Versions of Android

© JB Burke 2016

When do/will you get a new

version? Depends on the manufacturer/brand of your

device

 Nexus is generally first

 Google owns Nexus brand

Google Play versions get updates quickly

They have unmodified versions of Android

 Other manufacturers make changes

(“improvements”) to Android

Takes them a while to modify new versions

© JB Burke 2016

When will I get a new

version?

 Marshmallow:

update-679175/

 Nougat:

A bit about Google

If you have a Gmail account (email with [email protected]) you will have useful capabilities. You can synchronize:

 Contacts (Address list)

Your Calendar Across all your devices: SmartPhone

 Android Tablet

 Laptop

 Desktop

This is very convenient to keep track of life in general

Do you need Google account for Android?

You're not required to have a Google

account associated with an Android device,

though most people probably do. You do

need one if you download apps through the

Market, but you can also side-load apps, use

other markets like the Amazon App Store, etc.

© JB Burke 2016

Also email …

Google email is built-in to Android devicess You must setup your account of course

You can also add your other email account(s) You’ll need basic account setup info for this

Mail can be viewed and answered from multiple devices: SmartPhone

 Tablet

 Laptop

 Desktop

I set mine up so my Q.com (CenturyLink) email will only be deleted from the server when I download it to my desktop computer – so I can save what I want to keep in local mail folders.

Some Android stuff to know …

There are multiple Android Device hardware manufacturers Unlike the iPad – Apple only

The manufacturers integrate the free Android OS with their hardware

This makes them cheaper than iPhone/iPad

They generally run all the Android Apps

The interface (what the screen looks like out of the box) varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.

 Each has a unique: Launcher

Home screen interface Let’s look at mine (G4 Marshmallow 6.0)

© JB Burke 2016

System Updates

Occasionally the Android OS needs to update itself Just like Windows updates

You should do this when it’s offered

It will get to you in any case – it is PUSHED to you

Can be a longish download – just let it run Don’t let it run out of battery – plug it in!

Puts an Android icon on the screen as it runs

Will add useful features, such as bug fixes, performance improvements and security updates

Recently I had an update to mine (Marshmallow) My LG G4 was relatively new at the time

© JB Burke 2016

Recent Android Version …

 Android 6 - Marshmallow https://www.android.com/versions/marshmallow-6-0/

Now on Tap Google Now is an intelligent personal assistant developed

by Google

Better battery management Doze – sleep state when your device is at rest

App Standby – charge lasts longer

 Control over permissions

 Fingerprint login for greater Security

And a whole lot more …

Depending on your device … You may get it sooner or later …

 Contact the manufacturer for details

© JB Burke 2016

More darn details

Microsoft, Apple & Google are both manufacturers and developers

Microsoft charges 3rd parties a fee for Windows)

Google doesn’t charge for Android license

Apple doesn’t license iOS at all

LG, ASUS, Amazon and Samsung are Android manufacturers

Google provides Android OS; mfrs. tailor it to their specs

Most mfrs. add software to their Android devices to differentiate themselves from others

 (They want to “add value”)

Whereas all iPads look alike (within models)

© JB Burke 2016

Other devices that are out there

 There are Convertible Tablets

 Some run Windows 8.1/10

 With or without keyboard

 Some now very inexpensive

 E-readers

Such as the original Kindle & Nook

 For reading books only

Not really a tablet – but a great reader

 Can’t run apps

 Is this what you want/need?

 Holds 1000+ books

Components of an Android Device

An ARM CPU Single core (like one chip)

 Dual/Quad/Octa-core CPUs

Higher end devices get more complex and faster CPU’s

1 to 4GB (gigabytes) (typically) of RAM Random Access Memory (where you run apps)

 The more the better

Storage (sometimes called “memory” Like a hard drive for your device

 8GB or 16GB typical, 128GB on some
