Introduction

• Android is a platform and operating system for mobile devices based on the Linux operating system and developed Google Inc. and Open Handset Alliance (O.H.A).

• Android 3.0 is a new version of the Android platform.

• It also known as Honey Comb.

Need for Mobile O.S.

To break a barrier that stands between a mobile and a computer, Mobile Operating Systems are developed.

What is an Mobile O.S?A mobile O.S is an operating system that controls mobile devices or any other handheld devices.

Typical types of handheld devices that works on mobile o.s. are smart phones, PDA’s, tablet pc’s and other information appliances.

Varieties of Mobile O.S.

• Symbian series

• Apple’s MAC O.S.

• Window mobile

• Android.

• Palm, Linux, RIM/Blackberry

Why Android?• Android O.S. is based on Linux kernel.

• Android is an O.S. which overcomes with the drawbacks of all other mobile o.s. and is packed with excellent new features.

• It is an efficient.

• It has an advanced UI which makes the device touch friendly technology as in Sci-Fi films.

Versions of Android• Android 1.0 developed on 23rd sep 2008 was the first Android.

•Android 1.1 an update of version1.0 was released for T-Mobile G1 on 9 Feb 2009.

• With several new features and UI updates Android 1.5 (Cupcake) was released on 30 April 2009 based on Linux kernel 2.6.27.

• After a few months gap 1.6 (Donut) was introduced which was based on Linux kernel 2.6.29

• Within a short interval of time both 2.0 and 2.1 (Éclair) was released with new features and based on same kernel.

• On 20 May 2010, version 2.2 (Froyo) based on Linux kernel 2.6.32 was released with some more new features.

• On 6th Dec 2010, Android version 2.3 (Gingerbread) was introduced which was based on Linux kernel 2.6.35

• Finally on 26 Jan 2011, Android’s latest version 3.0 called Honey Comb was introduced with its best features provided till now.

• Android 3.0 is the latest version of Android platform.

• Android 3.0 is specifically optimized for larger screens such as Tablet PC’s.

• It introduces a brand new, truly virtual and “holographic” UI design, as well as an elegant, content-focused interaction model.

The Android O.S. system architecture is divided into five different layers such as:1). Linux Kernel2). Libraries3). Android RunTime4). Application FrameWork5). Applications

Application Lifecycle• In Android, every application runs in its own process, which gives better performance in security, protected memory.

The application life cycle of a process is shown in figs. shown below

Applications & Uses• Android 3.0 is made with a purpose of supporting large screen hand-held devices.

• Motorola XOOM is the first Android 3.0: Honey Comb controlled tablet pc

• Motorola Xoom has a Dual Core processor and a 10.1” HD display.

• Android is taking a step further in the field of creating O.S’s.

• Android will soon come up with its latest Android named as Ice-cream Sandwich.

•Ice cream Sandwich will be launched soon within mid of 2011
