that did so much to popularize “cowboy matches.” it’s based on the 1969 movie of the same title. Costume is required, either Old West garb of early 20th Century or military uniforms. The rifle will be a period lever-action, pump or mil-itary-style bolt action, ideally a Springfield .30-06 as in the movie; a Winchester Model 97 pump for the shotgun . . . and, for the pistol, a 1911 .45 auto. The latter is the subject of this article. Cimarron’s Chip Klaiber told On Target, “The Cimarron Firearms 1911 is a reproduction of the original 1911 that was issued to our troops during WWI and was manufactured by Colt from 1911 to 1924.

There are many people who still appre-ciate owning and using a ‘period correct and historically accurate’ pistol. The Cimarron Firearms 1911 has passed the ATF Drop Test. We offer this pistol so that those who participate in the Wild Bunch Shooting Competitions have a gun that meets the requirements and rules of the competition. We have several customers who also purchase this 1911 pistol as a self-protection piece. Yes, it will safely shoot hollow point ammunition; however, everyone knows that the 1911 pistol has always operated best with round nose ball ammunition. The semi-wadcutter was and is designed for revolvers, not semi-automatic pis-tols.” Chip credits Mike Harvey as “the

brain behind all of Cimarron Firearms guns,” who came up with the Wild Bunch Combo idea.

First Glancethe pistol is made for cimarron by Armscor in the Philippines, as 1911 connoisseurs will recognize from the very slightly different configuration of its trig-ger guard. But the first thing you notice on the Wild Bunch gun is the finish. It’s a gorgeous, high polish blue, of a kind seldom seen in this pistol’s sub-$1,000 price range. The stocks are handsome walnut, checkered with the double dia-mond pattern historically identified with first generation 1911s. It’s a pistol you’ll be proud to show off to your friends.

Feature for feature, the Wild Bunch pistol is something of a cross-breed, mix-ing the original 1911 with the 1911A1 of the mid-1920s. The trigger is solid, to comply with Wild Bunch rules for pis-tols shot in the Traditional category. It is shorter than on the original 1911 but a tad longer than that of the A1 modifi-cation. The frame is true to the original and lacks the finger recesses at the rear of the trigger guard which distinguish post-1920 commercial models and the military 1911A1s. The tiny round rear notch and blade front sight are replaced with 1911A1 configuration sights: still small, but with a square notch in back and a bit more substance up front. The lanyard loop is present at the butt end

of the mainspring housing. The ham-mer spur is checkered, “old style.” The short-tang, first-issue 1911 grip safety, that bit the hands of so many doughboys in World War I that it led to a longer tang on the 1911A1, has thankfully been replaced by a long tang on the Wild Bunch gun also. The grip safety is narrow, not the currently popular bea-vertail, but in hundreds of full-power .45 rounds it never bit or even discomforted your correspondent here. SASS under-stands, and these little crossings of the time machine are within their rules.

I’m sure some folks will buy this gun just for its looks, but Mike Harvey designed it to shoot. The trigger pull on our sample was not bad at all.

Pull weight, as measured on a Lyman digital gauge, averaged 5.7 pounds. If I recall correctly, Army Ordnance’s 1911 spec for the original pistol was five to seven pounds for trigger pull, so the weight is historically correct.

The trigger was well adjusted on our test sample. In the hand, there was a slight take-up followed by a short, smooth roll before the hammer fell. All in all, a good “street trigger” for a single-action auto pistol.

In keeping with Wild Bunch Tra-ditional Division rules, the grip-frame itself is smooth: those rules don’t allow for checkered or otherwise modified front or back straps. It’s between your palm and the checkered walnut to pre-

vent slippage. I found that feature (the rear of the flat mainspring housing is flat and smooth in doughboy tradition also) encouraged the hard hold that is desirable when firing any .45.

shootinG the Wild Bunch .45

speaking of 1911 and traditions, one such was that the gun was de-signed for 230-grain hardball and needed tweaking for hollow point and semi-wadcutter loads. Our test sample lived up to that tradition.

At the beginning, the test gun expe-rienced 6 o’clock misfeeds, particularly on the first hand-chambered round of JHP. We started with Winchester white box 230-grain JHP, and the

incompatibility was strong. When Remington Express 185-grain JHP, which normally feeds in anything that feeds ball, was found to choke, it was time to diagnose and remedy.

Over the decades, we learned that if a gun wasn’t running with hollow points and we weren’t ready to have a pis-tolsmith throat the feedway and cham-ber, there were a few things to try. In no particular order: More lube. Wilson magazines. A break-in shooting period. Ball ammo. If running an 8-round mag, download to seven. We tried ‘em all, and finally solved the problem.

The pistol worked with round nose full metal jacket 230-grain .45 ACP from the beginning, with the

provided ACT magazine and the Wilsons. With Wilson 47D mags the pistol ran 100% with the Remington JHP, 200-grain lead semi-wadcutters from Black Hills, and even the wide-mouth Winchester JHPs. By the time we passed the often-recommended 200-round break-in point, everything was working with the Wilson mags and all but the Winchester JHP with the ACT mag. (I usually don’t see problems with the ACT product, and this particular magazine may simply have not played well with this particu-lar pistol. That sort of thing happens.) There is a reason that a 200-round break-in period became gospel among those of us who shot 1911s in “the

days of yesteryear” . . . and the Wild Bunch pistol is a yesteryear concept.

accuracywild bunch matches require all-lead bullets due to the steel targets, so it was fortuitous indeed that the Wild Bunch pistol shot its best with such a load. Black Hills’ lead semi-wadcutter bullet, weighing 200 grains in what looks like the Hensley & Gibbs #68 format, plunked five shots into 1.45 inches, fired hand-held from a Matrix rest on a concrete bench at 25 yards. With hand-held shooting, I’ve long found that measuring the best three shots eliminates enough human error to correlate very well with what the

same pistol and load will do from a Ransom machine rest with all five, and is a lot easier for readers to duplicate with their own guns for comparison purposes. The best 3-shot group with this LSWC round measured under an inch: 0.95” center to center.

Chip Klaiber mentioned that some traditionalists bought this gun for personal defense. For that, you want the jacketed hollow points forbidden in Wild Bunch competition. I shot the test Wild Bunch pistol off the bench with Remington Express (green and yellow box) 185-grain JHP, and it delivered a 4.20” 5-shot group, with the best three in 2.85”. That should certainly be accu-rate enough for home defense.

The pistol came out of the box with the rear sight off center to the right, which brought groups in the same direction. This sort of thing is an easy fix, simply drifting it to port in its dovetail, and not a big deal.

the rest oF the comBothe wild bunch combo comes with a beautifully made copy of the M7 “tanker” chest holster, like the one William Holden wore in his starring role as gang leader “Pike” in the “Wild Bunch” movie which is set in Pre-WWI Mexico. I found this strange since I’ve always associated the M7 rig with the WWII period. While the workman-ship was beautiful, the original design

was not. The security strap depresses the grip safety when fastened, and the fingers have to dig between the grip panel, plus the strap takes a distinct ex-tra movement to release. But tradition, beauty and great workmanship mean a lot to this gun’s target market.

MSRP is $995 for the gun and holster. What you’re getting is a not-quite-original 1911 that is abso-lutely beautiful to look at, can be made to do what it was designed to do, and comes with a strikingly handsome holster. If those are your needs, the price is right. And I can tell you, the gun was fun. See it at your nearest dealer, or con-tact Cimarron Firearms; Tel.: (830) 997-0802; Web: Cimarron-Firearms.Com

The trigger and hammer on all versions are finished in matte silver Cerakote, providing an attractive and contrasty appearance, especially on the silver and burnt bronze models.

round-top blade front and integral notch rear, which were surprisingly easy to acquire, align and shoot with on the black model provided for testing. The sights on the silver and burnet bronze models, being finished in those respective colors, may be less easy to see and use—something you should check out at you gun shop before purchase.

The Wrangler is fitted with the now-standard Bill Ruger Sr. designed transfer bar safety, so it’s perfectly safe to carry a loaded round under the hammer. Combined with the aforementioned loading gate inter-lock, the Wrangler is about the safest to carry and handle single-action revolver you’ll find.

review without finding something to complain about, and I guess I’m no exception. There were only a handful of little quirks with that Wrangler that jumped out at me. First on the list was the overly stiff hammer spring, which made cocking

the hammer more work than neces-sary. Thankfully, the hammer spur is big and deeply checkered which made the process less onerous. I also found the loading gate to be stiff and difficult to open, which may be due to an interlock device incorporated

into the design. Lastly, the trigger was OK but not great. Being a sin-gle-action revolver, I was expecting a crisp and relatively light trigger pull, but this one was on the heavy side—slightly over 5 pounds pull weight—and exhibited about 1/8 inch of take-up and a small amount of creep, the latter of which may decrease as the trigger wears in with use.

Accurate and soft-recoiling, on the range the Wrangler was an absolute joy to shoot—an experience made even more fun by the fact that the

factory sights were spot-on out of the box. Perfect point-of-aim/point-of-impact is a very good thing on any SAA-ish replica, because unless you want to break out a file and start do-ing some metalwork for elevation, or turning the barrel within the frame for windage, the sights are as fixed as fixed sights get.

This is the type of firearm that goes well with bulk, “value pack” types of ammo. Why? We’ve found that it’s a tough gun to put down after you start shooting. It’s also the

type of firearm that’s fantastic to teach new, young shooters. Instead of being tempted to do a mag dump with a semi-auto pistol (because as any parent has found, this is usually a youngster’s first instinct) they will be forced, more or less, to make each round count, making teaching the fundementals all that much easier for

the one giving instruction. From the bench, this single-ac-

tion .22 surprised us a bit. We did dial the testing distance back from 25 to 15 yards — mostly due to the rudimentary sights these types of handguns are equipped with — but even still, the Wrangler shot an impressive 1.35-inch five-shot group

using CCI’s poly-coated Clean-22 Target load. Keeping groups under the sub-two-inch mark with other loads we ran through the Wrangler was not challenging. And again, point-of-aim/point-of-impact were nearly perfect.

There’s a lot to like about the Ru-ger Wrangler, but in a nutshell; it’s

a fun gun for both new and old gen-erations of shooters, cheap to shoot, and — in typical Ruger fashion — it’s a quality firearm at a price within reach of most buyers. eotech’s hws (holographic Weapons Sight) continues to be the close quarter battle sight of choice for the United States Special Op-erations Command (USSOCOM); issued to its elite troops, and in-use by most—if not all—tip-of-the-spear, counter-terror units around the globe, and for all the right reasons. The rapid target acquisi-tion this sight brings to the mission continues to go unmatched. A very large field of view paired with EO-Tech’s lightning-fast, yet utilitarian

($555) and EXPS3 ($700) maintain their signature large, square field of view, and when coupled with the op-tional A65 circle dot reticle, the sight is a literal super car in the realm of close-quarter battle. The center dot is a precise 1-MOA in size and is designed as your 50/200-meter zero, while the 6 o’clock portion of the bottom rocker is your point of aim/point of impact at 7 to 10 yards. The 3 and 9 o’clock por-tions of the reticle can be used as holds on moving targets, and finally, the reti-cle can also be used for ranging targets.

The equation for the latter is a simple one; the height of an average adult male will fit within the 68-MOA circle at 100 yards and half the reticle at 200 yards. Most of our eye sight will be strained much beyond that, without a little help from a 3x magnifier and a very stable position.

Unlike tubular sights that can amplify “tunnel vision” under duress, the HWS’s wide rectangular win-dow heightens peripheral vision and encourages both-eyes-open shooting; increasing speed-to-target time and enhancing situational awareness thanks to its enlarged field of view.

A holographic weapon sight de-livers an instantaneous, razor-sharp view of both reticle and target. With HWS, the holographic reticle is perceived by the shooter to be as far away as the target, allowing for simultaneous focus on both the target and the reticle. That means not having to consciously shift focus during high-stress situations, thereby

acquisition within the cockpit. When using holography, all the information required to recon-struct the reticle image is record-ed everywhere in the heads-up display window. It creates an accurate image of a target even in poor-visibility conditions like rain, snow, darkness or cloud cover. The heads-up display of a holographic sight provides the user with 2-eyes-open shooting that eliminates blind spots, tunnel vision, and maximizes peripheral vision.

Just like a high-performance automobile, a little more preven-tative maintenance is required. In EOTech’s case, this maintenance

comes in the form of battery life. The EXPS and XPS units are powered by a single CR123A lithium battery and have a battery life of 600 hours. Both XPS2 and EXPS3 models feature a battery life indicator that allows the reti-cle to pulse when initially pow-ered on if the battery has minimal life left, although this pulsing only occurs when the sight is powered on from an off state.

Rubberized push-button controls are located on the left side of the EXPS3 model and on the rear of XPS2 model. These buttons allow the user to pre-ad-just settings for known lighting conditions, or expected use with a weapon mounted light. When you first power up the sight it will turn on at level 12 of 20 daytime settings. To change the reticle intensity, simply press the 1.

up or down arrows, or press the NV button on the EXPS 3 model to activate the night vision set-ting for use in conjunction with in-line or head-mounted night vision devices.

The EXPS3 features an integrat-ed throw-lever mount/riser and positions the reticle at the lower 1/3 co-witness height, or about 1.73-inches above the top rail, for more of a heads-up shooting position. One of the secrets to the EXPS3’s combat-proven durability is an integrated roll bar that pro-tects the lens and acts as a built-in crush zone. If the sight were to take a tooth jarring impact, only the roll bar is likely to sustain superficial damage.

nighthawkDrop-in 1911 Triggera common improvement sought by in a 1911 pistol is a high-quality, gunsmith trigger job, with a crisp, clean break. Exit gunsmith. With Nighthawk Custom’s new Drop-In Trigger System (DTS) for 1911s you can do it yourself. An all-in-one unit, it replaces your existing hammer, hammer strut, sear, disconnector, and sear spring. Your existing sear pin and hammer pin will be retained. It features a steel housing and fully machined, stainless steel internal components. The traditional three-pronged sear spring is gone as the springs for the disconnector and sear are built into the unit. A single-leg grip safety spring replaces the existing sear spring. Yankee Hill machine resonator K if you value your hearing, suppressing your rifle makes a lot of sense. if that’s the case a quick-connect suppressor, such as YHM’s Resonator K offers a lot of sound-suppression for the money.

What we love about the Resonator K ($589) is that the blast chamber is threaded for the popu-lar 1-3/8”-24 thread, making it compatible with many of today’s mounting options. The updated endcap design greatly reduces flash and the suppressor can be used on rifle calibers ranging from .17HMR all the way up to 300 RUM.

Not only is the Resonator lightweight, quiet and affordable, it utilizes a tubeless design housing 17-4 stainless steel baffles and a 718 Inconel blast baffle, both of which have been heat treated, increasing longevity and shrugging off years of rigorous, full-auto abuse. sureFire m600DF scout Lightmany years ago, surefire earned our trust as the top manufacturer of forward thinking, robust, weather-proof light systems specifically designed to withstand the con-stant punishment of being mounted to a firearm, and they continue to lead the pack in our opinion.

SureFire recently released new PRO versions of its proven Scout Light line; our favorite is the M600DF PRO ($299) boasting 1,500 lumens of ultra-white light. The DF stands for Dual Fuel, allowing the light to run on a pair of CR123A lithium batteries, or an 18650 recharge-able battery, which comes with a truck charger.

What sets the new PRO apart from its predeces-sors is the way it mounts to your rifle. The PRO fea-tures a new Low-Profile Mount (LPM) that allows the light body to rotate and roll inboard or outboard, fitting snuggly beneath other accessories, significantly reducing the profile of the light. Mounts are compatible with M-Lok and Picatinny rail sections. While Scout Lights are most commonly mounted on AR-15/M4 style pistols and rifles, the LPM opens the doors to effectively mount a white light onto other platforms such as lever guns, bolt guns and bull pups, with the most contour hugging, signature reducing profile possible. with a 6-round cylinder and a 16.125” barrel. It features a walnut buttstock with straight checkered neck, adjustable Buck-

Since there is neither a buttstock pistol grip nor any forearm, a fixed (as in inoperable) “second trigger” is machined into the underside of the trigger guard just aft of the real one to provide extra grip purchase. The Rough Rider is a single-action-only rifle, mean-ing that the hammer must be manually cocked to fire. It has both a mechanical thumb safety and a hammer safety to permit carrying a live round under the hammer. All metal except the natural-finish hammer is finished in black oxide. 27 nosler Cartridgethe .270 win. has taken millions of medium and large game animals since its introduction in 1925, but the new 27 Nosler beats it hands down. Based on the 404 Jeffrey case, the 27 Nosler has a long leade for sleek, high ballistic coefficient, long ogive, ABLR and RDF style bullets. Loaded with a 150-gr. bullet, the 27 Nos-ler is a whooping 400 f.p.s. faster than the .270 Win., and 300 f.p.s. faster than the 270 WSM at the muzzle, which translates into an extra 800 ft. lbs. and 600 ft. lbs. extra muzzle energy respectively. At 500 yards, the 27 Nosler drops 11” less than the .270 Win. and 7” less than the 270 WSM. Nosler offers both loaded ammunition and bullets, and Nosler’s published load data shows attainable muzzle velocities over 3,400 f.p.s. with their 150 gr. AccuBond bullet. a marque that is to 1911s as Patek Phil-lipe or Movado are to wristwatches.

Founder Bill Wilson earned his fame by not only modifying 1911s into more capable pistols as a gunsmith, but winning top level championships firing them himself. His progression to manufacturer was an outgrowth of that. Wilson Combat offers a broad array of 1911s, built to serve different needs in different hands.

A few years ago, the company introduced its X-Tac line, designed to combine concealed carry size with high performance. In late 2019, Bill

announced his latest evolution of the X-Tac series, and his 1911 line in general,

the Experior. On Target traveled to Wilson’s hunting ranch and shooting range in Texas to test the Experior prior to its introduction.

evolution, not revolutionthe new experior does not replace the X-Tac line, it extends it. Says Bill Wilson simply, “We don’t discontin-ue, we add.”

One of the most visible differences is grip frame treatment. The original X-Tac was designed for a secure grip; the Experior carries that motif farther. “It gets awfully hot and sweaty here in Texas in the summer when we’re shooting the heck out of pistols. I wanted something that would give the hand traction no matter how wet

and slippery it became,” Bill explained. Accordingly, the X-Tac signature cross-hatched grip grooves are even deeper and more distinct in the Experi-

or treatment. Wilson Combat calls it their “TRAK grip texture.”

To appreciate the Experior, we have to look to its roots and familiarize ourselves with its Wil-son Combat ancestor, the X-Tac. Starting at $2,760 MSRP, the X-Tac has deep cuts in a diamond pattern to allow the palmar surfaces of the shooter’s firing hand—and even support hand—to take a solid hold. Starburst grip panels likewise have a scientific, ergonomic surface for more secure grasp. A somewhat different but still distinctive pattern

is found on the slide grasping grooves. Wilson’s famous Bullet-proof parts ensure longevity, and their outstanding Battlesights come standard. 2018 saw an upgrade, the X-Tac Elite, offered in both 9mm and .45 ACP.

When Bill and his team issued us the new Experior’s on the firing line, I was mildly surprised to see that they were 9mm instead of the 1911’s original .45 ACP chamber-ing. I shouldn’t have been surprised. Bill told On Target, “Across our whole 1911 line, 9mm now ac-

counts for 55% of our production. .45 ACP is more like 45%, with about one percent in other calibers such as .38 Super. If you include our proprietary XD9, that comes up to 70% 9mm. If you include our Wilson Combat Beretta 92s, that brings 9mm dominance here up to about 75/25.”

The Experior has scalloped cutouts in its frame rails. This is to allow dirt clearance. Each scallop be-comes sort of a reservoir of lubrica-tion, so when contact surfaces have rubbed some oil away, some remains to keep the parts smoothly gliding along one another. “WAVE” is Wil-son Combat’s term for this slide rail configuration.

Those of us who’ve been in the 1911 game a long time know how long it took to get 9mm 1911s to work reliably. The pistol’s heavy slide needs momentum to cycle it, and the 9mm cartridge is shorter in overall length than the .45 ACP cartridge around which John M. Browning designed the 1911 to begin with. Bill Wilson and his team have, with the Experior, come up with anoth-er little subtlety to enhance 9mm

function in this platform. Bill told us, “The Experior’s front locking lug doesn’t drag. We took about ten one-thousandths of an inch off, to allow it to unlock easier with 9mm recoil levels.” The front of the slide has been narrowed to cut slide weight and better serve reliability with light 9mm loads, as well.

Want more than single-stack capacity in your 1911? In one subset of Experior models, Wilson Combat has cross-bred their hugely popular EDC X9 format into this series. Magazines of 15- and 18-round capacity (9mm) are available. Those

who love everything about 1911s but its grip safety will be happy to

3.5 to 4.5 pounds pull weight. Wilson’s guns are famous for their uniformly excellent trigger pulls, and these were no surprise. Uniformly, there was a tiny bit of “good creep” before a very clean, crisp roll-off of the shot. A bit of a jargon alert is called for here. “Bad creep” in a trigger is a series of little catches that stall the trigger movement briefly before the shot releases. “Good creep” is a light, predictable take-up that doesn’t interfere with a smoothly controlled trigger press, but still tells the shooter “Hey brain, finger here: we’re moving the trigger so be really sure you want this gun to go off.” Every one of the several Experiors we shot during the test exhibited that desirable feature.

Accuracy? I didn’t have a chance to bench rest an Experi-or, but watching good shooters on the firing line and doing a good bit of shooting with them myself, it looks as if they’ll all confirm Wilson’s guarantee of 1.5” precision at 25 yards with the best ammunition.

On every gun, the slide ran along its rails as smoothly as if it was on oiled ball bearings. As noted earlier, the TRAK concept worked; my hand nev-er felt chafed or abused by the high traction grip surface, and none of the Experior pistols ever moved detectably within my grasp. On every example, the thumb safeties were per-fectly adjusted: on or off safe, the resistance was just right, like Momma Bear’s porridge: not too stiff, not too easy. That says something good about consistency of manufac-ture and quality control.

Bottom linethe experior pistols’ msrps start at a hair under three thousand dol-lars. That’s a price tag that makes a lot of people wince. How does high price factor into value?

What you’re paying for is pride of ownership, of course. That in turn draws from obvious build quality, and a well-earned reputation for per-formance, longevity, and reliability.

There’s also that very subjective element of Wilson Combat “shoota-bility.” Let me give you an example

1—TesTers Were uniforMly pleased WiTh The perforMance of The experior pisTols, shooTing for accuracy “on The clock.” as evidenced By The TWo shells JusT having cleared The eJecTion porT froM a quick dou-Ble-Tap, The full-size 9MM experior douBle sTack is a very con-TrollaBle pisTol When run hard and fasT. of that. A few days after the Experior test shoot, Wilson Combat Ranch hosted a “gun geezer gathering” of shooters who’ve been involved in “combat competition” since the mid 1980s. It included some old-style IPSC shooting courses done in fixed-time format as in the days before electronic gunshot timers. Not having gotten the word that we were supposed to bring 1911s (my fault, not Bill Wilson’s), I borrowed one of Bill’s: a compact X-Tac 9mm, the forerunner of the Experior. When

the proverbial smoke had cleared, I had come in one point behind many-time World Champion Rob Leatham. Rob scored 714 out of 715 possible points, and the borrowed X-Tac gave me 713.

A pistol that lets an old fart like me come that close to a world champi-on’s score is a pistol that’s worth the Wilson Combat asking price…and the Experior is the improved version of that pistol! For more information contact Wilson Combat; Tel.: (870) 545-3618; Web: wilsoncombat.com
