Welcome

T here are many different ways in which guests

are made welcome in someone’s home—in the

case of Angel Fire, “welcome” is encompassed in

a dynamic interplay of elements. Pyrotechnic sunsets

f ire-branding the mountain peaks red and gold;

sprawling wilderness that beckons contemplation and

exploration; the natural high born of breathing fresh

mountain air. It is also easy to feel good in a com-

munity that is rich in laid-back charm and easygoing

folks. A visit to Angel Fire is not simply about “getting

away,” but also about getting back to yourself. Renewal

and revitalization; R & R with a high-altitude twist.

As a premiere family destination, Angel Fire’s “youth

movement” runs through all four seasons, with

numerous opportunities for the young, and the young

at heart, to stay actively engaged. You can say that

our town’s resounding “welcome,” translates into an

invitation for all f ive of your senses to experience

nature, southwestern-style. Indulge freely.

W hen winter arrives in Angel Fire, the

landscape is transformed into a massive

playground for kids of all ages. With over

210 inches of annual snowfall—not to mention ex-

tensive snowmaking—there are many ways in which

to experience the upside and the down-slide of

mountain fun. There are 76 ski trails—covering all

different skill levels—30 acres of gladed tree skiing, snowshoeing,

snowskating, snowbiking, snowmobiling, sleigh rides, and horseback

riding. Riders can get aerodynamically creative in the two award-winning

freestyle terrain parks. Around Angel Fire, you can trek into national

forests or high mountain meadows on backcountry skis, snowshoes or

snowmobiles. If you’re heading into unfamiliar terrain, get a guide.

Tubing enthusiasts, take note: Angel Fire is home to

the Polar Coaster, the biggest tubing park in the South-

ern Rockies. Cast your line in an alternative direction

and try ice f ishing in nearby Eagle Nest Lake. When it’s

time to come in from the cold, frothy hot chocolate or

a honey-infused hot toddy, enjoyed by the f ireside, will

warm the bones. Until you’re ready to resume playing

in the snow.

W hen the mountains trade in their winter-coats and “go

green” for the warmer seasons, another side of Angel Fire

springs to life. A time when wildf lowers become all the rage

and then later, aspens blaze orange and yellow. Natural splendors and

sensual delights serve as the perfect backdrop for a slew of recreational

options. A golfer’s paradise exists in Angel Fire’s 18-hole PGA Cham-

pionship Course. If you’re in the market for the “wheel deal,” world-

class mountain biking trails will get you rolling. Want to put a little zip

and crackle into your vacation? Angel Fire’s new Zipline Adventure

Tour allows “gliders” to get their express on, and

travel from tree to tree in heart-pumping fashion.

How else to enjoy our jewel-of-a-community? Let

us count the ways: f ishing, hunting, bird-watching,

rafting, tennis, picnicking, off-roading, ATV tours,

horseback riding, scenic chairlift rides, and photo-

the cool mountain air, is ideal climate for hiking, and

there’s an abundance of trails—both in town and nearby

rugged beauty of the high country.

C ome spring, you’ll be f ired up to explore nature’s many trails.

Whether a light stroll or demanding workout, there are plenty of

places to go. At our high altitude, your heart will pump a little

harder especially if you bust a herd of elk in the woods. Wildf lowers peak

in July. Fall colors hit their high notes in late September. So, load up

on water and sunscreen and plan for sudden weather changes. Wherever

your GPS steers you, leave only footprints behind.

A fter learning of their son David’s death in Vietnam, the Dr. Victor

Westphall family founded the Vietnam Veterans Peace and

Brotherhood Chapel on a hill looking south to Angel Fire. It

became the nation’s f irst Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Today, a state park

with free admission, it has a national reputation as an invaluable site for

veterans of all wars and their families. Since 1968, well over two million

visitors have come. While the chapel, always open to the public, nurtures

the emotional and spiritual setting of the place, the Visitor Center feeds

the imagination of what it was like to serve in Vietnam. Photographs,

banners, video, soldier artifacts f ill the 6000 square foot center. Outside

is a Huey helicopter. Guided tours available. Visitor Center open 9-5 daily.

Getting HereFrom Albuquerque or from the north, drive to Taos and turn east at the

Taos Visitor Center onto Bypass 585. Follow the signs through scenic

Taos Canyon, over Palo Flechado Pass, and down into the spectacular

Moreno Valley.

AirportAngel Fire Airport, operated by Colfax County, is located one mile

north of town. The 8900’ runway has pilot radio-activated runway lights.

Elevation is 8382’ with prevailing westerly winds. Fuel: 100LL and Jet

A. Long-range plans include more hangars, fuel farm and runway work.

575-377-0526

High-AltitudeDrink water, and lots of it. Use sunscreen, as there is 30% less protection

from the sun’s rays at 8,000+ feet. Be conscientious about your alcohol

intake, especially when f irst arriving. Understand that higher altitude

impacts heart rate and respiratory functions. Listen to your body and go

at your own pace.

Community FoundationOriginating in 1978, the Angel Fire Community Foundation has a goal

of improving quality of life for residents and visitors. The Founda-

tion helps connect donor charitable giving goals with vital community

needs. Over $500,000 has been allocated to health and human services,

arts and culture, education and literacy and youth and family services.

A ngel Fire is an ideal place to live and raise a

family. It’s not just beautiful here, we have

crystal clear air year around. After work,

you can get out and enjoy the climate and clear your

mind. We have four distinct, spectacular seasons, and

it’s nearly always sunny; we’re at the same latitude as

Mykonos, Greece. You can zip from home to work in

just a few minutes with no stop lights. In Angel Fire, the only traff ic jam

happens when everyone stops for a herd of elk crossing the road.

LifestyleThe lifestyle here is lively! Hiking, biking, f ishing, skiing and snow-

boarding, 4-wheeling, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and much more.

Besides our famous elk, deer, bobcats, turkey and yes, the occasional

children a top-notch education. Our elementary and

middle school is acknowledged as one of New

Mexico’s most innovative, and Moreno Valley High

School is one of the nation’s top-ranked charter

high schools. Students love the four day week.

Melting PotIn the American way, Angel Fire is a melting pot. Some of our families

have been here for generations, but many residents have deliberately

moved here from other parts of the country, even other nations, because

it’s such a great place to live. They’ve brought their business acumen,

their artistic skills, and a wealth of knowledge, experience and creativity.

Staying GreenReduce, reuse, recycle. Angel Fire is doing its part as guardian of the

planet with an active recycling program: cardboard, aluminum, plastic,

scrap metal, batteries, paper, glass and magazines. Recycling trailers are

located around town. 575-377-6967
