invited to crew for Birk a few years after I started covering the events in Battle Creek and now he and I are traveling each year to a dozen events in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi.
In competition, my work is to help make the flights easier. I ensure the radios are charged, that he has the markers and task sheets that are distrib-uted at briefing, help with directions to a good launch site and even keep ice in the cooler filled with water and an occasional adult beverage we might enjoy at the end of the day. I put small dots on big maps
where targets are located and make sure his name and competition number are written on the tails of those markers he will throw at the center of the target if the winds cooperate.
As part of the traveling circus we spend hours on the road traveling to events and then time in each city visiting attractions and restaurants or watching old movies in the motel room waiting for the next flight.
But when its time to fly I sometimes knock on the door of a home at 6 a.m. on Sunday morning, waking the resident because they have a nice yard in a location that is the right direction for our flight.
Then the two of us pull the balloon out of the van, put it together and inflate, and he is in the air in 5 minutes because as we know, the winds are always changing.
I slap the basket with my hand as it lifts and then start through streets clogged with cars driven by people
looking up and smiling. While eating Twizzlers, the official
candy of hot air ballooning, I sometimes run to the edge of the target field and to relay over the radio what the surface winds are doing and maybe help a bit so he can make adjustments and show the crowd how balloon pilots can fly to a spot on the ground and score big points.
On a good day I am parked and ready for him to land and when it’s not so good I can spend 30 minutes trying to find access to a field where I think he landed after he disappeared over a hill.
But when the balloon is on the ground and children and moms and dads come out and willingly agree to help stuff a heavy envelope back into the bag, it’s constant confirmation that the sport we enjoy is magic.
— Trace Christenson is from Battle Creek, Michigan, and is a reporter for the Battle Creek Enquirer. He is crew chief for pilot Jim Birk of McAllen, Texas.

ANGOLA — Once again, paid balloon rides available at the 6th Annual Angola Balloons Aloft.
Well before the July 10-11 event at Tri-State Steuben County Municipal Airport, organizers started taking reservations for the rides, something that has been much requested in past years and was first started last year.
Also available will be rides on the Mitchell B-25, a twin-engine medium bomber from the World War II era, a biplane from the post World War I era and a Bell Helicopter from the Vietnam War era.
“(People) have asked about balloon rides for … years,” said Walt Drewes, who along with his wife, Marsha, chairs
Angola Balloons Aloft.Gentle Breeze Hot Air Balloons,
Lebanon, Ohio, will be available for booking rides on Friday and Saturday evenings and Saturday morning. The cost will be $225.
The rides will be given in a balloon called Tiny, which is not really tiny at all. The balloon is about double the size of other balloons and is capable of carrying 2 tons of cargo and passengers. The high-sided basket features handles for passengers and padding in the event of a bumpy landing.
“She’s the most safety redundant balloon built with three engines, triple … burners, capable of producing a whopping heat output of 45 million BTUs,” Gentle Breeze’s website said.
Gentle Breeze’s balloon Lady Blye will be used for providing tethered rides on Friday and Saturday from 7-8:30 p.m. at a cost of $10 per person.
Both are available on a first-come, first-served basis. However, people can make reservations to ride in Tiny. That may be done on the Balloons Aloft website, AngolaBalloonsAloft.com, or by calling Gentle Breezes direct at 513-932-9007.
The Mitchell B-25 will be arriving
in Angola in time for activities that start on Friday. It will be flying in from the Yankee Air Museum, Ypsilanti, Michigan.
The plane was manufactured by North American Aviation. It was used by many Allied air forces, in every theater of World War II, as well as many other air forces after the war ended. It was utilized in service across four decades. There are around 40 of the planes still flying today, worldwide.
The rides are $400 per person on a first-come, first-served basis. Rides on the B-25 can be booked in advance at yankeeairmuseum.org or by calling Balloons Aloft at 316-8577.
Also available for rides on both days will be a 1929 New Standard biplane fron Waldo Wright’s.
The biplane flights will be available for $60 per person. The plane will be available first-come, first-served on both days of Balloons Aloft.
New this year will be a Bell Helcopter giving rides on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. No reservations are being taken for this helicopter that was a staple in the television show M*A*S*H.

ANGOLA — Food of all sorts will be available during Angola Balloons Aloft, much of which will be supplied by area civic groups.
For those wanting to catch the early morning events on Saturday and want to grab a bite to eat, the Angola Rotary Club will be providing a pancake breakfast.
Pancakes and sausage will be served from 7-10 a.m. at the main hangar/terminal building, for a donation. The proceeds will be used to support various Rotary projects, such scholarships for
local students, funding for exchange students and youth programs, a holiday dinner for RISE clients, and Rotary International projects such as polio eradication and disaster relief.
The Angola Rotary club was formed in 1914 and officially chartered in 1919. During the early years, it helped to form a local Red Cross chapter and raised funds for the construction of the Riley Children’s hospital. Recently, it has supported the Steuben County Literacy Coalition, Big Brothers/ Big Sisters and provided books for elementary schools.
