GeneralThis document describes the installation of the stubbed MCAngled Connector Housing.
DescriptionThe MC is a modular housing designed to hold fiber opticconnectors. The housing is usually part of a system that is afiber optic cross-connection between outside cables andopto-electronic equipment in a central office, computerroom,or remote terminal equipment location.
The MC fits into 23-inch equipment racks.The unit protects its contents with a removable hinged
door. The door is secured with plastic squeeze latches. The stubbed MC is a connector housing with a specified
length of preconnectorized cable installed and strain-
relieved on the side of the unit. The installer only needs toprepare the housing for installation, mount it to the utilityrack, and route the cable stub.
Tools and EquipmentNo special tools are required to complete this installation.
PlanningBefore you begin your installation, make sure youunderstand how the unit is to be installed, where cable willenter the unit,where it will be placed on the utility rack,how jumpers will be routed, and other details of theinstallation plan.

Housing PreparationUnpack the stubbed MC as illustrated in Figure 3.
Opening the UnitThe MC door is secured with plastic squeeze latches (Figure 4).
Squeeze the latches and swing the door open,then slide itto the left to remove it from the unit. Save the door.
MountingThe MC may be mounted on a standard 23- inch equipment

• Open the carton, lift outthe stubbed unit andinstall it as explained ininstructions packagedwith it.
• Route the stubbed cableto its destination.

Latch Removal and Replacement
Open the latch bypressing in on bothsides.
Insert paper clip intothe end of the latchspring.
Pull the latch springout of the body.
Press on sides of latchbody and push it out.
To replace, pressassembled latch intohole.

rack. The MC is available with or without a cable stub.Stubbed units (OSP applications) are shipped with reardoors and are typically mounted to the rack from the rear(Figure 5). Non-stubbed MC (FOT applications) usuallyhave doors pre-installed to the rack. In this configurationthe mounting bracket is installed in the forward position andmounted from the front (Figure 5).
Attach the unit to the equipment rack with screwsprovided, two screws per side of each housing (Figure 5).Route the cable along the rack uprights and secure it to theuprights with cable ties (Figure 6).
Connector PanelsConnector adapters are installed inside the MC housings.

They are mounted on twelve angled connector panels. If theMC is a 72-fiber unit,each panel will accommodate sixadapters. If the MC is a 96-fiber unit,each panel willaccommodate eight adapters. In a 144-fiber unit,each panelwill accommodate 12 adapters.
The panels can be removed by pulling on the nylonfasteners at either end.
To replace the panels:• Pull both knobs out all the way.• Position the two nylon fasteners into the mounting holes.• Press the knobs to fasten.
Cable/Jumper RoutingRoute OSP/IFC cables down the outside rear of frame to theappropriate housing. Strain-relieve the cable and transitionconnectorized fibers through routing triangles intoconnector housing (Figure 7).
Route low fiber count cables to the side of the framewhere fibers will be connectorized. For example, a 12-fibercable that will be terminated on the left side of the housingshould be routed down the left side of the frame.
Seventy-two-fiber cables may be routed down either sideof the frame since they will populate an entire housing.

ends. Jumpers should be installed as specified on planningdiagrams. Route jumpers from electronics through therouting triangles. If jumpers are feeding the bottom fourhousings,route jumpers with cables and transition to therouting triangles to strain-relieve (Figure 8).
On the front of the frame, route patch cords vertically inframe using vertical routing guides. Patch cords forconnectors 1-36 should be routed into the left side of theMC while connectors 37-72 should be routed into the rightside of the MC (Figure 9).
Determine patch cord length using diagram in Figure 10.Store additional patch cord slack in interbay storage unit.
PrecautionsDANGER: Fiber ends and unmated connectors mayemit invisible laser or LED radiation. Avoid direct eyeexposure to the beam. Do not inspect with magnifyinginstruments. Protective dust caps should be kept onall unmated couplings and connectors.
NOTICE: Fiber optic cable is sensitive to excessivepulling, bending and crushing forces. Consult thecable specification sheet for the cable you areinstalling. DO NOT BEND CABLE MORE SHARPLYTHAN THE MINIMUM RECOMMENDED BENDRADIUS. DO NOT APPLY MORE PULLING FORCETO THE CABLE THAN SPECIFIED. DO NOT CRUSHTHE CABLE OR ALLOW IT TO KINK. Doing so maycause damage that can alter the transmission charac-teristics of the cable. The cable may have to bereplaced.
Strain-ReliefStubbed units are factory strain-relieved. Units without astub can use 3M’s Universal Cable Clamp (UCC),ADC’sstrain-relief, or Lucent’s 12A2 clamp to strain-relief thestub. Use the bracket in the kit for Lucent’s 12A2 clampstrain-relief.
DocumentationJumper routing information is recorded on the card locatedon the door of the MC unit (Figure 11). Once you haverecorded information on the card, attach the door to the unit.
Maintenance The MC unit requires very little maintenance to make surefibers and parts are in good condition.
External components may be cleaned occasionally with adamp,nonabrasive cloth. Internal components should bechecked periodically for the following:• Loose Parts: Check nuts,bolts,and screws for looseness
and tighten if required.• Moisture:Check the housing for accumulated moisture
and place moisture absorbent packets if indicated.• Fiber Bends:Check fiber optic cable to make sure bends
do not exceed the minimum bend radius. Check cable forunnecessary strain. Check cable entries and exits forcrimping or crushing.
• Documentation: Check unit record cards to make sure allare clear and accurate.
• Connector Care:Heed connector handling instructionsdescribed in Figure 12.

Connector Handling Precautions • Use a clean tissue soaked in isopropyl alcohol to
gently clean the connector. Clean all areas that willcontact the connector adapter.
Note: Carefully follow safety, health andenvironmental information on container label orMaterial Safety Data Sheet for isopropyl alcoholbeing used.
• The connector is a delicate device. Do not pressheavily on it as you clean. Doing so may scratch orcrack the surface, making it unusable.
• Carefully press the connector into the adapter andtighten. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. Doing so candamage the connector surface, making it unusable.
• Do not allow the connector body (ferrule) to turn asyou screw it into place. Doing so will allow surfacesto grind against each other. The resulting scratchescould render the connector unusable.
• The connector should fit into the receptacle easily. Ifit binds,back it out. Do not force.
